(00:00):
In the late nineties in Berkeley,California, three junior
high students became friends.
Moving to la.
In 2000, they decided to form a comedytrio after creating several short films,
they signed to Saturday Night Live, wherethey would go on to create many comedying
music videos with one of their firstbecoming the first TV clip to go viral
on YouTube and is widely credited forbringing YouTube to mainstream audiences.

(00:24):
Welcome to Rewind Time.
This episode, the Lonely Island.
Yeah.
It's rewind time.
Bound, bound, bound.
Ba ba bound, ba ba ba. Leave some
silence.

(00:47):
Welcome to episode eight of RewindTime, a YouTube History podcast.
I'm your host Max, and withme is Influencer and YouTuber.
Lucy Liven.
Lucy.
Hello, how are you?
I, I'm well.
That was a bit of adifferent intro for the show.
Yeah.
I wanted to just, in light ofrecent spirited discussion of the

(01:08):
podcast, be clear that we are avery serious historical undertaking.
Mm. We are both, you know, academic historians, right.
We take a very, very.
Effort.
Sorry.
We take a very serious approach is whatI wanna convey to the fact checking.
You're saying the citationsare down in the description?

(01:29):
Of course.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yep.
And
what style of citation are we doing?
Um, Harvard.
Oh yeah.
No, very nice.
Very nice.
Exactly.
Um, it's
like science versus rewind timein terms of podcasts that you can
rely on for historical accuracy.
Oh my gosh.
Okay.
Well, welcome back to Rewind time forany returning listeners and for new

(01:50):
listeners welcome for Rewind time, asMax said a YouTube history podcast.
I am Lucy, I am a YouTuber and someonewho knows a bit too much about YouTube.
I think I'm a little too online.
And Max, would you say that youdunno much about YouTube at all?
No, I have really never watched YouTubein a serious, uh, one of my top three

(02:12):
media type of vibes, you know, but
through this podcast yeah.
You are coming.
It's an education coming.
Yes,
exactly.
Absolutely.
And as we said, this episode is aboutthe lonely island, and we did toss up
whether or not we should do this episode.
We had a discussion.
Did you want to, do youwanna touch on that?
Yeah.
Well you were like, we should do them.
And I was like, I don't thinkthe lonely island are YouTubers.

(02:37):
Like, I think if you ask someone on thestreet like, is Andy Sandberg a YouTuber?
Mm-hmm.
People will be like, no, because he islike a. A mainstream Hollywood performer.
Mm-hmm.
And the other lonely island guys alsohave like a now 20 year plus career.
Mm-hmm.
In Hollywood.
Yeah.
So I was a bit like this podcast we'vebeen focusing on people who are, I

(02:58):
think really like undeniably YouTubers.
Mm-hmm.
But you obviously, and I even knowthe context for how popular they
were in the two thousands mm-hmm.
And the early 2010s.
Mm-hmm.
So I think you worked on me andwere like, and especially watching
these other YouTubers who have beeninfluenced by the Lonely Island.

(03:18):
I was like, okay, uh, I thinkthey're deserving of an episode.
And I imagine you agree.
Well, yes, and as we mentioned inthe kind of intro spiel, uh, they
actually do play into the historyof YouTube overall as a platform.
Like the, uh, musicvideo, lazy Sunday mm-hmm.
Was a really early one that the LonelyIsland did on Saturday Night Live.

(03:41):
If you don't know, um, we'll, we'lltalk a little bit more about it.
I guess we'll get into it.
Um, about who the Lonely Island are, buttheir really early episodes, um, yeah,
went viral in YouTube like before, likeback in the day before, you know, TV shows
would upload their own stuff to YouTube.
This was like only fivemonths after YouTube started.
So yeah, I mean, like from

(04:03):
a, when I, by the time I worked intv, it was very much like we upload
everything we can because the socialplatforms had started paying content
producers to upload at that point.
So it was like really incentivized.
But I think in the earlydays there's like a very.
Antagonistic relationship between likenew online media and legacy media.

(04:26):
Mm-hmm.
Because naturally if you are legacymedia and you're selling ads against
your product, you go, well, whywould I give my product away to a
third party YouTube to sell theirads alongside and I get nothing?
Mm. So really like what the LonelyIsland did when they joined SNL and

(04:47):
sort of launched the like digitalshort format, um, which is like.
Basically rather than like SNL, ifyou don't know Saturday Night Live.
Yes.
Is it American Sketch Comedy Show?
It's
like the most famous Yeah.
Sketch.
It's ran
for like 50 years.
Yeah.
It's Sketch slash Improv.
Exactly.
Comedy.
Yeah.
But it's, it's, so it's performedlive as, as the name suggests.

(05:09):
Mm-hmm.
But yeah, so they do mostly do livesketch comedy, but the Lonely Island
stuff is primarily pretty recorded.
Mm. Like you would do say a music videoand then they would sometimes broadcast
it during the SNL run on Saturday night,or they would upload it to YouTube and
then people would, you know, consume itthat way or, and it can promote the show.

(05:33):
It can have the host in it, itcould have the musical guest in it.
Honestly, it seems like, from whatI've read, they were given pretty
much free reign to do what theywanted with these digital videos.
Yeah.
And I mean, you can, we can see,'cause we will talk about some of
them, but they do also incorporate.
Like celebrity cameos,like celebrity guests.
Um, and that would oftentimesbe, you know, the host for SNL

(05:57):
that week or the musical guest.
Um, and they would collaborate with them.
And I think we can see as time goeson that they, the lonely island do
tend to pull more and more of thosecelebrity guests in terms of Yeah.
Yeah.
The lonely island.
So they join the show in 2005.
Mm-hmm.
Andy Sandberg is, I would say the most,

(06:17):
the front man
camera friendly.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He eventually, actually gets includedin the performing cast of SNL.
Mm-hmm.
Um,
I don't think he's ever like the mainsketch guy, but he's featured in work
outside of the Lonely Island on theshow, but the other two members, Akiva
and Yma, they joined the writing staff.

(06:38):
Mm-hmm.
So they're writing for the show forseveral years, and we wanted to switch
the format up this week to coverthe Lonely Island a bit because of.
What I said before and how these guyshave a long Hollywood career and have
been spoken about and covered in Yeah.
Those industry areas Ifeel a lot of listeners

(07:00):
will also be familiar with.
Yeah.
Andy said Andy Sandberg throughlike Brooklyn nine nine.
Of course.
Extremely popular show.
Yeah.
Had a viral campaign.
Yeah.
To get it, you get another season, you know, so it, it doesn't make
sense for us to like kind of cover
the Lonely Island themselves.
Have their own history podcastwhere they are currently like 50.
We just found this episode last nightin talking about all of their digital

(07:22):
shorts ever, as with Seth Myers.
So if you are interested inLowly Island history, I encourage
you to check that podcast out.
Uh, friend of the show, Andy Sandberg.
We'd appreciate it.
Early podcast episodes.
We haven't made it to 10 episodes andwe're already like, you should go listen
to this other podcast instead of ours.
Or no.
I suppose in, in addition that,I mean that's extra, that speaks
to like we are pioneeringsomething here, right?

(07:45):
Yeah.
That's done.
The history of I Justine.
No.
Well, no, actually we have, thank you.
Yeah, well that's why.
That's
what I mean.
So true.
But rather than just do a run throughof their YouTube quote unquote career,
we are actually going to approach thisby doing a countdown of our top 10

(08:07):
favorite lonely island music videos.
Mm-hmm.
So Lucy and I have separatelydevised and watched, sorry.
We've devised a top 10 list based on allof the music videos the Lonely Island
has released until the present day.
And then our idea is that startingfrom 10, we will count down until
we reach our favorite videos.

(08:28):
If one of us has a video on our listhigher than the other person, we
will wait to discuss it until thatperson has reached it on their list.
So, for example, if my number 10is Lucy's number one, if I say my
number 10, we will, Lucy will justsay, this is higher on my list.
And then we will wait until shereveals when it's on her list.

(08:50):
Yes.
Does that make sense to you?
To Lucy?
Sure does.
Yeah.
I hope it makes sense to the audience,
but they can't respond 'cause thisis not life unlike SNL, but it's,
I like that one.
We, this is actually, wehave never made a cut.
This is all completely unedited.
Yeah.
No, we, uh, completely flawless.
We never make mistakes.
There are never edited sectionsat all on this podcast.

(09:11):
Would you like to go firstor would you like me to
I was gonna say, did you want to, um,do like a guess for my, oh, prediction.
Do you wanna do predictions?
'cause we don't know each other's lists.
Yeah.
We've kept them top secret.
Um, when we were sitting next to eachother on the couch, going through
watching a myriad of songs about,uh, penises and sex, we ensured that

(09:34):
we were not, it was clandestine.
It was like conclave.
Yeah.
I will say though, given Ithink you have listened to way
more lonely arm than I have.
Um, I did have a understanding ofthe songs that you liked because
you've referenced them to me before.
Oh, we didn't, but at the same time, you also masked your reaction, whereas

(09:55):
I'd not seen many of these before, soI think I was a bit more open in terms
of what I liked and what I didn't like.
I was gonna say,
we didn't even the format,it's all over the shop.
Okay.
It's the rainy weather.
It's making us crazy.
We haven't even discussed like what we,our, our, uh, history with all the island.
You kind of briefly touched on it,but would you like to, sorry, focus.

(10:15):
I personally,
I don't have any history.
No
history, but of course I was in schoolin the two thousands and the 2010s, so
like I have people saying I'm on a boat.
Yeah.
Or jizz in my pants.
Or like a boss.
Yeah.
Like, yeah, like a boss.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So
I, I kind of felt, Ifound that very annoying.

