(00:00):
Hey everyone, this is Pat Batty, Pickleball Today.
Today I'm just doing a very brief podcast on my own.
We're taking a week off this week, but I've kind of promised myself to at least do onepodcast a week for the 52 weeks.
So Mark's not here today and this is not going to be very long.
(00:22):
Just a quick update on things.
My injury last week, I talked about when I talked about the Wiley Coyote moment.
and it ended up to be a little more serious than I expected.
It turns out it's a, what's called a sports hernia, which means I am off pickleball forthree to five weeks.
Tough, that's tough, but that's the way it is.
(00:46):
Now, you gotta be cautious with these things because if you move the wrong way, it justsets it off more.
It's feeling pretty good right now, but I know that I have to be cautious, so I'm justtrying to be smart about it.
Couple other things, last week we talked about the, and in our reviews recently, we talkedabout the six zero quartz pickleball paddle that went on sale last week.
(01:10):
However, for the initial couple hours, the all discount codes that we supplied and anybodysupplied didn't work.
So some people placed orders without them because the discount wasn't massive.
But if you decided to hold off because you weren't getting the discount, you can do thatnow.
Pickleball today is our discount code.
We'll leave a code in the show notes.
(01:32):
Now, I recommended that paddle as a great beginner paddle.
And I also said, being I'm not quite a beginner, I would put a little extra weight on it.
I've seen some other reviews that effectively said the same thing since then.
And then one said, well, they wouldn't recommend it for themselves, but they'd recommendit for beginner.
Same thing.
So in my case, I would put a little extra weight on.
(01:56):
You can buy it.
little lead tape or weights on Amazon for like $10.
You just stick them on and you put them at the kind of the side positions of the paddle.
There's videos out there that talk about places to put them.
But I only did that because that would give the paddle a little more power.
(02:22):
Whereas it had pop off the face.
In other words, the ball would spring off the face.
but as you swung it just didn't have a lot of power because the paddle is very light.
So adding a little weight to it gives it a little more power.
We've got some upcoming reviews too.
We're still waiting for some paddles, but there are some other paddles that have come outthat are very impressive as one.
(02:47):
There's a couple paddles from 11624.
We're waiting for those to show up.
We will be doing reviews for them.
Again my reviews.
I'm I'm a little stuck.
can't really do anything myself, but maybe mark and Or I'm sure he can so when they showup.
It'll be him doing it 116 24 we do have a discount code already, but I do want to show youreviews But if you want to support the channel there'll be links in the show notes to buy
(03:16):
a paddle from 116 24 Especially their jelly bean is a comparable paddle to the quartz
Some people say it's even a bit better because it does have that extra bit of power.
So you wouldn't need to add weight on it.
A little bit fractionally more expensive, but not much.
And they do give a nice discount as well.
(03:37):
So that's going to be showing up.
also have discount or reviews coming forward for a couple of other paddles from Bread andButter.
And we also have some discount codes from some other value paddles.
One's Neonic.
They have one called the Flow.
They have a few paddles, but the Neonic Flow is apparently a very good one.
(04:00):
I don't have one.
We have the discount code for it, but we haven't received that one yet, neither.
So there's some coming forward.
As far as me playing, as I said, I won't be playing this week.
This is kind of the shortest podcast we'll be doing.
There's been a bit of drama in the last week with MLP.
Colin Johns came out with a statement.
(04:21):
Well,
copied a series of text messages that he put out, kinda complaining that in Major LeaguePickleball, well, he had a lot of gripes, but basically what we saw, and anybody who
watched it last week, he and Ben just didn't seem to be putting out any effort whatsoever, which my take on it was, if you don't wanna play, don't play, and then let...
(04:50):
open those spots up to somebody who wants to play.
He's getting paid a lot of money as is Ben Johns to be part of PPA MLP and yet if theysomehow feel like they're hampered because they have to play with lesser players then
don't play.
Open up those spots to other people.
I mean MLP is a team -based sport just unlike in any other team -based sport you may havethe number one draft pick but if you do you also
(05:17):
get the number one draft pick for your second choice or third choice.
