(00:02):
Pat, are you on the injured reserve list?
I have been, Mark.
Yeah, I have been.
I'm starting to feel like I won't be now.
I'm feeling good.
We'll be hitting some balls this afternoon, I know, and we're gonna do some paddletesting, but I will be taking it easier than normal, I would think.
So anyway, yeah.

(00:24):
Thanks for asking.
How have you been doing?
I've been doing pretty good.
It's been a few days up north at the cottage with some friends and family.
And the girlfriend was in town.
We did some boating, campfire, s'mores, you know, all the good cottage type stuff.
So just got back from that.
It's the right time of year for it.
Thanks.
Hey, well, let's get going.

(00:45):
We got some pickleball to talk about.
I did a podcast last week without you, it's been a while.
So good to see you.
Here we go.
Hey, welcome everyone.
Patrick Baty and my pickleball partner, Mark Bittorf here for another episode ofPickleball Today the Pod.

(01:07):
Mark, do you know what episode we're up to?
We're up to episode 13.
13?
I think it might be 14.
I'll double, I have to double.
just I was guessing on the the spot there, so
I know I put you on the spot.
No, I think I did 13 last week.
So good.
Good stuff.
We're into month four and you know, it's going well.

(01:30):
Boy, the number of subscribers have picked up.
The comments we get, everything is like doubled in the last month.
So they say that with podcasts that they take a while and people see older episodes andthen subscribe and all kinds of stuff.
But we got some big stuff going on today.
Number one, you know what the big day today is?

(01:51):
Number one, we are giving away a paddle.
There it is, awesome.
We're finally giving away a paddle.
We've been talking about it for what, three weeks?
And then the last week I was going to and I forgot.
I did my solo podcast sitting outside, by the way.

(02:13):
And I think I even had a beer in my hand.
So maybe that's why I forgot, I don't know.
But yes, we are giving away a nice Selkirk paddle today.
That's why I am.
wearing the Selkirk hat.
Thank you very much Selkirk.
And we are going to be talking about some other paddles, Holbrook.

(02:38):
You've got some stuff to talk, well we're going to talk a little bit about playing outsideversus inside, what we like to do, why we like it, things like that.
And you've got some coaching tips Mark, what were your coaching tips on today?
it's kind of like, some dinking, at the kitchen sort of stuff, where to hold your paddle.

(02:59):
that sort of idea.
Okay, okay.
Well, with that said, let's get our, did we play our entry music?
I can't remember.
my goodness.
I did.
let's get started then.
So why don't we kick things off?

(03:21):
Why don't you start with the about playing inside versus outside.
Yeah, so now that we're like halfway through the summer, we both have had some indoorgames, we've had some outdoor games with friends and all that sort of thing.
So I want to just talk about what our preferences are versus inside versus outside.
I know for myself, my preference is obviously not a sunny day.

(03:45):
I like the overcast day with a light breeze if I'm going to be outside.
When you're playing in that sun and you're playing for a couple hours,
You really start to feel the sun, the heat.
You're sweating a lot more.
So I find my game goes down quicker near the end.
When I'm playing outside in the hot sun with no shade or anything like that.

(04:11):
Now I do enjoy the outdoors playing as well.
But if it comes to my total preference, I do prefer indoors because you can really dial inyour shots, you know, not having any sun.
Any, you know, wind and you can, especially somebody like me that plays a lot of thirdshot drops.
I like to, I like the indoors because I can just dial them in.

(04:34):
There's nothing affecting where they're going to land, how hard I got to hit them.
If I'm hitting into the wind against the wind, with the wind.
So for me, I'm become a little more pickier when it comes to tournaments.
Now, I like to play.
indoors on outdoor surface.

(04:55):
if the tournament, yeah, if the tournament doesn't have indoor, if it's indoor tournament, but doesn't have the outdoor surface, I won't sign up.
I'm not signing up for the hardwood basketball court type tournaments.
Once you get to the higher levels, that ball just skids along the floor and it's, it'slike impossible sometimes to, to play those.

(05:20):
what about you, Pat?
What do you prefer?
Well, you know, I think our outdoor season is so darn short.
I would say when it's available, I want to be outdoors.
It's only because it's so short, right?
We get into this dull gray, you know, getting into October.

(05:40):
Now, I played outdoors a bit last October, but certainly November, we're getting into rainand, you know.
coming weather, obviously December, January, February, March, at least in Ontario.
mean, there are places in Canada that you could play outdoors maybe over the winter, likeout in Victoria, things like that.

(06:02):
And last winter, you could have got away with it up here because we had a pretty mildwinter.
But I definitely like to be outside when I can.
I...
Don't mind if it's sunny, just like anybody, I'm not a big fan of humid, mind you.
So hot and humid is kind of miserable even outdoors, but I still try to do it.