(10:38):
I think like any overplayed meme is.
Um, and maybe that reflectedin my ranking of those videos.
Mm-hmm.
But I didn't go out of my way, I think,to ever independently listen to a Lonely
Island song or watch the music video.
Mm. The one exception is Ihave seen their, I think 2016
movie pop star never stopped.

(10:58):
We watched that together though.
Yes.
Yeah.
And I think it's really, really good.
Yeah.
It would be like one of my favoriteAmerican like studio comedy films.
I think it's really funny.
Yeah.
We both really enjoyed it, so.
Yes.
What about you?
We have, we're not getting thefavorites yet, I suppose it's not
the favorite for week spoilers.
Yeah, spoilers.
Um, me, I, I mean, look, as thispodcast is a lot of the time, I

(11:22):
usually am the one having a bit more.
Uh, a bit more like, I guess touch points.
Um, but I was a lonely Island fan.
I was, I think, I'm pretty sure thatthey, on top of being on YouTube, which
is where I primarily watched theirstuff, they also uploaded a lot of
their music videos to iTunes for free.
So I had them, like on my, on myphone before, or maybe I did YouTube,

(11:46):
YouTube video downloading throughlike some dodgy browser thing to,
I feel like, to say they would've
sold the music videos.
Yeah.
I don't know.
Look, all I know is that Ireally liked The Lonely Island.
I had friends in high school whowere big, um, like Andy Sandberg fans
who really liked the movie Hot Rod.
Um, I'm not a big fanof Hot Rod personally.
It's like, not my favorite, but, uh,I, I listen to a lot of the like, yeah,

(12:11):
2011 to 2014, like high, which is whenI would've been in, uh, senior high
school era, lonely island, lots of it.
Um, and also my friends like had youngerbrothers who were into all of the.
Like more, I would sayoverplayed, lonely island.
But yeah, I'm very familiar.
So it was, this has been afun like Yeah, I don't really
like the mainstream lonely island.

(12:33):
No, I don't really like juice in the pan.
I like it.
I
like digging in a box.
Yeah, I like
it.
Before it was popular, Ilike the, me being highbrow
about the lonely island.
Yeah.
Um, okay, so pretty.
So what are your predictions?
Okay.
What do you think my number one is?
Well, well guys.
Okay.
You wanna to let you in a little secret.
Would you like to makea confession secret?

(12:53):
Hmm
Uh, Lucy knows what my number one isbecause I left my list in the show notes
document that she opened this morning.
So to prepare for the episode?
Yeah.
Yes.
So I will instead bepredicting your number two.
Wait, I'll be predicting your number two.
Yes.
You'll be predicting my number one.
Yes.
Okay.

(13:14):
You'll be predicting my number two.
What do you think my number two is?
I think you are.
Number two is, here I go.
Featuring Charlie XCX.
Interesting.
I That's your number
two?
Yep.
Yeah,
fair enough.
I think your number one isthreesome with Justin Timberlake.
You mean
three-way,
I mean Three-way, yes.

(13:34):
Yeah.
Okay.
That's a good guess.
It's good that you corrected me,so it's suggest that you are like,
familiar and like that video.
I'm just so a pretty good guess.
I'm just
familiar and have withall of their discography.
All right.
Well, speaking of, do you want toshout out any honorable mentions?
Ah-huh.
Yes.
That are not in your top 10.
I, I will start by going, there'sa series of videos and they're

(13:56):
basically, it's like the two guys saga.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And there's about four of them.
And they don't haveAndy Sandberg on vocals.
It's um, our older and Kiva.
Yeah.
Yma and Akiva.
Mm-hmm.
Who are like more behind this.
Yma is rapping quite a bitthrough Lonely Island work.
Mm-hmm.
But Akiva is really like,he seems to be the guy.

(14:17):
You know, the directorof most of these videos.
Yeah.
So I think he's thebehind the camera talent.
Mm-hmm.
But these, it's like a very, like lo-fium, nineties hip hop boom bap stuff.
And initially I was like, I, like theystarted when they were recently on SNL
and they've kept this series going likefor eight years or so, and I didn't

(14:41):
like the initial ones, but as we wenton and they developed like the two
guys law, I started becoming a fan.
Not enough to be top 10, but Iappreciate they maintained, they
maintained the commitment to this bit.
Uh, and it became funnier over time.
Yeah.
I, I quite liked the, thelater entries in the series.

(15:01):
I think it was somethinglike, we Need Love, I think.
Yes.
That one was a highlight for me,
was my number 13.
Oh, on my list.
Yeah.
Okay.
Oh, we should also say we are gonnamake a playlist of all the songs.
Like from our top 10 in order inthe order that we talk about them.
So because for obvious copyright reasons,we can't put like really many, if

(15:23):
any, clips of music into this episode.
So if you do want to, um, referencethe songs we're talking about, we will
put the link to that playlist in thedescription so you can kind of like listen
through the top 10 as we go through it.
But yeah,
we should also, and you mentionedit previously, but Lazy Sunday.
Yes.
I imagine it's not in your top 10.
No, it's not.
Cool.
So it was like the second digitalshort that, um, was made for SNL and

(15:49):
it became the most, nu sorry, it becamethe most watched video on YouTube when
it was released in I believe, 2005.
Mm-hmm.
And it's a like a sort of agangster rap track with Chris
Parnell who was on SNL at the time.
Yeah.
And Andy Sandberg.
And that I'm sure was like superinstrumental in getting the lonely

(16:11):
island, uh, a lot of goodwill and thefreedom to make more videos at SNL
and the justification for it tobe an episode on our podcast.
Yeah,
of course.
Yeah.
And um, but also the fact that itwas a number one YouTube video at the
time, you know, that's quite cool.
Yeah.
There's probably another timelinewhere the Lonely Island did not sign
or partner with like a mainstreammedia institution and they instead

(16:34):
did YouTube comedy Allah Mosh.
Yeah.
You know?
No, I do think that is a possibility.
And I think, you know, we're probablyseeing now the, the lonely islands
that are in their infancy now.
The Baby Lonely Islands will beon YouTube and TikTok, and we've
kind of already seen that with,um, people like, like Bo Burnham,
you know?
Yeah, yeah.

(16:54):
Well, yeah.
No.
Sort of, not really.
Yeah.
He's owned by Netflix, butyeah, kind of not really.
Yeah, I see what you mean.
Um, okay.
But other honorable mentions, other honorable mentions.
I do think Lazy Sunday ifpeople haven't seen it.
It's not, it's not like one of myfavorites, but I think it deserves an
honorable mention because I actually thinkthat concept of it is really funny because

(17:16):
it's just the idea of a perfect Sunday.
And I laughed 'cause I was like, thisis actually a pretty ideal Sunday for
me, which is, um, go and get cupcakes
at Magnolia, at mag at Magnolia
Bakery in New York, which wedid do, and I actually have a
YouTube video of us doing it.
Subtle plug.
Um, but yeah, we, we went and gotcupcakes of Magnolia and then going

(17:38):
to a convenience store, buyingsnacks, and then sneaking them into a
moving matinee and they specificallygo to the Chronicles of Nia.
Um, and I'm like, pretty ideal day.
So I do like that one.
Uh, let me pull up a,my honorable mentions.
I had a really hard timecutting down to my top 10.
So you might be surprised and thinkthat some of these will be in my

(17:58):
top 10, but they ultimately didnot end up, uh, the creep Mm. Was
very close to being in my short 10.
That was my 12.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It's also my 12, um, which is, itfeatures John Waters, which is crazy.
So iconic and Nicki Minaj.
So you get like a Nicki Minaa rap verse in this, which,
you know, the Barbs will love.

(18:20):
I'm sure this is a, it has a
lot of views.
Mm. Um, my, I enjoyed the wholething for me, my reservation,
it just wasn't funny enough.
And I really like the dance stone.
I really like the threeboys creep aesthetic.
Yeah.
Um, it was really cool.
Yeah.
But
it's very different to a lotof the other stuff they do.
Yeah.
It's a bit more out there, it'sa bit more oddball potentially

(18:41):
the John Waters influence.
But I did, I did like that one.
Um, and then my other one, which islike my number 11, so it was like
really close, was Sushi Glory hole.
Which is Okay.
Yeah.
One of the new.
Lonely Island songs, which weshould say Lonely Island, obviously
starting in like 2005 with SNL.

(19:02):
Like all the music videos werestarting around like 2005.
They then kind of made music videospretty consistently until, what
was it, 2017, something like that.
For The Lonely
Island.
Uh, the Lonely Island or, yeah.
And then they had that break andit was like an eight year break.
Yeah.
Andy Sandberg left.
SNL
Yep.
In 2012.
Yep.
And the Lonely Island operatedindependently of SN l mm-hmm.

(19:24):
For a few years.
And then they went on hiatusuntil Sushi Glory Hole.
Yeah.
Which, but without spoilers, we shouldsave discussion of Sushi Glory Hole.
Oh.
Because it is on my top 10.
Wow.
Okay.
Alright.
Um, yeah.
Any other honorable mentions from you?
I had another one, but I, I'mpretty sure it's on your top
10, so I'm not gonna, let's go,
let's go through the 10.
Okay.
And if there's anything that neither ofus spoke about, we can tag it on then.

(19:47):
Space
Olympics.
Space Olympics is my number 11.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
It didn't make it quitethat high speed Space
Olympics.
Is so bonkers.
And it is like, it's like verycamp Andy Sandberg is playing
like, uh, like a, he looks
like someone from the Hunger Games.
Yes.
An Olympic administrator who lookslike someone from the Hunger Games.
Yeah.
And the song is about the attempts to puton the Space Olympics and the various,

(20:12):
uh, like issues that he runs into.
Yeah.
And it's, he just fullycommits, it's like a euro, it's
like a Eurovision style
track.
It's really weird.
Anytime, like, spoiler alert, butanytime Andy Sandberg gets put in
a wig, I think you're guaranteedto have a pretty good time.
'cause he's in a crazy wig for that one.
Alright.
Also, sorry, I will mention, I wasjust gonna say Andy Sandberg's hot.

