Welcome back to the Halo 42 podcast. I am your host, Mark A.
Turnipseed, and this is my co-host and co-founder of Halo 42,
the wonderful, marvelous Tim Quinn.
Hey there, welcome back. I'm glad to be back. I know that. How are you doing today?
I'm doing just fine. I'm excited to talk to everybody today about the beginnings of Halo 42,

(00:38):
where it all came from, where the logo came from, where the products came from,
where the name came from, and how we came together to create this beautiful
project that we call Halo 42.
Y'all, the Halo 42 effect, by the way, I know that you see that printed around.
The Halo 42 effect is about recognizing your beauty so that you can recognize

(01:04):
the beauty outside of you, so that you can recognize the beauty that is in this
world, may it be other people or nature.
It was very early on in my serious recovery from very strong mental health issues
where I didn't recognize beauty anymore.
And I remember my walking down the street and my cousin looked down at a flower

(01:27):
and I was just in an extremely depressed space.
And he looks down at this flower and goes, wow, that's beautiful. And it made me cry.
It made me tear up a little bit because I had recognized that but throughout
the past 10 years of my life, maybe I had not really been able to capture beauty.
And it wasn't by looking at more flowers that I found beauty,

(01:49):
but it was rather by finding beauty within myself that I began to see the world
outside of me as beautiful.
Yeah, that's a great concept. And as you're talking, I'm just looking at this
keyboard and thinking how beautiful the colors are.
I think that it's just a mindset of noticing.
What's in front of you. Yeah. Once you can really notice the miracle that life

(02:10):
is, you can even take the pretty mundane, like little keyboard colors and see them as great beauty.
And that's really where magic starts to happen because you can look at something
like a couple of blocks and what? You can turn it into a pyramid.
Yeah. Well, and when it came to working with you, I think that I've always seen

(02:31):
that in beauty when I've worked with people over the years is when you finally
get them to notice the one thing that they're not paying attention to.
Because I find that most people tend to look to the negative first,
you know, I don't have a great nose, my chin is not so great,
my skin's wrinkly, blah, blah, blah, you know.
And then you shift that for a moment and say, oh my God, you have the most beautiful eyes.

(02:52):
And if they start to recognize that, to your point, Mark, all of a sudden,
everything else seems to look a little better.
Now, it's hard, though, because I remember when I was 230 pounds,
and I really hadn't really taken my shirt off in my own house in probably about a year.
I was so despised with what I looked like that having the positive words come

(03:15):
out would be quite a challenge, right? So what happens first?
What do you think is like the first step really?
Because I've been trying, I write about it and try to dissect it all the time,
And I really, the only thing I've come down to is I kind of fake it till I made it, right?
I started faking it, and then I started to believe what I had been telling myself,

(03:38):
you know? I mean, there's that. That works for people.
I think that for me, I know, listen, I went through a very personal experience
too when I was going through cancer.
And I would literally force myself in the bathroom with the thing attached to
my arm to look in the mirror.
I didn't like the way I looked, but I'd find one thing that I could hang on
to for that day. I was grateful to still be able to walk. I was grateful that

(03:59):
I had self-tanner to put on.
I was grateful that I was actually able to go out and help other people.
For me, that's always been the thing, is to shift what's making me feel negative
into giving back or doing for others. And for that, you find beauty.
And for you, you know, you find it in different ways. I think it's just,
you have to find what connects with you.
And then it just flows.

(04:21):
Yeah, I think there's something there that's just connecting with somebody else, right?
Connecting with somebody else in need or just connecting with a family or a
friend member can also help us just to see that we're grateful,
right? The gratitude attitude aspect in that.
Yeah. You hear it all the time. And I think I was saying to you this morning,
the longer I live, the more every cliche comes true.

(04:43):
But it's so very true that if you start off your day in a grateful mode,
and it could be grateful for whatever it might be.
We live in this beautiful country. We have fresh air. We have air conditioning, whatever it is.
It shifts so that you're not focused on the negative automatically.
And then from there, it's just things look brighter and you start to notice things.

(05:03):
Yeah, it's funny that you talk and you say, you know, that this is such a beautiful
country, because there's probably a million people that I could have sitting
on this chair right here who that would be the last example that they would
come up with right now. They would not say this is a beautiful country.
I too believe the same thing. I wake up in the morning and I feel I feel grateful to be an American.

