Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, and welcome back to the Maths on new podcast
with me Joshua Fox, and today we're doing something a
little bit different now when it comes to Married at
First Sight and reality TV. Right, you know how we
all get fired up on socials and we're commenting, and
we're venting, and we're usually arguing amongst ourselves about who
we're loving, who are hating, what we're thinking. And that

(00:23):
level of passion doesn't just like captivate us regular viewers,
regular people, but it takes over some celebrities too. And
every season when Maths airs, I see one person in
pretty much every comment section on Socials, of every news
article about Married at First Sight, and that is Colin Fastenage.

(00:45):
And he may be best known for My Kitchen Rules
and his stint on I'm a Celebrity, but he is
every year one of the biggest critics of Maths, with
often hilarious takedowns and commentary of the people on there.
So for this week's episode of Confessions of a Reality Start,
Lachlan and Talia wanted to sit down with Colin and

(01:07):
see why does he get so invested and worked up?
Plus they got heaps of gossip and behind the scenes
stories about MKR. They spoke about the moment he was fired,
which I don't think Colin's ever done publicly before, and
they found out the celebrity he was actually brought in
to replace on I'm a celebri in the Jungle, and
they spoke about his feud with Osha of all people,

(01:29):
and yeah, there's quite a lot in this chat. And
if you love reality TV and pop culture here in Australia,
then you're gonna love this. Plus his Irish accent is
just a delight to listen to. So yeah, let's get
into it. Here is Colin Fastenage on this week's episode
of Confessions of a Reality Star.

Speaker 2 (01:47):
Colin Fascinations, thanks for joining us on Confessions of a
Reality Star.

Speaker 3 (01:51):
Thank you. I'll just working that out reality there.

Speaker 4 (01:55):
Do you have a lot to confess to us today?

Speaker 3 (01:57):
I'm my host, not one of those contestants. I think.

Speaker 2 (02:05):
You had a lot of reality TV experience. You kind
of entered the TV world twenty thirteen, I believe on
My Kitchen Rules and you were known as somewhat of
a bad guy back then.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Were you brought in to be like a kind of
harsh bad guy judge for those times do you think
or like, was there any kind of were They like,
we want you to have this perisode.

Speaker 3 (02:26):
There is a story behind this, so because that's what
we're here for, isn't it.

Speaker 4 (02:29):
And you want the goss, yeah, all the confessionals.

Speaker 3 (02:31):
It's an old story. So me and Money who didn't
get on, Like Twitter was a great tool for just
causing trouble and I was a king of trouble and
I think, I mean I fired some stuff for money.
It was all my end, it wasn't his in. But
then he just got annoying to me. So anyway, Ricky
Bruce hired me, I think just to upset the entire

(02:53):
Apple character that's her TV works. It's yeah and Money.
It was like he wanted less to work less time,
so me in to take over some of the the time.
And he said, who's who you're bringing in? They said
color fast. I hate that guy, and that guy hates me.
And then they're like we know. And the first season

(03:14):
I was being me, which is quite nice, but second
ep they were like you are. You're so bad You're
getting fired because I like, it's very hard to step
out of a kitchen and onto a TV set. It's not.
It's not what you think. It's a different job. You've
got to learn how to do it. And you get
a bit self conscious when you when you're not very

(03:35):
good and you've entire one hundred crew like just like
he's not very good, and then it gets in your head.
So second EP, I was getting fired, and then I
sort of put on this episode of like the hard chef,
like thought I was in the kitchen and they're like, oh, yeah,
that's great. So I'm like, I'm getting fired. So I
ran with it, and then after a while I was like,
I'm not that guy.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Okay, you're almost acting.

Speaker 3 (03:57):
I guess I was. I was putting that I would
always give contestants to two, you know what I mean.
Everyone else it's like it's amazing you get an eight,
and I'll be like two because that's my own brand.
And they knew I would do that.