(20:35):
Yeah.
You're allowed to say that.
Yeah, I am.
I feel like I just kept watching.
I, I'm like, you know when youare like, oh yeah, I, I, I've,
I've forgotten your charm.
Just white man with brown floppy hair.
I mean, I did ask you how old youthought he was and you said something
like 38 and I was like, no, he is 46.

(20:55):
Yeah, he's And
he looking good.
So good.
Yeah, looks so good.
He looks pretty much like he did in 2005.
It's uh, very impressive.
What
is it?
The, the, the beautyof being unproblematic.
Oh yeah.
It's
like, you know, just don't, don't be eviland you'll look good for a long time.
Hopefully.
I don't know.
But it looks good.
And I also don't really watch Brooklynnine nine, which I feel like people

(21:17):
will be surprised to hear 'cause I'mlike kind of an Andy Sandberg fan,
but some of the comedy, I just can't,that's the way this podcast is about.
Yeah.
I don't really like the police, sothat's why I wouldn't watch that show.
Yeah.
Well they spoilers for maybesome future conversation.
Yeah.
But yeah.
Um, okay, so starting with no 10,
who's going first?
I'll go first.
Okay.
Our Unproblematic King AndySandberg is a white upper class.

(21:40):
Rastafarian?
No.
In the music video.
Russ?
Trent.
Trent
number 10 is Russ Trent.
My number
one is Russ Trent.
Lucy 10?
Yeah.
Is number is Russ Trent on your list?
No.
Okay.
You did not like Russ Trent.
I, it,
it grew on me, but yeah.
It's really, yeah.
Okay.
So I knew, I knew the moment wesaw it, neither of it's, this
was what I hadn't seen before.
Yeah.

(22:00):
I knew the moment it turnedon the opening like four bars.
I was like, this will be inMax's top 10, a hundred percent.
So,
so it's like a parody reggaesong, um, from their first album
and it was an SNL digital short.
And yet it's about, um, an IvyLeague, like super, like, you know,

(22:20):
privileged white kid who thinks heis Ara and this is like a well worn
trope in American comedy movies.
Mm-hmm.
You see, like when they go to college, there's the guys playing hacky s hacky
sax are, and they, they have dreadlocks.
They're all white like.
We, I don't there those peopleare in Australia, but certainly,

(22:42):
I don't think to the same degree.
Cultural relevancy.
No.
Yeah, exactly.
Um, and basically the song goes throughAndy Sandberg being basically increasingly
embarrassing in terms of like, he islike saying he, they, he loves calling
people bald head, which is so funnybecause uh, you know, he himself is

(23:05):
a white man with dreadlocks, but heeventually is fully like, you know,
doing his ruster song, uh, in frontof actual Jamaican appearing people.
And when he sees them, he ofcourse immediately goes silent.
'cause he's like, wellthis is embarrassing.
And then immediately likesprings back into song, uh,
you did not like this video.

(23:25):
It's not that I didn't.
It, it grew on me.
'cause we did revisit a couple of them.
We watched all of them through, and thenwe went back for ones that I think were
in contention for us about whether ornot they were gonna make our top 10.
So we did rewatch this one.
It climbed up higher in my overallranking upon a rewatch, but still not
quite near my top 10 really at all.

(23:46):
Um, it is funny.
I think it's just, I think my favoritepart about Russ Trent is that he kind of
drops the Ru Safari accent immediately.
Like he starts the song with it andthen he, well because he still, he
basically is doing like white Yeah.
Like, I don't know how to explainit, but he's just like, he's
being like me is a Rastafarian.

(24:07):
Like he's not trying to do aJamaican accent, which I think
does save this sketch for me.
I think if he was trying todo it, it would be, yeah.
I mean he's, it's not like, um, do youremember or do you know about when,
um, our recent Oscar winning King, uh.
Adrian Brody.
Adrian Brody got banned fromSNL for his Ruster character.

(24:28):
Yeah.
So true.
And so bringing back Ruster comedy.
So like soon after this was after that.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The thing is, I, from what I understandin the video, Adrian Brody was
being like, I am a Jamaican person.
Yeah.
So that's bad.
Exactly.
That's not funny.
But making
fun of white people thinkingthey are Jamaican Yeah.
Is obviously funny.

(24:49):
'cause the target is
something, yeah.
Lonely island.
I actually, a lot of these videos Iwas like, maybe some of these will age
poorly in terms of like, you know, aswe've seen with some of our YouTube
friends are mosh, um, where like I waslike, maybe this will, some of this will
like age poorly, but a lot of it kind ofdoesn't Like it does, it does hold up.

(25:11):
Which is, um, always good.
They're more, they're more onthe Neil to Riga side of YouTube.
Yeah.
Look, say what you will about thelame stream media, but the average
quality of a lonely island music video.
Far and above better than theother YouTubers we have watched.
I
would also say for most of theones in our top 10, the average
budget would also be like 10 times.
Yeah, fair enough.
So,

(25:31):
um, okay.
What's your top 10?
What's your number 10?
My number 10 is Awesome Town, which is,oh, the theme song to their TV show.
This is kind of cheating a little bit.
We should acknowledge this is notan video, it's not technically
official video, lonely Easy video,
but they did upload it to theirYouTube channel as like an extended cut

(25:52):
Yep.
Of a theme for a TV show theydid, um, which was short-lived.
Apparently.
They had a few like TV shows beforethey got onto SNL and they all
kind of like did a pilot, did likea few episodes and then got cut.
I think this is, they literallyjust shot a pilot for this.
Yeah, yeah.
Okay.
But there's
no episodes after that.
I have.

(26:12):
A nostalgic love of this.
'cause I got introduced to thiswhen I was in high school, um,
and I thought it was really funny.
It's in line with kind of my comedystylings Awesome Town theme song is kind
of like a Sesame Street esque theme.
Yep.
Um, they have like, you know, acast of like, the town is with them.

(26:32):
It's like a set, it's likea really weird studio set.
It's
like the set is like Main Street USA
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
And then they have like theircast of people and they're all
doing choreography together.
Um, it's just they introduceeach of the members of the
Lonely Island, which is helpful
for me.
I'm Andy.
Yeah.
Yma Akiva Andy.

(26:53):
And they go back through multiple times.
I just think there's something aboutthis which, yeah, it's, it's quite
different to some of the Lonely Islandstuff, which is trying to be, you
know, parodies of like mainstream pop.
Whereas this is a Sesame Street parody.
It's completely different,but it's so funny.
I don't know.
There's something aboutit that me, yeah, I
had it in my top 10 while wewatched, but it fell down to 16.

(27:15):
Okay.
At the end.
Yeah.
But it's still, it's good.
There's like a little subversive partsort of in the middle, which I won't
spoil so viewers can go and listen to it.
But, um, I don't know.
I just, I just really like it andI, I still feel like it holds up
and I just treasure it a littlebit more than some of the ones that
were just below my top, top 10.

(27:35):
This one, I think it just deserved a spot.
So maybe a bit of a biaspick, but that's okay.
'cause it's my top 10, not your top 10.
Rah rah.
Okay, my number nine is ShyRonnie two featuring Rihanna.
I have this higher.
Okay.
Well, we'll skip, skip that one then.
We won.
Won't talk about that.
What's your number?
Nine?
Uh, my number nine is spring break Anthem.

(27:58):
Wow.
Okay.
This is not in my top 10.
No.
Um, I appreciate that you, this is probably the video
you made us rewatch the most.
It's 17 for me.
I was bamboozled bythis upon watching this.
So for most of these music videos,I would say for more than half I had
already seen them and I was familiarwith them, especially like 2010 onwards.

(28:23):
I pretty much knew all of those.
This one I had neverseen before in my life.
And we were watching it and Iwas just like, what is going on?
So Spring Break Anthem, as the titlesuggests, is like a spring break song.
It's like a rap song, spring break
for
International ba listen,ba bam, ba bam, bam.
Um, oh, you were justexplaining what spring break is.

(28:45):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Um, it's like.
American College students have what isreferred to as their spring break, but
they all the, you know, spring breakis the film famously depicting it.
They all congregate.
I think in like Florida, in Miami
there's, so there's Fort Lauderdale.
Oh, okay.
Here we go.
In Florida, it's in the song.
Oh yeah.
It's, so, it's in Florida and
there's also Cancun in Mexico.

(29:07):
So people, there's like differentlocations for Australian listeners,
it's pretty much just likeschoolies on the Gold Coast.
No, it's not high school students.
It's not high school students.
It's just college, college students.
It's like, ah, it's thing's like, and yeah, they just basically, yeah.
Yeah.
True.
Get really drunk, do drugs, swim in the pool, enjoy hot
weather, take their top off.
Like that's pretty break.
It's just, it's having a
big party.
Yeah.
And you are in college, so you're inyour like late teens, early twenties.

(29:30):
Um, that's what, that's what that is.
So it's like a, a frat song.
It's like a hype up song.
That's how it starts.
Um, but pretty quickly into it, it'll belike, you know, like, see, like drinking
beer, doing drugs, dah, dah dah, dah.
Marry a man.
And I was like, what?

(29:50):
And the magic of this musicvideo is that it's cut.
Like they're fully in likean actual spring break party.
That is what it looks like.
They're like a bunch of people in like abig pool party, like water, guns, beer.
They have the sunglasses where it's like
fluro.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Very.
Um,
very 21, 22 jump street,which you haven't seen.
No, we should watch that.
We should watch it.

(30:10):
Okay.
It's really good.
Um, and then as the track goeson, they continually cut in
shots talking about gay marriage.
And I was like, what?
So with no context, it's so crazy.
But you, we did find outwhat the context was.
Yeah.
The idea.
So this was not for SNL, thiswas for a Lonely Island album.