(06:30):
know, sweating a lot is not necessarily meaning you're gonna be losing a lot of weight, but in my mind it means I think I am.
And so I don't mind working up a sweat.
I mean, sweating from the heat doesn't mean you'll lose weight, sweating from exercisehelps.
And I'm always a guy, I've literally fought weight since I was 18 years old and fought itsuccessfully about 100 times and then went unsuccessful about 100 times.

(07:01):
And actually, the last few weeks where I've been laid up, I actually really was carefulwith my diet and I lost weight.
So that's kind of neat.
But I like to be outside as much as I can.
I do wear sunglasses outside all the time, you know, in daylight.

(07:22):
Now my sunglasses are prescription distance sunglasses, so they're perfect for what I needfor pickleball.
They're not bifocals.
found bifocals, my regular bifocals I can't wear playing pickleball at all.
But definitely, yeah, outside is my preference when I can.
And then indoors, yeah, I like the indoor courts with outdoor surfaces as well.

(07:47):
Now, the tournaments I've played on have been your typical gym floors.
And yeah, like I'm not playing at a high level, so they're fine for me.
And Cambridge Pickleball Club, we're on a gym floor, and that's a nice gym floor.
I don't like those plastic tile.

(08:07):
floors, mind you, that they have at some places.
You know what I mean?
are...
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
No, I know some people that sell them, but they also do outdoor courts and build courtsand do the roll courts and all that.
So I'm not showing a bias against the companies that sell them.

(08:30):
I just think...
I prefer their other surfaces.
Like I played on a pickle roll surface.
Those things are great.
And there's another brand.
can't think of the brand, those are great.
But I do not like those plastic.
They snap together kind of like Lego pieces, right?
And I know the city of Cambridge has them at a couple of places and I can't stand them.

(08:55):
And they get dead spots and...
real weird bounces and if you fall on them I guarantee you're cutting up your leg andthings like that which I first day of the day I played I did that and so anyway yeah that
is true but definitely I like I just want to be outdoors as much as I can in in our crazyweather in Canada now if I was in Phoenix right now I would want to be playing indoors

(09:21):
True, it's like the opposite.
or Florida or wherever, California, nice mix, because there's some very temperate weatherthere too.
But boy, and I know some people that live in Arizona, but they leave Arizona for a couplemonths in the summer.

(09:41):
Or even work else, they can work from away, so they'll go somewhere else, even up toFlagstaff or something like that, whereas that's up at a higher altitude and it's cooler.
But yeah, boy, it's totally different.
We've got a lot of viewers in the States, and so we understand that our situation here inCanada is really different from yours.

(10:04):
It's been an odd summer, though, hasn't it, weather -wise, to hear, right?
Yeah.
it seems like higher humidity, which is probably a result of why we've got more rain andstuff too, like these storms.
So.
So I haven't had as much opportunity to play outside as I wanted.
And then, you know, I've been laid up for about two and a half, almost three weeks now.

(10:26):
So I'm really looking forward to playing you and I outside later today.
anyway, today one of the things we're going to do is talk about some panels we got from acompany called Holbrook.
Now you don't have any there.
I have them here, I believe, right now, Mark.
I think you got all of them at the moment.

(10:48):
Yeah.
and we're going to do some video reviews of these paddles when we're out today.
But Holbrook is a kind of a neat company based in the US.
I can't remember exactly where they're located.
I met them personally.
The folks at, I don't know if you can see this one.

(11:08):
This is called the Pro Series and this happens to be a 14 millimeter paddle.
and they have 14, 12 and 16 millimeter of their Pro Series paddles.
And this is one of their original paddles, well, not quite original.
I think it's about a year old or so called a Mav Pro.

(11:30):
And this is a 16 mil.
It looks thick, but it's a nice feeling paddle.
This is a fairly value paddle.
It's a $100 less discount too.
This happens to be an extended length paddle.
which is a shape I like.
I'm trying to get used to playing a wide body like the Fat Boy, but this is the shape Igravitated to right off the bat, although not necessarily the square top, more the

(12:02):
rounder, slightly rounder top, because my first kind of pro level paddles were from 6 -0.
But nice paddles.
We're gonna play them a lot this afternoon.
We'll do some...
videos about them but maybe we can talk a little bit about you you played them a littleand you know a little bit more about them in fact than I haven't because I haven't been

(12:26):
playing for the last three weeks so they have basically the pro series the 12 14 and 16when I showed the 14 here it's pink but they'll come in a white pink and blue there I
think a pretty stylish looking paddle their logo
It's understated and kind of, I think it's kind of classy looking.

(12:50):
Myself, I mean, we got classy, we are crazy with bread and butter.
are crazy style and then Holbrook is more of your classic country club style.
Yeah.
And then 6 .0 is a bit understated.
I think, and then Selkirk is very colorful now.

(13:11):
You've really gone into really, really colorful paddles.
So anyway, why don't we talk about these a little bit?
We'll start with, well, first of all, the MAV Pro is your basic carbon fiber paddle.
And it doesn't say what kind of carbon fiber.