Speaker 4 (04:10):
Today let him go last for those who might not know.
And I know, I think we've written about it before,
it like Yahoo probably, But what were you kind of
tweeting to Manure? Was it to him directly or were
you just trying to.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
Be dancing with stairs? And I bagged them out about
something And now and now I'm like dancing monkey. Anyway. Look,
I was chefs are like ego driven, like especially when
you're good, and we were both good and you were
at a certain level, so egos and you're young man,
this is a long time ago, Like it's over twenty
years ago, so we're old yous.

Speaker 4 (04:46):
Twitter as a platform, No, I.

Speaker 3 (04:47):
Got rid of it on Facebook. I was like, I
only use Facebook to talk to my mom and Twitter
was just it's just a cesspool of of hate. Like
Twitter is like it's bad, and I'm like, I don't
need this, like because sometimes I might buy into something
because I love to have a little lag you, and

(05:07):
then I'm like, if it's not there, I can't get
in trouble.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
There are quite a few MKR Facebook grooves. Clearly you're
not a part of them because you don't know Facebook.
But they love dissecting the show. Oh yeah, they love
talking about the drama as well. There's been some drama
off camera on camera in recent years. How would you
say MKR has evolved over the years though, because some
people say it's gotten too dramatic.

Speaker 3 (05:31):
Look, I thought last year was the best year ever.
The field was amazing. Simonia and Viviana and look, if
you put twelve people around the table, you give them wine.
It's like Christmas Day, five nights of the week, right,
So Christmas Day in your house when your family comes over,
the first half an hour you're all like yeah. Then

(05:51):
after an hour you're like, this guy is shitting me. Right,
my auntie is just I can't talk to her. So
that's what it is like. There is a bit of drama.
People want to see the drama, but we're lucky as
in we have food involved, so I don't care about
the drama. Right. You can all hate each other or
love each other, but we've got food at the end
of the day. That's what's going to get you through.

(06:11):
In a round, it's like the block, the drama and
the block, but you still got to build a house
and get to get you along. Unlike Maths, we just
turn up and do your lip gloss and then that's
the main story.

Speaker 4 (06:24):
We'll get into Maths soon.

Speaker 3 (06:25):
Actually we're right tired than any of us anyway. There
you go, Maybe I should just bring some.

Speaker 4 (06:30):
Lip gloss because Twitter might be gone for you, but
you're on Instagram and we've got a few questions down
the line. About that. But on my kitchen rules, speaking
of the drama, are you do you feel like you're
across it when contestants are arguing with each other about
the like the stories behind the scenes, or you kind
of have no idea and you just go to eat
and you just like shut up.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Oh no, Look you're you're You're there invested in that
evening for hours, man, so you can hear what's going on.
And if I was stop them every time something happened,
there wouldn't be much of a shot, right, you know
what I mean. Sometimes I just go for a walk literally,
like I'm going into the kitchen to see what's going on,
and so I'm going to read the paper or something

(07:12):
like you can like. But that's if I was to
interject every time, there would be no show, and if
it was just cooking, it would be as boring as
Master Chef. But so we've got that little twist in there.
I like everyone. All the judges now are mastership I like,
so best to look interesting.

Speaker 2 (07:32):
Now you're saying you like them, Yeah, what's your relationship
like with previous Master Chef judges.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
I get on with some and some dug their own hole.
That's you know it's.

Speaker 4 (07:43):
So.

Speaker 3 (07:45):
The thing is with being a TV host is the
grass is not always greener, put it that way. And
you're in a very lucky position to have a job
in TV now because the jobs in TV are sparse.
So if you think you're better than everyone and you leave,
there's no job yet, Like it's I look around some

(08:06):
days and go, we're very lucky to be doing what
we do, Like this is I get, like this has
worked for me, you know what I mean? You know
what I mean. You gotta realize don't let your ego
get in the way and.

Speaker 4 (08:17):
Think, yeah, it could all be over.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Like sometimes we were in studio today and I was like,
how cool is this? You know, like we do work
long hours, but I'm like, I'm fifty nearly fifty two,
so is Manu, and we're not standing in the kitchen
doing sixty hours a day. Yeah at fifty two, because
it's a young man's game, and we get all the
perks of people like you on TV. Well not everyone,
but anyway, But I don't take it. I don't. I

(08:42):
enjoy my job and I know I'm lucky to be
doing it so and I work hard at it. Whereas
I don't think I'm out anything, which a lot of
TV personalities think they're old are better than people, and
you're not.

