Each week, we will share expert tips to help you plan your perfect visit and explore the stories, secrets and legends that make the magic real.
From Walt's vision to today's hidden gems, we will help you feel more connected, more prepared, and more enchanted every step of the way.
(00:45):
So whether you're counting down the days to your next trip, or just dreaming of a stroll down Main Street, USA, this is your place.
Discover the wonder.
This is once upon a castle.
(01:05):
Hey everyone.
Welcome back to Once Upon a Castle.
Today I want you to picture this with me.
You're stepping through the gates of Disneyland, and there it is.
Main Street USA.
The sun's warm on your shoulders.
A soft breeze carries the smell of fresh churros and buttery popcorn just ahead.
The trolley bell clangs as it rolls past somewhere.
(01:27):
A ragtime piano tinkles from a shop.
Window and for a moment you just pause, you take it all in.
Before we dive deeper into the magic, I have to say that I have had the absolute best time preparing and researching for this episode.
I have gone through rounds and rounds of editing, revising what I will share with you, Disneyland, and really more specifically, main Street is full of history.
(01:58):
Guys, I went down many a rabbit hole and I wanted to share literally.
All the things, but I had to reign myself in.
I had to remind myself of the purpose of this podcast Once Upon a Castle, is for all types of Disney fans.
It's for the super fan who loves to nerd out over Disney history and all of those small details you might normally miss.
(02:23):
It is for friends who are new to Disney, maybe planning their first trip.
My hope is that for those friends, once upon a castle is a resource that they can use to make decisions about what they might do with their time in the parks.
Or to share with them things that they never even knew were, there to experience.
(02:43):
And of course, once upon a castle is for the Disney junkies.
Someone who maybe can't be at the parks at this very moment and just needs their Disney fix.
I want to fire hose you with.
All of the main street things, all of it, every little teensy, weeny detail, but because of time's sake, I know I needed to give you just enough information to metaphorically wet your whistle.
(03:14):
However, if wedding your whistle isn't enough and you need to chug down all of the Disney history, I would suggest two of my absolute favorite podcasts.
First Distillery with Kate and Kirk, and then we have the backside of water.
Both podcasts dive deep into Disney attractions, and they're really the forces that inspired me to start this podcast.
(03:43):
These two podcasts are what truly brought the magic to life for me.
Once I started learning more about park history, my Disney nerdom took on a whole new level, my friends and family.
Thank you deeply.
Uh, but you know, once upon a castle is kind of like their love child, so they keep the magic alive for me.
(04:10):
And I hope this podcast does the same for you.
Now, speaking of feeling the magic, I got this review from one of you and it really hit my heart.
It said I really enjoyed listening to this podcast.
Ginny has such an easy, pleasant voice that makes it a joy to listen to.
(04:30):
Oh, that's so nice.
In the first episode, she shared how her love of Disneyland grew when she started visiting with her son, and I loved hearing about how it was the joy and atmosphere that kept her coming back.
She also has her first guests on and their conversations about Disney connect to childhood memories, nostalgia and happiness was.
(04:52):
So relatable.
It felt warm, genuine, and fun, like chatting with a fellow Disney bestie.
I'm looking forward to hearing more episodes.
Wowzer.
Oh my gosh.
Thank you so much.
Um, that was from Ellie Ellis, writer.
Ellie Ellis, writer, thank you so much.
Your kind words.
(05:13):
They just mean so much to me, and the fact that you took the time to leave the review means even more like your time is precious and meaningful, and I just really appreciate that.
And this podcast was.
It was created to for me to just have fun and express myself and share my love with others.
(05:34):
So even if just like one other person appreciates it or can find some kind of value from it, I'm literally over the moon.
So I deeply appreciate you, Ellie, Alice, writer, thank you so much.
If you are enjoying the show so far, I'd love your help spreading the magic like Ellie Alice, writer did.
(05:56):
Please consider leaving a five star rating and writing a quick review.
Tell me what you like best, how I can keep getting better, and what you'd love to know more about.
About maybe like your favorite land or a must see attraction that you want a little bit more of a deep dive on your feedback shapes the episodes ahead.
(06:16):
So leave me as much as you can.
I would really appreciate it.
Uh, you can also reach me by email at magic at once upon a castle.com,
and I would just love to hear from all of you in one way or another.
Main Street, USA isn't just the first thing you see when you walk into Disneyland.
(06:42):
It's the heart of the park.
It's nostalgia, storytelling, and psychology all working together every.
Brick.
Every note of music, every curve in the street was designed to make you feel something.
It's not just an entrance, it's a story.
It's Waltz's way of saying Welcome home.
(07:06):
So grab a virtual churro and let's wander down main Street.
Together we'll peek into the windows.
Notice the details Most people miss and explore why even decades later.
This one street can still make you feel like you've stepped into another brighter world.
So this is the start of our four-part series all about Main Street, USA, the magic, the memories, and the meticulous design that makes it feel alive.
(07:35):
In this first episode, we'll focus on attractions, the experiences tucked between the shops and storefronts that bring the street to life.
Next time we'll explore entertainment.
The parades, the music, and the performers who make Main Street sparkle.
Then we will dive into dining from old fashioned ice cream parlors to the sense that guide you down Main Street.
(08:00):
And finally, we'll wrap it all up with a special guest who will share their personal love letter to Main Street USA.
So let's take our first steps onto Main Street, USA, where the magic of Disneyland truly begins.
Let's start at the very beginning.
You just scanned your tickets in, you walked through the gates and you're standing there, you're staring up.
(08:24):
You see the big Mickey mural that's made out of, beautiful flowers and landscaping there.
And then you look to your left and you look to your right, and there are tunnels that you can go through in order to enter into Disneyland Now.
The cool thing about this is while those tunnels serve as bridges for the train to go over and it holds the train station, the tunnels are actually there with a lot more intentionality than you might think.
(08:56):
The tunnels are actually waltz's way of bringing you into the story of Disneyland.
So we know that Mr.
Disney got his start making movies and we know that he loved storytelling.
So why would we expect anything less with his beloved park Disneyland? So when you walk through the tunnels on either side, you can pick to go left or you can pick to go right.
(09:23):
Um, there is actually a lot of debate about that.
Some people say that there is a right way or a wrong way.
I don't necessarily have a preference per se, but I often tend to find myself more going left.
I like to walk in that way.
I don't know why.
Well, I do know why, but we'll get into that in a little bit.
But as you walk through the tunnels, pay close attention.
(09:45):
'cause you will see movie posters from some of the famous movies that Disney has created over the years.
So for him, what he was trying to do was he was trying to create this illusion of, if you're like, in a movie theater, right? So you walk into your movie theater, which would be scanning into the gates, and you're standing there in front of the Mickey mural.
(10:07):
And as you go through the tunnels, you are seeing all of these movie posters, which are supposed to kind of resemble and stand for like movie previews.
So you're previewing all of the movies or all of the adventures, all of the possibilities that Disneyland has to offer you.
And then as you step through those.
Tunnels, the tunnels are a little dark, right? You step through the tunnels and, pouring of light comes because now you're on Main Street and it's kind of like the main attraction.
(10:39):
It's the big grand reveal and you're looking straight down Main Street.
And as you get about halfway down main Street, you can see the castle and what was super intentional, he didn't want you to see the castle from the beginning.
He kind of wanted to hide it from you and create this reveal moment as you continue down the street.
(11:01):
The other thing that's really neat about Main Street is that there is also a curve that helps crowd flow, making the street feel longer and more immersive, and kind of gives that cinematic pan in physical space.
So one thing you'll always hear me talk about on this podcast is the intentionality of the Disneyland Park and.
(11:24):
So every curve, every turn, there's always gonna be a purpose.
The other really cool thing about Main Street is, it was set up to kind of resemble the turn of the century, kind of the gilded age, that Americana hometown feel.
(11:44):
Give you this sense of like being home, being comfort.
A place where everybody, while not everybody's hometown will look this way, most don't, right? It gives you that sense of community belonging and that hometown feel.
Something that I thought was really cool is actually down Main Street, you'll see these old gas lamps.
(12:07):
The cool thing is, is those actually came in directly from, I believe it was Boston.
Um, not all of them, but a lot of them came from the streets of Boston and were used during that turn of the century time and Oh, I'm sorry.
Not Boston Baltimore.
That's right.
Oh, sorry about that.
They were imported in from Baltimore and they, that was actually one of the last American cities that still had the Gaslight fixtures.
(12:34):
And we get to use those now here, at Disneyland, and they do burn continuously, so all day.
But the flame size is regulated now by hidden electric valves.
But I thought that that was a really cool nod to the, to the gilded Age.
Gas lamps that were used back in that time era.
(12:55):
So trying to really create that authentic feel.
Here's another cool bit of information for you.
So we know that you do a lot of walking in Disneyland and we always need lots of benches to sit and relax.
And actually some of the first benches on Main Street were repurposed from Griffith Park, that Mery go-round area.
(13:19):
And if you remember from a few episodes ago, Griffith Park was big in Walt's life.
For one, it's where he took his daughters every Saturday for their daddy daughter days.
Wow.
Say that 20 times fast.
But Griffith Park is really kind of where that.
The idea of Disneyland was conceived.
Those first benches in Disneyland came from Griffith Park.
