QN004: Racist Policies and the German self ID Law
Disclaimer: This episode has been recorded shortly before the current events in Syria, namely, the ousting of Bashar al Assad and the subsequent declarations of the German authorities.
Today's episode is all about migration, racism and German trans, inter and non-binary legislation. We discuss how the self ID law slots into already existing racist discrimination, practices and structures, how not even the minister for family affairs, Lisa Paus, get’s what the law is about and why it’s effectively nothing but a smoke screen instead of an improvement for migrants. As most people can imagine, there is a lot to talk about, so this episode lays more of a solid framework than a nitty gritty detailed coverage of everything possible with the German self ID law.

Since November 1, 2024, the new Selbstbestimmungsgesetz (Self-Determination Act) has been in force in Germany, which is intended to facilitate the change of name and gender entries for trans*, inter* and non-binary (TIN*) people. Contrary to popular belief that this will finally settle the vexed issue of gender self-determination and take it off the table, this law actually verschlimmbessert the situation of TIN* people in Germany.
Queerocracy Now! is our response to this law in which we critique, comment on and elaborate on the connections between the Self-Determination Act, legislation and society from a solid left-radical perspective. Our fight is not over yet, but must be continued in a consistent, intersectional and queer feminist manner, also in this podcast. For this reason, we release new episodes every two weeks in German and English, every two weeks.
