Sergeant Tartaglia brings in a man named Harry Dean to see Detective Danny Clover. Danny says "Close the door, Tartaglia. It's okay, you can stay. Just close the door. Sit down, Mr. Dean". He says "Thank you". Danny says "What's on your mind?" Dean says "I'm 46 years old, Mr. Clover. I live at 903 Hillcrest Road in Queens. Once, when I was six and a half, I stole a peppermint stick. I got caught. Well, I mean, I gave myself up to my mother". Danny says "Go on, Mr. Dean". He says "I wanted to draw a parallel. Two days ago, I stole 20,000 dollars". Danny asks "And you're giving yourself up to me?" Dean says "Well, it was for my wife. You understand that, don't you?" Danny says "Just that you stole 20,000. That's all". Dean says "Well, here's my wife, Marcia's photograph. She's going on 43 now. Not very attractive anymore. I know that. She looks like what she is, after 20 years of me, a bank teller". Danny asks "You stole the money from the bank?" Dean says "Well, I stole 20,000 from the Charles Street National Bank where I worked because I was told I could have Marcia back for that amount of money". Danny asks "Are you trying to tell me that Marcia was kidnapped?" Dean says "Yeah, don't you see?" Danny says "All right. Go on". Dean says "Well, about nine o'clock yesterday, I got a phone call. A man said Marcia wouldn't be hurt if I took the money to that summer resort, Far Rockaway, register at the Idlewild Arms, put the money in the bottom bureau drawer, and leave. I did it, but they lied to me. Marcia hasn't come home. They've done something to her". Danny says "Tartaglia, Nothing to the newspapers about this. I'll get this picture of Mrs. Dean on the wires and then go up to Far Rockaway". Tartaglia says "Okay, Danny". Dean asks "What happens to me, Mr. Clover?" Danny says "Just what you expected, you go to jail".