(13:31):
16 mil carbon fiber paddle.
I'd have to check if it's thermoformed or not.
We'll do that later on today.
But this would be a fairly soft paddle to hit.
A nice beginner level.
I would think a beginner level paddle.
And at a hundred bucks or under a hundred bucks.
paddle for somebody that knows they're going to be playing a couple days a week.

(13:52):
would say that's a great starter paddle for you.
Yep.
yeah.
And again, I'm assuming it's multiple colors.
I think it is.
Yeah, three, I think it's three colors.
The pink, pink, white and blue.
Nice, they're all nice looking.
But again, that's a nice starter one.

(14:12):
That'd be fairly soft, good for resets with the carbon.
And it is a very gritty surface.
So you could still get some good spin with it, I expect.
nice.
hitting this afternoon.
Now the other three you've played, I have not really played much other than one day.

(14:33):
And I know the one day I played was one of the days that I hit probably better than anyother day.
Remember the day you and I were, we were playing some singles and some.
Yeah.
Yeah.
my goodness.
And we were hitting.
So you got a 12 millimeter.
That's different.
That's different.

(14:53):
Let me get.
So the 12.
So I'll run through the pro series here a bit.
So if we're talking the 12, that's a, that's for your banger.
That's your, the aggressive style player.
That thing is firm, firm, like a board.
I could interrupt only a minute, I'm going to do that because we only have one of us oncamera at a time.

(15:13):
So there it is.
Now I don't know if that video is backwards, forwards.
I don't know.
I'm looking at the label logo.
can't tell that comes out the other way when the video is up.
So that's what it looks like.
Again, same graphics cut.
The Pro series has this little red square around the logo.

(15:35):
And then so yeah, that is, as you said, that's a banger paddle, right?
So that's somebody that's playing short rallies.
They're looking to every shot is a put away.
It's going to take a while to learn the reset with that paddle.
It's great for singles.
You know, if you're a singles player, I would recommend that paddle to you.

(15:55):
Now, if you're, yeah.
And now if you're somebody that wants to just play doubles, then I would do the 16millimeter pro series.
I really liked that one playing doubles with.
I could reset from first hit like instantly was able to reset with that paddle.
I was working on placement shots.

(16:16):
No problem.
Great for somebody that hits a lot of third shot drops over drives, looking for placement, looking to move people around.
I would recommend if you're a doubles only player, I go 16 millimeter.
It's a great paddle.
And I'll just show it here.
Exactly the same look just happens to be a little bit thicker, right?

(16:40):
And then the 14 in between, that's an interesting one.
So the 14 in between is interesting.
I didn't really like it.
And at the end of the day, I probably would actually go with the 14 because I do playsingles and doubles and you don't want to have to switch between paddles.
it can be tricky if, depending on if you have a singles tournament coming up and you'reonly going to play singles for the week up to it, then yeah, you could go with the 12.

(17:07):
But if you're somebody that's playing singles one day and later that day, you're stillplaying doubles.
which usually I play singles and doubles in the same day.
I would probably just stick to the 14.
I was still able to do resets and learn the touch, but it just takes a little bit longeron your resets to get that feel down, but it has a good pop.

(17:28):
It has good pop to it.
Like I was able to put some shots away.
and I think this was the one I was using when I was playing so well.
By the way, the grit on this, can you hear this?
It's a gritty paddle.
Well, the others are too.
They're all the same.
But man, I can really feel it.
Now these are demo paddles.

(17:48):
Sometimes there's inconsistencies in them.
You know, like grittier on one side than the other.
And that's why they're selling them out for free to us.
But it's a tempting paddle for me, but I think if I was smart, which I'm not necessarily,it's definitely one.

(18:11):
If I was smart, I'd play the 16, right?
Excuse me.
14 is tempting for you.
Yeah, because you did like it.
You did like it a little bit there.
So yeah.
I was really looking, I am not a banger normally.
And boy, I was getting such good top spin with that paddle.

(18:32):
But I think when we were doing it, I wasn't really even trying any resets and things likethat.
So I was, I was excited about the power I was getting in the top spin I was getting.
But in, in, you know, think of the, it holistically.
in a game I think the smart thing and maybe I am smart because I think I would go with the16 as well.

(18:54):
Yeah, so I'm pretty pleased with these.
I'm looking forward to us hitting and creating some videos with them this afternoon aswell.
Again, I'm gonna have to take it a little bit easy.
I don't want to re -injure.
I've got a trip coming up in a few weeks and I think you do too, Speaking of.
I do have a cruise coming up.

(19:16):
I have one of my aunts getting married on a cruise, so a bunch of the families going on acruise from New York to Bermuda.
okay, okay.
I used to have to work.
you were talking about a cruise too, huh?
Yeah, I am on a standby for a cruise, believe it or not.
Now I am again.
I haven't really taken any significant.

(19:37):
I was stuck here for the last couple of weeks, not doing much.
watched more, more Olympics than any sane person.
I enjoyed it, but I would rather have been playing pickleball.
and then I'd had the trip to grand Rapids, but that was pretty much work.
So at the end of the month, I am on standby for a cruise.