(05:25):
But honestly, I feel like I could take this gratitude and I could be grateful
to be in any country that I do live in, right? Well, yeah.
You have to be grateful for being where you are. You have to start there.
Of course, we all maybe long to be in England or we long to be in Ireland or
Italy or whatever it might be.
But wherever you are, if you can be grateful for it. I mean,

(05:49):
I looked at that road trip this summer.
Every day I'd wake up somewhere I thought I'd never drive to.
And the most extraordinary, the river, the people, the town,
the prairie, the weather, something was extraordinary.
Extraordinary yeah sometimes if you just wait for it right if
you don't see it if you don't feel the gratitude and but as long as you stay

(06:09):
away from the negativity the something's going to come and show you the miracle
of life yeah it's that whole concept it's kind of how we met with getting back
to like how this brand began if you're open to what life brings you.
Life brings you miracles every moment. And if you're so stuck in your head or

(06:29):
so in a space that you can't notice what's there, I believe that the universe
just keeps poking you until you finally wake up.
Yeah. And it was a miracle, actually, that Tim and I even came together.
It was a miracle because I had no idea where I was headed.
All I know is I published a book, and then three months later,

(06:52):
it was tasked upon me to move down to South Florida and provide for my family.
And so that's what I did. I packed up my U-Haul from North Carolina where my
family still lives and I started driving.
And when I was halfway down, like somewhere south of Atlanta,
I received a phone call or a text message from Tim Quinn asking if I was a coach.

(07:18):
And I told Tim that I was closing my online business and that I was moving down
to South Florida, a little place called Boca Raton.
And it just so happened, Tim lived in Boca Raton.
And so that's where the miracle started for me.
And I remember being so nervous about that trip that it was like a leap of faith, right?
And as Tim was talking about, being open. So being open to changing the story

(07:43):
of one's life, changing the story of your life.
If your life is is about feeling negative towards yourself and towards others
and towards this country that we live in, if your life is about negativity.
Then that's going to be what continues to breed and manifest in you.
But if your life becomes about beauty and miracles and openness,

(08:06):
then that's also what your life is going to open up towards you,
and you will start to notice that beauty.
A hundred percent. And it's funny, every time I hear the word beauty,
it takes me back so much because...
I know we've had this conversation. It's such a personal thing,
and beauty doesn't necessarily mean the stereotypical Hollywood version of beautiful.

(08:27):
Beauty is just, to me, this possibility to be opening to love,
and that starts with loving yourself.
Yeah. In a quote in one of my books that I was reading last night,
the girl was talking about a very unruly, distasteful-looking woman,
and she was describing her facial features.
And then at the very end of this sentence, you would have thought that she was

(08:48):
going to end it by saying, and this woman was a witch.
But instead, she ended it by, and she found out how to see the beauty in her, period.
And then the next chapter began.
And I remember just being really perplexed by that, because I feel that.
I feel that when I recognize that.

(09:11):
But I've never really heard that outside of our discussions inside of this beauty space.
So I know that other people can tap into this, and I know that people do.
And it's partly, I keep coming back to how we were talking about the brand,
and it's reminding me, because you'll tell the story of what the Halo 42 is.
But in various points in my life, whether it was me who was in the hospital,

(09:35):
or when I've been with people who are in some point of distress where,
you know, it seems like there's no hope.
And those are the people that when they are able to shift their perspective
and recognize beauty, I mean, I've met some of the most beautiful people in
the world who are terminally ill and the glow from them is so different because.

(09:58):
There's a peacefulness, there's an acceptance. And from that,
this like pure love flows forward.
And I think that that's, you know, when you had to dream about the upside down
rainbow and, you know, looking into what that was and did it exist and that
being part of the halo family of circumventual arcs and what those are and where they are, that's that.

(10:20):
That is that. It's about shifting the perspective. It's kind of like going out
and finding your own and rainbow too. I've always liked that idea.
When we can't find our hope, when we can't find and don't feel beauty,
it's really about actually taking a crank and shifting your perspective.
Yeah. It's like that whole, you know, that song, When You Need a Little Christmas?

