Navigating Authenticity in Spiritual Healing

In this impromptu episode of Practically Magick, Courtney Pearl, a healer and Celtic priestess, discusses the importance of authenticity in spiritual healing practices. Originally set to address 'Inner Child Work,' the topic shifts to recognizing genuine healers, mediums, and card readers while avoiding common pitfalls. Courtney emphasizes the significance of personal healing, continuous learning, fair pricing, and the dangers of egocentric practitioners. She also discusses her experiences and insights from attending healing workshops and the responsibilities of being an ethical healer. (00:03):
Hello, witches and wizards.
Welcome to Practically Magic.
This is Courtney Pearl, your healercard reader, your Celtic priestess.
I am doing a bit of an impromptu to.
Podcast episode today because I wasscheduled to do an interview with one

(00:26):
of my good friends, but she turned outto be, um, ill today, not well today,
so we're gonna have to reschedule.
Uh, so the topic of the episode wasgoing to be Inner Child Healy Inner
Child Work and what that looks like.
And I am.
Uh, kind of geared up for that topictoday, and that is going to have

(00:50):
to be postponed to another day.
The reason I'm telling you thisis because I dressed up and
prepared for inner child, right?
It, we are kind of inan inner child season.
When spring arises, when summeris coming up, we are tapping into

(01:10):
the energies of our inner childthat wants to come out and play.
I was taking a class today, TiffanyLasik, who was the guest that I had on
my podcast for the episode on Alchemy.
If you didn't check it out, please go listen to that.
It's fantastic and fascinating.
I have been taking, um, a few ofher courses and she's incredible.

(01:35):
Her work in the Great Work and theNoble Art, the books that she wrote.
It's really inspiring, but.
Uh, I was just taking her class thismorning and she's talking about the
seasonal implications of coming intosummer and what it means to kind
of tap into that playful energy.
And, uh, and she was talking about how shereally doesn't like or resonate with the

(02:01):
word adulting, the way that people use it.
It's really, um, kind of afad right now to say, uh.
I don't like adulting or I'mso tired of adulting lately.
I am guilty of using that phrasebecause sometimes when things
just feel a little too heavy andserious, we call that adulting.
And she was pointing out that actually thedevelopmental stage of a adulting means

(02:25):
to have a voice and to have a choice.
And I. Just sitting with that today, justsitting with the idea that, yes, we're not
so much in an irresponsible, playful erawhere we get to just kind of go with our
first instinct and leap into activities.
We have to kind of think throughthings, take responsibility, take

(02:48):
accountability, more so when we'rean adult, but we also have so much
more choice and so much more of, uh.
Getting to plan things out, getting toconsider risks and consider what's ahead
of us and then decide what we wanna do.
And we have a lot morechoice than we think we do.
So I can't wait to play with thoseenergies a little bit with when I

(03:13):
have my guest who I will not revealwho she is yet, but when I have
her on, you will know and we willbe talking about inner child work.
But I will just suffice to say for nowthat those of you who are listening
to this in kind of the springtimeseason, or if you are, happen to be

(03:33):
in a springtime season of your owncycles, uh, independent of what's
going on in the, in the atmosphere,um, you know that you're in that cycle
because you are ready to kind of.
Play, you're ready to kind of not letthings be quite so heavy and serious
and just leap into something new.

(03:54):
Um, which is interesting because Iam gonna be using the storytellers
tarot today as I talk about what it iswe're gonna go into for today's topic.
And the card that I pulledis the page of hearts.
Very youthful type energy, andit is the helm, uh, of Hermes.

(04:21):
I can't remember what this iscalled, but it has wings on it.
In this deck.
This is what they have associatedwith the page of hearts or cups.
In this deck, it's called thehearts, but it's the emotional cups.
Element and it invites us to kind oflook at what it means to be kind of

(04:42):
flitting about in all spaces and energiesand where we're at with all of that.
Like Hermes likes to, um,kind of visit the underworld.
He can be on Mount Olympus, hecan be in the world with humans.
He's very useful messenger type energy.
And, uh, and this is associatedwith emotional energy, so it also

(05:05):
makes me want to tap into what itmeans when we are curious about
these kinds of metaphysical topics.
When we start diving into it.
Uh, when we look at becoming healers orwhen we look at engaging with a healer,
oftentimes we have these pitfalls.