(19:59):
And standby means I don't know, just like to standby flight.
I don't know if I'm gonna be on that cruise.
And it's a very interesting cruise.
I'm looking forward to it, but I don't know if I'll get on it.
But it meant, because again, as we talked about my wife being hospitalized withAlzheimer's, I'm by myself.
you know, I visit her, well, these days I've been visiting her at least four or five timesa week.

(20:25):
But she doesn't really know if I'm to have visited.
this week or last week or yesterday too often now the way you're all side was asprogressed.
But she does recognize me whenever, but I'm going to go away for a 10 day cruise just bymyself to try it out.
Bonnie never wanted to do a cruise and I thought I would give it a shot and but it's justby myself and so standby man.

(20:48):
I don't even have to pay a double supplement.
Or single supplement and by the end they have pickleball on the cruise so that shouldkeep.
Yeah.
So maybe if I get on, maybe we'll do a podcast.
don't know the wifi on cruise ships.
don't know.
Might have it might.
I might record some videos there versus a podcast and then just upload or something likethat if it's possible.

(21:13):
We'll see.
but also it's along the shores.
I go out from Montreal.
So, you know, my, my wifi on my phone will probably work.
for some of it unless they block it on a cruise ship.
don't know if they do.
Yeah, you should just get normal cell surface, I would think.

(21:35):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Unless I don't know if they block it, they might not.
I don't know.
But I could also upload when I went to shore at one of the various places.
This cruise goes around along the St.
Lawrence from Montreal, Quebec City, a couple other spots.
And then it goes all the way around Newfoundland, which I am looking forward to becauseNewfoundland, I've only spent one night in Newfoundland and I worked.

(22:03):
I flew in one night.
I worked all day.
I was done.
I went up to Signal Hill in St.
John's and then went to the airport.
And that's it.
I didn't see anything.
And my son spent the summer in Newfoundland last year, but he was working, so I didn't gosee him.
So anyway, I'm going to...

(22:24):
This cruise goes around Newfoundland and then it ends up in Boston.
So we'll see if I get on.
I hope I do, but I'm not counting on it because it's...
It's one of their few sailings where they circumnavigate Newfoundland.
So I think it's probably pretty popular.
Anyway, back to Pickle.
Back to Pickleball.
So let's see here.

(22:46):
What else do we have?
You have a good point.
They actually give a really, yeah, they give a nice discount, Holbrooke, 15 % discount.
These paddles go from $99 to, I think it's $149 or $200.

(23:06):
I can't remember for the Pro Series.
Let me just find that out right now.
One second.
I might as well just.
And the discount code, if somebody wants to use it, is PB TODAY.
So P -B -T -O -D -A -Y.

(23:30):
Yeah, and I'm just checking the price here.
Give me a break while it, or give me a second while it pops up.
I should have remembered this.
and the browser it's taken a while so I won't do it you would we'll put it in the shownotes and it'll there's links in the show notes too so it's PB today is the discount or is

(23:50):
the okay it's 149 us for the pro that's a good price for that that's a really good pricethe 149 us that's typical you know you're typical get into these paddles you know 160 180
200 us
series would be yeah, almost the 200 mark a lot of the yeah.

(24:14):
was 220, they've dropped it to 149.
And now we've got the discount of 15 % off.
So that makes these cool.
Now you pay for shipping for these, but the discount we give kind of covers, would coverthat cost.
So it's a pretty good value.
Those are US dollars I'm talking about, by the way.

(24:36):
So if you use our code PB today, good price, cool looking panel.
cool hitting paddle from the minimal experience we've had.
We'll throw up some more videos after we've recorded them too.
But I like them and I met the two pros that play two of the pros on the PPA tour.

(24:59):
Martin and Tammy Enrich play PPA and Major League Pickleball and they swear by them, sponsored by them, you know, so but.
But I really like them.
And when you're staking your career on a paddle, it's gotta be good.
And I do believe they are.

(25:20):
So anyway, so that's Holbrooke.
And we have not really spoken about them before.
So Mark, you have a bit of a coaching tip you wanna give us today or a little bit of alesson.
Yeah, it's kind of more like a bad habit.
The tip today is I've seen it a lot recently.
I've been doing a lot more lessons focusing on the kitchen play and strategies up at thekitchen and dinking and trying to be a little bit more aggressive with our dinks.

(25:47):
A lot of players have wanted to learn that.
And the biggest bad habit I see is literally when people are dinking at the kitchen, theyleave their paddle down at their knees, their waist level.
They'll hit a dink and they'll just stay at the waist, hit a dink, stay at the waist, hitat the dink.
And nobody brings that paddle back up to their ready position.

(26:11):
and they're just leaving themselves open for a speed up like a body bag like and
they're anticipating another dink.
They're exactly they're anticipating another dink and nobody is being prepared for thatspeed up or that, you know, that quick little off speed shot coming higher.