(30:33):
Um, the guys were like, we wantedto juxtapose how the like crazy
behavior at spring break is likeacceptable in American society.
Mm-hmm.
But gay marriage is somethingthat's seen as like unacceptable
by many people, especially, youknow, the type of, was this just

(30:56):
after gay marriage waslegalized or just before
It was in 2013.
So I think it's literally right around it.
Okay.
Yeah.
But it's, yeah.
Something that's in the conversation.
Mm-hmm.
Uh, and Andy Sandberg here, he'slike, uh, I wanted to contrast
people acting like animals.
Compared to same sex marriage, which he is like, it's people who
just wanna be civilized and haverights and care for each other.

(31:19):
And you read that to me and Iwas like, that is so wholesome.
Like such a W for Andy Sandberg.
Yeah.
To be like, this is whywe want to make this song.
And the music video itselfhas some big celebrity cameos.
James Franco.
Question mark.
Question mark.
But also, what's his name?
Edward Norton.
Yep.
Ed Norton.
And Norton.
And so it's all three of thelonely island boys in these

(31:42):
really like beautifully shop.
They're married.
There's one
more, Zach gals gal is the final husband.
So they're all getting marriedand it's like these really
beautiful, like romantic shots.
Like it's something out of like awedding video of them getting married,
having flowers thrown over them.
They're like kissing.
It's so cute.
And then, yeah, I thinkthe final song, uh, sorry.
The final lyric is Crushing Pussy.

(32:05):
Marry a Man or something like that.
Um, I can pull it up for you.
Yeah.
But it's something along those lines.
Yeah.
Basically.
Yeah.
The juxtaposition I think works reallywell for me, and I think it has a nice, a
nice message, I guess, which I don't know.
Yeah.
I just thought it was really good.
I'd never seen it before.
Um.
And I just really liked it.
So that's why they performed
it as something called YouTube ComedyWeek, if you know what that is.

(32:28):
I don't.
Wow.
Too niche for even our YouTube expert.
The final lines promise to cherish, trust and respect him crushing pussy.
Marry a man.
There's also the two Kingsholding hand in hand.
I just thought that wasreally funny as well.
I don't know, it's just, yeah, it's very, very fun music video and, um, I think

(32:48):
maybe potentially like a lesser known one.
Yeah.
So if you haven't seenthat one, check it out.
I really liked it.
Uh, number eight.
What was your number eight?
My number eight is Jack Sparrowfeaturing Michael Bolton.
Okay.
This actually justmissed out on my top 10.
Wow.
Not top 10, 13.
Yeah.
That's crazy because you always talkabout this song and I knew about it

(33:11):
basically because of you singing it.
Yeah.
I don't know.
I just, when I was re I think.
It's one of these ones whereI'm like, I think like certain
parts of it are really funny.
Yeah.
And like the concept of it is funny, but having to like sit through the whole
thing, like it was really borderline.
Like I did, I did toss up includingit in my top 10, but ultimately

(33:32):
did not in favor of other things.
And because I knew you'dput it in your top 10.
Is that cheating?
No.
No.
It's not cheating.
It's strategic.
Unlike my actual number onethat, you know, you just assumed
I would put it in my top 10,
right?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
yeah.
But would you like toexplain what Jack Sparrow is?
Jack Sparrow.
So Michael Bolton, like famous crooner.
Sort of like the time they didthis video in the early 2010s.

(33:55):
It's such a
random collaboration.
Yeah, he's like post his peak, but he's like a legacy artist
and the setup is, they're like,Michael, come into the studio, do
a song with us, the Lonely Island.
'cause they're doings heaps ofceleb collabs at this point.
Yeah.
And they have albums.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Which I think we've said, but theyare releasing musical albums as well.
So that's the premise for the music video.
Michael is like, I have akiller hook for you guys.

(34:17):
Let's do it.
And so the set is like avery typical club sequence.
The lonely island guys are doinglike their normal sort of frat
rap about, you know, having sexwith girls, my penis, et cetera.
Yeah.
And then out of nowhere it justsmashes to Michael Bolton in, uh,
like on the, the shore in a sort of,in the pirate's mast of ship, you

(34:42):
know, it's like in a linen shirt.
Like he's marro.
Yeah.
Yeah.
He's wearing pirate gear winds
blowing.
And he hits this chorus.
And the chorus is just basically imaginewhat the big sweeping theme pop song
over the credits of a Pirates of theCaribbean movie would sound like.
And he just does that.
So I'll get the chorus up for you.

(35:04):
Oh, I know it, you know.
Oh, see?
Yeah.
Sing it for us.
This is the Tale of Captain Jack Sparrow.
A pirate that's pretty sobrave on the seventies.
And then the boys are like, what?
Yeah, they're literally,they, they're doing ad libs
and they're being like, what?
And they're being like, Michael, no.
Being like, what are you talking about
on the Is love Tortuga?

(35:25):
Yes.
And the music Bang.
The music is, I
don't think it's a direct sample,uh, but it does very much crib
from the like, iconic punk theme.
Cian
is like,
and this is like,
it's, I would almost sayit's a variation on a theme.
If we, we get really technical andmusical battle it, I actually, I

(35:47):
have some friends who are quite intomusic who do occasionally listen to
the pod, so maybe I'll, I'll consultthem, uh, or get their feedback.
But I would say it's likea variation on the theme.
I don't it, it's.
Uh, copyright wise, I don'tknow how they managed it.
I suppose it's technically,yeah, it's parody.
It's not, they're actually protected.
Yeah.
It's parody.
You're right.
They are protected.
Yeah, it's so true.

(36:07):
So true.
You're so smart.
Um, so what about Jack Sparrow?
Do you really like to, is thereanything else thing else in the
music video you wanna wanna cover?
I think the
actual hook is really catchy
because it's just thePirates of the Caribbean.
Yeah.
It's actually funny.
It's like potentially one ofMichael Bolton's, like probably his
one of, if not his biggest song.

(36:28):
Um, so the sincerelythe hook is very catchy.
He also, in the second chorus, fully appears dressed as
Johnny Depp, as Jack Sparrow.
Mm. And the likeness is pretty goodbecause Michael Bolton at this point is
also like a 50 something crusty white man.
Um, but he also then goes through, 'causethe boys are like, please stop Michael.

(36:50):
And then he just, they smashthrough like a series of him in.
Famous films and then updatingthe chorus to reflect that.
So they go through like Forrest Gump,Aaron Brockovich, Scarface, Jerry McGuire.
Uh, meanwhile the boys arebeing like, what is going on?
Um, but the reason, yeah, I had it up hereis that, um, the rapping, wrapping is not

(37:16):
as aggressive and fratty as some of themore heavy tracks the lonely island do,
which I'm not spoilers a massive fan of.
Yeah.
Uh, and the beat itself isquite easy to listen to.
And also crucially, the verses are keptquite short, so you're not actually being
taken away from the main funny part, which is the Michael Bolton sequences.

(37:39):
They're basically there as likethe setup for the gag payoff.
Um, so yeah, I thinkall around this is, I.
A pretty solid use of a celebrity.
Yeah.
But overwhelmingly, I think it's like justa good combo of, it's a funny premise.
The song is really good to listen to.

(37:59):
Um, and yeah, thatchorus is like so catchy.
I think we both sort of agree that, andyou know, you can disagree with me if
you like, but I think our favorite LonelyIsland songs are the ones that marry
the music with it being really funnybecause sometimes they make decent songs.
They actually, some of the ones thatwere right at the bottom of my list

(38:22):
where I was like, this sucks, iswhere they're trying to genuinely
make a song but it's not funny.
Yeah.
Or like it's not very funny.
And these are usually likethe celebrity collapse.
I'm not gonna place the blame on uh,Andy Yer and Akiva for these ones.
The that one with Adam Levine
and Kendrick Lamar.
I
hated it.
Whole
surprise winner.
Kendrick Lamar.
Oh yeah, I know.

(38:42):
Love Kendrick.
Um.
Medium on Animal Levine.
I like him for meme purposes.
'cause I love Animals as a karaokesong, which I know you do as well.
Yeah.
Um, but that one, I don't evenremember what it was called.
Honestly, most of the stuff weliked was stuff that was on SNL.
Yeah.
And the stuff we didn'tlike was stuff they did.
I think that one was on snl.
It was on SN l. Yeah.

(39:03):
But it was bad.
But the other stuff similar tothat with stuff they did for their
own, like independent albums.
Yeah.
I think it's more Okay.
But like when they are doing like a comedymusic video that's for SNL, the ones where
the artists, it, to me it kind of giveslike the celebrity guests like don't,
like they just don't want to be too silly.

(39:24):
Or I don't know, maybe I'm wrong.
No,
there's a hundred percent, there are somecelebs who fully commit and they're the
ones that I have I think high on my list.
Yeah.
And there are some who seem to bethere as a, a marketing experience.
Yeah.
And honestly we don't know maybe.
They were presented with theconcept and that was the extent

(39:45):
of the role that they did.
Yeah.
Well maybe they just had like
not enough like lead time.
Yeah.
Or who, who knows?
Like, you know, like anyone, notevery single creative project is
gonna be your best creative project.
That's not how that works.
But something like, for example, not super high on my list, but
something that I respect, likeNatalie's rap I don't have on my
list, but um, I did think it was, it's
very influential.

