(00:00):
The head owner of Day One Caring Bar. Thank you for coming along for a healthy
dad combo. Absolutely, Chris.
So I saw Matty's ads on Instagram for dad bod to rad bed transformation.
I thought that's a great topic to get into.
So many of us struggle when we have that first kid sort of stacking on a bit of extra weight.
And it's really good to get out there and just feel good, move and train.
(00:24):
Tell us a bit about yourself, Matt. it well yeah
i'm a dad myself we've baby number
three arrived two weeks ago so
you know we're local to the shire
area run our local business and we cater primarily for a lot of busy moms and
(00:45):
dads sure in exactly the same position that we're in simply because we understand
you know the ins and and outs of trying to find that time to be able to fit in some,
you know, training and exercise to just have that balance.
So there's a good dad specs. You've got three kids, two-week-old?
Two-week-old. So congratulations for coming out here today.
(01:08):
Do you have a good dad joke loaded and prepped for us? You know,
I wish you primed me up on this one. That's okay.
Because my good dad jokes are off the cuff and normally are really terrible.
My wife hates them. Okay. So we'll come back to you. We'll take some offline content for that.
Now so personal training i
think one of the things that you struggle with as a
dad is finding the time so like right now the only exercise i
(01:29):
can do is tram walks and i see a little gym that i walk
past like oh i should do that or we're here next to the practice and
i try to get a workout at lunch yeah how do you sort of get dads moving or get
mums moving how do you sort of train them i saw you had a mums and bubs class
and all sorts of cool things we do and it's it's a great question And it can
be actually a very hard answer because it's so different for many parents.
(01:52):
I think one of the first things is, you know, if you need to have like the open
lines of communication on schedule and routine. Oh, absolutely.
I myself find my routine so out of whack right now.
It's ironic because, you know, my wife and I own a gym.
(02:14):
Yeah. And I will find it hard right now to be able to participate.
So where I normally used to enjoy training at 5 a.m. in the morning,
it's not realistic right now because, you know, breastfeeding and that changes
around that time in the morning and taking care of the other two kids.
So you need to be realistic with your routine and know where you can find the time to fit it in.
(02:38):
I think that would really resonate with the good people of the Shire because...
The dads I talk to, like whether I'm saying in the practice or out in the community, it is really hard.
And they really, all of a sudden, really appreciate how much free time you had
when you didn't have a kid. And they are bundles of joy.
But you have so much more things you need to do in the day. Yeah.
That said, let's say, you know, a dad only has a few hours in the day to do something.
(03:04):
Well, a few minutes to do something. What are some quick tips just to keep them
moving, maybe build some core strength so they avoid the common back injury
of lifting that five kilo bub?
Any tips you can give them? Yeah, absolutely. I think nowadays and coming out
of the lockdown period, people got really savvy with their training and exercise.
(03:25):
Where you had no access to a gym facility, you can get pretty creative around
the house and utilize furniture or taking a garage and getting some like a 15-step calisthenics routine.
Routine you'd be surprised and the benefits of doing that two or three times a week and.
(03:45):
How it would make you feel so yeah now
this is a deeper one but philosophically i also
ask people for dad vice so if you had to give your you
know younger self or one of the new blokes coming into the gym for the
first time some dad vice is there anything you would tell them
you know who the boss
is okay it's a
(04:07):
tiny dictator but so so when
there's uh you know the the support is
there i think it should be reciprocated and
if you're seeking you know a bit of that
time out for yourself you know
yeah it should be there as long as the the support is
there and it goes both ways yeah so i
(04:28):
thought it might be fun for us to do something like i've been doing a series of
talking about medical stuff while i plank or we're here
in a beautiful gym at kilowheed just nice opportunity to maybe do
some push-ups or something as we chat you're on board with that you're okay
with that so i think i'm gonna okay so we're planking and one of the most common
injuries i see with blokes is back pain so back pain so common you know you
(04:48):
start off lifting this two to three kilo little baby not a problem but then
you start adding weight to that baby.
And boy, oh boy, do a lot of people get some back pain.
The main thing they can do for back pain is one, stay active and moving, but two, doing planks.
Now, how long can you plank for? You're doing pretty well over there, I can see.
Oh, I'm not gonna amp it up, but let's just say a minute. A minute? I think a minute.
(05:16):
So that's pretty good. I did read a cool study recently that said movement and
physical exercise has got to be a cornerstone of treatment for depression.
So a lot of dads can get a little low in their mood, and that's why I love getting
an EP, an exercise physiologist, or a physio involved.
And I also saw you guys had some remedial massage. Is that true?
Yeah, we do. My brother, my twin brother, is an exercise physiologist,
(05:37):
and he does sports remedial massage.
So we kind of intertwine that into our services at the gym. Okay.
I'm going to come out of the plank now.
Oh okay so i sort of
had some fun classes as well they're pretty affordable there was
a rigged class there was mums and bubs class yeah i
went to mums and bubs yoga i snuck in i've got me
(05:58):
a sneak access pass the other day i like it yeah tell
us a bit about those yeah so we just wanted to make
sure and it's actually a creative and you
know from my wife because when we had our first child
really it was her idea
to create a class that would cater
for not only moms but dads are more than welcome to come
(06:20):
along too all right i'm coming yep where we could
you know create a time in
the day where parents could bring their kids along and participate
in exercise that was realistic that
would make them feel good when you know they were walking out the
doors but at the the same time their kids could be
(06:40):
by their side all right so look if people want to
find you what's the best way to track down your gym what's
your social handles what's the best way to get yeah so our instagram is day
one training carrying bar that's where you can find us our email is at hello
at day one training.com.au and that would probably be the you know simplest Yeah, definitely.
(07:05):
And yeah, if you've got a tip for staying healthy as a dad, feel free to leave
it in the comments. If you've got an exercise or you want to leave us a bit of...
Music.