(05:28):
That we can fall into.
And we've all done it.
We've all been there.
So I wanna kind of talk about thesepitfalls, um, because a lot has been
coming up in, as we've been shiftingenergies, shifting into this feminine
awakening that we're looking at inAmerican politics and everything.

(05:48):
There's a super grab of patriarchal, um.
Masculine energy.
It's like this last ditch effort tohold onto anything that looks familiar
to what we've had in the past fewcenturies or 2000 years and what, what
is kind of happening with the shifts.

(06:10):
Because with all of thisshifting energy, a lot of people
are waking up to this other.
Side to things alternative healing.
It's not all about logicand western medicine.
It's also an integration ofthe body, mind, and soul.
It's about how maybe there are otherrealms and other timelines that exist,

(06:32):
and we are becoming more aware ofhow that plays a part in our lives
and what happens when that happens.
What happens when that happens isthat people are often seeking things
like they're desperate for answers.
They might be going through somethinglike the dark Night of the Soul,
a wintering energy where they're.

(06:52):
They're going throughsomething really, really hard.
They're going through ego death.
They're losing jobs.
Their, their marriage is ending, um,really big shifts in their lives that
cause chaos, destruction, upheaval.
And when that's happening, you can get desperate.
You can feel like, oh, I'mgonna reach out to a psychic.
I'm going to reach out to a medium.
I'm gonna reach out to a healer.

(07:14):
I'm gonna try to, youknow, figure all this out.
And there can be pitfalls there.
And obviously being one of the peoplein this realm, I do energy and emotional
healing, spiritual healing myself.
I, I'm not here to tell you that thosethings don't exist or they're not real.
I'm here to maybe talk about theplay in when do you really know

(07:37):
when you're talking to somebodywho is there to help you, or they
are sitting too much in their ego.
I've talked before about this story.
If you've been listening to this podcastfor a while, you'll know this story.
Well, I talk about how I went to an energyhealing conference and was there really
primarily to learn as much as possible.
And when I was there, I went tosome classes on crystal healing

(07:58):
and some other modalities that aredifferent than what I do, and some
of those were incredibly powerful.
I went to a, um, a drumming session.
They came with a whole audience.
Full of drums to pass out, let theaudience have, and everybody was
drumming together and they talkedabout what that actually does to

(08:20):
the body, to the mind, to the soul.
It was powerful, but the people onstage really came with a lot of.
Intelligence, a lot of experience, a lotof, um, their own practice and purpose.
And you could tell they wereknowledgeable about the subjects.
And then there were some classesI went to where it was very

(08:41):
clear that the healer was or hadfallen into that pitfall of ego.
So they are walking around withtheir arms spread out and they're
just going, I participate.
Ancestral healing.
I call the ancestors to heal you.

(09:02):
But they couldn't give anymore information than that.
They had testimonials, people who hadcome to share their experiences and say,
I have healed through this modality.
I used to be an anxiousperson and now I'm not.
I'm healed.
There was no information being given.
There was no experience being shared.
There wasn't anything more than, look athow awesome I am because I'm a healer and

(09:27):
I can heal you, and I call the ancestorsin and then they heal You and audience
members are standing up and asking well.
How exactly and what does that mean?
And well, do you see theancestors all the time?
Are they here with us now?
What's, what does that, what does that look like?

(09:48):
And there wasn't really awhole lot of answers given.
And then I see a lot of people whoare really great at social media.
I'm not so much great at socialmedia, although I'm building
something of a following.
Um, a lot of people have calledme the no Bullshit Witch, so.
Just meaning that I tell it like itis and I'm very direct and I'm very

(10:09):
authentic and I just show up as I am.
And that doesn't necessarily condoneitself to a lot of followings, uh, on
social media because sometimes the most,so people who get the most following
tend to be radicalized in some way.
They're speaking, um, you know, very directly in a very, uh, one
side of the pendulum or the other.
And so it tends to be eitherreally harsh, uh, really, uh.

