Welcome to misbehaving This is a podcast we'regoing to hang out and talk about life with
multiple sclerosis because Shock horror My friendEmily I actually have multiple sclerosis No
Yes I do too What's the the school for thispodcast I I'm finding ways to
keep it together mostly And I am a comedian soI'm just trying to find ways to laugh about it

(00:25):
together We're here to share stories insights anda healthy dose of sarcasm about what it's really
like to misbehave So whether you have emails likewe do whether you love someone they may like us
or whether you've just stumbled upon this somehowWelcome We're going to have a good time This is
misbehaving because life with Emmys doesn'talways play by the rules and neither do we Apart

(00:50):
from what like games and stuff we always play bythe rules because otherwise it ruins the game
Depends on the game That's an interesting pointMaybe we'll cover that in a later episode Strip
poker Do you play by the rules and strip poker NoYou got to cheat man You want to get everyone
else naked It's an interesting I don't think I'veever played strip poker You don't get out much

(01:11):
do you No Welcome to the Misbehaving Podcast
with your hosts Sam Smith and Emily Howard Getready It's
time to start misbehaving

(01:33):
Welcome to misbehaving everyone My name is SamSmith I am a comedian and I have multiple
sclerosis It sounds like I'm doing like Like it'san AA meeting This isn't a AA Not yet Anyway this
is Amos This is a mess Yeah AA is an auto immunesomething Other disease It's also the
Automobile Association Oh yes but you randomvoice who I'm listening to What is your name Hi

(01:55):
I'm so glad to be here I'm Emily I too have mystunt on done and
I'm really excited to be here today It's veryexciting This is our first episode of the podcast
We are hanging out We guys what we're going to dowe're going to hang out and talk about just life
Really I get life But also why are we here Whyare we You just called me over and said come over

(02:19):
we'll make a plan I did I don't even really knowyou yet I'm like Let's do a podcast But you know
what we have in common We're both American womennow People hear No no try
again We're both white New Zealand men with bushybeard No
no no try again I said the image thing is thatYeah it's the most thing Yeah Look look guys Yeah

(02:44):
we definitely have up And the reason we're herewe're actually here in Auckland
right now Auckland New Zealand And both of us metin our local community
Multiple Sclerosis Society right We did I think Iwas about what four or five months ago Yeah Well

(03:04):
yeah yeah well yeah yeah I feel like I met youlike a year ago Oh I don't know if that's good or
bad Maybe I just saw you because as I mentionedyou do have people here So yeah there's a low
vision I have low vision My images fix myeyesight Yes And you are a wonderful person to
have around Emily I'm a beacon You are a beaconThat's the way I'm a beacon You are so easy to

(03:27):
see and follow around a room And also it helpsthat you are allowed American as well Oh and five
foot ten that tried all of those things But I'msix foot so you're still short to me Well I'll
I'll get there someday I'll get there someday Butwhat we've realized there's just even in those
little times that we've made before is that Ilike hanging out with you Oh yeah Didn't return

(03:48):
the compliment That's cool But the You wouldn'tlet me get a word in edgewise after Adam
But what we realize is that we kind of deal withour enemies in the same sort of way It's by
laughing about it pointing out those things thatare quite interesting that we find And we thought
they were probably some other people out therewho probably do as well Yeah I think that really

(04:11):
what it comes down to is I when I met you Sam youhave the most positive
attitude No I don't Don't don't tell me I'm wrongYou know you've got such a positive
attitude You are so alive so vibrant And you knowI feel that way

(04:31):
too And this This disease doesn't define me Yeahand I know it's hard
but But we need to lift people up I need to belifted up You need to be lifted up How do we
create a space where we're not just in this roomWe have an entire world and a
family of of people with the same stories that wehave Isn't it Isn't that crazy Like as soon as

(04:58):
you meet someone else with a he makes you almostyou always immediately feel connected to them So
you just suddenly in this gang Yes absolutely Andeven even though our stories and our
illness is different or medications are differentand how we how we show our
illness you know what's the same is the journeyto get here How did we become