Speaker 4 (08:55):
Do you watch shows like Master Chef or other reality
shows as kind of like educational experience for you as
to how you want to approach you next season other show?
Or do you like to keep that noise out?

Speaker 3 (09:07):
I watched no I watched motorbike races and programs about
fish because I keep fish. Now that's another story. I
watched mk R only I fast forward to my bits
just to see how I can do it better, Like,
because I've lived through it, I don't want to live
through it again. It's like PTSD, but I forward my

(09:29):
bits manual jokes. So you like you watch yourself, Well,
that's our job, man, Like, like I watched that was
a bit enough? You could have done that better? Or
do you know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (09:39):
Does anything sprint to mind, like a certain scene or
a moment that you kind of like, I wish I
handled that differently.

Speaker 3 (09:47):
I cried two years ago and I'd like it was
actually it was the day Jock diet, right, Oh, it
wasn't the day. It was the day after and we
had to film a me and man who were in
a little trailer and then I'm not saying I shouldn't
have done it likes, but I just I was like,

(10:07):
that wasn't planned. And we had two girls, rather proud
of two Indians who lost their dad, and they were
telling me the story about and I've got daughters, and
I was like, how hard, Like it's not nice feet
and they're only young, and Jock had died and me
and mine would been talking about. Then I just started crying.
And then the hard cruise like what And I was

(10:27):
like everyone was emotional because all the crew knew each other,
Like you say, I joke about mastership, but we're all
the same cruise and everyone gets on. And then I
watched that and I was like, that wasn't part of
the plan. Not that it's a bad thing, Yeah yeah.

Speaker 4 (10:42):
Yeah, I mean yeah, what else can you do in
that situation when but it.

Speaker 3 (10:45):
Wasn't about the jockting or anything. It was just a
whole thing of building open and their story just like,
oh my.

Speaker 4 (10:51):
God, for sure, And there's long filming. How is involved too? Right,
Like when you're kind of filming a season, you're probably awake.

Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah, thirty nows today? Is that legal?

Speaker 2 (11:05):
We get paid, all right, what are some of these
other behind the scenes secrets viewers might not know about
the food or what it is hot?

Speaker 3 (11:14):
It's always hot when you get it my masteriff.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
I was gonna say that's a good debunking because I
think a lot of people assume that it's not. Yeah, out.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
It's always hot. What else do we do if we
see people doing something wrong? We well, I always go
in and talk to about kitchens, like when we're in
the studio and I'd be like, oh, do you think
that's salty enough? They're like yeah, yeah, And I'm like,
that's your clue. Yeah, I always give a clue every time.
I always give a clue just because you know, thats

(11:47):
just enough salt in that. Yeah, yeah, loads, Okay, then
that's your cue to put salt in it. I think
it's are like we're we're on the same floor as
again testance now, so when we're having lunch, what we
talked to everyone, it's pretty it's not like a Deminos situation.

(12:07):
And there's a lot of joking and off camera stuff
that shouldn't be. Like we joke with contestants like they're like,
oh my god, it's my life we'll like shut up now,
they're good. It's you try and make it easier for
my link.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
You went on I'm a Celebrity in twenty twenty one,
which was during the hiatus of MKR. If we back
up a little bit though MKR you left in twenty
twenty the show wrapped for a couple of years. Was
there any story there?

Speaker 3 (12:39):
You notice the story that's why you asked me.

Speaker 4 (12:44):
It's definitely no off camera chart.

Speaker 2 (12:46):
No.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
I got forward. Well, I got asked not to come
back because I said something publicly about who I work for,
which was stupid, right, And if if I if it
was me, I would afford me because if you've had
if you have an argument with someone, just don't publicize it.
And I was out of order and I got hard

(13:09):
right and that was it. But it was a good
wagup call because you think you're teflon and then suddenly
you're not left back in the building. And that was
me being MOUTI on on some show thinking oh it's
not going and then it did come back to bite me,
and then I learned a valuable lesson. That's why it
works so much.

