This week we review the 2001 American science fiction psychological thriller film Donnie Darko written and directed by Richard Kelly in his directorial debut.
It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Drew Barrymore, Mary McDonnell, Katharine Ross, Patrick Swayze, and Noah Wyle, with Seth Rogen in his film debut in a minor role.
Set in October 1988, the film follows Donnie Darko (Gyllenhaal), a troubled teenager who inadvertently escapes a bizarre accident by sleepwalking. He has visions of Frank, a mysterious figure in a rabbit costume who informs him that the world will end in 28 days.
The podcast starts with a story about our recent stint on live radio and a couple of pet peeves and it rockets from there.
A funny start with the banter between the boys. "Unbearable!!" growls the Scotsman as they end the intro. But they warm up for the movie discussion.
"It's a big film in a lot of ways" says the Scotsman "and you get more from it from each viewing".
It's a sad coming of age film, exploring mental health and it has garnered a cult following. You will either love it or hate it. Either way you don't need to watch the movie to enjoy the podcast.
The Aussie loved the chemistry between the brother and sister not realising that the actors Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal are, infact, real life brother and sister.