(10:42):
If it's not Christmas, it's the middle of July and you feel bleak,
you put on some Christmas music and start decorating the house.
You can't help but be in a good mood.
Yeah. You know, it's the shifting of your perspective and it starts from within.
And, you know, our beauty brand was born from that because if you can,
as you have taught me to be a little more mindful with everything I do rather

(11:05):
than rushing through it,
you start to feel and, you know, I do it more for others than I do myself. So it was a lesson for me.
But the human touch is such a precious thing.
You know, being able to look at yourself in the mirror is is extraordinary.
And sometimes it's a lot easier for people to be kind and do for others rather

(11:26):
than connect with themselves.
And connecting with yourself is where it all begins, to your point.
Yeah, connecting to yourself is the most important, and giving yourself an embrace, right?
To be able to truly embrace yourself is a very difficult challenge.
I think that, you know, I've done that practice a couple times in my life where,

(11:47):
you know, I've done it either where you have to stare at someone in the eyes,
like nose to nose, until you recognize what's there.
Doing it in the mirror, if you've never done that, is such an extraordinary
and powerful tool to connect with yourself.
Yeah, I did it last night. I did it last night because I felt very disconnected
from myself, and I decided to go stare in the mirror.

(12:08):
And we talked about this on our last show, how you got to go past that level of discomfort, right?
So it's like uncomfortable at first, and then you continue to do it and you
go right past that level of uncomfort and then you're going to notice the sparkle at some point. Yeah.
I mean, I see it happen all the time when I'm working with people,
when we've done classes.

(12:30):
There's always in a group someone who's less comfortable, right?
And when they suddenly turn on.
It's kind of like when you have the lights on a tree that, you know,
one's not twinkling right, and when they all get going, they all shine brighter.
And that's part of the Halo 42 effect.
Yeah. And that is our goal. That's our goal is to turn on everybody's little love light.

(12:50):
I mean, it's as simple as that. And doing it in a ritualistic way with skincare,
is just the beginning, as far as I know.
And here's the thing, guys. You guys out there, you can help us take out,
take the Halo 42 effect out into the world.
That doesn't mean you have to get a megaphone and go start announcing the Halo 42 effect.

(13:11):
That just means you need to go into your mirror tonight and when you do,
utter some words of self-love and begin to recognize your own beauty.
Because I swear, I swear that by, with time, when you recognize your beauty,
you're going to start to recognize the beauty in other people.
And once you recognize that something's beautiful, it's like impossible not to love it.

(13:34):
That's how we're spreading love through the world, recognizing the beauty and spreading love.
Yeah, it's no different than when you've never heard of something before,
like a car or whatever, and somebody brings it into your attention and you see
it, and then all of a sudden you start to recognize it everywhere,
and it's been there all along.
It's just opening up your mindset a little to not be so narrow-minded.

(13:58):
Once you start to see what's actually so joyful of the life we live.
And no matter what circumstance you're in, you don't have to wait until you
think you have the perfect job, the perfect body, the perfect partner,
whatever it might be, because that may never come along.
So stop waiting. Live life.

(14:18):
Yeah. As I said to you today, every once in a while, if you don't pay attention,
the universe gives you a nudge and takes something away that you weren't expecting to leave.
So, you know, be appreciative of what you have and who's in your life and what's around because.
That love is only momentary. And that energy never leaves.

(14:39):
But if you don't recognize the worth of everybody and everything around you, you're missing out.
Yeah, that's very true. Including yourself. Y'all, this is such an important
topic to get to understand when you're using our brand.
Because we really feel out of it. This is why we're not in Ulta and Sephora yet.
And it's why we're not on QVC or some big mainstream type platform.

(15:03):
Form is because we really want to make sure that people understand that every
time you're using the Halo 42, you're reminded to go back into that mindful state of self-love.
And next week, we're really excited to hop back on the microphone because now
we're going to start talking about the evolution of the products.
So now that y'all understand the brand a little bit, the mindfulness behind

(15:25):
it, really, you know, our bigger mission.
Now let's dive into some of the skincare secrets, some of the beauty secrets,
why and how we came about this Copaiba ingredient.
And some of the crazy adventures it took to get there.
And what we went through to bring that to market here in the United States. We're excited.

(15:46):
We're excited, excited, excited to be doing this podcast. Can't wait to...
