(Grimm’s “The White Snake” Summary Pt. 3) The servant, now on foot, comes to a kingdom where the king is having a contest for the hand of his daughter. The task: a ring is tossed into the ocean and if the servant can’t fetch it, he’ll be thrown in repeatedly until he does die. Gathered villager spectators grieve. One of the fish he rescued bring him a mussel with the ring in it, and the servant brings it to the king. The princess sees he’s her social inferior, and she demands a second task. Ten sacks of millet are dumped out into a garden, and if by sunrise all are not gleaned, he’ll die. By sunrise, the seemingly doomed prince, despondent, is shocked to see the millet gathered perfectly, by the Ant King he’d helped.
