La storia di Maddalena è una storia di ordinaria violenza economica. Maddalena si sposa molto giovane con un uomo che provvede ai bisogni materiali della sua famiglia, ma che chiede in cambio una completa sottomissione da parte della moglie. Priva di risorse economiche proprie e incastrata in una relazione che limita sempre di più la sua libertà, Maddalena finisce poco per volta a essere completamente relegata al ruolo di caregiver non retribuita. Nessuna penitenza, però, deve essere eterna: grazie all'aiuto della figlia ormai adulta e all'emergere di una nuova consapevolezza, anche la vita di Maddalena finalmente può cambiare.
