Laura Grillo, a 37-year-old mother of three from Rowlett, Texas, was tragically murdered on November 13, 2015—just eight days before her planned wedding. She was found shot in the head in her kitchen, with no signs of forced entry, though a safe in the master bedroom had been emptied. Investigations revealed that her fiancé, Ioannis “John” Makris, orchestrated a murder-for-hire plot, paying his employees, Jesus Trevino and James Villeda, to carry out the killing. Makris was convicted of capital murder in September 2018 and sentenced to life in prison without parole. Trevino received the same sentence in February 2019, while Villeda accepted a plea deal for a 25-year sentence in exchange for his testimony against the other two. The case garnered national attention and was featured in true crime series such as ABC’s “20/20” and Oxygen’s “A Wedding and a Murder.”
