Berättelsen följer den unge Luke Skywalker, som lever ett stillsamt liv på ökenplaneten Tatooine tills han av en slump kommer över två droid-robotar, R2-D2 och C-3PO. I droidarna finns ett hemligt meddelande från prinsessan Leia, fångad av det onda Imperiet och dess mäktige ledare Darth Vader. Med hjälp av den gamle jedimästaren Obi-Wan Kenobi, smugglarduon Han Solo och Chewbacca, beger sig Luke ut på ett äventyr för att rädda Leia och hjälpa rebellalliansen förstöra Imperiets fruktade supervapen – Dödsstjärnan.
John Williams legendariska filmmusik spelar en avgörande roll i filmens känslomässiga genomslag. Den mäktiga öppningsmarschen – “Main Title” – sätter direkt en episk ton och har blivit ett av de mest igenkännbara styckena i filmhistorien.
