(00:01):
welcome to the Around the District
podcast i'm Gabrielle Mazar i'm Nicole
Brown and today we're going to discuss
that we didn't vote for this and we
obviously know we didn't vote for this
but we're hearing a lot about
Republicans not voting for this
independents who voted for you know who
that didn't vote for this um and we want

(00:22):
to say like what what obviously didn't
you vote for like you clearly freaking
voted for this right like what didn't
you vote for you knew what you were
getting into you know what I hear is
they're not They're saying they didn't
vote vote for the tariffs what let's
Let's just stop there we knew you No
yeah hard stop you knew that he was

(00:43):
going to impose these tariffs so how can
you say that you didn't vote for that
like what what what were you expecting
um I think they were expecting the other
countries to pay the tariffs i don't
think they understood what tariffs
actually meant even though I don't know
how many times it would people tried to
explain it to the MAGA voters but they

(01:05):
didn't listen they didn't understand
they don't know what tariffs are or what
they do they don't understand that
tariffs are attacks so China just China
just raised the tariffs again um 135% or
something along those lines of on the US
they stopped their postal services um
when I look around my house how much

(01:27):
stuff was made in China a lot yeah a lot
well not only that but now they're no
longer importing stuff made by Boeing um
so they're stopping all kinds of stuff
from that now we're seeing Vietnam no
longer uh importing stuff from us as
well so this tariff war is obviously
taking a huge hit uh but you know we

(01:49):
didn't we didn't vote for that we we
knew this was coming but there's there's
all kinds of other stuff that they
didn't vote for now far farmers are
losing too uh this immigration stuff the
immigration stuff I think is out of
control the cuts to uh Medicaid Social
Security that we're probably going to
see with this bill that went through the

(02:10):
House and is now in the Senate who knows
if if it will pass or not hopefully not
but we're seeing all kinds of stuff that
they're we didn't vote for this we don't
want to lose our social security we
don't want to lose our Medicare and
Medicaid like duh what What did you
think was going to happen i think the
immigration one is the right now the
most concerning how they're deporting
people who are citizens or have not done

(02:32):
nothing wrong and then like uh the guy
in El Salvador who they won't return um
and the Trump administration has decided
to defy the United States Supreme Court
and just openly not follow instructions
and so the court today and today is
April 16th held the Trump administration
in contempt oh they actually did that i

(02:55):
thought they were thinking about him
they did that but what does that
actually mean for Trump and his
administration i don't know what does
that mean he doesn't follow the rules
people think that's okay you know what I
mean like that's beyond terrifying
because if you are not following the
rules at the highest you know office in

(03:15):
the in the nation or you know the
Supreme Court
that means you're not going to do any
like nothing else matters that in my
opinion that's scary to me and there are
still people like we hear that there are
so many people changing their tune but
we hear on the other side too that the
narrative changes that it's Oh well this

(03:37):
is what we voted this is what we voted
for this is what we wanted we knew that
prices were going to go up we knew you
know this whole narrative of short-term
pain for long-term gain yada yada yada
bull bull you never once was that in any
of his campaign promises the whole
Ukraine war that was going to end in a

(03:57):
day all of this all of these promises
all of this garbage was is now a
complete turnaround the stock market the
idea that the stock oh don't look at the
stock market not a big deal we saw um
Dave Portney the the bar stool stool
sports guy I think it was during the
whole tariff thing where he in put in

(04:19):
the tariffs and then put back off the
tariffs on the tariffs on the tariffs
off uh he lost what was it 7 million in
a day and I think he's down to like 20
million now and he still supports him
he's down $20 million and he still
supports Trump and says I believe in him

(04:41):
why it's a bigger agenda do you really
want to talk about what the bigger
agenda is well I mean we could go into
that but I mean I guess we could talk
about like people's 401k losses you know
we were discussing that and I think
there's so many more people that are
affected by this than than rich people

(05:02):
you know the rich people are going to be
okay but everyone else is going to
suffer everyone that's losing money like
we talked about people that are trying
to retire in the next 6 months to a year
or even two years they're not going to
be able to recover from this so I I
don't
know but if they voted for Trump then I

(05:27):
I always will say you got what you voted
for whether you felt like it was going
to impact you or everybody else um you
got what you voted for and now we have
to fix the bigger problem of a a person
who wants to be a dictator um breaking
all the rules in the country like all
the rule the the court systems defying

(05:48):
all the court systems he's pretty much
lost every case that he's got that has
come against him and he's still doing it
right um Congress can stop this
absolutely but the Republicans are in
control and have decided to either be
compliant or complacent with him or

(06:08):
they're afraid i don't really know what
it is but there are blatant things
happening in the United States that are
scary right now
and it impacts mainly middle class the
lower people um the 1% are doing just
fine financially anyway well but you
will say though Boeing those who

(06:29):
contracted with um China and other
countries who he put tariffs on Canada
then Mexico they're losing money too
business-wise because why because now
they have to put that cost down to the
customer and people are going to stop
buying what I did hear today was people
trying to get ahead of the tariffs um

