Nel corso del ‘lungo Ottocento’ Napoli e i suoi dintorni erano una tappa fissa dei viaggi del Grand Tour europeo. Con il Vesuvio, Pompei ed Ercolano, Napoli era infatti una meta irrinunciabile per gli intellettuali e aristocratici provenienti da tutta Europa. Nel 1738 e nel 1748 vennero infatti riscoperti i resti di queste città romane, sepolte e conservate quasi intatte dall’eruzione del 79 d.C. A un tratto, tutto il mondo voleva vedere questo “fermo immagine” dell’antichità, una finestra diretta sulla vita romana. Oltre ad artisti e poeti, il Vesuvio attraeva anche scienziati, come il geologo catalano Carlos de Gimbernat y Grassot. Scienziato, esploratore e diplomatico, Gimbernat si trovò anche a indagare la misteriosa scomparsa di un ufficiale francese che si era addentrato in uno dei crateri del Vesuvio.
