our first special guest intro.
We're going to introduce each special guest. We're going to talk a little bit
from their bio. We got two new guests on the podcast. First special guest.
Melanie Furnitz, you've got an incredible guest with us today.
(01:57):
Melanie is delighted to have made her debut at the Pioneer Theater Company.
Wait, so this is the AI wrote this.
All right. So, yeah, so we're just going to toss the mic to Melanie.
Melanie, what's up? Can you say a little bit about yourself and maybe a little
bit about your theater and performer background?
(02:17):
Hi. Hi. Hi, I'm Melanie.
I am so excited to be here. This is an Ethel Merman podcast,
right? That's correct. What about Ethel Merman? Mad Monday.
Old joke, old joke, old joke.
I am here to sing with the Little Merman.
(02:38):
And I was told about this band by Melinda, who was my college roommate.
And yeah, I'm just so excited. This is the first time we've really sung together
since our college days, right?
Yeah. Yeah, singing together. We did a little reading of the Little Legally
Blonde. The Little Legally Blonde.
And yeah, so this is our first time like singing in harmony together.
(03:02):
And I'm just so excited to be here in Iowa.
Yeah, fantastic. That's right. We got to mention that we're recording this podcast
from Iowa's largest and greatest theme park called Adventureland.
It's an adventure for sure. Second time here.
Second time for the beer. because we're playing Oktoberfest. Woo! That's right.
(03:23):
We're doing a special Oktoberfest. We're going to introduce our next brand new
special guest, a new keys player to the band for the special gig this weekend.
So, all right, we're going to roll out the red carpet and introduce Michael Ferrara.
Yeah! All right. I like to, I play a lot of different genres of music.
(03:44):
I like to conduct. I play keys.
Used to be a brass player. so there's that what's your sign oh you score nice
yeah I'm like wow you know but I'm,
Yeah, I'm so excited to be in Iowa. Yay! Yay! Yay! Yay!
(04:06):
Yay! Korn. Korn. Korn. Korn. Korn. This is the Korn.
Yeah, we're talking about Korn. Korn and Ethel Mermaid. All right.
Segment number one. Segment number one. We put a lot of planning and thought
into this and definitely didn't just write a script just now in the past five minutes.
Segment number one, favorite Disney villains. Let's jump into it.
(04:28):
Disney villains are some of the most iconic characters in movie history.
They bring tension, drama, and sometimes, let's face it, they just steal the show.
So I want to know, who is your favorite Disney villain and why?
Quinn, you're up first. My all-time favorite villain has to be Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.
(04:49):
She's got this dark, mystical energy that makes her both elegant and terrifying at the same time.
Plus, turning into a dragon.
All right now you're next you're next not gonna lie though favorite of all time
my favorite all time but i say like in my top five for sure is jafar because first off,
(05:10):
real dramatic queen obviously the eyeliner
for days i get it i'm in it i'm in it yeah like
it's he's the best and he's just like a screaming queen i don't know really
i like i like his vibe i feel like he would be really good on like the cabaret
circuit all right michael you're next who is your favorite disney villain okay
(05:33):
this is maybe slightly obscure but i'm gonna say he is.
He's like hey what's going on you know i was i also like y'all song because
yeah honky he's hot hot dog all right melinda who's your favorite disney villain
okay my My favorite Disney villain is Yzma from Ever's World. Ooh, that.
(05:55):
She gets lost. Ooh, that. She gets lost.
And then she's a hack. Yeah. Wrong. Why? I'm kidding.
Are you kidding? I watched that movie kind of more recently,
and I was like, man, this movie still hits. John Goodman?
It's so good without any, like, songs.
Yeah. Should I tell my- Yes. Yes, please, Melanie. Yeah.
(06:18):
I'm going to have to say Ursula. Because, okay, I played Ariel,
the little mermaid, and even though I was supposed to be against her,
in my mind, I'm like, Ariel broke a contract.
She laid out the rules. Ursula was like, this is what it is gonna be.
Later on, I was like, no. But it's like, you literally signed a name.
(06:38):
But Sally. Daddy, I love him. I love him.
She understands the importance of body language. Ariel is a baby.
You got to get out of the body language. There you go.
Oh, I'm hot sure nuts. So...
Leave it in. Leave it in.
(07:00):
I like that in the body language, that's when it's like floor time.
Because that's what, like, you know, a pretty lady in a cartoon does.
It's saxophones. Like, if you ever watch...
Yeah, it's always saxophones for Jessica Rabbit. You guys went really heavy,
but I'm going to lighten it up with Captain Hook.
That's my favorite Disney movie. Ooh. That's how they're streaming.
(07:23):
There's something bumbling yet dangerous about him.