(05:22):
this All of us had to wait months and months andmonths and months and months Right And then the
processing time of going what does this mean Whatdid it mean through the last 20 years of my life
Like there's just so much that And to come outthe other side it's not always easy And I
just want to be that light that beacon Yeah Thathelps people

(05:48):
navigate the tests It's um Yeah it's It reallywasn't until I started talking about other people
with me once I was diagnosed and I was diagnosedin 2015 So I'm almost a year almost a decade in
now Wow And thank you so much for being impressedAnd you're still smiling That's great

(06:08):
Yeah The yeah it wasn't until I started talkingto other people with it that I realized that
Everyone everyone deals with differently But Ithink the commonality I found is that most people
were just upbeat and cool with it The kind ofrealized Oh yeah this is a thing This is a string
to my bow which is not how people feel at thebeginning No And as soon as people realize that

(06:30):
there are other people that have dealt with itare dealing with it and people who will deal with
it in the future knowing that there are otherpeople out there who have done it have been there
before and are there at the same time is so socool And so that's kind of what I want to do with
someone to I want to be there If people want toget in contact with me please do Yeah yeah yeah

(06:51):
I'm Sam Smith Comedy on all the things and yeahI've spoken to lots of people before about it and
and selfishly that helps me talking about it toother people and introduce them to the image
world helps me deal with Miami So it helps mesort of see it in and in a nice light It's like
I've got two children and as soon as I saw otherpeople struggling with their children I was like

(07:16):
Oh yeah my kids have grown up and I don't have todeal with shitty little toddlers anymore Oh isn't
that great It was the greatest moment Do you knowwhat it's like for me I have a 25 year old COVID
Everyone was like I don't know what to do with myten year olds I'm like I don't care Not my
problem Judge me for having kids when I was youngWhatever I got this figured

(07:39):
out You guys handle that You just leave him inHis ruble just plays computer game You have to
Yeah Home educate your children Screw that I gotthat one done and dusted How good was COVID I
loved it Oh man COVID was awesome Wait a secondYou were diagnosed after COVID weren't you I was
So I was diagnosed in 2022 very early So I'm I'malmost coming up on

(08:05):
three years Yeah cool But yeah no mine was beforewas was after COVID And
but that moment of when you get the diagnosis itfelt like I had to go back in the annals of
my memory to go what When did I actually startwith it You know it was like every bump

(08:25):
bruise scrape any illness I ever had That wasjust strange I was like was that it Was that the
time there's so much science out there about itand where it all comes from and I'm Epstein-Barr
is apparently the Epstein-Barr virus is the thingIt's the thing I had glandular fever when I was
at high school Apparently I had mono at somepoint in my life I don't know when I say that's

(08:47):
the kissing disease I know you mentioned somepeople are I don't know must have been smooching
some but well I have smooched peeps murderer acouple leave it I can't believe this is being
recorded I know I know I have smooched peeps butI don't know I don't know when
Yeah right It escapes me So one of the thingsthat we're going to do with this podcast is we're

(09:13):
going to talk about those all those things aboutemails that we like to chat about We don't know
everything we're going to find out things aboutabout it as well by Twitter and it changes daily
Exactly right And we're going to talk about twopeople who know more than us We're going to talk
to people who know less than us We're just goingto everything about them is interest us We're
going to talk about it We are But it's not goingto just be about me Oh no There's there's some

(09:36):
life here you know because that's not how I livemy everyday life I don't talk about me every
moment of every day Yeah And so I think we needto just you know rise above sometimes have a
little bit of fun but reach out and just rememberthe good positive things in life and
be joyful One of the greatest things thathappened to me when I got in is is that I'm on a

(10:00):
disability park We can park and disabled carparks which is I don't think that counts for
everyone It does if you have it makes youeligible to get a disabled car park When I got it
cost $50 you can park for twice as long And anycar park can you disabled car park or any normal

(10:20):
car park for twice as long as what I should havesaid before Got it And and it's really great and
I think anyone with any qualifies for it I alsogot it the same day that I lost my vision and
wasn't allowed to drive So that was quite funnyBut the that's a double edged sword Yeah it was
But it's it's funny Take take this extra parkingBut you can I've got some good news and some bad

