Det är vinter årsskiftet 1849-50. I den lilla byn Lindåsen, Hedesunda ligger Per Ersson till sängs, sjuk och orkeslös. Det har han gjort sedan i höstas. För att gården ska fungera har Pers hustru Stina Jonsdotter dragit ett mycket stort lass, samtidigt som hon tagit hand om både sin sjuka make samt deras fyra barn har hon sett till att hushållets samtliga sysslor blivit utförda i tid. Till sin hjälp har hon haft den stilige drängen...
Från omkring år 1570 till 1660 flyttar tusentals bönder från de östra delarna av Finland över Bottenviken till Sverige för att slå sig ner i de mellansvenska skogsbygderna. De lockas av stora ödemarker för svedjebruk och skattefrihet visst antal år. Med sig har de egna traditioner, seder och bruk men också en stark animistisk syn på naturen, allt har en själ, och att människan till viss del kan bemästra den genom riter och trolldom...
Om man tittar på E4 norr om Gävle i stort, inte bara vid Skarvberget, har det historiskt varit en sträcka där många allvarliga olyckor skett. Sträckan mellan Gävle och Axmartavlan har ofta kallats för "dödens väg". Medan vissa säger att de många olyckorna genom åren orsakats av konstruktionsfel vid vägbygget vill andra skylla på övernaturliga varelser, på troll och tomtar men framförallt småfolket - vittra.