(13:41):
Now they have since been replaced, of course, but one of the original benches, is still preserved in the Opera House lobby.
And we'll talk more and a little bit about the Opera House, but, I always really think that that's cool that that's still there.
So what kind of inspired Waltz to build Main Street, USA and what, inspired and gave him like the vision, the feel, the, the vibe of Main Street? Well, walt Disney was a huge railroad fan.
(14:15):
He absolutely loved trains, and it goes all the way back to his youth.
He lived in Marline, Missouri and there was a train that went through there.
He had an uncle and his dad worked for the trains for a while.
But he just absolutely, they fascinated him So.
In 1948, he and, fellow train enthusiast and one of his, animators, ward Kimball, they actually went and attended the Chicago Railroad Fair and at the fair, Walt experienced full scale historic trains, recreations of different historical areas, and.
(14:56):
Fireworks.
So this really inspired his desire for creating a main street, USA.
So while he was there, you know, they had these areas that they kind of created their own little versions of Main Street USA and they had that turn of the century vibe.
And that fair is really what inspired Walt.
Like he wanted a main street and this is kind of what he wanted it to be like and feel like.
(15:22):
That fair definitely solidified him wanting a train system.
It's kind of funny because his wife Lillian was quoted saying that Walt only built Disneyland so that he could, have his own full-size train, which I think is so funny.
So he absolutely loved that at the Chicago Rail Railroad.
(15:45):
Fair go.
Oh my gosh, I'm gonna struggle with that.
Their train actually went around the the entire fair.
So if you, have been to Disneyland, or if you've seen a map of Disneyland, or we're gonna talk about this in a little bit, the train goes all the way around the perimeter.
Of Disneyland and that Chicago Fair is what inspired that.
(16:09):
So as Walt started to envision his creation for Disneyland, he brought on, we've talked about this before, a lot of his animators and friends to now become imagineers.
And one of those people that he brought on was Harper Goff, Harper Goff really helped him to develop Main Street.
(16:31):
So Harper Goff was from Fort Collins and a lot of Main Street is inspired from the look, uh, for Collins.
So the iron work, some civic mass scenes.
The Victorian elements.
If you've ever seen Fort Collins, you know, pictures or you've been there, you will see that Main Street USA and Disneyland really resembles that.
(16:53):
And that was because of Harper Goff bringing his hometown to Disneyland.
Main Street was also heavily inspired by Watt's Boyhood home town of Marline, Missouri.
And Marline is what provides the emotional core.
So that small town storefront rhythms, the simple two story commercial blocks, the memory of Americana, uh, Walt wanted to evoke.
(17:24):
So Marceline's Real Main Street is a bit more modest than what Disneyland's is, and less Victorian theatrical than Disneyland.
Now, Main Street is not a full scale main street, as you might see in your town, the imagineers used what is called force perspective.
(17:44):
And you will see this throughout all Disney parks.
Force perspective is this idea that the buildings on Main Street are built using a two-third scale at the ground floor and five eighth scale at the upper story.
So it creates this subtle optical illusion that makes the street feel cozy and welcoming, but it also makes things seem.
(18:08):
Bigger than they appear.
So if you are standing on Main Street, all of the bottom areas, that's where our shops, some of our restaurants are gonna be.
But up in the top part, the second story, there's nothing up there.
Like that's not, it's just empty.
But when you look at it from below, it looks like it is a full functioning second floor.
(18:31):
However, thanks to Force perspective, we get that illusion, so Walt's team, again, these are storytellers, these are movie creators.
So they borrowed the technique from Hollywood set Designs and not actually from architecture.
And it was essentially the first movie Illusionism, that was applied to a permanent urban design.
(18:56):
So the imagineers called it emotional architecture.
And their goal wasn't necessarily realism, but to evoke how a child remembers a small town street.
It's idolized, it's neat, it's sunlit, it's friendly, right? So when Main Street was being built.
In 1954 to 1955, the brick work was actually hand painted on plaster.
(19:23):
So it's not real brick work, it's hand painted plaster.
And this was done by scenic artists from the studio.
Walt really pulled in everything he knew about making movies and his crews to create this very immersive experience of Disneyland.
He specifically told them that he did not want the bricks to look even or symmetrical.
(19:50):
He wanted the buildings to look slightly imperfect, that small, real town craftsmanship, you have your local Masons, who built these buildings many, many years ago.
He wanted it to feel lived in.
If you also look closely, many of the windows have this like slight warp in their panes to mimic old hand pulled glass.
(20:17):
I just love those attentions to detail walt could have thought, okay, what can I get up quick? What can I get up cheap? What can I get up easy? But instead, even though he did do it very quickly, instead he was really intentional, like thinking, how are we painting on bricks? How do I want the glass to look in the windows? And as a guest, I always think like he thought of us, the guests, and how could he create, an authentic experience for us? And it's just those small details that I totally nerd out over, which is why we're having this podcast.
(20:57):
So every land, so we've got adventure land tomorrow, land, fantasy land, et cetera, has a clear spatial logic.
It's a jungle, it's the future.
It's fantasy, right? Main Street though was designed in liminal space, a psychological palette cleanser, which when I read this, it sent off a lot of like, oh, like, oh, okay.
(21:23):
That makes so much sense.
Like I love being in all of the lands and spots in Disneyland, but it's something about Main Street that just brings me so much peace.
And it's like I get to that area and I'm just cozy and I'm like, oh, yeah, now I can kind of relax.
(21:44):
I can slowly wander and.
You know, it, it's like, wow.
They, that was literally the point of this area, right? Was to like cleanse, the pallet.
So Imagineer, John Hench actually called it the decompression chamber.
That's what he called Main Street.
And it lets guest transition, I guess from the chaos, right, of adventure and fantasy and the future to just calmness something that is familiar, something that's cozy, something that's friendly.
(22:21):
So if you, um, are walking around and you're like, yeah, like I, I'm digging this vibe here on Main Street.
Or if you're like, whoa, it has been a crazy day.
Um, maybe go chill out on Main Street for a little bit and just de go to your decompression chamber.
Called Main Street and relax there.
(22:42):
They really were intentional about how they were gonna make that their palate cleanser, their decompression chamber.
So Main Street is filled with what we call sensory anchors.
So familiar smells, right? Like the baked goods, the churros, the, the popcorn we smell the coffee, the human scale architecture, music from your childhood, they've got like the ragtime piano playing.
(23:07):
So it's kind of like this idea of you are safe here.
It's so interesting how they even use music to kind of create this vibe.
Main Street, background music, there's always music playing and it isn't just random, like ragtime, like I always thought it was like, okay, like the ragtime music.
(23:29):
That totally makes sense.
It's the turn of the century that Americana, like this totally fits the vibe.
It's actually purposefully sequenced so that songs gradually slow in tempo and lower in key as you move toward the castle, which is giving you that subtle calming after the rush through the gates, right? You rush through those gates.
(23:52):
You're so excited.
I'm in Disneyland.
Oh my gosh, look at everything.
You know, it's um, can be very exciting, sometimes overwhelming, and in order to kind of like help to usher you through that chaos and calm you back down, they use music intentionally to do that now.
(24:13):
On the reverse side at night, the order reverses.
So when it's time to like, Hey, let's get outta here.
Um, you know, you've had a long, exhausting day.
The music actually becomes brighter and faster to lift the energy as guests are leaving, right? So they kinda wanna, you know, move people through like, alright, we're close time to move along people, but also, you know, they want you leaving with this energetic and exciting feeling.
(24:43):
Not necessarily like, oh my God, I'm so tired, I want to like die on this concrete.
You know, I don't know if you're like me, I have danced my way out of Disneyland many, many times because I suddenly feel so energetic and now, oh my gosh.
It's, it's making sense.
Totally making sense.
(25:05):
Main Street is full of shopping and restaurants, like much like a regular main street in your hometown.
Might be like, and when it was first created, Walt really wanted it to be as authentic as possible.
So there were some.
Very interesting stores, and food areas there on Main Street, like right now.
(25:29):
We'll get into more of the shops that are there, here in a little while of the episode, but for the most part, it's like your basic Disney merch, right? There are a couple spots where it's something that's unique, but it's just, you know, Mickey vomiting everywhere, however.
Walt wanted that authentic main, main street vibe.
(25:50):
So, there used to be an intimate apparel shop called The Wizard of Bras.
Yes, like a full on lingerie store there on Main Street.
And that really only lasted for the first year, which I can't imagine why, like, of course going to Disneyland and shopping for undies is what I have on my to-do list.
(26:15):
But, but you know, again, Wal strived for creating true life experiences.
242
00:26:21,330.0423399 --> 00:26:25,680.0423399
And Another store that they had was actually a real functioning pharmacy.
243
00:26:25,680.0423399 --> 00:26:27,330.0423399
It was called Upjohn Pharmacy.
244
00:26:27,390.0423399 --> 00:26:31,290.0423399
And that was there from 1955 to 1970.
245
00:26:31,290.0423399 --> 00:26:33,210.0423399
So that's really interesting to me.
246
00:26:33,930.0423399 --> 00:26:37,850.0423399
Now they didn't have, pharmacists that actually worked there.
247
00:26:37,850.0423399 --> 00:26:44,300.0423399
They had cast members who were kind of trained, but like mostly played the role of a pharmacist.