(40:06):
Yeah.
You know, it's give it credit.
Natalie's rap, I think isthe first time they have
a celebrity, an
Alister?
Yeah.
In a lonely
island.
Yeah.
It's Natalie
Portman rapping.
Yeah.
And she basically just doeslike a very like eminent style,
aggressive, hardcore hip hop rap.
And you're like, wow, it'sNatalie Portman doing that.
That's so crazy.
Yeah.
Which seems like pretty normal now, but atthe time, you know, we didn't get to see

(40:28):
celebs out of their element that often.
Yeah.
Let loose.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So that was cool.
And she
commits and anyway, but sorry, we'regetting a little off track, but, uh.
Yeah.
Alright.
Jack Sparrow, what was that?
Number eight?
Number eight?
Uh, my number eight is I just had sex.
Oh.
Do you have that on your list?
No,
I don't.
Okay.
I rated that number 18.

(40:49):
Wow.
Yeah.
Okay.
Quite a bit lower.
I do not like, I just had sex that much.
I,
it does just seem mostly likean ACON song, which is fine.
I think that's why I like it.
Yeah,
exactly.
But like, it just, yeah.
Okay.
Why do you like it?
I, I nearly didn't havethis on my top 10 as well.

(41:10):
I feel like my, probably from mytop eight to two 15, I was like,
you could really move these around.
Yeah.
Like it's really up for debate.
I ultimately put this on my list becauseI think Acorns hook is so banging and
I think the music video is pretty good.

(41:30):
I don't know, just.
And, and I specifically like thelittle dance that ACON does in like
the first verse, or like, it's thefirst chorus I think, where it's like
a woman let me put my penis inside her.
And he like does a little hand, like driving the bus kind of motion.
It's very funny to me.
Um, I think this one does wellbecause it's quite sincere

(41:51):
again, in being like a good song.
Like it's a good acon song.
Um, and this also has like my morepreferred style of Andy Sandberg
rapping where he's like trying to belike less hardcore and like leans into
the fact that he's like a white man inhis thirties, um, by the verse where
he's like, have you ever had sex?
I did.

(42:11):
It felt great.
It felt so good when Idid it with my penis.
And I was like, you know what?
You're not wrong, I guess.
I don't know.
I don't, yeah, I don't have a penis.
I think there is like,
and we can categorize their rapstyles, but there is a rap style
which is like character first where.
He changes the delivery based on, solike this video, it's like two versions.

(42:34):
So it's like,
I don't even think it's two versions.
I think it's just them beingtwo guys who enjoy sex but
aren't particularly good at it.
All right.
Okay.
I think,
I think that's the characterization, which is what my like
contention with this song is.
Because the only thing is the depictionin this music video is that, and
like the messaging through it isthat they're like, I'm so lucky to

(42:58):
be able to have sex with a woman.
Which is true like they are, but equallylike the meme is sort of like that.
They, uh, don't seem to beparticularly high performers and
it does not last particularly long.
And the depiction, themusic videos are the two?
Yeah, like they're two femalecompanions, which are played by
Blake Lively, uh, and Jessica Alba.

(43:19):
And they're looking likedisappointed, like they're sitting
next to them like frowning.
As they're like Jubileecelebrating that they've had sex.
Yeah.
And so that's the only thing.
That's why I think they're
virgins.
And to pull from the final lines,I just had sex, blah blah, blah.
And I'll never go back to thenot having sex ways of the past.

(43:39):
Oh, okay.
So also
the thing like lasting30 seconds, like yeah.
Wow.
I called my parents like, it's all verymuch like I lost my virginity stuff.
Oh,
okay.
But
also equally funny, if you are a30-year-old man and that's your approach
to sex, I'm sure there are many out there.
I thought that that
was my interpretation, that theylike, you know, just haven't
been having it for a while.
And then like someone'slike, sure we can have sex.

(43:59):
And they're like yippy or it'slike in a relationship when you
move to that, to that next stage.
I don't know, I just thinkit is kind of a banger.
I really like the presentation of likethe whole world is united and singing
this song, and I'm like, you know what?
It is something that a lotof people can unite on.
We do.
We do be having sex.
I love this podcast as aprofessional medium for me.

(44:21):
Anyway.
That's
amazing.
Okay, number seven on my list is Dickin a Box featuring Justin Timberlake.
Oh, okay.
I have this higher on my list.
Okay.
Wow.
We'll not talk about it then.
What's your number seven?
Uh, you will definitelynot have this on your list.
I think my number sevenis Reba, two worlds wide.

(44:44):
Wow.
My number six is Reba.
Okay.
So we should talk aboutit now 'cause that's next.
Okay.
All right.
But yeah,
I really like this one as well.
I dunno you'd like this one so much.
This is why it's fun tokeep, keep it a secret.
'cause I was like, thiswon't be on Max's top 10.
It's not that funny.
Can you tell us about, so Reba

(45:04):
Reba, this is another one where I hadnever seen it before, so I was just,
so maybe there is something aboutlike a new lonely island song to me.
Yeah.
But the, the concept of this song is AndySandberg as himself, like he's playing
the character of Andy Sandberg, a castmember on SNL and Keenan Thompson is that

(45:26):
his name is playing Reba McIntyre, whois a country singer, uh, who is white
with like the red hair, if anyone knows.
They're like a singlemom who works two jobs.
That's Reba McIntyre.
So it's very like, kind of like heart andsoul, like for the family country vibes.
So this song is about Andy Sandbergbeing in a relationship with Reba.

(45:49):
Yes.
And their, how their relationship cameto be and two world collides like them.
It's like we're collaborating on asong and it's so crazy because we're
also in love and I, Andy Sandbergam in love with Reba McIntyre.
Yeah, and it's funny because LonelyIslander working with a lot of
famous musicians at this point.
So when I saw like the concept of thevideo, I assumed that Reba would be, yeah.

(46:12):
In the video, the
title does say featuring Reba Maci.
Yeah.
So I kept like waitingfor Reba to turn up.
Uh, and spoiler.
She does not, no, she does not turn up.
She's keen in the whole time.
She just keen in wig
and they're
like cost.
They do the costumingand the wig for Keenan.
Really?
Well, it is just Keenan, like, I don'tthink Keenan's wearing makeup or anything.

(46:33):
It's just Keenan in a wig with like, like, you know, a 40 to 50 something
year old, like kinda like Dolly Parton.
It's like a country woman.
Like he's wearing like a sortof a beaded calf Dan at points.
And it's just really funny.
Well,
it progresses from Andy just singingabout his relationship with Reba too.

(46:53):
Reba basically, basically Andystarts addressing the fact that,
wow, it's so weird that you have allof these masculine characteristics.
And of course like.
We see that's Keenan in a wig.
And so they, he starts doing the Keenanthat is, starts doing these, um, ad
libs towards the back half of the songthat I think are probably like top five

(47:13):
funny things that we saw in this run.
The one where Andy says, they sayshe's a man who found a wig in a
dumpster and then Kenan just ad-libs.
Your friends are smart.
I was laughing.
It's incredibly funny.
Uh, and I'd encourage you tolisten 'cause they just get more
progressively explicit where it's likey.

(47:36):
Andy's in denial.
It's hanging like my nuts.
And you're laugh.
And it's like, and Andy's stillsinging like, I love my wife.
And he's like, in denial.
He is like,
I love my, I love my wife Reba McIntyre.
Yeah.
Who is a, who is a white country singer.
And it's clearly, and then Keenan thensings from his point of view and is
like, I found a wig in a dumpster.
And then.
SNL star, Andy Sandberg was like, ohmy God, is that you Reper McIntyre?

(47:58):
And he just said, yes.
And that's, I don't know, I just thoughtthis one was an absolute, absolute banger.
I
think this is my favorite likefeature from an SNL cast member.
Yes.
Yeah.
Because, and like Keenan I thinknow is the longest running mm-hmm.
SNL member.
Mm-hmm.
Um, something like 20 years.
So obviously like a pro, but he reallycarries this role in a way that I

(48:24):
don't think the other two lonelyisland members would be able to.
And a theme throughout my list iswhen Andy Sandberg has like a comedic,
or sorry, a performance equal.
Yeah.
It really like elevates, hehas something to bounce off of.
Yeah.
Uh, and it, that's what I thinkthe best lonely island videos have.

(48:45):
Me hating out Adam Levinegives absolutely nothing.
He's just, he's just not very funny.
No he's not.
No
he's not.
Well he actually is Animalsis a really funny Oh yeah,
sorry.
He can't, he's not veryintentionally funny.
Me, I'm
playing on you.
Bang on.
So funny.
You wanna explain
what you're talking about
guys?
The song Animals by Maroonfive is so funny to me.

(49:07):
If you don't know, it's about like, whatif we were like sexy cannibals, right?
He's like, hon, you down eat, you laughand it has a crazy line in it, which
is I come alive when I'm inside you.
He's such a little freak.
I mean, we know Adam Levineis a freak from, uh, you know,
news and stuff like that.

(49:28):
All right.
Anyway, sorry, what is your number six?
Me when I Lucy don't talk about animals.
Uh, challenge actually animals.
Would animals be a top 10?
No, it wouldn't.
Sorry, that's a silly question.
I was like, would animalsbe a top 10 Lo Island song?
No.
'cause it's not.
No, of course not.
The the reason it's funny is 'causethey're doing it seriously anyway.
My number six.
Yeah.
Uh, is mother lover.

(49:50):
Okay, that is on my list.
Yes.
So we'll have to
hold it.
Okay.
We'll have to hold it.
Um, you know my numbersix 'cause it's Reba.
Mm-hmm.
So my number five Is it
my
nu
my no,
my turn again.
No, it's my turn.
You just went.
Alright, sure.
My number five is sushi glory hole.
Oh.

(50:10):
All the way up.
And you're number five.
I
mean, it's very good.
So do you wanna now talk aboutSushi Glory here, us out here.
Us out here.
Us out here.
Us out.
Don't leave.
Don't leave.
Sushi Glory Hole was the firstLonely Island video after hiatus.
Mm-hmm So it only came out last year, which is why I'm sure some people
are not familiar with it, but sortof, kind of out of nowhere really.

