(00:11):
Welcome to Season 2 of Imperfect Genius, the podcast that provides technical advice oneffectively navigating the business development journey and offers advice on building
successful careers in the tech industry.
I'm your host, Rachel Foster, a tech professional, educator, and entrepreneur.
That's right, folks, you heard me.
We're doing seasons now.
Yep.
So let's talk about, let's start there.
(00:34):
Why am I doing seasons?
So...
The end of 2024 was difficult for me in my personal life.
And I suffered a personal loss in January.
Plus I wanted to take a break over the holiday season.
And I just needed to slow down a bit.
I needed some breathing room.
(00:55):
And even though I decided to take a break and I needed some breathing room, I stillreleased three episodes in January.
Again, they were three episodes that were repeats of last year.
if you're a regular listener, then you know this, but I still had to record the newintros.
I still had to do the editing of, know, or not me.
I've got a, I've got a guy who does my editing, but, um, I had to get that, you know, thatstuff over to him to do the editing.
(01:20):
So there was still, my point is there was still work that had to be done.
Cause you know what folks doing a podcast is very demanding.
Um, and I've decided that I want to take two breaks per year.
I'm going to take a break in the summer and I'm going to take a break at the end of theyear.
And that's just going to be an ongoing thing.
So.
thus seasons.
The other thing that I wanna do, another reason that I'm doing seasons and just being alittle bit more thoughtful about my episodes this year.
(01:48):
All right, let's just say, this year, I was gonna say this season, but this year, causeit'll be two seasons this year, season two and season three.
Season three will be in the fall.
Season two will run through, I'm still sort of planning out the episodes, April or May,probably mid May.
But I want to work smarter.
(02:09):
So I'm sure you all heard me mention that I've launched a community at the end of lastyear.
It's a community for women of color who are in underrepresented fields.
I specifically focus on technology and business ownership, but I don't discriminate ifyou're a woman of color in an underrepresented field that maybe you're...
(02:36):
in another STEM field or something like that.
I'm not going to say, I'm sorry, you're not in tech or you're not in entrepreneurshipwhere you can't come to our community.
Those are just the entrepreneurship and technology just happened to be my skill set, butI'm open to having folks, women of color from other underrepresented fields join our
community.
That's a side.
(02:57):
That's not the point of what I was about to say.
What I wanted to say, I was talking about working smarter.
So...
I built the community and more about the building of the community in a minute when I talkabout one of my other topics, but I built a community and I built it sort of standalone
(03:17):
and launched it and was doing things in the community that were completely separate from alot of the other things that I was doing in the business.
because of that, and that includes the podcast, and because of that, I ended up doingdouble work.
So I was like,
trying to come up with content for the community, but then I was trying to come up withcontent for the podcast, and then I was trying to do all these other things.
(03:38):
And I was being pulled in lots of different directions.
I have a journal that is specific for the business and it's, you know, where write downideas or things that I'm working on.
And I think it was like, it was maybe January 1st or January 2nd that I specifically wrotedown, drew a little light bulb and wrote down bright ideas.
was like, hey, here's a thought.
(04:00):
What if you sync your because my community has monthly themes?
I was like, what if you sync your podcast episodes with the monthly themes in thecommunities and your episodes are about the theme?
So then you can use the content from the podcast for, know, for the community.
I mean, they're the content from the podcast is already represented in the community in away because the video versions of the of the episodes are available to community members.
(04:26):
But it just my point was
I was like, wait a minute, because I was trying to plan two different things.
I was trying to plan community content and I was trying to plan podcast content and Iwasn't meshing those together.
And that was just, that was not very smart.
And so I wanted to work smarter.
So was like, Hey, what if I mash up my community themes with my podcast episodes?
(04:47):
And I, you know, I specifically invite guests that represent, that are more aligned withthe community topics.
And I do that because booking guests and topics and all that is a whole other thing.
Like I said.
Podcasting is demanding.
By the way, I have had a request from a friend to do, I'm working on some online coursesand I have had a request to do a course about getting started with a podcast.
(05:12):
And I am planning to do that, but I've got some other courses ahead of it in the queue.
So that is coming soon.
Anyway, the point is working smarter, aligning my podcast topics with my community themeso that I am not doing double work in terms of content.
So again, this is all comes back to seasons and what I'm trying to do beginning withseason two.
(05:35):
And so let's just to give you an example of what I'm talking about and what I mean bythat.