Speaker 4 (13:29):
Now, what was it like to get that call? If
it was a call or a meeting didn't make you
want to double down or were you starting away like funk,
I'm in the wrong here and I shouldn't have said that.

Speaker 3 (13:38):
Ah, I knew. I knew i'd done wrong. And I
got a phone call I was in the supermarket from
the boss boss, so I'm not going to say which boss.
You're not there anymoningwhere. And my wife goes, man, you're dead.
You know when you're a kid and you got in
trouble and you made so like you're dead. My wife goes,
you go dead. And I was like hello, and I

(13:58):
was like yeah, and he said, look, I know I'm dead.
So I said, look, mate, I'm a bit busy. I'm
gonna have to call you back because I'm in the
supermarket with my kids and I'll ring you when I
get home. And then I ran the bus and he said, oh,
what are you doing? I was shopping with my kids
and I said, oh, hang on, I'm just touching my assa.
What are you talking about? He said, just before you

(14:19):
chew it off and spit it out. And he's just like, mate,
you're fucking idiot. He's quite nice, but I understand, mate,
Like if I've had the four people who are idiots
and I was an idiot and I deserved it.

Speaker 2 (14:32):
How did you navigate that period? Then?

Speaker 3 (14:33):
After being with a show, it's very odd, as I said,
it's a good it's a good lesson to as I
said about people who are not hosts anymore, and you
think you're it's a good wake up call because you've
got bills to pay. I still had a restaurants though
I always had restaurants, so I worked through it up.

(14:54):
But you just, yeah, you lose a good paycheck.

Speaker 4 (14:57):
So from that moment, when did I'm a celeb approach
you to go on the show? There?

Speaker 3 (15:02):
They asked me about six months before because they sort
of research people they'd like on it. And my wife goes, no, man,
you can't do that, like your your drama. And I
always watched it with I always watched it with my
kids and said, I love to do that shell like
because my kids had snakes. We all in our house,
we've had snakes, turtles, lizards, and the only thing I

(15:25):
don't like his heights and we always said I'd love
to do that shell. My wife goes, you would do
as well? Wouldn't like it? Anyway turned down to Pete.
Evans was up for it, and Pete would have been
great on it, like Pete's a good friend of mine.
And then Pete got in trouble so he didn't get
on it and put they rang me back and so
the money they offered wasn't good. Like six months, I

(15:48):
didn't really talk about it. And then Pete was meant
to go in, so he did already start filming and
the usually bring the chef in day two or something,
and then they said, oh, can you come into the jungle?
And I was like, chit, cheane. And I was like
when they're like tomorrow and I'm like chean because they
had like they're on the back four. And then my
missus was like you can't and I said they're going

(16:09):
to pay us this. She's like, get in the car.
And we had to drive there because there was no plans.

Speaker 4 (16:14):
It was in colvit right of course.

Speaker 3 (16:16):
So we drove to set and I was sitting in
this house the night before at a boler read, I
was in chocolate. The next day I was in the jungle.

Speaker 4 (16:24):
So did you have to negotiate the salary?

Speaker 3 (16:26):
March?

Speaker 4 (16:26):
Was it pretty much what Pete was being offered.

Speaker 3 (16:28):
You're like, I didn't negotiate. I've got a manager. Yeah,
it was like they're in the plot spot.

Speaker 2 (16:36):
There have been some impressive salaries over the years.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Oh no, I was much a shame one.

Speaker 2 (16:40):
Okay, I was going to say. We had one of
contestants from season two, Larina Fleur, on the podcast and
she said she was paid was it seventy six thousand dollars?
I believe? And then Brendan Favola, the winner on that season,
was paid two hundred and fifty thousand dollars. I guess
we're in that four park. Are you sitting?

Speaker 3 (17:04):
No, Look, I actually don't like talking about money because,
like to see, like my first MK or I got
forty grand for the year. That's below me in one wage.
I reckon, but I was still learning. And then after that,
when I learned and when I see what everyone else
gets paid, I was like we need to have a chat. Yeah, absolutely,

(17:24):
But no, I don't like talking about money because it's
not a good time in Australia, Like people can't afford
eggs and stuff's a bit out of control.

