Nemyslím si, že by Ježíš utrpení vyhledával. Ale nevyhýbal se mu, když to jinak nešlo.“ „Tak proč se musím v kostelích dívat na obraz trpící Marie s umučeným synem v klíně? Sama jsem to zažila, když jsem chovala v náručí své mrtvé dítě.“ „Možná právě proto. Aby ses s ní mohla identifikovat. Rozumí ti. Utrpení je součástí života, ale není to hodnota samo o sobě. Ježíš učil, že s námi bude v radosti i bolesti. A jeho matka to chápala.“ I v této souvislosti Jan otevírá příběh Ludmily Javorové, ženy tajně vysvěcené na kněze, ženy v této roli umlčované. Bojí se církev matky? Ale bez ní by žádné křesťanství nebylo.