(10:45):
news Yeah What's the good news You get thedisabled car park Great What's the bad news
You're not allowed to drive anymore I still I gotto I got a fact check This one Yeah because
my M.S was optic neuritis for about three weeksHow would that qualify me
as an immense person You get fatigued You can'tpark in car parks that are far away from the shop

(11:10):
that you're going for You Really Yeah You need tobe able to Go and get your groceries and not have
to take them too long if you're feeling wellThat's why I order them for delivery Yeah Oh
that's very clever Yeah yeah Oh Oh yeah I forgotit So it's 2005 We can order our soup That's
right That's right that's right Oh okay So youknow look I'm going to go fact check you on that

(11:32):
I'll come back on that and let's maybe I'll gothrough the process and we can explain it to our
listeners Would be wonderful Should we try thatThat's definitely does Oh and that's the thing as
well We want to answer people's questions as wellYes If you have any questions send them in to us
You can contact us through our Instagram pagewhich is misbehaving dot show right Yeah How do

(11:54):
we get misbehaving Don't show That's great Wellmisbehaving that show is our website and we have
a website too What I know this is a legit pull tolook at you in that comfy chair with a
nice microphone What have you done now Sorry Whatvalue are

(12:14):
you adding here Well me Yeah You just show uprock up with some sunglasses sit down and you're
like podcast go I think I bring do I bring I takethis
do I bring a little bit of star power I think soI was on season one of the traitors in New
Zealand And if you know I don't I don't know Youdon't want to really have a reality TV show It's

(12:39):
it's one of the biggest TV franchises in theworld at the moment That's all good You don't
need to know Really Yeah I was on it Yeah Whatdid you do I was a contestant on it Did
you win Yeah I did actually Fuck off I won't Iwill Fuck on
Yeah it was one A reality show I want a realityTV show Isn't that crazy And The Traitors is a

(13:03):
show that isn't like when we showed up they saidnow this is the the show for all those hot young
people And we were Oh okay Thanks man That'sgreat I think But it was a game I play with such
a bunch of like it was it was 19 Really cleverAwesome interesting people and
we had a great time Three people were secretlychosen to be the traitors and every night they

(13:26):
would murder someone and they would get kickedoff the show and they would just disappear We
wouldn't see them And we did challenges to earnmoney And and a few managed to last the whole
game without being murdered or banished by eachother Every day we would have a meeting where we
would bully one person out of the show It was soawful It is so kiwi It's like tall poppy

(13:46):
murder or you're You're out Exactly right YeahAnd the And so yeah I managed to stick around the
whole time and that to Biggie Well it was a hugebiggie Was it Wow Did you get a big prize
I won $30,000 What That is pretty good I won withmy friend and her as well And she

(14:06):
she's incredible And Eve we we got along reallywell because she not because of this but because
we're nice people But also she we teamed uptogether She has alopecia which is an autoimmune
disease like M.S. So Amit I was like Yeah that'smy guy Got to stick with this guy And then
because we lost our minds I started to questionher a little bit but I came back round by the end

(14:27):
Oh okay Yeah right We're going to have to explorethis more because this is interesting But but you
know I know we've known each other now for aboutmaybe six months If if six months because I was
elected to the board of directors in April Yesright Of M.S. Auckland Of Mt Auckland That's
right So I am a board of directors Everything Isay here is not representative of anybody else no

(14:51):
other organizations This is simply Sam and EmilySo I'm not speaking on anyone else's behalf As
the Ambassador of famous Auckland I am speakingEverything I say has come through Amy So Auckland
is 100% what they think You're shaking your headat me Okay I'll take that back Now I'll redact
that I just hope you have insurance because Idon't know What do you need Insurance The

(15:16):
Americans mean we need insurance We needinsurance Oh yeah of course No but Okay so it's
about six months that I met you six months agoand I didn't know Jack shit about
you Yeah I know But when I say star power I'm thesmallest star in the sky But but But hear me out
here I mean Auckland connected me I emailed youand I was like Hey I've got this idea And you're