How about lightening it up, though, if he's dangerous? because he's
you know well he's obviously he's a bad boy but he's you know
he's like bumbling around and you know getting into his like 3d
hijinks and kind of you know and i like how they played him
in in the movie hook when he was like he was when he was when he was dustin
(07:44):
hoffman when he was dustin hoffman but what about because we're walking as captain
hook in the live action musical actually there's been a lot of captain hook
We're not Glenn Close or Don't Go Pirates. That's right. Oh.
That's great. I played Peter Pan in middle school. That's amazing.
And like, it was, I was, when you're in middle school, everything's embarrassing.
(08:08):
And I not like the short hair.
My mom made me take a photo shoot. And like, there's a four foot tall picture
of me as Peter Pan with a sword.
Amazing. Melanie, you've hands down been friends with the most Disney characters.
Oh, I have been friends with a few, yes.
Who's the coolest wait but can you
(08:28):
can you say like what that means because these guys probably don't
know what friends with disney characters so let's can
we let people in on the secret so friends with disney
characters so i i worked for disney cruise line for seven years consecutively
seven christmases on a boat and they're about nine month contracts and uh yeah
when you're for the disney company if you're portraying a princess to say i'm
(08:51):
friends with so i was friends Friends with Jasmine in the show Aladdin,
the musical spectacular,
which is the same version from the Hyperion.
And then I also got to feature as Mulan, Friends with Mulan in one number of Singing Reflection.
And then Colors of the Wind, I got to do Pocahontas number, where I spoke to
Grandmother Willow and danced along. Very fun.
(09:14):
So yeah, I worked for Daisy Cruse Line and got to do a couple of fun stuff.
Did I do anything else? Well, not Ariel and Corbin, but the show.
That's a cool one. So, okay, so one thing I was just thinking about,
Melanie, when you were talking about the Hawaiian Roller Coaster Ride,
is that that song's kind of been on our list for a couple of times.
We've been doing this show, like touring on it. I mean, we've been a band for.
(09:35):
Like 10 years, but we've been touring for the past eight years.
And I think once a year, someone's like, you got to put that song on the show.
And I've always thought we could find like maybe a surf rock version of that
song, since it's like surf song.
I think you only just play around with it. And then the Stitch movie is coming out next year.
We all watched that short little trailer. Well, then it would be a really good
time to get that one under the belt, no?
But unless they take the Mulan route and take all the songs out.
(09:59):
But then, like, when you book our first Hawaii show and we don't play it. That's right.
Remember CGI Stitch? Have you seen CGI Stitch? No, I was thinking of Mulan. Right?
Because, like, because they did do, like, traditional Chinese versions of,
like, reflection just kind of in the background.
And I felt it was, like, it was a good movie.
And I love the legend of Mulan. But like, I hope that they don't do that with the Lillian Stitch.
(10:22):
The acting was great. It was just like, it was like, like Crouching Tiger,
Hidden Dragon. Yeah, it was very cool choreographed fight.
Yeah, it was like, pretty dark, but like, it's still it. It was like, I watched in the plane.
It was good in a dark, like, very dramatic styling, like that sense. Like, I'd be way into it.
They had the score and they're like in the girl we're fighting for yep they
(10:44):
had that they had that line yeah and then they did.
And then you know it was like let's get down to business
but they didn't sing it you just heard that in the soundtrack during the training
yeah like the best line in all of any Disney movie as far as I'm concerned is
just like the cricket lies to Mooshu after the avalanche he's like you lied
it looks like the horse who he hates he goes what are you a sheep so one thing
(11:07):
you're a big Mulan guy I just love that movie.
This is like, that was campaign for a girl we're fighting for, for years.
Because I also do a really good Harvey Fires thing, so that's why.
We're talking about putting, maybe putting it back in for Halloween.
We did it. It helped steal the status in that rehearsal.
Shout out. Halloween show, October 24th, cutting room.
You'll be sure to harp on that. That's a Halloween show.
(11:31):
And I still haven't decided what surprise costume I'm going to be.
Yeah. Ooh, surprise costumes around.
That's right. You heard it here first on the podcast, folks.
The Little Merman, the nation's number one ultimate Disney tribute band,
is throwing a Halloween ball,
a very spooky, mystical, magical costume party at New York City's Cutting Room.
(11:53):
That's Thursday, October 24th. So get your tickets fast.
But now back to the podcast where we asked everybody if Marvel counts as Disney,
do we consider Marvel characters Disney characters let's see what everybody
else had to say yeah Marvel like that's interesting like do you guys consider like.
(12:17):
Because I think Spider-Man kind of is a Disney character now.
Well, he is. I mean, I think. Or would you say, like, maybe that's not. I'm trying to find. No.
