Don’t miss this in-depth conversation with John Love, TCS, TRS and John Liberatore, Founder & President of Primacy Risk Services,

The latest episode of Claims Corner is one you don’t want to miss! Moderator John Love, TCS, TRS sits down with John Liberatore, Founder & President of Primacy Risk Services & Chair of the MCIEF Claims Curriculum Committee, to discuss the intricate world of trucking claims, the development of the Transportation Claims Specialist (TCS) curriculum, and the importance of efficiency and speed in claims handling. This conversation offers valuable insights into the unique challenges of the trucking insurance industry and why the claims process is anything but ordinary.

Why Trucking Claims Matter More Than Ever

Trucking claims are vastly different from general insurance claims. Unlike standard auto accidents or property damage cases, trucking claims involve a complex mix of liability, regulations, and risk factors unique to the transportation industry. As Liberatore explains, handling claims efficiently is not just about paying out settlements—it's about preventing losses, identifying fraud, and ensuring fairness for all parties involved.

One of the biggest takeaways from the discussion is how crucial speed is when processing trucking claims. From the moment an accident occurs, insurers and claims professionals need to gather evidence, interview drivers, and assess damages as quickly as possible. Delays can lead to missed details, fraudulent claims, and increased costs for all stakeholders.

Behind the Scenes of Trucking Claims—What Really Happens?

John Liberatore shares some eye-opening stories from his decades of experience in the field. His firm, Promise Risk Services, has handled claims for large motor carriers with thousands of trucks on the road. With that level of responsibility, no two claims are ever the same.

One particularly bizarre example involved a property damage claim where no one was inside the damaged vehicle at the time of the accident—yet the vehicle owner still attempted to file an injury claim on behalf of the driver. This kind of fraudulent or exaggerated claim isn’t uncommon in the trucking industry, making thorough investigations and proper documentation essential.

“Just when you think you’ve seen it all, a new case will come along that surprises you,” Liberatore explains.

The Power of Quick Action & Strong Communication

A recurring theme in this episode is the importance of speed and communication in claims handling. According to Liberatore, claims should be closed within 2 to 4 weeks if handled properly. However, a lack of organization and poor coordination between claims and underwriting teams can lead to longer resolution times, unnecessary litigation, and increased insurance costs.

So, what’s the solution?

  • Faster reporting – Getting claims into the system immediately leads to better outcomes.
  • Better driver training – Truck drivers need to be taught to gather essential details at the scene, such as phone numbers and license plates, to avoid missing critical information.
  • Stronger collaboration – Claims and underwriting departments must work together to prevent risks from going unnoticed and ensure that policies accurately reflect a fleet’s operations.

What Can the Industry Do to Improve?

Liberatore suggests that the trucking insurance industry must prioritize training, process improvements, and stronger fraud detection to improve claims outcomes. This is exactly why MCIEF created the Transportation Claims Specialist (TCS) designatio