(15:41):
like Great sign me up That'll be awesome Let's doit I didn't even Google you yet My name is Sam
Smith I'm quite hard to do Google well I know butI can figure out Let's see He's in my city
Does something like entertainment stuff I don'tknow I could whole grounds and an Oscar Oh stop

(16:01):
it That might be the other You're not a goat areyou Do you mean you got Oh got That's it Oh it's
going to be a Grammy An Oscar Well goat is justgreatest of all time You get to be a goat You can
be a cow I like it Oh dear But no I didn't knowwho you were And then I started looking and
I was like I was telling people I was like thisguy this guy he's on tour since he first for

(16:26):
Toastmaster New Zealand which I'm a huge fan Yesa huge fan Taskmaster is a great and so
rolling all the way back Maybe you're right Maybeyou are the star power And maybe I'm just here to
to give you the light and to shine the beaconbecause apparently beacon is the word we're going
to use This is this episode This is sponsored byBeacon Yeah whatever that is

(16:52):
If you're a sponsor give me a call Oh yes yesyeah yeah That's the thing we need to do as well
Yes Please sponsor this Yeah but anyway so Ididn't know who you were So I think that star
power actually is real because I was I was blownaway And then I've had the pleasure of going to
your stand up shows I'm going to obviously haveto binge the traitors now but you spoiled that
for me What year was that It was last year Shewas 23 Was it last year It was the beginning of

(17:17):
last year that we filmed Wow To get a bit sort ofemotional about it it was the first time I really
realized that oh I've got Emmys but that doesn'treally I got to do the show
kind of because I heaviness It was like is thatwhy they picked you Well no I think they picked

(17:38):
me because I'm a nice person But you keep relyingback on that Well yeah that's a nice person
That's one of my what's one of my things I meanI'm a nice guy All right fine And we'll judge
that later Yeah And yeah I know It was just whenI realized that Oh no
this thing's not going to hold me back Ifanything it's It's another sort of interesting

(17:58):
string to my bow I'm not just a straight whiteguy I'm a straight white guy with a base and on a
reality show Yeah yeah definitely And I could seeyou buttering them all up I did
this mix on the show You'll see this when youwatch your episode Why Don't spoil it Oh no it's
very early on It's not a spoiler I basically saidI'm going to try make people feel sorry for me so

(18:20):
that they keep me around Oh y you weaponise yourdisability
Wow Oh my God Okay I don't even know what to sayto that All right Moving on
Anyway so you are the star power And by the timeI realized who you were and I've seen you perform
I've seen all of the the incredible Like you'rejust every finger is full of talent Every

(18:46):
finger I mean you can sing You can play guitar Iwas standing there on Sunday while these
slides of my cycling came up and there you wereon a stage I didn't have my glasses on but when I
saw it I went Is that Eric Clapton No no He'sabout 50 years older than me so

(19:07):
thank you Well no it was because I didn't have myglasses on But you're standing there on a stage
with a like a flannel and a guitar and a guitarYeah I was like this dude's really fucking cool
Oh thank you so much Yeah well I want to say aswell like I feel like you deserve to be a
star from just Just your attitude in the way youtalk to people and you're nice to people as well

(19:31):
So I'm a nice person So yeah Yeah that would benice people Be nice people Yeah I do think though
and I'm going to pitch this to you We haven'ttalked about this before but see if you're up for
it I feel like as emcees or EMRs or whatever thetermers will come up with one Yeah we
should have a disability that we hate a rivaldisability Now I don't know what that's going to

(19:54):
be but I think we should really Wow Oh wow Isthat good or bad How does that feel It just means
that we feel better than these people Oh so we'regoing to get an ego boost and Superiority complex
because we have made against people with and Iwant to put diabetics I think people with
diabetes have to go to like type one Type two Ohthat's a good point We should do the one that

(20:20):
I reckon type two diabetes because type oneyou're born with Yeah And in a
way you're kind of born with them is so true Nono it's not No So we that's why we should have it
on type two because they are more like us Theyare people who have developed it through Oh right
right right Yeah They did all the right things toget to where they are right now Right Yeah Yeah I