248
00:26:44,300.0423399 --> 00:26:46,130.0423399
So I'm not entirely sure.
249
00:26:46,130.0423399 --> 00:26:52,895.0423399
I didn't get enough information to know exactly what type of pharmaceuticals were being sold.
250
00:26:53,30.0423399 --> 00:26:56,540.0423399
You know, maybe like an acetaminophen, which that totally makes sense.
251
00:26:56,540.0423399 --> 00:27:03,980.0423399
Like after your long day, your feet might need a little ibuprofen or if you get a headache or something.
252
00:27:03,980.0423399 --> 00:27:10,130.0423399
But a real full fledged pharmacy was running from 1955 to 1970.
253
00:27:10,355.0423399 --> 00:27:12,905.0423399
They also had the Swift's market house.
254
00:27:12,995.0423399 --> 00:27:20,475.0423399
So you, and you could go, and you could buy your meats, your cheeses, like your deli items.
255
00:27:20,715.0423399 --> 00:27:26,55.0423399
You could buy that right there at Disneyland, which, hey, I'm not opposed to a good charcuterie board.
256
00:27:26,205.0423399 --> 00:27:28,935.0423399
And maybe it was that idea of like.
257
00:27:30,105.0423399 --> 00:27:36,495.0423399
You could go in there and get a little, a little deli, something for your lunch or your dinner and there you go.
258
00:27:36,495.0423399 --> 00:27:42,335.0423399
But, I just thought that that was really funny the market house itself is still standing right now.
259
00:27:42,335.0423399 --> 00:27:43,745.0423399
It's currently a Starbucks.
260
00:27:44,55.0423399 --> 00:27:45,525.0423399
You'll see the market house sign.
261
00:27:45,525.0423399 --> 00:27:54,975.0423399
So think back in the day, they used to have like a deli counter and you could just go in there and get your slab of meat and some cheese from, from uh, from Disneyland.
262
00:27:54,975.0423399 --> 00:27:59,985.0423399
And actually that one lasted for quite a while too from 1955 to 1970.
263
00:28:00,175.0423399 --> 00:28:08,275.0423399
The other thing that they had another store is they had WR Stories book and tobacco shop.
264
00:28:08,515.0423399 --> 00:28:13,675.0423399
So that was actually only there for two years from 1955 to 1957.
265
00:28:14,315.0423399 --> 00:28:17,525.0423399
You could buy all of your tobacco needs.
266
00:28:17,715.0423399 --> 00:28:21,195.0423399
Then they kind of went away with that and didn't allow smoking in the parks.
267
00:28:21,505.0423399 --> 00:28:28,595.0423399
So they got rid of the shop, but you'll still find on Main Street there is one of those smoking, I'm sorry.
268
00:28:29,240.0423399 --> 00:28:31,490.0423399
Smoking Indian, that's what they call 'em.
269
00:28:31,490.0423399 --> 00:28:39,590.0423399
I understand that that's not correct and I don't wanna offend anybody, but, that is still there on Main Street, right outside of the Main Street cinema.
270
00:28:39,860.0423399 --> 00:28:41,240.0423399
Just kind of a little nod.
271
00:28:41,945.0423399 --> 00:28:45,235.0423399
To a very interesting, shop to have.
272
00:28:45,475.0423399 --> 00:28:50,965.0423399
They also had the Eastman Kodiak Camera Center, so that makes a lot of sense.
273
00:28:50,965.0423399 --> 00:28:53,905.0423399
And that was there from 1955 to the 1970s.
274
00:28:54,115.0423399 --> 00:28:55,165.0423399
Of course that makes sense.
275
00:28:55,165.0423399 --> 00:28:58,535.0423399
And there is still a little camera store, there on Main Street.
276
00:28:58,565.0423399 --> 00:29:05,715.0423399
But, you know, nowadays people have their phones and a lot of people, that's how they're using their, getting their pictures and stuff.
277
00:29:05,715.0423399 --> 00:29:15,25.0423399
But back then, like it probably was really important to be able to go buy a camera or film or, you know, whatever you might need, in order to capture those memories.
278
00:29:15,355.0423399 --> 00:29:19,405.0423399
And Kodiak was a big sponsor of the early days of Disney, so.
279
00:29:20,170.0423399 --> 00:29:22,630.0423399
Of course that makes sense that they would put a little store there.
280
00:29:23,0.0423399 --> 00:29:25,460.0423399
Here's actually something that was so interesting.
281
00:29:25,670.0423399 --> 00:29:35,930.0423399
There was a Disneyland branch of the US Post Office, a full functioning US post office, and that was from 1955 to the 1970s.
282
00:29:36,320.0423399 --> 00:29:47,330.0423399
Now, while there's not still a post office in Disneyland, there actually are little letter boxes that you can mail out letters, postcards, and I have done this.
283
00:29:47,330.0423399 --> 00:30:00,670.0423399
So when I was there on my bachelorette trip, I wrote my then fiance, now husband, a little postcard, and I popped it into one of those, Disneyland post boxes.
284
00:30:00,670.0423399 --> 00:30:04,660.0423399
And lo and behold, it's made its way here.
285
00:30:04,960.0423399 --> 00:30:06,580.0423399
Maybe come prepared with stamps.
286
00:30:06,640.0423399 --> 00:30:07,810.0423399
I did not.
287
00:30:07,900.0423399 --> 00:30:09,550.0423399
And then I realized, oh wait.
288
00:30:09,805.0423399 --> 00:30:13,525.0423399
I should have a stamp and you cannot buy stamps at the Disneyland park.
289
00:30:13,525.0423399 --> 00:30:16,345.0423399
We tried, but it made its way here.
290
00:30:16,355.0423399 --> 00:30:17,645.0423399
they're all over.
291
00:30:17,645.0423399 --> 00:30:20,765.0423399
They're in the hotels, they are there in Disneyland.
292
00:30:20,795.0423399 --> 00:30:23,735.0423399
They're at DCA, so be on the lookout.
293
00:30:23,735.0423399 --> 00:30:29,775.0423399
Just kind of a cool way to, interact with the parks and send yourself or send other people.
294
00:30:29,775.0423399 --> 00:30:32,55.0423399
Fun, little fun little trinkets.
295
00:30:32,685.0423399 --> 00:30:45,135.0423399
There was actually a store called Cole of California, and that was also open for one year only, and it was a swimsuit shop, which, you know, it's Southern California.
296
00:30:45,315.0423399 --> 00:30:48,615.0423399
You know, you're on vacation, you might need a swimsuit.
297
00:30:48,645.0423399 --> 00:30:54,25.0423399
But, I think the last thing most people were looking to do was go to Disneyland.
298
00:30:54,665.0423399 --> 00:30:57,575.0423399
By, uh, braziers and Swimsuits.
299
00:30:57,575.0423399 --> 00:30:59,495.0423399
So that didn't last very long.
300
00:31:00,5.0423399 --> 00:31:06,215.0423399
But I love Walt's effort in trying to create real authentic stores.
301
00:31:06,945.0423399 --> 00:31:19,170.0423399
One of the coolest things, that I found interesting about the early Main Street days was they actually had a functioning Western Union Telegraph counter, and.
302
00:31:19,825.0423399 --> 00:31:24,115.0423399
Guests could send real telegrams out from that place.
303
00:31:24,115.0423399 --> 00:31:28,495.0423399
Now there is no more Telegraph Center that's not there anymore.
304
00:31:28,495.0423399 --> 00:31:34,705.0423399
However, there is the telegraph window and that can be found on the east side of Main Street.
305
00:31:34,705.0423399 --> 00:31:39,865.0423399
And that's kind of like between Market House, which is the Starbucks now and the Disney cloths.
306
00:31:40,725.0423399 --> 00:31:50,85.0423399
And you can hear, you gotta listen closely, but you can hear the sound of clicking Morris Code and actually it is telling us something.
307
00:31:50,475.0423399 --> 00:31:51,585.0423399
It's not random.
308
00:31:51,645.0423399 --> 00:32:01,515.0423399
It is Morris code for Walt Disney's dedication speech that he gave on the opening day of Disneyland, July 17th, 1955.
309
00:32:01,515.0423399 --> 00:32:06,315.0423399
So if you've never heard that, go try to find that and take a listen.
310
00:32:06,865.0423399 --> 00:32:14,185.0423399
Main Street in the good old days was a very interesting bustling place.
311
00:32:14,555.0423399 --> 00:32:19,295.0423399
So let's start to get into some of the attractions there on Main Street.
312
00:32:19,295.0423399 --> 00:32:31,625.0423399
And of course, I would be remiss if we did not start with the train station, so we knew that Walt Disney absolutely had to have a train and a train station.
313
00:32:32,420.0423399 --> 00:32:33,980.0423399
At his Disneyland park.
314
00:32:34,740.0423399 --> 00:32:47,70.0423399
The train is actually built one eighth scale and there are four main locomotives and each one was named and themed to represent a specific era of American railroading.
315
00:32:47,310.0423399 --> 00:32:48,150.0423399
And they even.
316
00:32:48,380.0423399 --> 00:32:57,200.0423399
Age, visually to match their themed time period with differences in paint, brash trim lettering styles.