Speaker 2 (17:32):
So yeah, can we ask do you know if you
and Manu are on the same salary.

Speaker 4 (17:39):
Next question, the money chat is shut down.

Speaker 2 (17:44):
It's a really great cast as well.

Speaker 3 (17:46):
Like everyone got on some years, I think they people
don't get on. Yeah, I think I had a fight
the petty floor or something because she's like, oh do
we have to have brought every night home like there's
nothing to eat? I'm actually gonna eat you.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
Is who have you stayed in contact with the most
since the show?

Speaker 3 (18:07):
Jesse, Eva, Grant, Dan You You always say like, oh,
we'll all we'll all hang out and then just life
just goes, you know what I mean?

Speaker 4 (18:17):
Well, is something like the logi is a reunion for
any of that kind of stuff then? Or is it
just too hard to mingle events like that?

Speaker 3 (18:26):
I know where you're going the Loggies is it's an
odd night, Like I think me and my new have
to go this year. We've been asked to go. It's
just it's a hard realm because there's a lot of
people watching, like who are wearing like a lot nicer
stuff than me, and who who are watching their p's
and q's and and just you know, don't want to

(18:47):
laugh or so it's a it's a weird night, but
it's great night. It's a great night for TV and
people deserve awards. But it's like the whole red carpet
thing sort of, it's a bit bewildering, a bit like
sometimes there's people who did they just die to get
on there, Usually Maths and I would be like just

(19:08):
walking through and they're like stop, stop, stop, you got
to wait here and you gotta do this guy and
then you got to go to the next go and
the next girl. And I'm like, man, I just want
to get inside.

Speaker 4 (19:15):
If the Maps people go get invited back this year,
I don't think they were last year, but if they were,
would you could you just like go great gate crash
or their red carpet interviews just as a joke.

Speaker 3 (19:25):
Just go up behind them and go flogs. That's my
word for them. Flogs. Here's the thing about Maths. Straight
down the camera at least an MK or you've got
you're driven to do cooking, or there is a vessel
to get you onto the next spot. If you do
the block vessel, you've got to build a house. That's
even harder to get onto the next spot. Master shift.

(19:46):
You've got to cook maps, You put on some lift gloss,
you drink pass and you argue career goal.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
I don't know if people fully know the extent of
you're trolling for these maps.

Speaker 3 (19:58):
No, it's not trolling.

Speaker 2 (20:01):
Let me read out some examples of your gentle prodding.
On one post about On one post about how much
money math stars are making after the show, you commented,
they get paid by the amount of personality they have.
Some may never get paid. Another post about Maths casting

(20:22):
new participants, you commented, Bunnings are having a flower pot
sale with the same personality if you're looking.

Speaker 3 (20:29):
That was an averaginal.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
And on a video of she was a participant a
couple of years ago, she said that she was looking
for a rich man and you commented, rich dot dot
dot and death.

Speaker 3 (20:44):
That was good.

Speaker 2 (20:45):
Do you secretly watch Maths?

Speaker 3 (20:47):
Nah, My daughters do, which really annoys me.

Speaker 4 (20:50):
But you do the little thing in the background where
you can see it on the screen, hear the drama,
and then they.

Speaker 3 (20:54):
Watch it downstairs. Because it's not My wife wouldn't have
that on our way. It's it's a cesspit of toxic.
That's what it is. It's like and people love it
like it writes really well, but it's so toxic, like
forget about all our other shows. It might be a
little bit of drama. It's just everything I hate about.

(21:15):
Like you've guys talking down to women, like treating them bad,
your women, trying for other women. It's like, that's not normal, mate, Like,
it's not normal, and young people shouldn't be that's not
They're trying their brain and thinking this is normal.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
Have you been in contact with any MATHS participants or
run into them?

Speaker 3 (21:36):
I wouldn't even know them. They've had their fifteen minutes
now they're on only fans never see them.

Speaker 4 (21:42):
Do you have conversations with your daughters about the show?
Like will they tell you about what's going on?