(20:43):
don't know if you agree with that or not No Ilove it I love it I mean we could even go down
the A through room a thought I can't even say theword Rheumatoid arthritis There you go Yeah
that's a good There's another one We could justpit autoimmune versus autoimmune Who's going to
win I have the other thing about Amy that isreally great is because it isn't an autoimmune

(21:05):
disease that affects your nerves There are somany different ways that that it that that
What's the word that you can see it It it showsitself in different ways One of the things it
does with the inmates is it makes it hard toremember words sometimes So that was one of those
example That was a good one So yeah so somepeople will be in wheelchairs some people will

(21:28):
have some people will use cane some will have lowvision like me Some people will be blind Some
people won't be able to use one arm or somethingOh just fine Yeah You can't even tell Are you
pointing at yourself for that I think so yeahOkay Is your eyesight good enough to see me doing
that No No Okay Yeah Me over here A beacon Wellyou speak at the beacon There I am

(21:51):
But that's what I love about doing this with youAnd hopefully I mean if we had ten people Listen
ten people that What a waste of time What Stop itWell you were about to say it was worthwhile
Yes You would sit here just to hear yourself talkI don't

(22:11):
even Don't Don't bullshit a bullshitter You wouldYeah I would You would
I just think that if I If I If I If this meanssomething to just one person You hear that all
the time But I can say it It's true But more so Ithink it's the community we get into so much Yeah
we both We both get strength from that So Okay sowe've been tossing this idea around for what like

(22:39):
maybe four or five or six weeks back and forthYou know life got in the way We start getting
into it And quick story Sorry I was over gettingmy nails done a couple of weeks ago
at My Nail Lady I've been going to her for yearsby the way Thank you Love you Very very like the

(23:00):
man Oh Barry Beery Is that Barry theoryStrawberry Yes Draws
Barry Barry Anyway Barry I just can't let you sayBarry which is to me an
old white dude Okay But that's the problem withAmerican accents is that we say Barry with an E

(23:20):
and Barry with an A the same way ReallyStrawberry I do strawberry Raspberry
raspberry raspberry Yeah Very good Okay I'll getback to it Hello Barry I hope you listen I
hope you Yeah you sound cool Okay so woman walksin and I could tell she was new here

(23:40):
and she said she had Her fingernails were a meterlong and covered in dirt No Okay
Now she was just kind of lost to was Yeah Yeah Soshe walks in and she sits down next to me
and she tells the lady the technician she saysYou're going to have to grab my hand really
really hard and hold it because I'm shaky I havemissed one of her people and

(24:06):
I sat there and I could see how she was bituncomfortable and I just turned instantly and
went It's okay here I have a mess too And shelooked at me Laura if you're here I'm talking
about you girl And and it was you did look up tothe sky There is Laura the ghost Did you just see

(24:27):
that Like she was like if you're if you're upthere somewhere with the camera Laura if you look
at my camera I know And so we talked for maybe Idon't know 20 minutes And
she she expressed the exact same thing you and Ihad talked about so many times She says there
needs to be something here especially in NewZealand but we're bigger than that We know that

(24:50):
already We've got star power so of course we'rebigger than that I kind of regret saying star
power before Oh that's okay I won't let youforget it And then you know
and it needs to be uplifting It needs to bepositive And this woman who she was telling me
she can't work anymore she's got three kids andshe's a single mother And she said I still

(25:14):
have an Instagram account called Silver Liningswith Me because I just want it
there The world is good and we need thatpositivity And it just I wanted to cry because I
was like the things that you and I were going isthis a thing Is this a thing It it is Yeah it

(25:35):
really is And then on Sunday going to the eventour Christmas lunch for the society I met
another woman Onno She came running over and itwas awesome I love on I have to be a part of this
We need this we need this so badly And I call itright now I'm right I don't even have our number
Number Next week we're going to get her numberWe're going to call it Are we going to call her

(25:58):
Yeah Or we should just have her over Can we dothat Well we'll work on that We can do We got to
think about it somehow Someway So yeah that's Iwant to Yeah Funny story when we first
moved to Auckland I rented a house and I was likeOh I used to live in that neighborhood
on Sunday She was like Oh we live over here And Iwas like Oh I used to live in that neighborhood

