“The dreaming we do by day is so important because it gives birth to a deeper purpose and is what ultimately forms our future.” ~ Carol Spader
I was out with a group of people on a brutally cold January afternoon in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. It was miserable, the type of weather where dreams wither up and die. But, on this particular day, spring seemingly light years away, I met Carol Spader, a Certified Dream Manager®. Carol thrives on coaching people, many of whom are gainfully employed, to go after their dreams in tandem with their current schedules, instead of resisting their dreams, and putting them off until “someday.”
See, Carol had a front row seat watching a dream as it was severely challenged by circumstances. She was only a baby when her father was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. As she tells it, “My dad had risen through the military ranks quite quickly and was not only known as a standout jet mechanic but sought out, and promoted for his leadership qualities and the ability to connect with people. He was a rising star and loved his career. It was very much his identity, as well as my mom's. As his symptoms progressed, he became so rigid and stiff that he had to quit work and go on disability, around age 36 or so, with 4 children to support, me being the youngest, about age 5 or 6. It was the death of a dream. Through a child's eyes, I witnessed his struggle over the next 10 years to find new inspiration, new purpose and new dreams to go after, until he died.”
Carol believes that going after our dreams and our sense of purpose isn’t merely icing on cake, it’s essential to our very wellbeing. As a Certified Dream Manager®, she holistically guides people as they actively create their dreams. Talking to Carol, I’m reminded that dreams aren’t always dreamy and magic. They’re work. They take practice. There's a process involved. There’re obstacles. There’s frustration. There’re challenges. There’s everything that comes with living life.
AND they are important.

Cardiac Cowboys
The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
