Now let's continue on our story about Pepe, the hero of Circus Jack.
Chapter 9. Into the Ring. Fridays and Saturdays drew peak attendance for the circus.
Spectavelli's mood always lifted on the weekend, and families flocked to the
(00:32):
show to escape their daily toils on farms and in towns.
Just for a few moments in their hard lives, The audience wanted to be amazed
by the spectacle of exotic performance under the massive tent.
A low drone of excited chatter and laughter filled the air as families and friends
gathered under the big tent.
The rustle of people arriving, the creak of wooden chairs, and sounds of animals
(00:56):
out of sight added to the building anticipation that filled the air.
The dazzling sight of the tent, with its vibrant blue and white stripes,
stretching high into the sky stoked the customer's imagination.
The tiers of seats looked down on the white performance ring as round as the
tent top and two feet high, containing fluffy light-colored dry dirt.
(01:19):
The aisles filled with eager spectators bustling to find a seat in the crowded stands.
The tantalizing scent of buttery popcorn wafted through the air,
enticing children who darted around and begged their parents for a bag.
Excitement and anticipation radiated from their shining eyes and wide grins.
As the crowd settled into their seats, a cheerful clown dressed as a woman with bouncy red curls,
(01:45):
a bulbous black nose, and a painted smile strolled the outer edge of the ring
engaging the children, with playful waves, simple tricks, and exaggerated falls
that sent them into fits of giggles.
No one could be more excited than Sweetie and Peppy, standing backstage as they
waited their turn to perform for the first time in front of a paying crowd,
(02:06):
and with Spectabelly watching.
Sweetie couldn't help biting her lip, looking at the others with a forced smile
while Peppy walked in tight circles his body shaking.
Three jugglers stood in the center ring, their tall frames silhouetted against
the bright lights above.
Their performance appeared as a professional ballet.
(02:26):
Twelve balls of different colors soared through the air as the men calmly weaved
through each other as if braiding hair.
Each toss required precise timing and coordination, the balls flying in a complex
pattern that seemed impossible to follow.
As they added more balls into the routine, the air became a blur of color and
(02:47):
movement as as people in the audience held their breath, hands gripping the edge of their seats.
With every successful catch, each juggler's face showed a look of concentration
and determination, sweat glistening on their foreheads.
An explosion of applause and shrill whistles of joy burst out when the jugglers
caught all the balls, as they fell to earth from the top of the tent,
(03:10):
taking a deep and prolonged bow.
With a final wave to the crowd, they sprinted around the ring high-fiving members
of the audience before disappearing behind the curtains at the back of the tent.
It's showtime, Sweetie whispered to Peppy. She gave him a squeeze in her arms.
From behind the curtain, Mr. Spectivelli appeared on the performance floor to
(03:33):
the surprise of all performers, most of all Sweetie.
He walked out to the center of the ring dressed in a theatrical red overcoat
with brass buttons down the front tunic, black pants and shiny shoes.
On his head a tall top hat, in his hand a magician's wand of red and white.
Ladies and gentlemen, he bellowed through a wide megaphone sweeping the audience
(03:55):

brought scattered claps from the audience sweetie gestured

four feet long in the middle of the performance area and then set a narrow vertical
hoop on a stand that would fit peppy's tiny frame if he went through precisely

the ring his short legs a blur of motion and ears flapping from the run.
(05:23):
After gathering enough speed, Sweetie shouted a signal and he cut toward the
bench launching his body from its surface into a somersault of two rotations.
Flipping through the hoop with ease landing on his feet.
The audience burst into applause.
Peppy returned to Sweetie, whose hand delivered a treat.
They repeated the trick to a more tepid response. I can do that,
(05:47):
a man shouted from the seats.
His wife delivered an elbow between his ribs to a scatter of laughter.
Spectivelli began to scowl. With another hand gesture, Sweetie dispatched Peppy
to behind the rear curtain.
Moments later he reappeared with a beautiful white stallion strolling out to
the ring, fitted with a tiny saddle, and Peppy dressed as a tiny cowboy in leather
(06:11):
chaps and hat, a checkered shirt, and a stem of alfalfa clenched in his teeth.
The crowd burst into laughter.
Peppy nodded to them with appreciation.
Sweetie brought the stallion to the center of the ring and kneeled on one leg behind the horse.
From Sweetie's thigh, Peppy launched himself onto the horse's back and climbed into the saddle.
(06:33):
Once settled in, he stroked the horse's black mane like a real cowpoke,
bringing out more laughter among the children and adults. bolts.
Spectavelli took notice.
Sweetie placed the horse reins in Peppy's paws as the dog and pony show walked the ring.
Peppy bobbed and swayed to the horse's gentle cadence, tipping up his hat on
(06:55):
occasion and looking into the audience as he passed by.
On the second loop around the ring, Peppy climbed out of the saddle and straddled the horse's head.
His legs spread just over the stallion's ears.
Peppy raised a paw, as if waving to the crowd.
Applause started to build, and Spectivelli's scowl began to soften.
(07:16):
Turning to the center, Peppy jumped from the horse's head into the arms of Sweetie
as she held him above her head to full applause.
Sweetie delivered another treat Peppy ran backstage, and Sweetie turned to the
audience with the megaphone.
Some of you may have heard of the new sport called basketball.

(07:40):
Have you seen a dog play against a horse?
Peppy reappeared in the ring, accompanied by a man who placed a straw basket on one side of the ring.
The white stallion, easily standing towering twenty hands above Peppy,
faced him looking down at the underdog.
Sweetie tossed Peppy the ball, and he began dribbling the ball with his nose,
(08:02):
running underneath the horse and around its legs as the stallion tried to block Peppy's advance.
The children in the audience stood on their seats to watch and began shouting,
