U interesu pravednosti prema svim generacijama, tema smanjenja dobne granice za glasanje na izborima za Europski parlament već neko vrijeme u fokusu je javnosti i stručnjaka. Nedavno održani europski izbori nisu rezultirali nikakvim promjenama na europskoj razini. Međutim, postoji mogućnost promjena u budućnosti koje bi mogle utjecati na druge nacionalne političke izbore.
Trenutačno, zakoni koji reguliraju europske izbore različiti su diljem kontinenta. U većini zemalja Europske unije, građani imaju pravo glasati od 18. godine. U Njemačkoj, Belgiji, Austriji i Malti dobna granica za izbor zastupnika u Europskom parlamentu sada je 16 godina, dok u Grčkoj mladi mogu glasati od 17 godina.
Zbog toga Europski parlament poziva na reformu izbornog sustava Europske unije, koja bi primjenjivala ista pravila na sve države članice.
