so you wanna learn how to write melodies
that are gonna get stuck in people's heads
just like
all these melodies that you keep humming everyday
and you're like this is so catchy
why is this stuck in my head
probably sometimes you're thinking
I wish this wasn't so catchy
so it wasn't stuck in my head all the time hahaha

but learning how to write catchy melodies is important
if you wanna appeal to the masses
and not even the masses
but if you want to appeal to anyone
uh having some catchy melodies is always a good thing
and so to talk about catchy melodies
we have Coach Juliana from our team here

we already talked about a bunch of other stuff

but we haven't really dug deep into
into melodies on this podcast before
even though I firmly believe that melody is king
and melody is the most important thing
good because it's what people are gonna remember
and it's what goes across language barriers
yep and everything
melody is important and um

I think a lot of times
people spend a lot of time on writing better lyrics
and sometimes even a lot of time on writing good chords
and chord progressions and things like that
and I'm like dude
you literally cannot copyright chord progressions
yeah like
it's not that important
and then when it comes to melodies
they don't really think about it anymore
and I'm like but it

that's the most important piece just to stop
it's where the money is
it's where the money is baby
it's where the money is
it's where it's gonna get stuck in people's heads
yeah exactly
yeah yeah yeah
how do you go about writing melodies
how do I go about it honestly
like melodies usually come to me first

(03:10):
cause I am a little songbird
I sing all the time
I don't know what I'm singing most of the time
but I am creating sounds so when I hear something
when I do something that's like oh
that's interesting
it's usually because it's melodically telling
like there's some sort of repetition
there's some sort of pattern

(03:30):
that feels good for the brain to hear it
like a a little scratch of the brain
um so usually
um I just sit with it and I repeat it
and I'm like okay
this is this is cool
like let's yeah
let's go with it so that's where the melody begins
but we wanna make sure that
we're talking about pop writing here
so just yeah

(03:51):
let's focus on that no
that would be a whole other thing
we want a lot of repetition
cause we want people to be able to repeat it and
you know whether the song is playing in your car
or in your phone or whatever
or you're asleep and you're trying to sleep
and you're like that's the me espresso
like no like
you know like
get out of my head it's in there

(04:13):
I'm sorry it's in there
it's it was everywhere
like Sabrina is the queen of catchy
um so
if you're ever wanting to study a singer
that does catchy like
all of her songs are like TikTok sounds
because it's so Dang catchy
so yeah
just pay attention to what your brain likes
and what it repeats

(04:33):
and usually it's just a lot of that simple repetition
like
simple melodies that just you can sing over and over
that will get ingrained in your mind
yeah well
you're basically already answering my next question
which was gonna be what makes something catchy
yeah it's just being able to sing it

(04:54):
being able to replicate it
you know anyone can replicate
like the amount of times I've seen like
TikTok videos of babies singing
you know a famous song
and they don't they're not saying words
they're just like
LA LA LA
LA LA whatever
they're just like
creating that same melody
it's because it's easy
because it's possible for anyone to sing it right

(05:16):
it's not vocally incredible and challenging
no it's simple
it's easy it's accessible
yes it's accessible
I like that too
that's a nice different word for simple
it's accessible it's accessible
and the repetition of it and I do
I do think that a lot of times

(05:37):
especially
this is a this is a very common issue
with people that are more educated in music
like
they do play an instrument or they do know music theory
like yes
that can be helpful
but sometimes it can also be an issue
they make stuff too complicated

(05:58):
because they know how simple it is
and they're like no
this is too simple like
I wanna make it more complicated
I wanna make it yeah
more interesting exactly uh
and
I mean we were talking about birds of a feather
in a different episode but like
that's just another perfect example of birds of

(06:20):
it's literally two notes right
in the pre chorus
and then obviously the rest of the song is different
but
uh not being afraid of making something stupid simple
no right
that's usually overcomplicating it
yeah that's what's gonna stick on people's heads
and you know
when you introduced today's episode

(06:42):
you said like
it's the easiest way to break language barriers
like if I say da da
everyone's gonna sing it
they don't know what the heck they're saying
but the amount of people that song reached
and it's just a little
like can't go simpler than that

(07:04):
like it's just easy
that's that's what I think
catchy is easy cause
I think you have to remember
that the vast majority of people
that will consume your music
are not trained in music
and that's why I think people who are trained in music
make stuff too complicated
yeah because they think that everybody's like them

(07:25):
mm hmm the vast majority of people are not like you
um and that means even if you are not trained in music
that is totally okay
you can still write incredible stuff
incredibly catchy music yeah
and melodies and good lyrics and all of that stuff
you don't need to be trained no
in this to write so it could be an advantage

(07:45):
I'm not saying that for sure
if you have training in music
you're fucked like no no
like you're gonna be okay
it's gonna be fine yeah um
I have you know
like I have my degree from Berkeley
and I have so much uh
music theory under my belt
and I play guitar and piano and
you know all that
but I don't use any of that

(08:06):
yeah when I'm writing I
I don't write from an analytical standpoint
I write from a feeling yeah
um standpoint
so anyways don't overcomplicate it
yeah is the whole message absolutely
and also making sure that your repetition
doesn't get the best of you
and create contrast within your repetition

(08:26):
yes ma'am
yes ma'am
good melodies are all about the balance
between repetition and contrast
yeah repetition is what makes it catchy
if there's too much repetition
it's boring uh huh
there's a difference between catchy and boring
it's not the same thing
um I usually say that
you wanna have repetition within a song section

