Reporter Joe Cathcart and the Police Lieutenant Halloran are looking at a once attractive blonde, in her early 30s, that is now on a slab in the city morgue. Halloran says "Yep, there you are. The unidentified body picked up off Pier 23, at the end of of Greenwich Street, at 3 P.M. yesterday. The Medical Examiner thinks she hit the water Tuesday night around 8 o'clock". Joe says "Okay Lieutenant, suicide?" Halloran says "And what else?" Joe says "I'm asking". Halloran says "If we decide different we'll let you know". Joe says "What's the matter? Wife overcook your eggs?" Halloran says "Just forget about the circulation buildup, that's all. I don't want to read any headlines about the police being baffled in the death of a mystery beauty. It's a suicide. Dame got to moping and jumped in the bay. We've had twelve just like her so far this year. Par for the course is twenty, so we'll have eight more between now and Christmas. No mystery threats now or dark foreigners or anonymous phone calls to your city desk". Joe says "Lieutenant Halloran, you have a nasty, suspicious mind". Halloran says "Why shouldn't I? What's Walter Dunn's top staff man doing on a routine suicide like this one? Right after I spend all morning with a little finishing school job, answering a million and one questions". Joe says "Hey, wait a minute. What finishing school job?" Halloran says "Tweed suit, horn rim specs, hair in a bun, you know her, Joe. I thought she was your leg man". Joe says "I don't know her, and my leg man is me. What's her name?" Halloran says "You got me. Ask Walter. He sent her". Joe says "Okay, thanks Halloran". Halloran says "And write it honest will you? Just this once".