317
00:32:57,320.0423399 --> 00:33:04,550.0423399
So when Disneyland opened in 1955, the trains actually did not belong to Disneyland at all.
318
00:33:04,550.0423399 --> 00:33:11,150.0423399
They were part of Walt Disney's personal company, the Santa Fe and Disneyland railroad.
319
00:33:11,150.0423399 --> 00:33:16,340.0423399
Yes, my friends, he opened his own railroad company.
320
00:33:16,950.0423399 --> 00:33:20,760.0423399
Walt actually owned the trains himself through a private corporation.
321
00:33:21,445.0423399 --> 00:33:23,905.0423399
And that was called RET Law Enterprises.
322
00:33:24,205.0423399 --> 00:33:28,375.0423399
And RET Law is actually, that's Walter spelled backwards.
323
00:33:28,685.0423399 --> 00:33:33,185.0423399
Disney later sold them to the parks though in 1982.
324
00:33:33,215.0423399 --> 00:33:41,315.0423399
But from 1955 to 1982, Disney Land did not own the trains.
325
00:33:41,975.0423399 --> 00:33:50,945.0423399
The last car on some of the trains is called the Lily Bell, and that, is a nod to his beautiful wife, Lillian Disney.
326
00:33:51,245.0423399 --> 00:33:54,965.0423399
And it's an elegant, Victorian style parlor car.
327
00:33:54,965.0423399 --> 00:33:58,655.0423399
And that was decorated by Miss Lily and Disney herself.
328
00:33:59,55.0423399 --> 00:34:07,675.0423399
The locomotives burn biodiesel, which gives off a nostalgic steam smell without the environmental impacts.
329
00:34:08,95.0423399 --> 00:34:13,585.0423399
The cars were all named for important figures in railroading.
330
00:34:13,635.0423399 --> 00:34:14,745.0423399
So, let's see here.
331
00:34:14,745.0423399 --> 00:34:21,225.0423399
We had the CK Holiday, and that was named after Cyrus Kurtz holiday.
332
00:34:21,225.0423399 --> 00:34:35,735.0423399
And he was the founder of Atkinson, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway EP Ripley was named after, Edward Payson Ripley, and he was the Santa Fe Railway's first President.
333
00:34:36,815.0423399 --> 00:34:42,875.0423399
Fred g Gurley was the then president of the Santa Fe Railway.
334
00:34:44,60.0423399 --> 00:34:52,730.0423399
Ernest s Marsh was another Santa Fe railway president, and Ward Kimball was one of Walt's nine old men.
335
00:34:52,730.0423399 --> 00:34:54,200.0423399
He was a good friend of Walt's.
336
00:34:54,260.0423399 --> 00:35:10,420.0423399
And as we said earlier, an avid train lover, and he's the one that went with, Walt's to the Chicago Railway Fair and kind of help to solidify this idea of, oh yeah, I'm getting a railway in my park.
337
00:35:11,60.0423399 --> 00:35:23,360.0423399
The main Street train station acts as the theatrical curtain of Disneyland, so you first walk into Disneyland, you scan your tickets, and you're gonna look right up and you're gonna see the beautiful train station.
338
00:35:23,360.0423399 --> 00:35:24,440.0423399
That's that curtain.
339
00:35:24,470.0423399 --> 00:35:28,230.0423399
The curtain rises as you walk under those, tunnels.
340
00:35:28,560.0423399 --> 00:35:37,590.0423399
In the tunnels, you're seeing the preview movie posters, and then out onto Main Street where the show be gins, your adventure begins.
341
00:35:41,430.0423399 --> 00:35:45,180.0423399
Alright, we have tackled Walt's favorite place in the park.
342
00:35:45,210.0423399 --> 00:35:50,370.0423399
Now let's actually go to the right and to the right.
343
00:35:50,370.0423399 --> 00:35:52,770.0423399
We will see the Opera House.
344
00:35:52,890.0423399 --> 00:35:57,870.0423399
Now the Main Street Opera House was one of the first buildings constructed in Disneyland.
345
00:35:58,260.0423399 --> 00:36:01,980.0423399
It was originally used as a lumber mill during the parks construction.
346
00:36:03,735.0423399 --> 00:36:20,445.0423399
The woodwork needed for constructing much of Main Street and other areas was processed there at the upper house for some years, even after Disneyland opened in 1955, the Opera House did not host a formal theater production or fixed shows.
347
00:36:20,445.0423399 --> 00:36:26,685.0423399
It was more of like a multi-purpose space behind the scenes support promos displays.
348
00:36:27,145.0423399 --> 00:36:54,925.0423399
In 1963 to 1964, the Mickey Mouse Club headquarters was there at the Opera House, and a kind of cool fact is Main Street actually had one of the first synchronized lighting control systems in the us And when Disneyland opened all of the lights on Main Street, the lamps, the windows, the signage could be dimmed or brightened together from a central control board that was located there at the Opera House basement.
349
00:36:55,355.0423399 --> 00:37:01,325.0423399
This allowed for smooth transitions from day to night without anyone flipping individual switches.
350
00:37:01,325.0423399 --> 00:37:04,835.0423399
I can't imagine like having to be the person running around flipping all these switches.
351
00:37:05,195.0423399 --> 00:37:11,765.0423399
So this became actually a prototype for future show lighting systems used across the Disneyland Park.
352
00:37:11,915.0423399 --> 00:37:14,855.0423399
So that was something that was housed there in the Opera House.
353
00:37:14,855.0423399 --> 00:37:23,405.0423399
Now do what the Opera House has been known for and is most popular for was in 1965.
354
00:37:23,435.0423399 --> 00:37:27,815.0423399
It took on its defining show great moments with Mr.
355
00:37:27,815.0423399 --> 00:37:28,445.0423399
Lincoln.
356
00:37:29,135.0423399 --> 00:37:36,365.0423399
This show featured one of Disney's early human audio animatronic figures Abraham Lincoln.
357
00:37:36,725.0423399 --> 00:37:42,905.0423399
And it originated at the 19 64 65 New York's World Fair.
358
00:37:43,145.0423399 --> 00:37:47,375.0423399
It was displayed there and then it was moved to Disneyland after the fair.
359
00:37:47,615.0423399 --> 00:37:55,385.0423399
And from that time, that building has been more or less used as a theater or like exhibit area featuring Mr.
360
00:37:55,385.0423399 --> 00:38:00,215.0423399
Lincoln, along with rotating exhibits and displays hide to Disney history.
361
00:38:00,215.0423399 --> 00:38:16,665.0423399
So when you first walk into the Opera House right away, you're actually gonna run into one of the benches from Griffith Park, along with a carousel horse, a popcorn stand, and a big, beautiful picture of Walt Disney at Disneyland.
362
00:38:17,590.0423399 --> 00:38:22,570.0423399
Then you'll take a right, and that's like where that exhibit area is right now.
363
00:38:22,570.0423399 --> 00:38:26,830.0423399
There is an amazing exhibit about Disneyland's 70th anniversary.
364
00:38:26,830.0423399 --> 00:38:29,740.0423399
It's kind of the history and the creation of Disneyland.
365
00:38:30,160.0423399 --> 00:38:34,60.0423399
Lots of amazing photographs and cool artifacts.
366
00:38:34,60.0423399 --> 00:38:39,570.0423399
They bring, things out of the, the archives and the Disney Family Museum.
367
00:38:39,790.0423399 --> 00:38:45,820.0423399
I've also been in there, I've seen, uh, oh, one of my favorites was the Haunted Mansion exhibit that they did.
368
00:38:46,180.0423399 --> 00:38:50,770.0423399
So they really use kind of that space there as exhibits.
369
00:38:50,770.0423399 --> 00:39:04,810.0423399
So if you are looking for something that's a little bit different, you know, maybe not ride related or it's a hot day and you kind of need a break in some amazing ac, pop in there and check out the different exhibits that they have.
370
00:39:05,635.0423399 --> 00:39:12,715.0423399
Now, right now it is hosting a special exhibit in the theater.
371
00:39:12,835.0423399 --> 00:39:17,35.0423399
So now we have, instead of great moments with Mr.
372
00:39:17,35.0423399 --> 00:39:25,195.0423399
Lincoln, we have Walt Disney, A Magical Life, which is, what people are now knowing as the, the Walt Animatronic.
373
00:39:25,195.0423399 --> 00:39:34,405.0423399
So there is a new human audio animatronic that is made to resemble Walt Disney himself, and the show tells his story.
374
00:39:34,405.0423399 --> 00:39:37,985.0423399
Now, eventually, it said that the great moments with Mr.
375
00:39:37,985.0423399 --> 00:39:47,265.0423399
Lincoln and Walt Disney Magical life, they're meant to rotate, but they're not quite there yet, but amazing shows that you can go in and see.
376
00:39:47,635.0423399 --> 00:39:50,725.0423399
Also in the Opera House is the Disney Gallery.
377
00:39:51,35.0423399 --> 00:40:00,875.0423399
You can enter in through the Opera House itself, or there's like an entrance off a little bit more to the right side of the main entrance and just amazing art.
378
00:40:01,280.0423399 --> 00:40:06,230.0423399
Art pieces there, statues, figures, painted art drawings.
379
00:40:06,230.0423399 --> 00:40:10,180.0423399
One of my favorite things to do is if they have, a sketch artist there.