So whereas in PPA, instance, Ben Johns always plays with Anna Lee Waters, in this case hedidn't.
Or in, now in this case, Ben and Colin got to play together, but they weren't veryinspiring playing together.
I gotta double check did they play together or not.
(05:39):
I can't remember now after a week.
But I think so with Carolina Pickleball Club.
But anyway, they just aren't weren't very inspired in playing and I noticed that when Iwas at Grand Rapids as well.
So if they don't want to be there, I would suggest they don't go.
MLP is a lot of fun for a lot of people.
A team based event is a lot of fun.
(06:01):
Gets some people that aren't as highly ranked the ability to showcase their play and evento showcase their play with better players.
Again, if it's two people are saddled with lesser players all the time or one person, itdoesn't really necessarily show off their skills.
You know when people great players play with me well they don't play as well or they maybut they may not get the results they're used to if they're playing with a great player.
(06:26):
Same kind of deal but it's a team sport and with a team you're with the team.
So again if Colin doesn't want to do it that's fair enough that's his prerogative but heshouldn't be taking the salary and then complaining that he has to play under the rules of
the tournament.
So that's my take on it.
I won't get into it a big way.
You know whether somebody showed his
(06:46):
private text message while he asked them to show it, share it with the PPA and then theytagged PPA and then other people saw it.
So, know, how that works, I'm not sure.
But my take is if you don't want to play, don't play, but don't take the money then anddon't complain about it.
They all are benefiting from the revenue that MLP earns or the revenue that PPA earns.
(07:11):
And they are in his case, he and his brother are benefiting well.
Ben is benefiting more than anybody else in Pickleball.
With a two and a half million dollar, I think he was kind of bragging.
Well, I don't know if bragging is the word, but mentioning that he was earning two and ahalf million dollars from playing PPA.
So you don't like it, then get out.
(07:31):
That's about it.
I'm sure they like playing in PPA because they get to choose their partners.
And when you always get to pick the number one or the number two player, chances areyou're going to win.
But PPA tends to be a little boring that way.
You know, Ben always plays with Anna Lee Waters when she's available.
(07:52):
Anna Lee always plays with Ben when they're available.
Anna Lee's not complaining.
And in PPA, neither one of them are complaining because that's how they go.
So I'm not a big fan of what he posted.
I won't, I'll just go on record saying that.
But that's about it.
So this week, again, I'm dealing with an injury.
I'm also dealing with my wife who I mentioned before is hospitalized with
(08:15):
We're getting prepped to have her moved.
And so that's taking some time.
For those of you who have reached out and mentioned Alzheimer's with me and given me yoursupport, I appreciate that.
All the money we earn from our paddle sales are going to support Blonnie's long -termcare, which kicks in as soon as she gets this moved on it.
(08:38):
And it's a few thousand dollars a month.
of unexpected, unexpected, at least as
a year and a half ago, unexpected expense.
Thankfully, we do have some subsidies here in Ontario, which makes it only 2000.
If you didn't have any healthcare plan or anything else, it would be like eight or $10,000 a month.
(08:59):
And I don't know, other than selling my house, how I would deal with that.
So anyway, that's it for me today.
I'm taking this week off.
We'll get some reviews out.
There will be links for 11 .624.
I would recommend you check out the Jelly Bean if you liked the idea of the, say the Breadand Butter Fatboy or the 6 .0 Quartz.
(09:26):
The Jelly Bean is kind of an equivalent kind of paddle.
A little bit more power than the Quartz and a little bit more affordable than the Fatboy.
So there's a lot of options out here.
We'll be doing full reviews of these paddles once we receive
With that said, I'm ending it today.
I just want to thank you guys for your support.
(09:47):
had, in the last couple of weeks, we've had so many new followers.
I hated the idea of taking this week fully off because of all the new followers.
So I'm going to post this even though this isn't our normal kind of podcast.
So thanks again.
I hope you continue your support.
We'll see you next week with a regular pod.
(10:11):
Until then, I hope you get to play some pickleball this week even though I'm not going to.
We'll see you later.
All the best.
Bye bye.