(10:34):
Can be controversial.
Um, so my following has been growingsteadily just little bit by bit,
which is totally fine with me.
Sometimes I get a little discouraged'cause I wonder, should I be
more radicalized than I thinkI'm who I'm, and that will
create the following it deserves.
So.
It just is what it's, my point isthere's influencers and people on

(10:56):
social media who, um, who are really, really good at selling themselves.
They're really good at promotionand marketing and things like that.
And, um, I've discovered that theyare charging excessive amounts of
money for workshops and retreatsand, um, sessions, readings.
Psychic readings, mediumshipreadings, um, things that they

(11:21):
are offering the world now.
It is not necessarily going to help anyoneto sit and piece out whether these people
are frauds, whether they are not doingwhat they say they're going to do or if
they're charging that amount of moneybecause they are so great at what they do.

(11:43):
But there is a certain energy that youcan tap into to understand whether or
not seeking somebody, maybe becauseyou are desperate for healing,
and you are desperate for answers.
Or wanting to become a healer yourselfand wanting to engage with that world,
and how do you do it authentically andshow up so that you are really providing
people with the right kind of servicethat will actually better their lives, or

(12:08):
if you are just in it for ego, in it formonetary gain or whatever it might be.
So I've come up with a couple ofthings to look for and to think about.
You are either a healer or you are lookingfor one in whatever modality that might
be excessive in unaffordable pricing.

(12:33):
Is a little bit of a red flag.
Now, I'm not saying that not everybodyshould be charging what they're worth.
I think people need to raise their pricesbecause they have, um, you know, become
so busy or because they have gained somuch experience in their field of study
that they feel that their prices needto reflect what they bring to the table.
And I don't think that'swrong necessarily.

(12:55):
Um, but I'll give you anexample of somebody that I came
across who was doing a retreat.
And it wasn't anywhere particularly,um, well let's say for example there's
Stonehenge, there's Sedona, Arizona, thereare locations in places where there are,

(13:16):
it is a, something of a pilgrimage forhealers because we know that it has a very
particular vortex of energy that's veryhealing and very conducive to healing.
So those places are more desirableand obviously more money.
To be able to go andstay in a retreat there.
The location that this person chosewas not any of those locations.

(13:36):
It was a pretty generic place.
Wasn't even a, a verytouristy destination.
Uh, for the most part.
It's some people go thereon vacation, but it wasn't.
It wasn't Hawaii is all I'm saying.
Okay.
So they chose a destination.
They also did not choose a place thatwas just, um, made for healing retreats.

(14:02):
Uh, so it would have a yoga studio, outdoor spaces, um, places where you
can do meditations and, um, connections.
They had booked a conferenceroom at a Marriott.
Okay.
Great for a conference, maybenot so much for a retreat.
And you could book rooms atthis Marriott for the weekend.

(14:25):
That was included in theprice of the retreat.
Um, and they were charging somethinglike $6,000 for a three or four day
retreat per person at this location.
Now, when you're looking atwhat you're getting out of it
and what that's giving you, uh.
The energy exchange just doesn't makesense to me, so that's a red flag.

(14:46):
When I say excessive, I mean it's justcompletely unattainable for the average
person to be able to afford that.
If they wanted, if they were seekinghealing, I think that people were
doing it because they thought theywere being promised things that,
that were gonna change their life.
I really do believe that what peoplehave to offer can be transformative.

(15:09):
I think that some of the workshopsand things that I provide and
have done are transformative.
I do believe that, um, I would not besaying that just to sell that to people.
I believe that it will help them.
If they're fully committed to healingand changing some of their core beliefs
and their energy into what it is theywanna align themselves with, I have

(15:33):
cultivated classes, sessions, um,private sessions, courses, classes,
workshops, the things that I provide.
I do not sell that just to be sellingsomething, and I try to make sure that
it is somewhat attainable for the price.
Um.