380
00:40:10,180.0423399 --> 00:40:13,660.0423399
Sometimes they have sketch artists there doing live drawings.
381
00:40:14,20.0423399 --> 00:40:16,990.0423399
That's so fun to watch them at work.
382
00:40:16,990.0423399 --> 00:40:22,730.0423399
But that's a really cool place to just go in, check out, enjoy your day, kind of see some of the cool stuff.
383
00:40:22,780.0423399 --> 00:40:24,880.0423399
Across the way from.
384
00:40:25,825.0423399 --> 00:40:27,255.0423399
The, opera House.
385
00:40:27,255.0423399 --> 00:40:31,395.0423399
We have city hall and we have the firehouse.
386
00:40:31,395.0423399 --> 00:40:38,415.0423399
So city hall really serves as the home of Disneyland's publicity department and guest services.
387
00:40:38,775.0423399 --> 00:40:40,935.0423399
So it's a beautiful facade.
388
00:40:40,935.0423399 --> 00:40:50,955.0423399
It's made to look like a home town, city hall, great for pictures, great for just ushering you into the vibe and the atmosphere.
389
00:40:51,205.0423399 --> 00:40:56,815.0423399
Nothing like super exciting as far as far as the typical guest to go do.
390
00:40:56,845.0423399 --> 00:41:08,355.0423399
But if you are, you know, lost and found, or you need, one of like the DA passes or if you're going on a different tour of sorts, you can go there to City Hall.
391
00:41:08,355.0423399 --> 00:41:17,205.0423399
If you just need anything like guest relations, pop in there to City Hall and they can get you taken care of Now, right next to City Hall.
392
00:41:17,565.0423399 --> 00:41:19,665.0423399
Is the firehouse.
393
00:41:19,665.0423399 --> 00:41:30,975.0423399
So opening day, 1955, the firehouse house, a real horse drawn fire wagon, and that would actually carry guests down Main Street.
394
00:41:31,335.0423399 --> 00:41:35,805.0423399
The wagon was pooled by two horses named Bess Hand, Jess.
395
00:41:37,430.0423399 --> 00:41:46,275.0423399
Now, now in 1958, Disneyland added a new motorized fire engine, often referred to as the Main Street Fire engine.
396
00:41:46,515.0423399 --> 00:41:54,875.0423399
And this was designed by Imagineer Bob Ger, the fire wagon continued running until late, 1960.
397
00:41:55,985.0423399 --> 00:42:00,155.0423399
When it was retired and it was placed on display inside the firehouse.
398
00:42:00,155.0423399 --> 00:42:04,55.0423399
So if you go inside the firehouse itself, you're gonna see that.
399
00:42:04,575.0423399 --> 00:42:09,975.0423399
You're also gonna see there's a lot of that like nostalgic storytelling in there.
400
00:42:10,5.0423399 --> 00:42:18,505.0423399
Items and memorabilia, photographs of what, that turn in the century era firehouse might look like.
401
00:42:18,785.0423399 --> 00:42:31,945.0423399
Now you might be asking yourself, why a firehouse? Why would Walt choose that? He felt like it was a symbol of community pride, safety, it added that nostalgic storytelling.
402
00:42:31,945.0423399 --> 00:42:42,985.0423399
It's not just about commerce or entertainment on Main Street, right? But he wanted that real life feeling and, well, what does every hometown need is you need a firehouse, of course.
403
00:42:42,985.0423399 --> 00:42:43,435.0423399
So.
404
00:42:44,215.0423399 --> 00:42:44,995.0423399
We got that.
405
00:42:45,335.0423399 --> 00:42:52,625.0423399
Another cool thing about the firehouse is right above the firehouse is actually Walt Disney's personal apartment.
406
00:42:52,985.0423399 --> 00:42:57,755.0423399
So that was a place that he created just for himself and his family.
407
00:42:57,785.0423399 --> 00:43:07,655.0423399
It's a really small area, I think it's like 500 square feet, um, that he, he wanted a place to be at Disneyland.
408
00:43:07,685.0423399 --> 00:43:16,385.0423399
Dude was a workaholic, and especially in the beginning years of Disneyland, he wanted to be around and be a part of it all.
409
00:43:16,385.0423399 --> 00:43:19,355.0423399
So he created his little home away from home.
410
00:43:19,355.0423399 --> 00:43:23,810.0423399
So that is where he, he would spend his time, he would sleep there, he would work there.
411
00:43:24,900.0423399 --> 00:43:27,90.0423399
And it really is preserved in history.
412
00:43:27,310.0423399 --> 00:43:35,630.0423399
They offer tours up, to go see his apartment and I've never done that, but it's on my bucket list.
413
00:43:35,630.0423399 --> 00:43:37,100.0423399
I would love to go see that.
414
00:43:37,130.0423399 --> 00:43:40,880.0423399
'cause it is saved and preserved exactly as he left it.
415
00:43:40,910.0423399 --> 00:43:55,350.0423399
When he passed away in 1966, there is a fire pole that goes from his apartment down to the firehouse, which it's now closed off because somebody at some point decided they would try to climb their way up the fire pole.
416
00:43:55,620.0423399 --> 00:44:01,530.0423399
But Walt had been known to use the fire pole to get down from his apartment to the lower level.
417
00:44:01,530.0423399 --> 00:44:04,530.0423399
So I think that that's a pretty funny little thought.
418
00:44:04,980.0423399 --> 00:44:09,840.0423399
And if you look up into the window of the apartment, there is a lamp, it's Walt's lamp.
419
00:44:09,870.0423399 --> 00:44:15,900.0423399
So when Walt was alive, if he was in the parks, that lamp would be lit to kind of let.
420
00:44:16,285.0423399 --> 00:44:18,775.0423399
Guests know, Hey, Walt is here with you.
421
00:44:19,105.0423399 --> 00:44:26,725.0423399
And now it's just lit a hundred percent of the time as kind of an in, in memoria to Walt and his time there.
422
00:44:27,515.0423399 --> 00:44:47,15.0423399
One thing that I like to do is, I told you earlier, I don't necessarily have a preferred go left or go right under the, the tunnels, but I do, when I go to the left, I do like to walk by Walt's apartment and it's, you know, it's in the morning when you first get there and just say, good morning Uncle Walt.
423
00:44:47,65.0423399 --> 00:44:51,895.0423399
And, and just kind of have that tribute to him as I walk into his park.
424
00:44:52,435.0423399 --> 00:45:00,505.0423399
So if we continue down Main Street, like we're heading towards the castle on the left side is you will have some shopping.
425
00:45:00,595.0423399 --> 00:45:08,665.0423399
So we're actually gonna bounce over to the right side where we will have one of my favorite places, the Main Street cinema.
426
00:45:09,55.0423399 --> 00:45:12,545.0423399
So it's really, it's a living archive.
427
00:45:12,575.0423399 --> 00:45:17,345.0423399
It's connecting guests to Disneyland in the beginning of their animation.
428
00:45:17,345.0423399 --> 00:45:21,365.0423399
You can see those original Mickey shorts playing in there.
429
00:45:21,665.0423399 --> 00:45:30,615.0423399
And the cool thing is, is for the first few years that it was opened, it actually showed public domains, silent comedies from Chaplain and Harold Lloyd.
430
00:45:30,855.0423399 --> 00:45:34,215.0423399
And then they switched to just doing all Disney content.
431
00:45:34,245.0423399 --> 00:45:43,875.0423399
Recently they did a little homage, show to the Sherman brothers who were, just pivotal members of the Disney family.
432
00:45:44,525.0423399 --> 00:45:47,285.0423399
Over the years in creating tons of amazing music.
433
00:45:47,615.0423399 --> 00:45:55,875.0423399
The Tiki Room, it's a small world, like the list goes on and on, but for the most part they share little, Mickey Mouse shorts.
434
00:45:55,875.0423399 --> 00:45:59,805.0423399
So it's a great place to step into.
435
00:45:59,995.0423399 --> 00:46:01,255.0423399
They have benches in there.
436
00:46:01,255.0423399 --> 00:46:02,785.0423399
It's always air conditioned.
437
00:46:02,815.0423399 --> 00:46:04,525.0423399
It's calm and quiet.
438
00:46:04,525.0423399 --> 00:46:07,885.0423399
It's just a great place to like rest and relax.
439
00:46:07,935.0423399 --> 00:46:13,605.0423399
Do your nod back to the OG what it all started with, right? It all started with a mouse and it's so fun.
440
00:46:13,955.0423399 --> 00:46:21,725.0423399
A lot of times we don't get to see those, especially if you grew up, you know, before Disney plus seeing those.
441
00:46:22,40.0423399 --> 00:46:26,60.0423399
Didn't really happen all that much, so it was always nice to go and watch those.
442
00:46:26,540.0423399 --> 00:46:30,350.0423399
Now when you walk into the cinema, you're gonna meet a special friend.
443
00:46:30,350.0423399 --> 00:46:32,930.0423399
You're actually gonna meet Tilly, the ticket taker.
444
00:46:32,930.0423399 --> 00:46:37,970.0423399
And if you look on her name badge, she is from Marceline, Missouri.
445
00:46:38,250.0423399 --> 00:46:44,410.0423399
So the cool thing about Disney cast members, their name badge, has their name and then it also says where they are from.
