Frederic Morton wurde 1924 als Fritz Mandelbaum im 17. Wiener Gemeindebezirk geboren. Die Häuser rundherum gehörten seiner Familie – Eisenwarenfabrikanten mit Geschichte: Sein Großvater schmiedete einst Medaillen für Kaiser Franz Joseph. 1939 musste die Familie fliehen, über England nach New York. Aus Fritz wurde Frederic, aus Mandelbaum Morton – ein Schritt, den sein Vater vollzog, um sich gegen den Antisemitismus selbst in der Neuen Welt zu schützen.