(26:33):
Now, a lot of times they get it, they might get a paddle on it.
But what they send back when they have to go from their waist up to here to then get apiece of it, the next one's a put away.
So the people that have been taking lessons with me lately,
is we've been learning a little speed up trick that kind of looks like a dink.

(26:54):
And it's just a little we call it like the the window wiper shot, where you just it's justa little quick little, you know, fast little top spin little shot just off a dink.
And it's just enough to throw somebody off that they're like, and you catch them andyou're just hoping the next one is the winner.
And so that's what I've been teaching lately.

(27:16):
Can you stand up and show us what you mean by that?
I don't know if you're in a...
But what do you mean by windshield wiper?
So it's it's kind of like just with your wrists.
So you're just going kind of just curving over the ball.
okay.

(27:38):
Okay.
Yeah, let's do it.
Yeah, let's do it.
Okay.
Okay.
because you take it from, you look like you're going to dink.
You just do a quick little whip.
It's kind of like a little whip and you're just throwing it at the person's body becauseyou're just like, you can see when you're playing that people are keeping their paddle

(27:59):
down and it's not up.
And sometimes you might hit them in the chest.
Sometimes they might get a piece of it.
And then the next one, just an easy put away.
So players have got to remember when they dink to finish.
up in your ready position.
So that ready position is 11 o 'clock.
If you're a right hander or one a one o 'clock if you're a lefty.

(28:25):
So just getting that in your head, dink up, dink up, you know, so
You've got some more tips to go through, but I should remind people, please like andsubscribe and comment on our videos.
We're going to give a paddle away at the end of today.
Basically, people subscribing to our channel, liking our videos, commenting on our videos, get more opportunities to win these paddles.

(28:52):
Also, if you want to win a paddle, you can actually go to our website, pickleballtoday.co.
and go to the specific page called Pickleball Paddle Giveaways.
You'll see it on the website in the menu, but also you can just go to pickleballtoday .coslash win.

(29:13):
Very easy, W -I -N, pickleballtoday .co slash win to win one of our paddles.
We get way too, I'm looking at a basket here, Mark, without the top of my head.
20 paddles in it and you can see how many are in my back wall and I've got four on my deskhere.

(29:35):
So we probably have about 40 paddles.
So we're to give one away every two weeks.
And the first one, by the way, stick with me.
We're going to announce the winner here today.
We're going to name names.
so I hope this person is listening today.
But if, if you know this person,

(29:56):
Let them know that they should watch the podcast this week if they haven't seen it yet.
And also check their email because I'm going to be sending them an email.
And I don't know how hard it's going to be, by the way, to send an email to somebody andsay, we have a pickleball paddle we want to give you and have them believe us.

(30:18):
Yeah, I hate it when somebody's going to scan me with pickleball paddles now.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Anyway, we're giving it to them.
We're going to ask people to pay for shipping because shipping is our...
We paid for shipping for these paddles.
And in some cases, paid for the...
A lot of cases, we paid for the paddles.

(30:39):
And the paddles are all valued in the 200, 200 plus range.
So we ask people to just pay for the shipping to help us out that way, but that's it.
And the pals today are approximately $200.
The ones we're giving away today are one is about $200 a pal.
Anyway, back to your tips because we forgot to mention all that earlier.
So now I mentioned, I mentioned the ready position at the kitchen line is, you know, up,chest high sort of deal.

(31:06):
Now, once we move back close to that baseline, we actually want to drop our ready positiondown more towards our waist.
So that's when you're allowed to have your paddle down towards your waist is when you'reback near the the baseline and players are attacking you because anything
above your waist level at that point is going out and we want to learn to leave thoseballs to go out.

(31:28):
So your ready position does move downwards as we get away from that kitchen line.
But we got to remember when we're at that kitchen line, it's at the highest spot, chesthigh, ready to go.
Cause we also want to be able to attack too.
If they pop a dink up too high, we want to be ready to just attack and not have to movefrom the waist up.

(31:50):
And then attack, right?
So it's not always just defensive is keeping your paddle up.
It's also offensive opportunities come when you keep your paddle up at the kitchen line.
So that's where you win the point.
Yeah.
really good point.
Really good point.
What else do you have there?

(32:12):
I see something about calling balls and all that.
Calling balls out.
I've mentioned this a few times.
I want to keep mentioning it because every time I give a lesson and people are like, wewant to learn as doubles partners during this lesson what to do.
And every single person nobody calls their partner balls out.
They're just like, well, you're closer to it.

(32:32):
I thought you were going to call it and you're like, No, you have to call the ball out foryour partner because you want your partner to be able to hit the best shot they can.
and you want your partner to go for everything close to that line.
So I'm going to keep mentioning it.
Make sure your partner is always calling your out balls and you got to trust that they'regoing to make the right call and you just go for the best shot possible.

(32:54):
So.
That is a fantastic point, especially the part where you said, do you want your partner togo for it no matter what?
Right?
Not be watching it drop, hopefully going out and then deciding, shit, it was in.
right?
And which, goodness.