446
00:46:44,410.0423399 --> 00:46:49,600.0423399
So Miss Tilly is taking your tickets there, and she is from Marline, Missouri.
447
00:46:49,850.0423399 --> 00:47:03,820.0423399
Another cool thing that they added this year for the 70th, and I don't know how long it will last, but if you have magic bands, you can go up to Tilly and scan it and you'll get, a souvenir ticket from the Main Street Cinema.
448
00:47:03,820.0423399 --> 00:47:06,310.0423399
So Main Street Cinema is one of my favorites.
449
00:47:06,310.0423399 --> 00:47:07,240.0423399
Highly recommend it.
450
00:47:07,240.0423399 --> 00:47:09,550.0423399
It's just a great place to grab a snack.
451
00:47:09,550.0423399 --> 00:47:13,690.0423399
Go have a seat and just relax and enjoy the atmosphere.
452
00:47:15,210.0423399 --> 00:47:21,630.0423399
Now getting to one of my favorite things about Main Street are the windows Yes.
453
00:47:21,630.0423399 --> 00:47:22,50.0423399
People.
454
00:47:22,50.0423399 --> 00:47:24,690.0423399
We are gonna talk about Windows.
455
00:47:24,870.0423399 --> 00:47:33,420.0423399
Little did you little, did you know that when you came to this Disneyland podcast we would have such an admiration for windows, but we do.
456
00:47:34,100.0423399 --> 00:47:39,670.0423398
So the windows, when you look around Main Street all have lettering on them.
457
00:47:40,70.0423398 --> 00:47:41,360.0423398
They're not just blank windows.
458
00:47:41,360.0423398 --> 00:47:57,80.0423398
So not only does it help bring the town of Main Street to life, giving it that authentic feel, right, you're walking down your own main street and business signs are often put on windows or, special messages are put on the windows.
459
00:47:57,85.0423398 --> 00:47:57,165.0423398
Well.
460
00:47:58,325.0423398 --> 00:48:18,965.0423398
The special thing about Disneyland's windows is they're not just random, letterings disneyland, main Street Windows feature over 80 tributes that honor individuals who have made significant contribution to the park's creation, its development and its legacy.
461
00:48:18,965.0423398 --> 00:48:21,95.0423398
So we call these tribute windows.
462
00:48:21,455.0423398 --> 00:48:33,445.0423398
So some of the tribute windows that you might see, they have fun little, like, play on words or, they try to like play towards whatever that the person that it's honoring.
463
00:48:33,445.0423398 --> 00:48:43,305.0423398
Like what? What were they good at? What did they do for the parks? On the window it says, Exentia the musical Quill lyrics and Librettos by Exentia.
464
00:48:43,425.0423398 --> 00:48:46,395.0423398
And that's above the Opera House is where you'll find that window.
465
00:48:46,395.0423398 --> 00:48:56,265.0423398
Now, why is that significant? Well, Exentia was known for writing, the lyrics, I believe for Pirates of the Caribbean Ride.
466
00:48:56,890.0423398 --> 00:48:59,325.0423398
Yoho Yoho, a Pirate's Life for me.
467
00:48:59,715.0423398 --> 00:49:04,545.0423398
So, of course, you know that little musical nod, his window would represent that.
468
00:49:04,905.0423398 --> 00:49:08,655.0423398
Then we have a window that is dedicated to Wally Bogue.
469
00:49:08,655.0423398 --> 00:49:10,935.0423398
And Wally Bogue was a performer.
470
00:49:10,935.0423398 --> 00:49:16,885.0423398
It was like a vaudeville style performer, at the Golden Horseshoe Review that was there in Frontier Land.
471
00:49:16,885.0423398 --> 00:49:27,435.0423398
So Wally's window reads Wally Bogue, golden Vaudeville routines, Wally Bogue prop, and that is above Carnation Cafe.
472
00:49:27,735.0423398 --> 00:49:29,85.0423398
Then we have Mr.
473
00:49:29,85.0423398 --> 00:49:29,865.0423398
Rowley Crump.
474
00:49:30,315.0423398 --> 00:49:31,305.0423398
Absolutely love him.
475
00:49:31,305.0423398 --> 00:49:35,415.0423398
He was huge in developing the haunted mansion.
476
00:49:35,775.0423398 --> 00:49:47,215.0423398
So Rollie's window reads, rolly crump Fargo's, palm parlor predictions that will haunt you, bizarre, whimsical, and weird designs to die for.
477
00:49:47,845.0423398 --> 00:49:53,5.0423398
Um, Roland Roland f Crump, um, assistant to the poem reader.
478
00:49:54,70.0423398 --> 00:49:55,120.0423398
So you can see that fun.
479
00:49:55,360.0423398 --> 00:49:56,920.0423398
Then we have Alice Davis.
480
00:49:56,920.0423398 --> 00:50:00,10.0423398
And Alice Davis was, um, her husband was Mark Davis.
481
00:50:00,10.0423398 --> 00:50:08,620.0423398
They were both imagineers and she was really well known for creating all of the costumes for the Dolls in small world.
482
00:50:08,620.0423398 --> 00:50:12,550.0423398
So her window reads Alice Davis Small World Costume Co.
483
00:50:12,630.0423398 --> 00:50:15,540.0423398
Alice Davis seamstress to the Stars.
484
00:50:15,820.0423398 --> 00:50:27,10.0423398
And then one of my favorite windows is the last window I'm gonna leave you with, and that window reads Ron Dominguez, orange Grove Property Management.
485
00:50:27,40.0423398 --> 00:50:31,690.0423398
We care for your property as if it were our own Ron Dominguez.
486
00:50:32,620.0423398 --> 00:50:34,600.0423398
Now the cool thing about that.
487
00:50:34,925.0423398 --> 00:50:49,595.0423398
Is, if you remember from one of our very first episodes that Walt Disney bought the land that Disneyland is currently on, it was an orange grove and he bought it from the Dominguez family.
488
00:50:49,955.0423398 --> 00:50:53,795.0423398
Ron Dominguez grew up on that orange grove.
489
00:50:54,155.0423398 --> 00:50:57,425.0423398
It was his family that sold it to Walt and.
490
00:50:59,320.0423398 --> 00:51:09,280.0423398
Ron Dominguez went on to become a, president of Disneyland You can find that window, above the market house.
491
00:51:09,280.0423398 --> 00:51:12,580.0423398
So I just love that.
492
00:51:13,750.0423398 --> 00:51:26,700.0423398
I think it's such a great nod, not only to his contributions to the Disney company itself once he became an adult, but paying homage to his family and the land that they had, which is what created Disneyland.
493
00:51:26,700.0423398 --> 00:51:31,890.0423398
So I have a link, um, it's just the Wikipedia link that I'm gonna put into the show notes.
494
00:51:31,890.0423398 --> 00:51:36,690.0423398
If you want to know more of the windows, like I said, there's over 80 tribute windows.
495
00:51:37,110.0423398 --> 00:51:38,430.0423398
I'm not gonna go through all 80.
496
00:51:38,920.0423398 --> 00:51:42,850.0423398
But if you wanna know more about those, click on the link and you can go check all of that out.
497
00:51:48,965.0423398 --> 00:51:54,245.0423398
As far as attractions go, last, but certainly not least, we have the main Street vehicles.
498
00:51:54,245.0423398 --> 00:51:58,295.0423398
So these operate primarily in the morning through the early afternoon.
499
00:51:58,700.0423398 --> 00:52:04,310.0423398
When the crowds are lighter and they can kind of navigate down Main Street in a little bit of a safer manner.
500
00:52:05,60.0423398 --> 00:52:11,100.0423398
So first up, we have the horse drawn streetcar, So this is perhaps the most iconic.
501
00:52:11,270.0423398 --> 00:52:22,580.0423398
Of the Main Street vehicles and it's pulled by real draft horses and the street car itself travels along the embedded rails from town square to Sleeping Beauty Castle.
502
00:52:22,850.0423398 --> 00:52:31,610.0423398
So you'll see as you're walking down Main Street, these trolley tracks, and that is where the street car clicks in and connects so that it stays safe.
503
00:52:32,340.0423398 --> 00:52:34,260.0423398
And then it's pulled by the horses.
504
00:52:34,530.0423398 --> 00:52:39,390.0423398
And the streetcar is designed to look like that late 18 hundreds, electric streetcar.
505
00:52:39,390.0423398 --> 00:52:43,710.0423398
But this one is powered by pure horsey power.
506
00:52:44,170.0423398 --> 00:52:51,10.0423398
So it was important for Walt to have one of these because he felt like it was a nod to that small town America.
507
00:52:52,60.0423398 --> 00:52:59,365.0423398
And fun fact is the horses, their names are often listed on the name plates near the station Now.
508
00:52:59,805.0423398 --> 00:53:15,325.0423398
Disneyland itself houses, 18 draft horses in total, so we have Bert, Billy, Holly, and Holly worked for Disneyland for 15 years and is now retired.
509
00:53:15,385.0423398 --> 00:53:17,125.0423398
And then we had Reggie.
510
00:53:17,220.0423398 --> 00:53:20,760.0423398
Also worked for 10 years and has been retired.
511
00:53:21,330.0423398 --> 00:53:30,120.0423398
Um, brother is, um, siblings with Reggie and brother also retired and they retired in 2019.
