Operation Mockingbird was a U.S. national security tool focused on manipulating media and public perception for geopolitical aims. Frank Wisner's "Mighty Wurlitzer," an informal network of over 400 American journalists and cultural figures, secretly collaborated with the CIA to spread propaganda and shape opinion, primarily to counter communism. Methods for this "perception management" were tested on the American public through the government's handling of UFOs, debunking narratives through scientific and academic bodies. The legacy of Mockingbird, revealed by the Church Committee and journalists like Carl Bernstein, led to a catastrophic collapse in public trust, fostering today's disinformation crisis.

  • Cognitive Warfare: A form of conflict that targets human cognition, beliefs, and decision-making processes to manipulate an adversary without their awareness, aiming to degrade their ability to discern truth.
  • Limited Hangout: An intelligence community tactic of admitting to and revealing a limited, less-damaging portion of a covert or illegal operation in order to preempt or prevent the exposure of the full, more damaging truth.
  • PSYOP (Psychological Operations): The historical and still widely used term for operations designed to influence the attitudes and behavior of foreign target audiences in support of political and military objectives.
  • Gray PSYOP: A category of psychological operation where the source of the disseminated information is deliberately ambiguous or unattributed, often made to appear from a non-official or indigenous source.
  • Black PSYOP: Psychological operations where the source is falsely attributed, often to an adversary, to sow maximum confusion and discord. This is the most deceptive form of propaganda.