(33:15):
Yeah, that's a beginner error that to me that's happened a lot in my first six, eightmonths, right?
Hoping it's going out.
and it doesn't and then it's too late to swing.
So just go for it and let the partner worry about whether it's in or out.
Excellent.
Excellent.
You will make points with that tip, folks.

(33:39):
You will, yeah.
And I will too.
I appreciate that.
That's a really interesting one.
Go for it no matter what.
Yeah.
And I don't think everybody, I don't think many people do, but I love that tip.
That's a really, really good tip.
I like that a lot.
I'm gonna, 100 % like it.
And that's so easy.

(34:00):
Just do it.
Make sure your partner's paying attention to, you know, let them know in advance.
I'm relying on you to check the ball.
It's too hard for me to check them when I'm out.
Now, I find that, by the way, the tough ones like that are the ones at the baselinecorner.
And those are usually my hopeful, what I call them hopeful outs.

(34:23):
Yeah.
Yeah.
And then, and if it's in, you're screwed.
And I love the tip.
I love that tip.
On the side, maybe it's easier for me to call.
It generally would be, but I'll rely on a partner too.
I love it.

(34:43):
That's a great tip, Mark.
Thanks.
Thanks a lot.
I think that's it for your tips though today, right?
Is that it?
Cool, cool.
So the next topic you wanted to talk about is features.
you're thinking about joining a pickleball club, and this is irrelevant of the clubs we'reinvolved in, we're gonna do this in a way that is not biased in any way.

(35:07):
What are the things you would look for if you were actually gonna join a club?
Now, we should mention there are a few different kinds of clubs and certainly a wide rangeof prices.
play, one, I play at a community club, a community facility in Paris, Ontario.

(35:30):
They have organized play every morning that is actually run by a person that works for thecity.
And I pay an annual fee for that.
It's not much though, it's like $40 a year or something like that.
Then we have Cambridge Pickleball Club.
That is a non -profit club.

(35:51):
Every bit of money that comes into that club goes to pay, effectively pay the rent.
And we rent space from cities.
So that's part of Pickleball Canada, Pickleball Ontario.
That was our choice to do that.
And then, then members, so members join that very inexpensively and join the club veryinexpensively.

(36:12):
I think all told it's $45 for a year for all three entities.
And then they pay per play and I think it's $8.
But all that $8 goes to do is pay for the court.
And we rent that from schools and churches, churches in the summer and both on the offseason.

(36:35):
So those obviously don't have the facilities that a private club have, right?
If we were going to join a, well, it could be any kind of club, but things that we wouldlook for in a club.
Why don't you lead the way on it, Mark?
Yeah.
So we were talking about playing indoor and outdoor.

(36:55):
And so some clubs, even in our area, there's a club called graystone where they have abelief sits indoor and sits outdoor.
it's a private facility and it's definitely the higher end.
You know, they offer, you know, you get some more features like a gym inside.
You get a restaurant, you get a bar, you know, you get change rooms, saunas, you know, stuff like that.

(37:18):
and then there's, we have other clubs like court where we're at, we're in a domeessentially, and we have five indoor pickleball clubs, but, no other real little features,
you know, like there's obviously a bathroom and a change room and stuff, but, that's aboutit.
No restaurant or bar or anything.
So, it got me thinking like, what would you want in a club?

(37:39):
How many, how many courts, like if you're willing to pay a fee, how many courts do youwant?
You know?
Does ceiling height matter?
What do you think?
How many courts do you think would be a viable number?
I, if I were to start building a club now, I wouldn't probably go less than six.

(38:00):
I think you need at least six, ideally 12, 10 to 12, I think would make a good club.
because then you can host bigger tournaments.
when you get the 10 to 12, and you can get a lot easier to get all the different levels ofplay playing at the same time, instead of with when you only have like, you know, four to

(38:24):
six courts.
You can kind of like one night is this level of play.
Next night is this level of play, right?
Where if you get to that 10 to 12 court range, you can have the same night still have alldifferent levels of play, just separating on different courts, right?
So it allows people more flexible schedule, I would say that way.

(38:47):
Now,
there are some outdoor, there are not many indoor facilities like to that level around,
they're not.
They're starting to get built though.
They're starting to get built.
There's a new one that just announced in London, Ontario.
And I believe they went with nine indoor courts.
So
are some outdoor facilities.

(39:08):
Pickleball Hamilton has a great outdoor facility.
Off the top of my head, I think they have 12 courts.
Excuse me for a second.
I feel like that's the number.
Like if you could build 12, I think that's the number that satisfies everybody.
And there's enough to cover demand that there's not crazy weights.

(39:31):
You go to a place outdoor place that only has four courts.
You know, you're waiting 30 minutes in between a game.
Like it's a you get to those.
Yeah.
mean, I do like the idea of having indoor and outdoor.
I'd be like, if I could afford Greystone and it wasn't as far away from me, would gothere, but they have a big initiation fee that is out of my budget.

