Following the Supreme Court’s 2022 ruling in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, which found there isn't a constitutional right to abortion, pro-life organizations and individuals believed a culture of life was building in the United States. However, several losses on the state level have led to confusion and demoralization among many in the pro-life movement. In this episode of Archbishop George J. Lucas' video podcast, Missional Catholics, the archbishop talks with moral theologian Charlie Camosy, Ph.D., about building a culture of life in a post-Roe world. Camosy has spent most of his adult life in the pro-life arena. He is currently a professor at the Creighton University School of Medicine and the Msgr. Curran Fellow in Moral Theology at St. Joseph Seminary in New York. Camosy believes that one important way the pro-life movement in America will gain ground and change hearts and minds is by positioning itself as a justice-centered movement that includes prenatal justice. Essential to this movement is to inform society that intimate partner violence is a significant factor when it comes to women seeking abortions. In fact, seven out of 10 abortions are coerced, and homicide is the most common cause of death in pregnant women. Dr. Camosy wants people to be bold and creative in fighting the culture of death while also working to get women out of toxic situations that make them feel that abortion is the only way out. People who want women to be protected and receive quality health care – even if they are pro-choice – have shown a willingness to partner with those in the pro-life movement on this issue. That is a start. Finally, as in all types of evangelization, Dr. Camosy suggests spending time in front of the Blessed Sacrament and praying that we can be compassionate and accompany the most vulnerable in our society so they know they are not alone.