(15:54):
You know, for people to be ableto afford what they're getting.
A lot of people have told me I underchargeactually, um, which is something that
I need to work on in figuring outthe right, the right thing for that.
That's kind of every healer's, uh.
Sticky spot is how do I get this tothe masses, to people, because I truly

(16:15):
believe it to be healing and wonderful, but I want it to be accessible.
And then if I don't charge enough, people will not get enough out of it.
Because if you offer something like thatfor free, they're going to do it, but
they're not gonna get as much out ofit because they didn't invest into it.
So money in and itselfis an energy exchange.

(16:35):
So I'm just gonna say that couple ofother things is when you're looking at
someone and they are either doing a cardrating or they are, um, doing a healing
session with you, if they are using feartactics, if they are making you feel
ashamed of yourself or fearful, uh, aboutwhat you're doing or anything like that.

(16:58):
That's a red flag that might helpyou understand that this is not an
alignment with someone who is helping me.
And I'll give an example ofsomebody I was just talking to.
They said that they had a friendwho was not very religious or
spiritual their whole life.
And then, uh, all of a sudden when theywere a little bit older, then after
they got married, they decided to joina church because their husband's family

(17:22):
was part of this church and this church.
Was basically telling her the friend, like, you, you've done bad in your life.
You've, uh, you've participated insinful activities during your youth,

(17:42):
and therefore you must repent.
You must use this time that you'venow joined our church to repent
and repair and to, you know, prove yourself worthy and good.
Now that you are here.
That to me.
Um, and I am talking about a church, butI, that to me gives this, this, again,

(18:04):
shame lens to put over the, the way thatyou're viewing yourself, uh, whether
it's a church or whether it's a healingmodality or whatever it is, if they are
making you believe that you were, are, orhave been in any way bad, I'm using air
quotes for those who can't see the video.

(18:25):
If you've been bad, then that's notan alignment with a higher frequency,
um, of, of being able to move forward.
If I was creating a church, which I wouldnever do, but if I was creating a church,
I would tell members who are coming, notonly are you good, but you always were.

(18:48):
No matter what you've done, even if you'vegot, even if you've harmed people in the
past or you've engaged with activitiesthat have harmed yourself and your body
in some way, you are a good person.
You are good inside and out, andalways have been worthy of love
because I believe that that is ahigher frequency to come into healing.

(19:14):
Shame witnessing yourselfas you truly are.
So if you go to a medium, a card readeror a healer, and they are making some
very vague claims and they're verylike, uh, you will do this, uh, do
that, but it's like, could be anybody.

(19:37):
That's a little bit of a red flag.
I will say that when I'm doingcard readings with people.
I make sure that they understand I amcoming at it with a healing perspective.
So I am not a fortune teller.
I'm not here to do party tricks.
Um, and that when I intuitively readthe cards, I. I will only be as specific

(19:59):
as the cards will allow me to be.
And I will ask more questionsto the client than I will tell
them things because that is how Ibelieve that will help them best.
It empowers people more than it, uh,puts me in the seat of this is my ego
and my gift that is now healing you.
Um, and this is coming from.

(20:21):
I did do a couple of, and we'll probablycontinue to do a couple of live TikTok
card readings on my TikTok account.
Um, I had never done that before.
Uh, I have only just recently be, beenqualified, uh, to do live videos on
TikTok because you have to reach acertain point of followers or something.
Anyway.
I had no idea what Iwas getting myself into.

(20:43):
When people are looking at cardreaders on TikTok, wow, they are
really looking for fortune tellersbecause when I started my card reading,
I was giving a like generalized.
This is what everyone who might bewatching or tuning in would need to
know or would get some clarity onwhatever situation they happen to be in.

(21:04):
I was getting messages poppingup that were like, am I gonna
have a baby in the next cycle?
Are me and Johnny gonna get back together?
And I was immediately like, what?
I don't know.
I dunno.
That.