(26:21):
on this street She goes What was your number Theywere right next door to my old house that I was
that we moved out of four years ago Uno was YeahIncredible Isn't that nice Well it was the street
I imagine if I lived there too No I'm not givingyou the street name What was the suburb Royal Oak
I used to work in Royal Oak But you didn't workon my street I worked on I worked at the Royal

(26:44):
Oak Dental Center Oh Is that the one by the packand save It's across the road from the pick and
save It's upstairs from the miracles Oh that'swhere our hair places over there Oh the dentist
That's weird No Underneath the dentist I think Ohthere's a hair salon That's where they get this
beautiful Oh it's Do you still go there Well I doyeah Just seems quite far away No no

(27:08):
no I follow the talent all right I don't I don'tcare where they are Okay She was in
Mount Eden before and I still went there I'vebeen going to her for eight years This This
doesn't happen overnight let me tell you How longdoes it take It's incredible About four and a
half 5 hours every six weeks Oh my gosh But I getgood reading I read a lot once it's going on So I

(27:31):
get to catch up on my on my book But yeah it's areally good book It's war and peace you
know 12 years Only when I get my hair done thoughYeah Napoleon hasn't even invaded yet but you
know someday Oh you know more about war and peacethan I do Whole story Oh I've never read that one

(27:51):
Have you No no I'm not really a book guy Were youa book guy when you had your eyesight Yes I was
You were And I suppose I am a book guide that Iwrite kids books But yeah with crayons and big
letters I just I just type it up on a screen andthen Yeah someone clever person who can do art
does all the drawings and makes it look reallypretty Well wait I got to know why Children's

(28:14):
book How did this come about The first thing Ibecause I lost my vision I wanted to I
wanted to be able to read something or dosomething with I had my with Harry my three year
old at the time So I wrote a I wrote a poem forhim and I thought I can remember a poem Poems are
like songs I just sent to him every night Andthen and then I sent it to my mum who was a

(28:38):
children's librarian So she has lots of greatideas She's a really good writer and I just like
Do you have any notes on this I mean I got a callback from her saying I've given it on to my
literary agent and I was like Oh you have aliterary agent That's cool You didn't know that
about my mum's publishing She has ghostwriter Sheis a she knows she's a real

(29:00):
writer Oh okay She's not She's not out thereShe's She's in Milford And
she She And then I got a call from the literaryagent saying Oh okay if I shot this round of it
And I was like Yeah of course Like any a womanThen I got a call maybe the week after from
Hachette the publishers saying Hey we want tomake your book And I was like Great what book are

(29:24):
you talking about They're like Oh you know SnakeBrook this is my first time Yeah it was about
it's about animals at a zoo setting up a birthdayparty for a kid called Harry And And yeah then
they made it and it was really cool So prettywell until they said Hey do you have any more
ideas And I said I've always wanted to write abook about a dentist who's scared of children So

(29:47):
they said Yeah cool write that So I made that onethat came out at the beginning of This year Yeah
this year And then they said do you would you Doyou write scripts I was like Yeah
that's my job I that's my day job And I said Yeahcould you write us a script book that's like
dialog And so I wrote a book called Miles andJones and they said Yeah cool we like this Can

(30:11):
you make some more And so I've just Book two iscoming out in February Book three is coming out
next November And I've still got to start writingbook four but it's been bought with like four of
them once Oh it's exciting It's so cool And Iabsolutely love it And it's just something I can
do at home when I feel like Okay I put it off alot So when's your next book coming out Next

(30:36):
one's coming out in February February 28th I dobelieve Myles and Jones and the Blizzard of Blobs
If only I had young children in my life to buyyour book Yeah I don't Okay Okay You just buy a
copy for yourself but that's cool I'm sure Icould go to the library You could You could buy a
copy and just give it to random kids you see onthe street I could That'd be a bit weird And then

(30:56):
I'd get arrested I don't think you get arrestedfor giving books to children I think that's quite
a good thing Yeah Oh okay I don't know Weirdpurple hair people You know I get some looks here
little girl on a book You know that would beawful Yeah If you got arrested for given books to
people then every harikrishna would be trueperson True Wow Where are they nowadays

(31:20):
