Sie ist Absolventin der Filmakademie Ludwigsburg und erhielt für ihre Arbeit schon viele Auszeichnungen, u.a. 2016 den First Steps Award für ihren ersten Spielfilm „Haus ohne Dach“. Zuletzt feierte sie einen großen Erfolg mit der Disney+-Serie „Sam - Ein Sachse“, und ihr zweiter Spielfilm „Sieger Sein“ hatte bei der 74. Berlinale in der Sektion Generation Weltpremiere (Kinostart am 11. April!).
Ich sprach Anfang Februar mit Soleen Yusef über ihr filmisches Schaffen und die Anfänge ihrer Karriere; wie sie sich in einer weiß und männlich dominierten Filmwelt durchsetzen konnte; wie sie ihre kritische Stimme nutzt, auch solidarisch für und mit anderen historisch marginalisierten Gruppen; was sie über den vermeintlichen Gegensatz zwischen Diversität und Antidiskriminierung vs. 'künstlerischer Freiheit' denkt; und was eigentlich einen guten Film ihrer Meinung nach ausmacht.