(50:34):
Andy Sandberg just has been asof recently much more involved.
I think SNLI watched the
episode where it.
Aired.
Yeah,
because I've been watching SNL um,sort of on and off as of recent
because guys, a little while backI did an improv comedy class.
Um, so I was like, maybeI need to watch SNL

(50:54):
Yeah.
Um, outing yourself as improv.
Um,
I, I quit.
No, no, you just completed level one.
I've completed level one.
There's many levels to go.
There's many
levels.
Um, it's like Scientology in that way.
Um, so I've completed level one, butto ascend to the next level, I have
to give them some more of my money.
All right.
So the video, Akiva and Andy arelike eighties businessmen and

(51:17):
they're pitching almost like ashark tank board of investors.
Maya Rudolph.
Maya Rudolph, who is like alonely island cameo queen.
She's in so many of these videos.
Mm-hmm.
I saw Bo Yang is thereand someone else is there.
Who it?
I think it's.
I wanna say it's Mikey Day.
Sure.
They don't really matter, maybe.
Uh, and they're pitching the concept ofthe sushi glory hole, which is literally

(51:38):
a glory hole that you receive sushi from.
And naturally the investors are nota fan of this idea, but the chorus is
the boys basically being like, hearus out, hear us out, hear us out.
Hear us out.
Don't leave.
Don't leave.
Hear us out.
Hear us out.
Uh, and they are switchingfrom like the boardroom to the

(51:59):
club where the glory hole is.
And they go through the examplesof when you'd want this glory hole.
Like you don't like the food at the sushirestaurant to go out the back and you
get the food through the hole, or you'rehungry and when you're out and about
and you just need a quick bite of sushi.
Um, but the actual presentation ofthis, the edit, I think is really tight.
And it's the same with theother recent video they've done.

(52:20):
Mm-hmm.
So I think back in the day, I'm sureonce they got popular, they had.
Help from the official SNLproductions, but the, the early digital
shorts, they did edit themselves.
Mm-hmm.
Um, so, and the song itself is like, um,it's sort of like a smooth eighties pop
influence beat, so it's very listenable.
Mm-hmm.
And the delivery, like the whisperrapping, I think is like, you know, it's

(52:45):
just, it's quite, it's quite smoothing.
I don know how you feel.
I think the
ly of this one is also particularly,I think because it's like
such a, such a silly concept.
Yeah.
So there's some like lyric aboutthe, like something fresh fish.
Um, you've got the lyrics stuff on yours.
What?
Yeah.
Fresh fish.
What about it?
Where you make me find
it?
Is it like, or they're just saying thingslike high quality fish and it's just like,

(53:07):
I don't know, doing, uh, rhymes with ikaand like nigiri and things like that.
I just think it works quitewell to be, it's, yeah.
The lyric isn't really clever.
Um,
I mean, opens with.
Sushi glory hole.
Imagine that Instead of strangeDick, you'd be getting a snack.
And like, you know, that kindof sells me that I'm ready.

(53:27):
Like that's a, I get it.
I understand.
Yeah,
they got the elevator pitch down.
Yeah.
Um, no, I really, really enjoyed this one.
I really like sushi Glory hole as well.
I didn't end up pointing it in mytop 10 because I don't, I don't
think for me it like gets, I justdon't think it like quite level
reaches like the level of iconicness.

(53:49):
'cause I actually can't, it's one ofthose ones where I'm like, and I suppose
this isn't maybe the way to judge it,but I was like, I can't always remember
what it sounds like when I am notthinking, like, when I'm not watching it.
Whereas other things, like, we can alwaysremember what Dick in a Box or something
like that, A frame is, I always think
about sushi glory hole.
Imagine that.
Oh, okay.
Yeah.
That, that stuck in my head.

(54:10):
Okay, cool.
Wow.
But yeah, so that is my number five.
And it was your number.
11. 11. Okay.
It was just
off my list.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So an honorable mention.
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
All right.
Um, this is my 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, number six.
'cause you skipped me.

(54:31):
You, this is mother lover.
You already said that just before.
I'm sorry.
So I didn't, did I skip you?
You'll need to check the tape.
What's your
number five?
So, sorry, my number five is shy.
Ronnie two.
Yeah.
Yay.
Okay, so Shi Ronnietwo was my number nine.
Okay.
Alright, so tell us about Shi Roni two.
I'm guessing shy Ronniewon't be on your list.

(54:52):
The original Shi Roni?
Yeah.
Yes.
No, it's not, it's not.
Okay.
It's not on my list either.
So Shy Ronnie.
So shy Ronnie two is,what is my number five?
Shy.
Ronnie was the original.
So yeah, we both agreed my
19.
So we both agreed thesequel is vastly better.
But Shai Ronnie is, uh, Andy Sandberg, onscreen Akiva, and Yma offscreen.

(55:15):
And Rihanna.
Mm-hmm.
And I think we both were justlike, do we just like this?
Because it's another Rihanna track andwe're just starved for Rihanna content.
Yeah.
I think that's a bigpart of it, to be honest.
Love Rihanna.
Um, but yeah, shy Ronnie too.
So Shy Ronnie, the character, like the setup of the bit is
that Rihanna is just Rihanna.

(55:36):
She
does a big Rihanna chorus.
Yeah.
And then she hands overto Shy Roni to do the rap.
Yep.
But Shy Roni is shy.
Yep.
And so shy Roni just kind of goeslike, and it's like inaudible.
You can't really hear what he's saying.
And then he does this extremely weirdlaugh, which in the first version
of Shi Roni, they do like four timesand it's quite grading and annoying.

(55:58):
But in Shi Roni too, theyjust do it the one time
Shi Roni two, Bonnie and Clyde.
Yes.
So Shi Roni and Rihanna are robbing a bankand Rihanna's doing her big, you know,
big Hook and Shi Roni is mumbling whenRihanna's like tell the, you know, the
hostages to get, get the money no win.
The bank can
hear you.
Yes.
And Rihanna is doing ad,these ad libs where Hold up.

(56:21):
Uh, she's like interrupting Shi Roni.
Yeah.
And it did feel like we had wayless time in this one OFSi just
mumbling, which is the first one.
It was more about Rihanna.
Yeah.
So here it's probably like 80% Rihanna.
Um, sorry, Rihanna.
Rihanna, yeah.
Yeah.
Uh, and 20% shy Ronnie.
But there are some crazycameos at the end of this one.

(56:43):
Well, there's one cameo in particular.
There's one
cameo.
I feel like it's also just onecrazy cameo for you specifically
because you love this man.
Like, I think for most of theaudience they'd be like, okay, cool.
Like, sure, but you are like yippee.
Yeah.
So when Rihanna leavesthe bank with the money
shy, Roni also because he's incompetent, does shoot himself in the foot.

(57:05):
Yeah.
And he is like screwingup the, the hold up.
So around it's just like,I'll just do this myself.
I'm just gonna leave and leave you here.
But she comes back for the money.
She goes, hold up, forgot this money.
Um, she comes back and she's like,I'm gonna have sex with this man.
And that man is John Ham,star of, you know, mad Men.

(57:28):
Mad Men.
Yeah.
Like all around, you know, icon of.
Early 2010s, late two thousands.
Mm. You know, male culture, you know?
Yeah.
And he does
the goofiest look on his face.
Yeah.
He, and he's
doing exactly Don Draper.
He's wearing the suit.
He's looks exactly like him.
Uh, but John Ham is obviously likea massive SNL fan and has a lot

(57:50):
of comedy work of varying quality.
Mm-hmm.
But yeah, clearly hethinks he's quite funny.
But in this cameo role,I think he smashes it.
It's only like three seconds long.
He basically, Rihanna is like, Iforgot this money also, this guy,
come on, we're gonna have sex.
And John Ham just turns to the cameraand does this like, really goofy,
excited smile as Rihanna in like, her, like pinstripe, fedora, like cropped

(58:13):
suit get up, which is so Leigh, she haslike the red, the red hair just leaves.
Um,
there is a gag during Shi Roni, uh,where Shi too, sorry, where, um,
Brianna, Brianna tells Shi Roni toimagine everyone in the room naked
because he is so nervous itmight help him to speak up.
And then Andy Sandberg has a huge, like, pants, like comically large.

(58:37):
Yeah.
Uh, and Rihanna does the Adlib.
She goes boner alert, which I think Iknew about from you, although I'm not sure
you, I don't feel like I've ever, I feellike when would I, but I feel like I knew
it, but I don't think I, anyone is reallyaround me that into SNL at the time.

(58:57):
So I do think it's viayou, but I feel like I
need to clarify that.
I wouldn't, I I haven'tsaid that in the context of
No, it would be youdoing like Rihanna voice.
Um,
I don't know if I do that either.
Look,
but maybe it's just so iconicthat I instantly felt like, you
know, I'd known it my whole life.
I Yeah.
I was surprised that you werelike, oh, that's what that's from.
And I'm like, where would youhear boner alert out of context?

(59:21):
Yeah.
But that's good.
So I had this at number nine.
Mm-hmm.
And I do think a big part of itis that Rihanna just hearing her
do the comedic bits, she has suchan iconic voice and delivery.
Like even if the material is not superfunny and I don't actually really care,

(59:41):
or like the shy Ronnie character mm-hmm.
She like carries the concept of thevideo and it made it into my top 10.
Okay.
My number four is Finest Girl.
That's the bin Large song that'snumber four for me as well.
So yeah.
This is from Pop Star.