(06:50):
started to buy cars or get their cars
fixed because the prices of cars parts
are going to go up um and so they got
tried to get ahead of it in
March april will be different right like
you you saw retail sales go up in the
United States in March in April as as
this gets worse it's not going to be the

(07:11):
same people are going to stop spending
there are so many people who said that
they have to just now start to worry
about the bare necessities of day-to-day
living that they don't have time for the
extra stuff airlines are going to be
impacted right big time big time gas is
going to be impacted because you know
all that is going to get put on the
customer and we're going to see like the

(07:32):
the brick and mortar companies the small
mom and pop shops they're going to be
impacted the most people what whatever
is not a necessity will go first
yep and that's unfortunate and I think
uh I think it's very scary i think we
have to keep speaking up because as you
said you know the Republicans are
they're complacent but they're afraid to

(07:54):
be primared uh more than anything and I
think kind of the biggest thing that
I've heard is
is they're afraid to lose and they're
afraid of your vote more than anything
so if people keep speaking up and saying
we're done then I think they will start
to listen to their constituents more
than anything because they don't want to

(08:15):
lose i mean unless you're Marjorie
Taylor Green which I don't think she
listens to anybody in case I mean she
hasn't lost she hasn't lost well no but
she runs in
opposing her and voting for her right
but that's in Georgia you know what I
mean so in Arizona it might be a little
bit different but but what it boils down
to to me is power people like their

(08:35):
position in power right and that's more
that's worth more to them than doing
what's right you can see that in
Congress but if that is threatened if
their position in power is threatened
because of what they're doing and your
vote is the one that's going to threaten
their position in power I think that is
what's going to impact this the most so

(08:55):
and I think that's where Democrats where
it feels like the Democrats are not
doing enough to grab those voters cuz
there are a lot of people mad right now
even even talked about Well well we need
to have a whole thing about that and how
we get Democrats we talked about that
how the MAGA voters some of them are are
moving away from MAGA because now their

(09:16):
bottom line is impacted with 401ks and
losing money in and you know their 401ks
and retirement funds um but the
Democrats where are you like that's what
that's my question you see uh AOC and
Bernie Sanders drawing huge crowds huge
crowds in places like tons of money tons

(09:36):
of money in places like Utah and
uh Montana and Idaho i think it was just
red state red normally red states what
are the Dems going to do about that to
to capture that audience of voters i
don't know what you tell me what are we
doing what are we doing in our district

(09:57):
i can tell you what we're doing in our
district all right our district we are
um focusing on registering voters okay
um we are focusing on knowledge like up
upskilling voters in the area of
politics because a lot of people don't
know how a bill is passed and how that
really works so um I'm a regional lead
for my precinct and what we're doing is

(10:20):
sending out information protesting
um information on bills that are in the
state legislature i was just there
yesterday and um and they it was the
disabilities uh it was bill I I forgot
the number 1737 I think it was and it
was about getting uh reallocating funds

(10:40):
from people with disabilities and they
looked those parents and kids right in
the face and still voted to take money
from them yep and you know so things
like that it's just really sad and it
was biparty lines in the house they they
put three more people um in on the
committee just so they can get a vote
passed um that they said that uh would

(11:03):
so well we got to get it passed cuz the
money is going to run out uh Lauren
Kubby Senator Lauren Kubie put a clean
bill amendment in there they voted it
down they put a messy one in there and
they said we just need to get it in
there just so we can get it passed so we
can still fund it but it's the way it's
funded now is going to impact these
families where the caregivers are the

(11:25):
parents um or family members and somehow
the Republican party this is my
perception of what happened yesterday
were accusatory towards the parents um
because like they were stealing money
from the state no if your kid is
severely disabled has cerebopal pausy or
something where they are not functional
on their own you're with it's a 20 247

(11:48):
job and they have um things in place to
uh gatekeep you know that money and the
Republican party didn't even consider
any of that even the parents that got up
and talked about it they didn't consider
any of it but we have to so with issues
like that we have
to reach people with things that are

(12:10):
very important to them and register
people to vote really touch people in
things that are very important to them
and to understand what they need and
what they want in all districts and
spread that information to all those
people and I think that's kind of the
biggest takeaway

(12:30):
of getting people to understand what
you're actually voting for you voted for
these tariffs you may not have
understood it but this is what you voted
for so um we didn't vote for this and
that is key you know we have to get more
information out and really get people to
understand what they're actually voting
for and to pay attention to those things

(12:52):
and I think that's that's really what
what the issue is is that you did vote
for this and at the end of the day you
may not have realized it or known it but
this is what you voted for we're going
to talk more about that in future
episodes but uh in the next episode
we'll talk about small businesses uh in
the future we'll talk more about the
tariffs and how we're being affected by

(13:13):
that as well uh we'll get more into
local elections also here and in other
states uh but yeah so hope you enjoy
what we're talking about and get more
information if you have anything you
want us to talk about we'd be happy to
discuss that as well uh but thank you
for listening to Around the District
