Pick Your Flick

Pick Your Flick

Pick your Flick is a podcast about movies and friendship. Each episode, friends Bec and Liam discuss a film and share some personal stories. No genre is off limits, and films include a mixture of old and new. It’s basically a book club, but for films. Credits: we love our theme song-Electronic Rock (King Around Here) from Alex Grohl, thanks to pixabay.com. Other sounds from zapsplat.com and speechgen.io.

In this episode of Pick Your Flick, hosts Bec and Liam go head-to-head in a Bec Story battle. Will Liam be able to identify the films Bec describes in her unconventional, sometimes incorrect manner?

The hosts then dive into the unique genre of parody with a review of the 1984 comedy Top Secret. Along with guest speaker Ian, they dissect the quirky humour, clever scenes, and underwhelming storytelling that define this film, and ref...

This episode, Liam crafts a trivia game to expose Bec's poor knowledge and memory of film directors. But it's fine, it's not like we're hosting a movie podcast or anything...

Following last week's excellent film, this week the hosts discuss the not-so-excellent film The Dive (2023). Sometimes it's fun to hate! And to imagine alternate endings that could have made a bad film slightly more interesting.

The hosts play another friendship word association game to reveal Bec's a scatterbrain, Liam's a silent stumbler and they're both PC Tetris nerds.

This week we unpack the Academy Award winning film, Poor Things (2023). Outstanding performances by Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Defoe alongside beautifully scripted storytelling and cinematography make this one to remember.

As always, Liam and Bec have a quick chat about what they've been watching lately. Liam introduces a friendship word association game to remember some friendship fun times including falling on his head at yoga, too much vodka, clams, diarrhea and Mr Marshmallow Man.

This week we unpack Cocaine Bear, the 2023 comedy/horror (is it really a horror though??) in all of its glorious madness. We just can't get enough of this wild ride.

Your hosts discuss Liam's pick, the 1992 dark comedy Death Becomes Her. From excellent comedic performances to pettiness and plotting, it's an endlessly fun and quotable film.

Please bear with us through some slightly patchy audio in this episode - better recording equipment is on its way!

Bec and Liam unpack the 2006 Martin Scorsese drama, The Departed. With an all-star cast, excellent soundtrack and complex characters, there is a lot to like about this film.

In contrast, the film Liam and Bec tried to make in year 9 wasn't as good... the hosts discuss how they had the vision, but maybe not the skills.

    Ruthie's Table 4

For more than 30 years The River Cafe in London, has been the home-from-home of artists, architects, designers, actors, collectors, writers, activists, and politicians. Michael Caine, Glenn Close, JJ Abrams, Steve McQueen, Victoria and David Beckham, and Lily Allen, are just some of the people who love to call The River Cafe home. On River Cafe Table 4, Rogers sits down with her customers—who have become friends—to talk about food memories. Table 4 explores how food impacts every aspect of our lives. “Foods is politics, food is cultural, food is how you express love, food is about your heritage, it defines who you and who you want to be,” says Rogers. Each week, Rogers invites her guest to reminisce about family suppers and first dates, what they cook, how they eat when performing, the restaurants they choose, and what food they seek when they need comfort. And to punctuate each episode of Table 4, guests such as Ralph Fiennes, Emily Blunt, and Alfonso Cuarón, read their favourite recipe from one of the best-selling River Cafe cookbooks. Table 4 itself, is situated near The River Cafe’s open kitchen, close to the bright pink wood-fired oven and next to the glossy yellow pass, where Ruthie oversees the restaurant. You are invited to take a seat at this intimate table and join the conversation.