(39:59):
it is about a 40 -minute drive for me as well.
And yeah, and there's even what is it?
Is it Vernon BC that number one pickleball club last year?
I think in Canada, I think they have like 12 or so right?
I think there are 1620 I don't know what it is.
But like I've seen that club, obviously, I want to play there one day.

(40:20):
And it just looks like the perfect amount to satisfy everybody's needs.
an article about on our website about it that we wrote about nine months ago about them soyou can see the info about it.
Vernon, I always get the name wrong.
It's Vernon Pickleball or Pickleball Vernon.
can't remember.

(40:40):
But anyway, yeah, they won Canada's best pickleball club contest last year and really niceplace.
Plus,
It's big enough to do everything you had mentioned, host tournaments, referee clinics, juniors, all kinds of stuff.
So it's a wonderful, wonderful.
you know, like it's a yeah.

(41:00):
I think that's the other thing too.
Having that restaurant or bar feature helps with the club social aspect.
Like if you're somebody that likes to socialize, you know, playing a game with your couplebuddies and then having a drink right after and watching somebody else play, you know,
that's enticing as well, right?

(41:21):
So I think the new clubs,
If they're building them from scratch seem to all be putting a restaurant bar feature innowadays, it seems like.
there's a lot of revenue there, right?
When you think about it.
There's, I mean, there's franchise, like the Pickler franchise out of the US.

(41:41):
They have a nice model.
Rumor is they're building in Canada, but I haven't seen any evidence of it yet.
supposedly there's levels to be like up to a hundred locations in Canada, but still havenot seen the actual one officially pop up.
There's been a lot of rumors even in our area, but.

(42:03):
anybody from Pickler wants to contact us and let us know, we'll even have you on thepodcast.
We would love to know what's going on.
watched the major league pickleball tournament last week and it was at an indoor Picklerfacility in
in Utah and that's where their headquarters are.

(42:24):
By the way, the Holbrook paddles were from Utah.
said that earlier, Vicks.
Anyway, speaking of Utah, yeah, the Pippler headquarters is in Utah.
And again, a while back, somebody announced they were putting out, they were having, they've sold a hundred franchises in Canada.
My expectation is that's a master franchise agreement.

(42:45):
There have been none open.
We've even heard one maybe opening in our area, but we haven't heard anything about iteither.
So if anyone from Pickler wants to reach out, great.
But they seem to have everything that you've talked about.
Well, you mentioned pool, hot tub, sauna, cold plunge.

(43:07):
That makes me think of another company in the US that has, as far as I know, only onelocation in Canada, and that's called Lifetime.
Ooh, yes, yeah.
Yeah, yeah, lifetime is what I wish they they're around here.
They have a lot of the PPA tournaments and pro tournaments have been at lifetime inAtlanta and in LA and they're all over.

(43:36):
But both they have incredible, you know, like it's kind of country club.
Country club.
Yeah, beautiful indoor.
Yeah, beautiful indoor area, beautiful outdoor area, indoor pool, outdoor pool, the works, you know, it's just man, you know, and their pricing is up there, but maybe double what we

(43:59):
pay at court.
But yeah, they have double the facilities and that.
So if somebody could afford it and live by one, wow, if it was around here, I'd probablywork out how I could do it, I'll be honest, because I love
But yeah, I would love to have that kind of thing.

(44:22):
I don't have a pool here.
I don't have a hot tub.
We used and I used to have a pool that we downsized and left our hot tub behind and leftour pool behind at all.
It hurts.
It's stubby here.
And so anyway, lifetime again, lifetime.
The only one I'm aware of, by the way, is lifetime in Mississauga.

(44:44):
They have one.
And except, and it has pickleball, but it's in, I believe it's indoor and they don't havethe kind of all the country clubs thing, but they do have gym and things like that, maybe
an indoor pool.
So it's not as elaborate.
yeah, I like the idea of them with the one stop shop, right?
It's got your gym.

(45:04):
They even have daycare, I think, when you can drop off your kids while you go playpickleball or go to the gym.
Like, you know, if you're a family, like they, would, it's your one stop shop foreverything you need.
So, those are hard to not say to not sign up for, right?
But they could do come with the price.
Exactly.
Actually, you know, one of the podcasts I watch is Pickleball Studio.

(45:26):
And I think Chris Olsen, there's a member of Lifetime in Minnesota, I believe.
think that's he does some videos there.
Now he's doing some.
He's building a court at home right now.
So so he may not continue with his membership.
But that looks like a heck of a club.
And again, the ones I've seen on PPA, the one in Atlanta.

(45:47):
Wow.
Anyway.
wonderful places, but then you pay for it.
If anybody at Lifetime wants to reach us out and let us know any plans in Canada, pleasedo.
We would love to hear from you.
And again, we'd have you on.
Well, you know what?
We've got a big announcement to do.
And yeah, so we have a couple paddles.