(08:46):
and then contrast between the song sections
yes absolutely yeah
you don't want the same exact copy paste
copy paste
copy paste cause that's it does
it will get boring at some point
and we have a little story of one of our students
Elizabeth hello
if you're watching
she has a very cool song
and I hope she's gonna share it with y'all very soon
but
her verse and her chorus were exactly the same melody

(09:10):
exactly the same rhythm and I was like
it is a very cool melody and it's a very cool rhythm
but you already did it give us something else
so all we did was race it a little bit
and change the rhythm a little bit
and it just created this like
bigger feeling of a chorus
and like it explodes now
and it feels so much cooler um

(09:33):
without doing a lot of work
like you're just changing a little bit
to add that contrast within the repetition
and you're creating a different section
to repeat in the chorus so it's just like
a lot more you know
fun for whoever's listening
and they can sing along and they can sing along
I usually say that if I as a trained musician

(09:55):
cannot sing along to your song
by the time I'm hearing the second chorus
it's too complicated yeah
like I wanna be able to sing together with you
in that second course not the lyrics
I'm not gonna remember the lyrics
I don't even remember the lyrics
when I Learned the song okay
but I wanna remember the melody
I wanna be able to sing together with you

(10:19):
like at least when we hit
like the
the third course like at the end of the song
I wanna be able to sing together with you
but ideally by the time we reach the second course
and again this is because I am trained in music
so somebody who's not trained in music
might listen to your song all the way through once
and then can sing together with you
um or
maybe they sing together with you in the third course

(10:39):
but either way
we need to be single repetition
yeah it's single
it needs to be singable singable yeah
um but then again
like you said with Elizabeth
you can't just copy
paste your same melodies throughout the whole song

verse and there's no verse chorus

to create contrast you said like
change the pitch change the rhythm
so let's say that your melody is like

da da da da
your 4 line cannot be da da da

it can be da da da like oh
there's a new note there
maybe the rhythm is the same
but it's the tiniest baby note
that goes up instead of down
and instantly like
someone's gonna be like ooh
what is that that's new
yeah right
so it makes your ear perk up like
oh okay
what's next and then you're being drawn into the

(12:27):
into the song so yeah
melody changes are the easiest
for me uh
or for people whoever
whoever starting to create contrast
melody changes just like
instead of the note going down
go up or the opposite you know
so easy um
rhythm changes
maybe wait a little bit for your line to start
and then you hit it

(12:48):
or you hold on to a note a little longer
and then you come back right
yeah there's so many ways to play with that um
I think that's like the easiest to like
melody changing and then rhythm changing 100%
and there's so many different ways to change a melody
and to change the rhythm and uh
we actually added a few ways to create contrast

there's a couple different ways
to create contrast in there
but again remember
don't overcomplicate it

and if you wanna create catchy songs
there needs to be repetition and it needs to be simple
you know the
the this uh
saying kiss
keep it
keep it simple stupid or keep it stupid simple
yeah I
I never know which way around it goes
keep it keep it stupid simple

I actually I think it's keep it simple stupid
but I always like
why isn't it not keep it stupid simple
because that makes so much more sense in my brain
but whichever way around it is
just keep it simple hahaha
kiss with one s hahaha
yeah keep it
keep it really really really
really simple um
anything else

when it comes to creating melodies that are catchy
no I feel like
like you mentioned it
don't feel the need to go crazy with your melodies
to go like
super smart if you want a catchy melody
you're gonna have more success with being catchy
if you keep it a little bit more on the

(14:34):
not like
cliche side but go for the easy things like
go for them and
you know you can always edit a song
you can always make it more fun whatever
but feel feel the difference between being extra catchy
then you're probably gonna like that more
sometimes it depends yeah yeah yeah definitely
if you're a friend who knows nothing about music

(14:56):
likes it and can sing it back to you
you're on the right track
hahaha

actually get started with writing
cause at the end of the day
you can learn about it all you want
if you never actually do anything with it
well you're still not writing a song
or you're still not writing a complete song
how many times have you seen people start a song
and then they never finish it
oh my god so many
including myself

(16:39):
oh sure it happens to the best of us
it happens to the best of us
I have like
I have made it my rule to always finish it
even if I hate it just finish it
just finish it like
I've stopped doing that which is great
but yeah
I used to do it all the time
yeah yeah same
but I always say you can't release unfinished songs new
and also it is easier to edit something

(17:03):
then to come up with something
yeah so even if you don't like it
like you just said even if you don't like it
just write it down or just record it and what not
like it doesn't mean you have to release it
but maybe you know
a couple weeks later
a couple months later or the next day or whatever
you come back to it and you make some edits to it
and you're like okay
well now it's actually not that bad
yeah
so yeah

(17:23):
I can't believe I heard um
a Billie Eilish say this once
but they
I like her and Phineas when they write songs
they just keep editing their songs
until they're good enough to be on a record
they don't write songs for the sake of writing songs
every song they write ends up on the record
I'm like wow

(17:44):
I don't know anyone else who does that
yeah I mean
they're so specific
which is awesome cause it works for them
I don't think that applies to every songwriter ever
but it is very cool
yeah and also
they've been doing it for a really long time
like at this point
they know what they're doing
if you're new to songwriting
I don't recommend doing it
no the drivers are crazy