(21:24):
And then I thought, oh, people aregetting on TikTok to get that kind of
information from psychics and readers.
That's why they get on TikTok andthat's why they look for those people.
And to me, that's kind of the equivalentof the one 800 or one 900 numbers
that you used to call in the nineties.
It used to be on infomercialsat midnight or 2:00 AM and it

(21:46):
would be like, call Madam Serena.
She has all the answers for you.
And she would say.
You are going to have a baby and you aregoing to get back together with Johnny in
the next six months and all the things.
Now, I may look at the cards and say,I do see reconciliation happening,
but it may not be with Johnny.
And maybe that you need to reconcilewith yourself first, and depending

(22:10):
on what card is pulled, there mightbe clarity about a situation, but
I don't believe it's anyone's job.
Intuitive reader or not totell you how to live your life.
I've also known friends who are new atcard reading and they might have believed
that that's what card reading was.
And so they start reading cards andtelling people how to live their life.

(22:32):
You should get backtogether with your husband.
You should break up with your husband.
You should, um, put your kids in adifferent school, whatever it is.
And I feel like when the wordshould shows up in any form.
Like that, it starts tocreate a little bit of, Hmm.
I'm not sure that this is exactly the jobthat is happening here, so I wanna clarify

(22:57):
my role when you come to me for a session.
I am a priestess.
Priestessing is a service.
It is a service to you.
It is a service to me.
It is a service to source,so I am empowering you.
My whole goal in any session is for youto feel like you took the driver's seat

(23:21):
of your own healing and your own life.
I do not claim to be an authorityfigure on your life, and I feel
like if somebody was doing that,
that might be not authentic as a healeror as a. Medium or a reader even as a

(23:45):
medium who is somebody who, um, connectswith the other side, they have tapped
in and have experience in those giftsthat they have cultivated over time.
There is something to me, alittle not quite right about
people who say, I have a gift.
No one else has.
They might have a gift, but theyhave a gift that they've tapped

(24:07):
into, that they've practiced, thatthey've cultivated, that they have
gained wisdom and experience with.
But it doesn't make them anymore qualified with that gift.
It doesn't make them, um, let'ssay special or born special.
More so than you.
I believe that everybody has thepotential to tap into Clara gifts and

(24:32):
to communicate with the other side,or to communicate with their spirit
guides or angels or their divine higherpower, whatever that might look like to
each person and their belief systems.
I do believe that everybody has that.
I just think that there are people likeme who have devoted their lives to it and

(24:55):
that want to help and guide and facilitatewith sessions as part of their work.
This is why we do charge money forwhat we do, because this is our
passion and this is our profession.
But I do feel, uh, that.
Our job is to empower people andnot to, um, be the authority or

(25:18):
spiritual authority over people.
Because what would be the differencebetween that and let's say organized
religion that has certain people, usually men, usually white men.
In certain types of organized religion, which will say, I have the authority

(25:39):
in spiritual matters to be able to tellyou how to live your life the right way.
I'm here to help you figure out, askthe right questions, guide and lead
you using tools like divination orcard reading to help us get there.
Okay, so we talked about a couple littlered flags and a little bit of, uh, some

(26:02):
general information, uh, uh, about, youknow, what to rely on, what to look for if
you yourself are in training or in studyto become a healer to be able to give.
The thing that I would suggestmore than anything is, are you
willing to do the work on yourself?
Because if you're showingup and telling people.

(26:25):
What to do with their lives.
And, uh, oh, I forgot to mention thisone little thing about card reading.
'cause I, I said divinationtools are part, can be a
part of the work that we do.
Those take quite a bit of study.
Um, it takes quite a lot of timeto practice Tarot ruins, Ogham, um.

(26:50):
Divining Rods, Palm Street, all thesekind types of Devin Divination tools.
It does take quite a lot oftime and experience and wisdom.
Wisdom being the knowledge andexperience combined to be able to
use those tools and to help people.
So first you start doing it on yourself.
I mean, you start pulling cardsand studying and learning.