(46:10):
I'm going to allow this person to choose from one of our Selkirk paddles.
And we have a couple of Selkirks.
I should have grabbed them.
One second.
Oi.
came out with these paddles a few months ago, so this is not old stuff.

(46:35):
This paddle has been hit once, this paddle has been hit maybe once or twice.
They are, I don't know, $200, $250 paddles.
And our winner this week, can you give me a drum roll there, Mark?

(46:56):
Our winner of this panel is Shirley Roche and Shirley lives in Newfoundland.
Congratulations Shirley.
Shirley's been a subscriber a long time and I know opening emails, seeing the podcast, etc.

(47:18):
So Shirley, I'm going to be sending you, if anybody knows Shirley, let her know.
that she won.
And I think she's with the East Coast Rock Pickleball Club because the form she submittedactually had club membership names on back then when we did that.
So that would be in St.

(47:38):
John's.
And so obviously live somewhere.
And by the way, she may pronounce her name Roche.
So anyway, surely Roche or Roche?
R -O -C -H -E, I expect that's Roche.
Anyway, St.
John's, Newfoundland area, surely I am gonna send you an email tomorrow.
I don't have a phone number.

(48:00):
I hope you get the email.
I hope you see the email and I hope you believe it's legit.
Cause we've got a nice panel, one of, and I'm gonna give you your pick.
Cause one's a wider body and one's an extended length.
both the same price, both the same value.
we want you to get one that you think you will play.

(48:23):
So I'm going to give you your choice of these.
And all we're going to ask of you to do is pay whatever the shipping is, which is, I know,$25 or something like that.
We'll see.
So Shirley, congratulations.
Want to remind anybody else, you want a paddle, we'll be giving another one away in twoweeks.
Maybe before, because I'm back.

(48:45):
We promised another one earlier, so we might even do another one next week.
And we've launched a contest on our website, in fact, that closes next week, but that onewill be announced a week later.
Go to subscribe or to get in on our panel giveaways.
Go to pickleballtoday .co slash win.

(49:05):
put in your email address and name, confirm your email address.
We don't want you to enter a bad one and we don't want our mailing list to be full of spamemail addresses.
So you gotta go to your email, check your email, you'll get a link, confirm it, and thenit'll give you more opportunities to win at that point by subscribing to our podcast,

(49:27):
subscribing to our video, Pickleball Today.
YouTube channel and various things like that.
So it's a gamified system that helps us keep track a little bit better than manually theway we've done in the last bit because we ended up having hundreds and hundreds and

(49:47):
hundreds of entries over the last few weeks, Mark, because our paddle reviews have beenwatched so much.
So for those who did, thank you very much.
Surely you're the first winner.
We will do another, I believe we'll do another one next week and we'll do another one theweek after that.
And after that, it'll be every two weeks.

(50:08):
So we'll get fully caught up to fulfill our obligation.
Now we're gonna pick the paddle.
even if you watch, I should confirm, because some people misunderstood when we do a FatBoy paddle review or a bread and butter, we're gonna give away a paddle.
We're not giving away necessarily that paddle.

(50:29):
we are giving away a pro level, know, kind of $200 level plus paddle.
It might be the Fatboy, it might be a different paddle, it might be a different brand.
But on every video where you enter, you're entered to the contest, but we're picking thepaddles every week based on what we got, you know, too many of or no use for because we've

(50:53):
done the reviews and things like that.
We've got a lot of paddles from a lot of companies.
If any companies want to send us paddles and we'll give you a little promo and we'll do areview.
We'd love it.
We appreciate that.
And people will get to know your brand.
You know, simply send us an email, patrick at pickleballtoday .co and tell us, you know, alittle bit about your paddle and what's unique about it, especially because we want to

(51:17):
know.
We don't want you.
just, you know, people.
having a paddle made in China and throwing a logo on it.
And it's the same as all kinds of others.
We want to review things that are kind of special.
So, Mark, that was a video.
We've done a podcast, 51 Minutes.
That's right in our kind of, we tend to evolve into this 48 to 52.

(51:42):
It's not like we plan it.
It's just.
we end up it seems like pretty much every week so.
Yeah, yeah.
So I thank you again, man.
I'll see you this afternoon and we'll hopefully get this published today.
Again, Shirley Roche of Newfoundland.
Give me an, send me an email.

(52:03):
You, you are on our email list anyway, and I will be sending you one tomorrow.
I hope you accept it.
I hope you get it and we'll work out the address, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
So we can send you one of these lovely panels.
These only came out, what?
two, three months ago.
So it's a brand new model.
And so we'll get that to Shirley as soon as we get to connect with Shirley.

(52:28):
Congratulations, Shirley.
Thank you folks for listening.
Be sure to go to pickleballtoday .co slash win to enter our paddle contest.
Subscribe on YouTube.
So, you know, follow our podcast, like our podcast, comment wherever you get the podcastsand we'll see you again next week.
Thanks Mark, we'll see you later.

(52:50):
Take care.
Bye bye.