(01:00:02):
Never Stop Popping.
Yeah.
The Lonely Island.
Like Justin Bieber spoof film.
Yeah.
Um,
which we mentioned before.
Yeah.
Which we think is really good.
So, and this
was released as a standalonemusic video, so I felt comfortable
including it in the top 10.
Mm-hmm.
But as you might guess from, wellactually you probably, there's no way
to guess unless you've heard this, but

(01:00:23):
if you just knew that itwas called Finest Girl Yeah.
You would have no idea.
Yeah.
Well, when it, when it, itappears in the movie, when we
saw the first time in the movie,
our mouths were a gap.
We were, I think we wereborderline in tears.
I think We thought it was like, it'sso, so I will say, if you haven't
seen Finest Girl, pause the pod nowand just go listen to it, uh, for the

(01:00:47):
two to three minutes long that it is.
'cause I think it does benefitfrom the, the surprise element.
Yeah.
But do that, and nowwe're gonna talk about it.
Yeah.
So
it opens and it's like atypical pining like pop song.
Um, Andy Sandberg in character istalking about how he's met, like the
finest girl ever, you know, la la la la.

(01:01:08):
Uh, and then he's like, knew she wasa freak when she started talking.
She said, fuck me, like,we fucked Bin Laden.
And you're like, what?
And it launches into the rest of thesong, the chorus, especially, uh,
which is like heavily military themed.
'cause in character in the film.
He's like, we need a win.
And what do Americans love?

(01:01:30):
You know, the military.
So we're gonna combine the killingof a summer bin Laden, which
everyone, everyone was jazzed about.
Yeah, exactly.
With, uh, my like catchy pop rhythms.
And so he's very much doing extendedmetaphor about having sex, but comparing
it to the killing of a Sam bin Laden.

(01:01:52):
It's so funny.
It's so silly.
And also like.
The, the way the music video isdone, because he's in character
as this like mega pop star.
He's like, again, you know, like aJustin Bieber, he is doing this song
and singing it like so earnestly inhis like full like pop star, get up
with girlies in like little tiny army

(01:02:16):
Yeah.
Outfits.
And they're doing like, really, I would say quite like
sexed up choreography to it.
It's just, uh, there's something about it.
It's, it really, it really bangs, I wouldsay favorite lines or favorite moments
is she's harboring a fugitive that ass.
And then what, what's thefollowing lines after?

(01:02:37):
And my
justice, sorry.
And my justice will be punitive.
I'm a smash.
And then she asked me toterrorize that per se.
I, that's the one
I think about a lot.
Yeah.
I feel like we started sayingthat after we saw it and I think
we, and we saw that movie likea couple years ago now, I think.
Yeah.
And we still, we still referencethis song in our household.

(01:03:00):
I think about yeah, harboring afugitive that as that has Yeah.
Quite.
I think about
it quite a lot.
Yeah.
Fucking, yeah.
Truly a banger I feel like.
What else can you say?
I mean,
not much.
Yeah.
Popstar did not do well at the box office.
Tragic.
Which is a bit sad.
Turns out millennials don'tlike going to the cinema.

(01:03:21):
But, uh, definitely one thatyou should seek out and watch.
'cause I think it wouldhold up really well.
Yeah, it's really good.
I feel like they should do, Ithink there is opportunity with
the recent rise in memes online.
I think they could do a sequel.
Saddam Hussein, you know,Saddam Hussein hiding spot.

(01:03:41):
You are you, you aware of the meme?
Yeah.
I'm aware they could do
like another take on.
Yeah, no.
Um, well he sort of died.
This is my official
pitch too, and he said no, I think he
died much earlier.
Yeah.
But do like a throwback, maybe.
Maybe get Justin, Tim Blake on the track.
Yeah, I mean, I did want to, theydid do in like 2007 that like a

(01:04:01):
love song to the dictator of Iran.
Oh, that one sucked at the time.
And we both really didn't like it.
It was really, it's funny.
Very funny.
It
wasn't funny.
It was very
strange.
So yeah, I do think it's kindof, and maybe of the higher ones.
Yeah.
I think the, the politicalcomedy has gotten a lot sharper.
Um, but, you know, yeah.
You should message Andyand tell him to do that.

(01:04:22):
I'll, I'm sure he'd love it'll.
Yeah.
Um, what's your number three?
Ooh, good question.
Let me grab up my list.
My number three is Dick in a box.
Dick in a box.
Okay.
I obviously had dick ina box at number seven.
Mm-hmm.
But take it away.
Step one, cut a hole in a box.

(01:04:44):
Two fu junk in that box.
Three.
Make open the box.
So you like Dick in a box?
Well, not as much as me, maybe.
No, I do really like this up.
The Justin Timberlake
Yes.
Um, videos.
I think he's their bestcelebrity collaborator.
Mm-hmm.
Um, but yeah, I maybe prefersome of his other collaborations

(01:05:09):
with The Lonely Island.
We're getting
quite high up, aren't we?
Yeah.
I think I did also make a prediction,uh, off, off, off the mic that I
predicted that you would have allthree of the Justin Timberlake
songs, uh, in your top 10.
And I just, this is the original one.
I do think.
Yeah, it, I I do enjoy it.

(01:05:30):
I don't want to spoil anythingelse on my list, but I, I just
think it really hits and I wassort of like, oh yeah, Dick Inbox.
It's a classic lonelyisland song, you know?
But we'll see how it holds upafter listening to everything else.
And it still did.
I still was like, yeah, Ithink it's, it's stronger.
Honestly, you could probably swapFinest Girl and Dick in a box for me.

(01:05:51):
I feel like they're kind of on par,but it's not the, you know, the top 25.
It's top 10.
So I had to, I had to put it above,'cause I just think it's so iconic
and I think it does get, we shouldprobably explain the concept.
Sorry.
Yeah.
At the video.
Yeah.
I would just say this was written forthe 2006 Christmas episode of SNL.

(01:06:12):
Yeah, that makes sense.
So the concept is it's AndySandberg and Justin Timberlake,
and they're in like an eighties.
They're doing, it's like a nineties.
It's a nineties r and b.
Yeah.
Parody.
They also have these insane littlesunglasses and like facial hair combos.
Yeah.
It's very
r Kelly.

(01:06:32):
Yeah.
They look kind of crazy.
R Kelly Diddy, the Lonely Island.
Have some choice.
Uh.
Well, isn't hiphop and
RB influencers?
Oh,
you're talking about influencers?
Diddy is actually inYeah, one of his songs.
He, he gets a cameo.
Yeah.
Which is crazy.
It was a very bad song.
So let's talk about it.
It was very bad.
Um, but they're in this like a getupand they're talking about, you know,

(01:06:54):
it's the holidays and they have, youknow, they're with their partners.
It's Maya Rudolph and Kristen Wig areplaying the girlfriends in this clip.
And it's like we, we need toget them something special that
conveys all of our love to them.
Um, and then the revealis it's a dick in a box.
Like, I'm not gonna buy you a diamondring, says in the title, you know, I'm
not gonna buy you some fancy thing.
I'm gonna give you somethinglike truly special.

(01:07:16):
It's my dick in a box.
Um, and it's very comical.
I think the version on YouTubehas the audience like reaction and
the audience is laughing a lot.
Which, I mean, it is obviouslylike live audience taping.
Well, when they aired theyactually couldn't say Dick on tv.
Oh, it's censored.
So censored.
And they released the uncensoredversion at the same time on YouTube,

(01:07:37):
which they had to go to like.
The CEO of, um, NBC to get approvedbecause then afterwards, um, the FCC,
which is like the, not the censorshipgroup, but you know, like the, the
stand, the Standards and practiceboard in the US were like, by releasing
videos online, US circumventing, like broadcasting guidelines.

(01:08:00):
Oh.
And it was like a, you know, acontroversy like we used to have
when stuff got aired on tv Yeah.
That people thought was bad.
Um, but this was obviouslylike a really big viral hit.
Probably like in terms of step upsfrom Lazy Sunday, this is probably like
their next level of would say start.
I would say this is
probably, most peopleknow about Dick in a Box.

(01:08:21):
It's like, probably when you think ofLonely Island, I would say it comes up in
people's like, yeah, top three they wouldreference along, along maybe some others
that we didn't like as much, but it did
win an Emmy.
Mm. Which I thoughtwas really quite funny.
Um, like obviously the category of.
Uh, music on tv.
Mm. Not super competitive, but Ithat doesn't mean that, um, the

(01:08:43):
Lonely Island have won more Emmysthan The Wire in its entire run than,
uh, community in its entire run.
Yeah.
You know,
I, I'm only surprised about The Wire.
I don't know if, but that's,that's the discussion for
maybe another type of podcast.
I'm not a big community fan, you know?
Yeah.
I'm not gonna take, I'mnot taking the bait.
Yeah.
But there's some othercool stuff in this video.

(01:09:04):
Maya Rudolph appears again,um, because it is, yeah.
She looks
so beautiful in this video.
Yeah.
Can I just say, I mean, she's still
hot.
Oh, no.
Obviously, like, she's stunning.
But like, in this video particularly, she has this like beautiful,
like cherry red, like lip gloss.
Yeah.
And it's like, start with likebig, like curly, voluminous hair.
'cause again, it's meant to belike early nineties kind of vibe.
So it looks really good.
And this is the first in a seriesof collaborations between the Lonely

(01:09:28):
Island and Justin Timberlake, um, wherethey do these weird characters with
their little facial hair and glasses.
Um, the wig
on.
Um, Andy in particular is really good.
Like
they look crazy.
Yeah.
But it's um, very goodand it's a very good song.
Yes.
It's really catchy.
Look, I think that there'sMagic Hannah Box A yay
JT must be involved on theproduction of Base, the writing.