(27:13):
You take classes from Masters whohave studied and learned those things.
When learning the tarot, it's really.
Kind of important to learn.
The symbols, the history, the, the, the hierarchy, the
different types of, of cards.
What they mean, what do they meantogether, the different spreads.
There is quite a lot to it.

(27:35):
If you're learning ruins, like Nordicrooms, it's a complete language, a
complete language all in of itself.
So when someone starts dabblingwith it and then all of a sudden
they're charging money for it.
That's a huge red flag to me.
If you've not spent quite a lot of time, and I know with divination and things like
card reading, there isn't a certificationprocess necessarily to be able to go,

(28:00):
I graduated from the School of Tarotand now I'm a certified tarot reader.
I don't know if that'ssomething that actually exists.
I don't.
I don't think it does, but not sure it should.
I don't know.
There's a lot of schoolsof thought on that.
There is sort of an ethical practice,an ethical process to be able to
practice it and then offer it as a,

(28:23):
as a career, as something that you do.
So if someone is, for example, telling you that they read cards and
that they'd like to be paid for it,whether it's tips or anything, um,
or a private session, if they are.
Just reading the cards, they're just telling you what's

(28:45):
on the cart and that's it.
They're probably not ready to be chargingmoney if they haven't spent a good deal
of time with each one of their decksbefore using them and reading with them.
It takes some time to build arelationship with your decks and to

(29:08):
kind of infuse your energy with it.
Uh, some recommend you sleep with yourdeck under your pillow for a while,
and while you're learning it andreading it, there are lots of different
things, uh, that people suggest you do.
But the point is they don't reallyknow the deck all that well.
That's not super great, and if you havesomeone who's reading straight from

(29:31):
the guidebook that comes with the deck,I mean just right there in front of
you, just straight up reading from it,
they probably are not ready tobe doing this for a profession
and taking your money for it.
So I would be very stingy with thetips on that particular type of reader.

(29:55):
So with that being said, if you are areader and you are a healer, you do need
to make sure that you are willing andcapable and have been seeking healing
for yourself, seeking mentors whowill do the work with you, um, for me.

(30:18):
I did a year, uh, at theInstitute of Healing Arts.
And during that year program, you have three levels that you go
through and you have to processand be processed, uh, at least a
hundred times in that year or more.
And.
Like I said, most, some of that, atleast a third of it probably is yourself

(30:43):
being processed, having emotionalprocessing done with you so that you
can uncover the layers, layers andlayers deep within you that need to
be witnessed and need to be processed.
And so finally, if it feelslike the healer or yourself is
showing up in a space where ego.

(31:05):
Is taking the forefront.
I am a healer and I can heal yourather than, here's how I help
you to heal while you do the work.
It's hard work and um, and the healerthemselves is in a good, balanced state of

(31:28):
ego and higher self, if that makes sense.
I am thinking about this as Iam, uh, imagining myself being
one of the listeners here of thepodcast, listening to all this
and saying, is this making sense?
Does this feel like, um, I could walk intomeeting a healer or meeting a medium or

(31:49):
meeting a card reader, a meeting a mysticof any kind, and I would be able to tell.
Trust your instincts.
I think when you meet people, you knowif they're authentic or if they're
just selling you something, if theyreally wanna help you, if they have
done the work of helping themselvesand healing themselves, I think that

(32:12):
people can read energies far betterthan they even know that they can.
So remember you yourself.
Just as a human being walking the earth, you can tap into your intuition and you
can trust your intuitive self to tellyou whether or not the person you're

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

On Purpose with Jay Shetty

I’m Jay Shetty host of On Purpose the worlds #1 Mental Health podcast and I’m so grateful you found us. I started this podcast 5 years ago to invite you into conversations and workshops that are designed to help make you happier, healthier and more healed. I believe that when you (yes you) feel seen, heard and understood you’re able to deal with relationship struggles, work challenges and life’s ups and downs with more ease and grace. I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