512
00:53:30,360.0423398 --> 00:53:33,360.0423398
We have Danny Lucky Lee Ducky.
513
00:53:33,955.0423398 --> 00:53:36,235.0423398
Eddie Finn and Bug.
514
00:53:36,355.0423398 --> 00:53:42,295.0423398
And the cool thing about these horses is they're often paired specifically with one another.
515
00:53:42,295.0423398 --> 00:53:46,975.0423398
So for example, Finn and Bug will often be paired together.
516
00:53:47,155.0423398 --> 00:53:51,115.0423398
I would just assume that they just work really well together and they know each other.
517
00:53:51,425.0423398 --> 00:54:04,555.0423398
Those horses, when they are not working, they are housed at the Disneyland ranch and, they're just pampered and very well taken care of.
518
00:54:07,570.0423398 --> 00:54:16,810.0423398
So on any given day, about four of the horses are active in the park with two at a time, and they work shifts that are about two to three hours in length.
519
00:54:17,990.0423398 --> 00:54:24,980.0423398
After the horse-drawn street cart, we have the fire engine, the motorized one, which we kind of already talked about.
520
00:54:25,250.0423398 --> 00:54:39,40.0423398
So that was added to the parks in 1958 and, designed by Imagineer Bob Gerr, it's that bright red open air guests can really ride in, in this fire engine and actually they can ride in.
521
00:54:39,295.0423398 --> 00:54:56,645.0423398
Any of the Main Street vehicles it replaced the horse drawn fire wagon that now, like we said before, lives there in the firehouse and Walt himself often drove this specific vehicle down Main Street before the parked opened.
522
00:54:56,645.0423398 --> 00:54:59,15.0423398
It was his way of kind of getting around quickly.
523
00:54:59,495.0423398 --> 00:55:12,245.0423398
Third on our list for the Main Street vehicles is we have the omnibus, and that's a double decker bus that's modeled after 1910s motor buses, and guests can ride on the open top deck for great Main Street views.
524
00:55:12,700.0423398 --> 00:55:20,540.0423398
Especially magical early in the morning when the park is still waking up, it's calm, it's quiet, it's cool.
525
00:55:20,700.0423398 --> 00:55:26,910.0423398
It's one of my favorite of the street cars and I definitely love riding up top.
526
00:55:26,910.0423398 --> 00:55:31,410.0423398
You just get to see such a great view of the parks and of Main Street.
527
00:55:31,560.0423398 --> 00:55:35,700.0423398
And of course, the omnibus was built by Bob Ger and his team.
528
00:55:36,445.0423398 --> 00:55:49,495.0423398
Then we have the horseless carriage, and that is really a nine early 19 hundreds style motorcar, and it's all authentic reproductions, and they look like they belong in a Norman Rockwell painting.
529
00:55:49,495.0423398 --> 00:55:53,755.0423398
And each one of 'em has their own color scheme and it has that little.
530
00:55:53,930.0423398 --> 00:55:55,190.0423398
Beep horn.
531
00:55:55,250.0423398 --> 00:56:06,890.0423398
Um, so very iconic and they all run on clean burning fuel, so usually propane or biodiesel blends, which keeps the air there on Main Street, nice and clean.
532
00:56:07,10.0423398 --> 00:56:08,690.0423398
And then we have the Jitney.
533
00:56:08,990.0423398 --> 00:56:13,850.0423398
And the Jitney is a smaller, open aired motor car that resembles an early jitney cab.
534
00:56:14,30.0423398 --> 00:56:14,870.0423398
It seats about.
535
00:56:14,985.0423398 --> 00:56:23,535.0423398
Six to eight people and it's got a little canopy roof and these cute brass details, it's not as common as the omnibus or fire engine.
536
00:56:23,535.0423398 --> 00:56:27,945.0423398
So it's not out like all the time, but it is still part of the rotation.
537
00:56:28,545.0423398 --> 00:56:34,195.0423398
And I personally think I've not done all of the main street vehicles.
538
00:56:34,970.0423398 --> 00:56:42,650.0423398
I actually, now that I think about it, I think I've only ever personally ridden on the horse-drawn street cart and the omnibus.
539
00:56:42,680.0423398 --> 00:56:48,710.0423398
I don't know if I've done the other three, so I'm gonna have to add those to my to-do list for sure.
540
00:56:48,950.0423398 --> 00:56:53,780.0423398
So the cool thing about these vehicles is they all travel one way from town square.
541
00:56:53,785.0423398 --> 00:56:59,270.0423398
So if you want to hop on one of these, you can get on there at Town Square.
542
00:56:59,540.0423398 --> 00:57:08,550.0423398
That's kind of between, The Opera House and city hall, and then they take you all the way down to the castle and you loop back around.
543
00:57:08,620.0423398 --> 00:57:18,550.0423398
They operate, like I said, only the first few hours of the day, and the drivers are actually part of the Main Street operations team and they're often trained storytellers who love.
544
00:57:18,950.0423398 --> 00:57:20,990.0423398
To share trivia as they drive.
545
00:57:20,990.0423398 --> 00:57:30,380.0423398
So, you know, you get to sit back, relax, take in the view and the ambiance of Main Street, while also learning a little bit of cool Disney trivia.
546
00:57:31,700.0423398 --> 00:57:40,730.0423398
And these were really important to Walt because he felt like the, the vehicles were not just a ride, right? But they, they were part of the show.
547
00:57:41,515.0423398 --> 00:57:44,35.0423398
They were the living, moving scenery.
548
00:57:44,35.0423398 --> 00:57:51,865.0423398
They were bringing Main Street to life and making it feel more like an authentic hometown city would.
549
00:57:52,525.0423398 --> 00:58:03,415.0423398
So if you are ever on Main Street and you're looking for something fun and different to do, boy, I highly recommend checking out Main Street vehicles.
550
00:58:10,614.0423398 --> 00:58:11,214.0423398
All right.
551
00:58:11,334.0423398 --> 00:58:12,924.0423398
Now let's go shopping.
552
00:58:13,434.0423398 --> 00:58:21,864.0423398
We talked earlier about some of the cool shops that, uh, line the streets of Main Street in the yester years, but let's talk about what is there currently.
553
00:58:22,554.0423398 --> 00:58:28,704.0423398
So there's the Emporium that's at the very beginning of Main Street, and that is one of the largest stores on Main Street.
554
00:58:28,704.0423398 --> 00:58:34,794.0423398
And it just features a wide selection of Disney merchandise, including apparel, toys, souvenirs.
555
00:58:35,364.0423398 --> 00:58:37,44.0423398
We also have Disneyana.
556
00:58:37,104.0423398 --> 00:58:45,224.0423398
And Disneyana is a shop offering collectible, Disney art limited edition prints and vintage inspired merchandise.
557
00:58:45,624.0423398 --> 00:58:48,834.0423398
We have Candy Palace and Candy Kitchen.
558
00:58:48,904.0423398 --> 00:59:00,424.0423398
And that is a yummy little candy shop where you can watch homemade treats being made, including caramel, apples, fudge, saltwater taffy, um, so you can watch it being made.
559
00:59:00,424.0423398 --> 00:59:05,464.0423398
And then you can also get all of your little sweet treats there at the Candy Palace.
560
00:59:05,464.0423398 --> 00:59:15,634.0423398
And candy kitchen there is the China closet, and this is just a tiny little area, um, but it's a boutique offering.
561
00:59:15,634.0423398 --> 00:59:20,14.0423398
Fine China, porcelain figures and elegant home decor.
562
00:59:20,254.0423398 --> 00:59:26,434.0423398
It's one of those you walk in, I walk in, I put my hands in my pocket so I don't break anything.
563
00:59:27,424.0423398 --> 00:59:33,454.0423398
It's a fun little place to go in and check out just some of the cool little things that they have in there.
564
00:59:33,794.0423398 --> 00:59:44,954.0423398
There's also crystal arts and that is another shop showcasing exquisite glass art, including hand-blown glass pieces and you can do personalized gifts there.
565
00:59:45,234.0423398 --> 00:59:51,754.0423398
Another place where it's one of those look, don't touch for me, but it's always really cool to see what they come up with.
566
00:59:51,754.0423398 --> 00:59:55,804.0423398
And everything in there is just so pretty and sparkly and shiny.
567
00:59:56,174.0423398 --> 00:59:58,754.0423398
It's such a fun place to go in and check out.
568
00:59:58,754.0423398 --> 01:00:01,424.0423398
So then we have the Main Street Magic Shop.
569
01:00:01,784.0423398 --> 01:00:09,464.0423398
So that's a whimsical store offering magic tricks, cute little novelty items, and a variety of magical merchandise.
570
01:00:10,124.0423398 --> 01:00:11,474.0423398
Then we have the Disney clothier.
571
01:00:12,659.0423398 --> 01:00:16,679.0423398
And that is a boutique featuring vintage inspired apparel.
572
01:00:16,889.0423398 --> 01:00:23,309.0423398
You've got your hats and dresses and accessories, so just some cute Disney clothing there.
573
01:00:23,669.0423398 --> 01:00:36,299.0423398
You also have the main street pin shop, and so if you are a pin collector or looking to get into PIN collecting, that's a nice little haven for you to go check out.