Our theme in the community for January was choosing your destination.
So it was all about being focused on goal setting.
But I mean, yeah, there's your typical goal setting things like, let's do a vision boardand figure out where we see ourselves and things like that.
(05:56):
the typical type of goal setting, but in the community, what I try to do is I try to keepall of the tasks very small and manageable.
just in my opinion, the best communities are the way, cause I belong to several, but thebest communities are the ones where you can dip in and dip out easily.
(06:18):
You get that.
or whatever it is you need from that community and you go on with your day or you go onwith your life.
It's there for you on a regular basis, but you don't have to spend too much time in there.
Again, if you want to, that's great, but if you just need a quick hit, like we did thesefive-minute goal boosts in January.
(06:40):
So just something that's very simple.
So just to give an example.
So like I said, in January, we were doing these five-minute goal boosts.
There was one week and we have these Monday missions.
So every week, you know, you got the Monday mission.
And so one week it was, okay, just write one goal.
Take five minutes to write down one specific goal that you want to achieve in 2025.
(07:01):
Make it simple and actionable.
That's it.
That's it.
Just a simple five minute goal.
It was not all of your goals, not your five year plan, just five minutes to write down onegoal.
Just think about it, write it down, make sure it's simple and actionable.
And then the next week, I don't know if it was the next week or two weeks later, butsubsequent to that five minute goal boost, the next Monday mission or one of the next
(07:25):
Monday missions was find your why.
So either take that goal that you wrote down last week or pick a new goal, one of thegoals, just one of your goals for 2025 and spend five minutes reflecting on why that goal
matters to you.
Just write down one sentence about
how achieving that goal will impact your life or your career or your business.
(07:48):
Simple, five minute goal boost.
So the point I'm making, and we'll talk about like the February theme in just a second.
So the point is, had I been doing new episode, new podcast episodes in, actually, you knowwhat?
I feel like the episodes that I did re-release in January were aligned to that theme.
(08:12):
sort of unintentional because the episodes that I re-released in January were about theImperfect Genius mission.
so it was about my wife.
Why do I do the thing?
What was the goal of starting the Imperfect Genius podcast?
What was the goal of the Imperfect Genius brand?
(08:35):
And why did I decide to do it?
So actually, again, it was completely unintentional.
I'm not going to pretend like I was that smart.
I was just trying to take a break.
But actually the episodes that I released in January were aligned with that goal that, youknow, choosing my destination, setting those goals.
But my point was I was using that as an example to say, had I been doing new episodes inJanuary, then I would have specifically had a guest on who talked about goal setting or,
(09:03):
you know, we talked about, you know, setting goals and thinking they were focusing on goalsetting and things like that.
That is what I would have had the podcast episodes reflect.
And then I would have used some of that content in the community is my point.
So for example, for February, the theme is charting a course.
(09:23):
And what we're doing is all about planning where, we're going to develop detailed plans toachieve our goals because here's the important thing.
And I don't know who officially said this.
Like this is a famous quote.
I think it's been attributed to Ben Franklin, but I don't know how the internet is.
They'll tell you somebody said a thing and it's not their original person.
(09:44):
So I don't know if it really was Ben Franklin who first said this, but the infamous phraseis, if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail.
So you've got to plan.
you're, know, back to January, we chose our destination, we set our goals.
Now, how are you going to get there?
(10:04):
So now in February, we're gonna chart a course.
How are we gonna get from point A to point B or from point A to C, B, A, I can't even, I'monly in my alphabet today, y'all.
From point A to B, D, E.
Like how are you gonna get from A to E?
Like what's that path look like?
And we're gonna start it off this week by writing a letter to our future selves.
(10:25):
I wanted to look forward.
I wanted to have a check-in point and I wanted it to be about mid-year.
So we're writing a letter to our future selves.
for five months in the future.
And we're gonna, in that letter, we're gonna reflect on the milestones or goals that we'veachieved in the last five months.
We're gonna take a look at what worked, what didn't.
We're gonna figure out whether or not we need to do some course adjustments because thatis gonna be one of our themes in a subsequent month, which is, know, course adjustments
(10:55):
and things like that.
We're gonna talk about up-skilling and some other stuff as well.
Lots of great things coming in terms of
podcast content and community content.
But my point is that, so that's our theme for February.
Now, this episode is going to be released on February the 13th.