But when we play our shows as The Little Mermaid, there's often a Spider-Man
boy in the audience. There's also a lot of Batmans. Just the fact that. At our shows? Yeah.
Well, the newest, like, Spider-Man Homecoming and stuff like that,
that's all at Disney. That's all, yeah. And he's at the parks.
(12:40):
I guess for me, it's like, if you can meet that Marvel character as Disney
at Disney World like the Tom Hiddleston guy
Loki you can meet yeah yeah but like if
Morbius showed up I would just leave Spider-Man was there like he Gamora ah
it's the galaxy yeah so yeah yeah he's been here he's be the Tower of Terror. Yeah.
(13:09):
It used to be Tower of Terror, it's the same type of structure.
And it's fun because this is Bradley Cooper being Rocky's like.
It's a really good documentary that I was watching recently when they're talking
about the there was an original a first mask that the Green Goblin was supposed to wear.
(13:30):
Oh, yeah, that was like morphed to his face really that had
like these orange eyes and whatever and like
i was going to be willing to frame me and yeah but
brainy thought that the mask was too scary for like a
younger audience oh wow i went with this like
kind of more just like simple yeah yeah move mask oh wow that's crazy but the
(13:51):
first one look raising like it looks very much like like what it would in the
comic book yeah you know what i mean where it's like these giant orange eyes
that's best disney villain green goblin like Like maybe a recent Torvay and Shanann.
Torvay. We'll do a Torvay and Shanann. Funny bits and silly Shanann.
Music.
(14:24):
Did you want to explain what a tour van shenan is, Quint? So a tour van shenan
is, I think you guys both experienced a tour van shenan when we got into our band today.
Was that Alexis took over the aux cord.
Get brain breakers. And he did some brain breakers, which are the mashups between
songs that you would never expect to be mashed up. So that's a tour van shenan.
(14:52):
Mashups between songs that you would never expect to be mashed up We'll be right back.
Music.
Let's do one more quick one we'll do a quick round robin everyone goes around
(15:14):
it says their favorite favorite villain song I'll start.
I'll start. I'm going to start at a controversial pick. I'm going to go Froyo
Hellfire from Hunchback. Nice.
Froyo? Favorite villain song?
Yeah, I think it's probably got to be the Boogeyman song, dude.
Oh, me too. I love the Boogeyman song.
(15:36):
I like Scars. Be prepared because you should always be prepared. And be prepared, man.
It's good advice. Drama. It is good advice. I would say, I really like Friends on the other side.
I've got friends on the other side. Okay, Melinda, what's your favorite Disney villain song?
(15:56):
I don't know if this counts. She's not really a full villain.
She's just sort of a bitch, but Georgette's song from Oliver and Company.
She's the sassy poodle that sings that song. That's a good one. Oh, perfect isn't easy.
Yeah, you know what? That's a good one.
No maybe we reposted that but now it's almost making me think of like I love
(16:20):
Cruella de Vil do you want to change yours?
No I don't want to change it but I'd love to add a second that like Cruella
doesn't sing it though it is a jam Cruella de Vil I would say qualifies as a
villain song even though you're right it's a foul song,
it's not Agatha all along is a villain song but like she doesn't sing like the
narrators they're just telling you it was Agatha oh,
that show's coming out have you seen that?
(16:42):
Aubrey Plaza's on very excited what? Alright, and our last and our last and
final Disney villain pick of the night goes to G-Man, guys.
What's it going to be? Drumroll, drumroll. It's the Imperial March from Star Wars. Oh, come on.
Does that count as a villain song, though? Yeah, that's right.
Yeah, that's the original Disney villain.
(17:06):
He's like a step villain. Wrong.
Okay, fine. I will, the The Black Pearl theme in Rise of the Caribbean.
Dum, dum, dum, dum, dum, dum. Oh, whoa. Okay.
Try again.
Wrong. It's Kill the Beast. All right. Everybody okay?
(17:31):
You're a big fan of these group songs.
What does your Disney song end and then Oh,
that's To be fair, two people stole my song, so I had to go with another one.
Might be fair, because I'm always forgetting stuff. Melinda was in an actual Disney villain video.
(17:55):
Nice. I saw that. You were on that Disney blog that we were on. Yeah. I remember this.
It's a parody of Counting Stars by OneRepublic, and it was counting scars.
The lyrics make zero sense. Wait, it was so good.
It was well done. it was a really well done video but it's all about how Scar
is like the ultimate villain,
anyway that's my take though that was cool yeah and that was like before like
(18:18):
I met you and I was like looking at your stuff and being like oh wow yeah who's that green girl?
You're me um alright well guys this has been a great episode and I was gonna,