574
01:00:36,689.0423398 --> 01:00:39,179.0423398
They also have lanyards there that you can buy.
575
01:00:39,669.0423398 --> 01:00:48,69.0423398
We also have the 20th Century Music Company, so it's a shop offering, Disney soundtracks, CDs, vinyl records.
576
01:00:48,69.0423398 --> 01:00:50,849.0423398
If you're really into that, you could go in.
577
01:00:50,849.0423398 --> 01:00:54,419.0423398
That's a great place to get some souvenirs or collectible items.
578
01:00:55,874.0423398 --> 01:01:01,4.0423398
We also have the Mad Hatter that's kind of located right next door to the Opera House.
579
01:01:01,4.0423398 --> 01:01:05,264.0423398
And it's just what it sounds, it's all hats and ears.
580
01:01:05,424.0423398 --> 01:01:11,824.0423398
You can actually go in there if you wanna get some things embroidered, or they also, I believe do clothing embroidery too.
581
01:01:11,824.0423398 --> 01:01:17,634.0423398
So if you find like a shirt or a sweatshirt or something, you can take it in there and they can, embroider it that way.
582
01:01:18,84.0423398 --> 01:01:24,204.0423398
There's new century jewelry, so some, some fine pretty jewelry.
583
01:01:24,204.0423398 --> 01:01:28,944.0423398
I also believe that there's a Pandora if you're into Pandora.
584
01:01:28,944.0423398 --> 01:01:35,724.0423398
So if you want something that's a little bit nicer in jewelry, you can stop by a new Century jewelry that's located there on Main Street.
585
01:01:36,504.0423398 --> 01:01:39,984.0423398
And then I think a lot of people know about this one, the Silhouette Studio.
586
01:01:40,174.0423398 --> 01:01:47,584.0423398
You can pop in there and have a silhouette of yourself done, or it's also fun to just watch people have theirs done.
587
01:01:47,884.0423398 --> 01:01:50,164.0423398
Um, kind of cool to see the process.
588
01:01:50,314.0423398 --> 01:02:00,674.0423398
Another great option for souvenirs, right? Then another cool one is at the very end of Main Street is Plaza Point, and that is a Christmas shop.
589
01:02:00,674.0423398 --> 01:02:05,534.0423398
So all of your little Christmas ornament desires.
590
01:02:05,974.0423398 --> 01:02:11,734.0423398
Disney inspired, just live right there at the Plaza shop, and that is year round.
591
01:02:12,374.0423398 --> 01:02:17,144.0423398
The futurity shop is also there on Main Street.
592
01:02:17,174.0423398 --> 01:02:21,944.0423398
Again, just kind of more, um, Disneyland merchandise type thing.
593
01:02:21,944.0423398 --> 01:02:26,984.0423398
So the cool thing about all of these shops is they are actually all connected.
594
01:02:27,584.0423398 --> 01:02:37,549.0423398
So on either side of Main Street, if you're on the left side of Main Street, you can first walk into the Emporium and you can make your way all the way through to the very end.
595
01:02:38,729.0423398 --> 01:02:43,459.0423398
Of the shops on Main Street, that kicks you out right around, refreshment Corner.
596
01:02:43,639.0423398 --> 01:02:50,599.0423398
But you can go through all of those shops that I just mentioned on the left side and stay inside.
597
01:02:50,689.0423398 --> 01:02:56,209.0423398
Um, it's kind of nice 'cause then you're not having to pop in and out on Main Street and kind of deal with crowds that way.
598
01:02:56,489.0423398 --> 01:02:59,549.0423398
Also when it's a hot day, that's a great place.
599
01:02:59,549.0423398 --> 01:03:02,999.0423398
Like let's just walk through the stores and stay cool.
600
01:03:03,329.0423398 --> 01:03:10,49.0423398
Now if you're on the right side of the street, you're going to walk into.
601
01:03:10,559.0423398 --> 01:03:11,759.0423398
Now I'm trying to think of it.
602
01:03:31,29.0423398 --> 01:03:40,819.0423398
Now, if you're on the right side of the street, if you walk in, into the Disney Showcase, and that will actually take you all the way down through Main Street.
603
01:03:40,819.0423398 --> 01:03:43,189.0423398
I've said it before and I'll say it again.
604
01:03:43,219.0423398 --> 01:03:47,389.0423398
That Main Street is most definitely one of my favorite lands.
605
01:03:47,389.0423398 --> 01:03:53,869.0423398
I feel like there are so many things to do there that aren't necessarily ride focused.
606
01:03:53,869.0423398 --> 01:03:58,819.0423398
The thing that I love the most about Main Street though is that you can just really take your time.
607
01:03:58,819.0423398 --> 01:04:01,739.0423398
It's a place, to go relax.
608
01:04:02,19.0423398 --> 01:04:03,909.0423398
It's great first thing in the morning.
609
01:04:03,909.0423398 --> 01:04:05,319.0423398
I personally love it.
610
01:04:05,319.0423398 --> 01:04:06,429.0423398
First thing in the morning.
611
01:04:07,239.0423398 --> 01:04:11,319.0423398
I love to go and watch all of the performers when they come out.
612
01:04:11,739.0423398 --> 01:04:13,59.0423398
I love to have.
613
01:04:13,114.0423398 --> 01:04:23,874.0423398
Breakfast down there and later in the day, I like to come back and go through the shops, go see the Walt Disney Show or the Lincoln Show.
614
01:04:23,904.0423398 --> 01:04:27,264.0423398
They have some of the best air conditioning there in Main Street.
615
01:04:27,574.0423398 --> 01:04:29,14.0423398
But it's just such a fun place.
616
01:04:29,14.0423398 --> 01:04:35,764.0423398
It, it's unique, it's different and it's definitely a place that I would not skip on my trip.
617
01:04:35,814.0423398 --> 01:04:49,114.0423398
You might skip Main Street as you just simply walk through, right? Like people I think can just see it as a place to get from point A, which is the entrance of the gates to point B, which would be the castle, and then onto the different lands.
618
01:04:49,114.0423398 --> 01:04:51,844.0423398
But Main Street is full of so many cool things.
619
01:04:51,844.0423398 --> 01:04:59,344.0423398
I have literally spent many a trip, just hours down there if you are into all of those small details, just being able to.
620
01:05:00,329.0423398 --> 01:05:10,349.0423398
Go down the street and look at all of those windows that we talked about maybe you Google them and like research them a little bit or just to kind of see the cool play on words that you see there.
621
01:05:10,529.0423398 --> 01:05:14,219.0423398
All of the small little details in the architecture.
622
01:05:14,559.0423398 --> 01:05:16,719.0423398
And of course enjoying those main street.
623
01:05:16,754.0423398 --> 01:05:20,594.0423398
Vehicles and then the attractions, like the cinema or the great moments with Mr.
624
01:05:20,594.0423398 --> 01:05:23,264.0423398
Lincoln or the Walt Disney's a magical life.
625
01:05:23,514.0423398 --> 01:05:30,214.0423398
Going in and checking out the fire station and just looking at all of those details, like, it's just, there's so many fun things to do.
626
01:05:31,384.0423398 --> 01:05:39,94.0423398
Walking through the shops, looking at all of the pieces in the jewelry shop or in the China shop or even the, um, crystal arts.
627
01:05:39,94.0423398 --> 01:05:45,154.0423398
That's a lot of fun going into the music store and looking at all of the cool retro things that they have there.
628
01:05:45,154.0423398 --> 01:05:48,154.0423398
So Main Street is chockfull of lots of fun.
629
01:05:48,154.0423398 --> 01:05:52,24.0423398
So my number one tip for Main Street is don't skip it.
630
01:05:52,334.0423398 --> 01:05:54,404.0423398
It's okay to kind of take your time.
631
01:05:55,124.0423398 --> 01:05:57,434.0423398
And maybe you check some things out at the beginning of the day.
632
01:05:57,734.0423398 --> 01:06:04,424.0423398
Maybe you check some things out in the middle of the day when it's getting a little hot and you need something that's a bit more low key and relaxing.
633
01:06:04,704.0423398 --> 01:06:16,294.0423398
And then of course, at the end of the night, main Street is just absolutely gorgeous lit up with all of those lights, and just such a charming and enc chanting place to be and walk around and check things out in that way.
634
01:06:16,684.0423398 --> 01:06:18,844.0423398
So that would be my, my number one tip.
635
01:06:19,79.0423398 --> 01:06:23,279.0423398
For enjoying Main Street is to simply enjoy Main Street.
636
01:06:23,279.0423398 --> 01:06:24,604.0423398
Don't skip it at all.
637
01:06:25,987.8053607 --> 01:06:29,437.8053607
That's a wrap on our walk down Main Street, USA.
638
01:06:29,587.8053607 --> 01:06:31,87.8053607
At least for today.
639
01:06:31,327.8053607 --> 01:06:50,257.8053607
We've explored the attractions that bring this charming street to life, but there's so much more to discover in our next episode, we'll turn our attention to the entertainment that fills Main Street from the Dapper Dans to the marching bands, the parades, and all the little magic moments that make the street sing.

643
01:07:10,687.8053607 --> 01:07:19,837.8053607

644
01:07:20,317.8053607 --> 01:07:27,667.8053607