Speaker 3 (21:46):
Yeah, like they they get sucked, but it's a young
person's and course probably all people know. It's just I
just like, if that's if my daughter was to bring
home one of them guys, then well, well, like the
way they speak to the like there's no respect in
that show. That's what irks me. And if that's the

(22:07):
way the next gen looks upon relationships, we're in a
world of pain. Now. Don't be taking relationship advice from
me just saying that that's that has to be better.

Speaker 2 (22:18):
It's not just math stars that you've trolled on social media.
There was a video of Osha Ginsburg and you commented tour.

Speaker 3 (22:26):
Yeah, he pushed me all the way at the logis. Yeah,
he's very rude. You can say sorry next time.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
Maybe this year.

Speaker 3 (22:33):
Yeah, I was doing I was doing an interview and
he pushed me away and I was like, oh, okay
to have.

Speaker 4 (22:39):
His turn, or was just trying to get past and
get out of there.

Speaker 3 (22:41):
No, I think he was going to an interview, but
he just could have done a bit nicer. Now, don't
be starting a feud with me and him because it
was just, you know, he just maybe bumped into me.
I forgive him.

Speaker 2 (22:54):
Do you have any beef with any other celebrities in
the Australian industry?

Speaker 3 (22:59):
Nah, I've I've beefed and I've done only beef and
now mold.

Speaker 4 (23:06):
What can fans expect from the upcoming season of.

Speaker 2 (23:09):
M k R.

Speaker 3 (23:10):
There's a lot of personality, not just him and me.
Just so that some great cooking. Well we're not finished,
we're still in the middle of it. But it's apparently
it's the best episode one they've ever seen. Wo, So
that's good. Bodes well for next year.

Speaker 4 (23:28):
Yeah, that's a good teaser.

Speaker 2 (23:29):
Yeah, you've been busy filming some other projects as well.

Speaker 3 (23:32):
What can you share right now, let's start selling some shells.
So we were filming we do My Kitchen Rules in
New Zealand, which is another version, different company, and we've
seen this caravan like it was battered, and we're like,
so sim and the producer, We're like, we should do
this show, blah blah blah, and he's like, yeah, let's
do it. So he went to TV and said they

(23:53):
got all the cash together. No TVNZ didn't get it,
Simon got it, uh, And then they sold the TV
and said, but anyway, it's all me and man who
became like like small percentage producers on the show. And
it's him and me in a caravan on North and
South Island of New Zealand, and it's just us being us,

(24:14):
which is like happy what I said, you know, he
starts off well happy in the morning and by night
thought and then like we were, there was a whole
day of arguing about how to eat a pie, and
then we'd have like competitions of it was shooting where
I split my head, and then we had like fishing competitions.

(24:35):
And when you'd lose, you'd have to do like Nudi
runs and all this stuff. And I had to wash
a car like in these tidest like shorts Togever and
washed and he spread the car with muck and I
had to wash the car and the caravan and the
whole crew films that. So every day was like, just help,
can we just annoy each other? That's off the grid,
So that's coming soon. What else do we do? Better

(24:58):
homes and gardens? That's very different.

Speaker 4 (25:00):
Colin any arguments on that show.

Speaker 3 (25:03):
No, that's that's a There are everyone's friends in that show.
It's great to go on that one because everyone's friends,
everyone gets on all the the producers are nice and
just as nice. And then what's the other one? We did?
Oh yeah, start of my own media company called food
Dories with Rob Rowart and James White, and it's called

(25:24):
food Dories and we we paid for ourselves well with
a few other people. We did Mongolia, Cambodia and Japan.
But that's not for half seven.

Speaker 4 (25:36):
Viewing that way, So we're.

Speaker 3 (25:39):
Talking to streamers at the minute. If we sell it, great,
we're in the money. If we don't, we've got a
very expensive holiday video.

Speaker 4 (25:47):
Fingers crossed sounds amazing.

Speaker 2 (25:49):

new season of m k R. But I appreciate you

Portal in the way, brought the caravan.

season two, so we're going back. We just we got
signed for season two for Off the Grid soon right there.