(11:17):
Oh, yes, it's going to be right before happy, I was about to say it, right before happyValentine's day, right before Valentine's day.
So happy Valentine's day, everybody.
So this, this episode is going to be released on the 13th.
my second, because we release every other week, my second episode in
February will be released on February the 27th.
And so I'll probably make that episode.
(11:38):
This one is just sort of a welcome to season two.
I'll probably make the next episode, the one that's released on the 27th to be specific toall about planning.
Because there's more to say than what I've just said.
One of the important things I will say, one of the reasons that I try to keep all of thecontent in the community to small bite-sized tasks,
(12:00):
is because the flip side of not planning is analysis paralysis.
And it's a thing that I struggle with often because I do have obsessive compulsivetendencies and I am a perfectionist, which are both problems for me in terms of planning.
tend to over-organize and over-plan and spend a lot of time organizing and planning andnot get to the thing that I was supposed to do.
(12:27):
To that end, I think I mentioned
at the end, one of the episodes at the end of 2024, I mentioned, it was the episode I didwith Corey McDowell.
And I mentioned that I was supposed to write three online courses in 2024.
And I wrote zero online courses in 2024, because I was busy doing other things.
For example, launching a community, which by the way was a goal on my list, but it was agoal that was on my list below writing the courses.
(12:53):
But I got so caught up in the planning and the organizing.
I took a masterclass on...
how to do community design.
it was, I fell in love with the idea of organizing and planning a community.
because that just, again, that spoke to my perfectionism, it spoke to my obsessivecompulsive tendencies.
And so I just got so wrapped up in that, that I didn't do the thing that I was supposed todo, which was to write the courses for the community.
(13:20):
Because the courses are for the people that are in my community, they're for my podcastaudience.
They're technical courses, they're tech courses, but.
It's for my audience.
And it was the thing that I was supposed to do ahead of the community building, but I gotso wrapped up in the community building that I didn't do that.
you know, there we'll talk about finding that right balance between not planning and overplanning.
(13:42):
so, again, I think that I'm going to make that be the target of my next episode, whichwill be released in two weeks.
so I'll I'm keeping this episode kind of short.
couple of things that I want to say.
Another thing that I'm trying to figure out in terms of pivot for how the podcast movesforward.
(14:03):
Another thing that I mentioned was that I originally planned that this podcast was goingto primarily be me answering tech questions or entrepreneurship questions.
And so that's why, you know, at the end of every episode, I put out the phone number andI'm like, call or text us or reach out to us on social media.
But I haven't been getting anybody who's been asking any questions.
(14:23):
Again, I can get people to ask me.
privately, but I've not gotten anybody to ask any questions for the podcast.
And so I'm trying to figure out, I still want Q &A to be a part of the podcast.
So I'm still trying to figure out the right way to do that.
Whether or not, I know there was a couple of Q &A episodes I did last year where I justlooked for questions that were being posted in, like on Reddit and other places like that
(14:49):
and just, answered anything that was related to.
being a woman of color, being an entrepreneur or a woman of color in tech and things likethat.
I don't know if that's the route that I wanna continue to go.
We'll see.
Maybe I'll solicit questions from my community that can be, where people's giving me thepermission to repeat their question on the podcast.
(15:11):
I'm still figuring that out.
I would love to hear your ideas.
I'll give you the phone number and ways to get in contact with me in just a bit.
Before I do that, would like to say that I would love to, if you are a woman of color inthe tech industry or in, you you own a business, I would love to have you join our
community.
(15:31):
If you're, you know, if you're for a woman of color in an underrepresented field who wantsto connect with other women of color in underrepresented fields for mentorship and
support, you can head over to community.imperfectgenius.com and look for ways that you canjoin the community.
Also, if you're not a woman of color and you want to support the Imperfect Geniuscommunity, you could also head over to community.imperfectgenius.com and you can join our
(15:59):
subscribe to our Travelogues plan, which is the plan that allows you to get access to allthe video versions of this podcast.
So that's a way that you can support our mission.
so the video episodes are available to everyone through the Travelogues plan.
So that's a way that you could support the Imperfect Genius mission.
even if you don't identify as a woman of color.
(16:20):
So again, I'd love for us to all rise together.
So, you know, join us over there.
But I will say, you know, stay tuned.
Thank you for listening.
Again, I would love to hear your ideas.
I would also love to hear your goals for 2025.