(01:09:52):
Yeah.
And at least in the productionof all the songs he worked on.
Because
they sound like JT songs.
Yes.
Yeah.
So they're very listenable.
Um, and I think that really helpswith it, like breaking through.
'cause like there are some parodysongs which are like funny and
there are some parody songs thatlike Succeed as a example of the

(01:10:13):
song in its own genre, you know?
And we don't like some of theLonely Island stuff, um, where
it's like frat rap, like it'svery Beastie Boys influenced.
Mm-hmm.
But I think this stuff with jt, I'mnot gonna listen to it outside the
context of recording this episode.
But I think it stands along with like therest of his, it's Cat two thousands work.
Exactly.
If we
were in like a, if we were at likea, a party or something, or like

(01:10:37):
a, you know, like, it's like kindof like a wedding reception vibe.
Yeah.
If someone like, put thison, I'd be partying for sure.
It's, it's a really fun one.
So that was my number three.
Dick in the box.
And you're number nine?
Yes.
Mm-hmm.
What is your, ah, sorry.
It was my number seven.
Oh, number seven.
Sorry.
Getting my numbers mixed up.

(01:10:57):
I'm joking about the numbers.
You have no idea whatthat is in reference to
No.
Explain.
No.
Fine.
Um, my number three is jizz in my pants.
What,
what are
you
s
Okay.
I said I liked it at the time.
Yeah.
I suppose it wasn't onmy, this a surprise.
I forgot about it.
I, because I didn't put it in my top 10.

(01:11:18):
Yeah.
And so there was no opportunity for youto be like, this is higher on my list.
Gizz in my pants.
Really?
This is,
I think the only big memeable.
Lonely Island song.
This is
like a boss or I'm on a boat.
Te Well,
no 'cause So just to give somecontext, I put, um, like a
boss at number 30 on my list.

(01:11:41):
Um, and I really did not like it at all.
I was like, this, if you likethe American office, you'd
probably like, love this song.
Whoa.
And I put, I'm on a boat atnumber 25 and I think like
broadly I'd wrap all of those.
And the same with, I just had sex.
I would wrap them up in a, like tryingtoo hard to capture virality bucket.
Like they're very simple.

(01:12:03):
The chorus is like, I feel formulaicand that it, it's like an expression of
something that's like shocking and, butit's like, you know, they yell it out.
So especially when I'm in a boat andobviously like very annoying people.
Really shout
to T-Pain though.
Captured that.
Yeah, I do like tpa.
T-Pain is fine.
No issue with T-Pain Banger.
Um,
winner of the mask Singer.
And obviously the people are like, well, yeah, the chorus of jizz

(01:12:24):
in my pants is jizz in my pants.
Yeah.
Which is the same.
Yeah.
But this, I think the musicality, there'sa lot more here that I like in that
it's like a parody of the pet shop boys.
Mm-hmm.
Which is like obviously a groupin terms of, you know, I quite
like their musical output.
Mm-hmm.
Sort of 1980s.
Okay.
UK synth pop.

(01:12:45):
Okay.
And so I, I like the commitmentthat they made towards like,
parroting that specific genre.
Mm-hmm.
Notable.
'cause like Andy Sandberg is notin it, it's our other two boys.
He is in it.
He is?
What does he do?
Yes.
He has the weird like, vampire color thing.
Oh
wow.
Okay.
Embarrassing yourself.
Embarrassing.
Check yourself.

(01:13:05):
I must have got my notes mixed up.
He's it because he does have the,the vampire, um, color thing.
Yeah.
'cause it goes, it was a film, if I recall.
It was a horror film.
Yeah.
And he has like a, there's a part in themusic video where Andy Sandberg is styled.
With his like, I don't know.
He's like, yeah, he looks like a vampire.
He collar turned up to look like avampire for no really discernible reason.

(01:13:26):
It's not really related to the rest of it.
I just think that one shot isreally funny and that's probably
the funniest part of this for me.
I just think, okay, no, keep going.
No, you
don't.
You are so well, tell mewhy you don't like it.
I like, I remember, okay,
when he came on and he saidit was a film, it was a horror
film and he had his color up.
I feel like you had a reaction.

(01:13:46):
Yeah.
I
just said, I think that's thefunniest part, but like, I think,
okay, listening to the song, again, it had been a long time.
I, this for me was one which Iheavily associated with like boys I
like, like my friends, like youngerbrothers who I knew who listened to
this and thought it was like so funny.
And I was like, you're annoying.

(01:14:07):
'cause I was like 15 and they were 13.
Yeah.
And I was like, oh God.
Yeah.
But that doesn't mean it's bad.
No.
But like I obviously, like you saidwith like, like a boss or like I'm
on a boat, you build an association.
So upon a re-listen, I did think thesong was, but I think I had this maybe
like number 15 or something like that.
It was like not that far downmy list, but not in my top 10.

(01:14:28):
I just think that the gag relies on thefunniness of like premature ejaculation
and I don't think it's that funny.
Um, and I also think there's like a bitof a like, I don't know, I guess it's
sort of like in the same like levelof comedy as like, again, like you
said, I just had sex or I'm on a boatwhere I was like, is this that funny?

(01:14:48):
I do think the quality of thesong is good, I will admit.
But I think past the initial liketwo verses where they then like are
cutting themselves off to be like, opena window and a breeze rolls in and I,
Jews in my past, I da da da and theJews and it like cuts in and I get that.
That's the joke is that.
It's, it's more and more likemundane things that cause them

(01:15:09):
to, to jizz in their pants.
I'm loving my internetfootprint right now.
Um, but, uh, uh, like it'sjust, it's just not for me.
Okay.
Like, it's fine.
It's good.
Probably our biggest split.
Hey.
Um, I don't think it was that far.
Well, I suppose this is your number two.
My number three.
Your number three.
Okay.
Strange.

(01:15:30):
But yeah, it's, it's fine.
Okay.
What is your number three?
My number three is, I thinkI just did my number three.
I stick in a box.
Okay, cool.
What's your number two?
You
all over the shop?
Uh, my number two is here I go.
Mm.
That's my number two aswell as you predicted.

(01:15:52):
Oh, wow.
Yeah.
Wow.
Okay.
So.
Well, let's talk about it then.
Who?
I was like, who's gonna take the lead?
Do you wanna take the lead?
No, you can take the lead.
I just said mine.
Oh my gosh.
Thank you.
Um, here I go.
Is the, one of the mostrecent Lonely Island songs.
Sorry,
just before we move on, Ji and My Pantsdoes have a Justin Timberlake cameo,

(01:16:13):
but he doesn't sing it.
No, but he's just in it, but
he's still present, you know?
Okay.
Well just probably adds tothe quality of the song.
Don't think so.
Okay.
Sure.
I don't, I'm not even a,I just think it's fine.
I just think it's downlike with like a boss.
For me it's in that
kind of, whoa.
Yeah.
Sorry.
I sorry.
But the one moment in like aboss where he fucks a fish.

(01:16:34):
It's funny.
Yeah.
Or when they have the, the clipart of like Andy Sandberg's
head bombing the Russians.
I just think delivering out ofcontext, this stuff is so strange.
Jizz in my pants in like rp BritishEnglish is much more pleasant to
listen to than I. The fake RickRoss like a balls a hundred times.

(01:16:56):
Yeah.
Obviously
that's cringey, but
it's just very grated.
But
the, but I think that theprogression of that song is stronger
because it goes to more places.
But I think Jizz my pants becomesless funny as the song goes up, so.
Fair enough.
It's fine.
Okay.
As as, sorry please.
Back
to let us return, here I go.
Here I go.
If Trained Train Charlie xx.
Charlie
xx.
And we love Charlie XCX in thishousehold we are big Charlie, XCX fans.

(01:17:20):
Um, I've seen her live.
Have you?
I have not.
Uh, yeah.
Lucky me.
I got someone's, my, my brother, um,had an extra ticket and I got to go,
so I got to see her at the crash tour.
Woohoo.
Pre brat.
Yep.
Just, just a little, just alittle brag moment for me there.
Me and Charlie, friend of thepod Charlie xx, uh, this is, I

(01:17:46):
think one of the newest songs.
2024. Yes.
Second one, it's really recent.
Back after,
it was when Charlie was the musical guest.
I think she was guest and host.
Guest and host.
Yeah.
Uh,
did she do double duty?
Mm, no.
Mm-hmm.
Okay.
So she was, she was just the host,
just one or the other.
Yeah.
Okay.
I think, but this one was really good.

(01:18:06):
Sorry, I feel like mybrain's turning off me.
This one was really good.
Uh, it is.
Nope, she was double duty.
She hosted and performed.
Wow.
Yeah.
So some might say I'ma bit of an SNL head.
You might see me on the live fromNew York subreddit from time to time.
Nah, I, I actually don't like SNL guys.
Um, but you were saying hater,
hater artist.

(01:18:27):
I look, I just think live sketch andsketch generally is, um, it's not
very rewarding as a viewer becausethese guys obviously do a show week,
so they don't get a lot of time to,you know, put the ideas together.
And, but I think that'swhere the magic happens.

(01:18:47):
It's about quantity over qualitymight view, but sometimes they just
capture the lightning in a bottle.
Yeah.
But the thing is, you can just watchthose funny highlights on YouTube
and not have to sit through an hourof, um, less than impressive things.
But I want, take me back third time.
Here I go.
Can you tell us what the music video is?
PO is off the rails today.

(01:19:07):
Um, here I go is about AndySandberg being a white suburban dad.
I guess it's not evenclear that he's a dad.
I think he's an empty nester to be honest.
Yeah, because he has like gray hair.
Yeah.
He has like a, they put him in a wigwith like a little streak of gray hair,
which is particularly tasty looking.

(01:19:28):
Um, sorry.
That was so creepy.
I'm so sorry.
To Andy Sandberg, I love andrespect your union with your
wife, who you love so much.
I'm so sorry.
Um, I'm appreciating in a respectful way.
Um, and it is about him basicallybeing a, a neighborhood snitch.
Um, along with his wife, played by Charlie XCX.
Yeah.
So the here I go isreferring to here I go,

(01:19:51):
here I go, reporting
you, I'm you to the cops.
Um, Charlie comes into the videolike a third of the way through,
basically as like the trophy wife.
Mm.
And she's, uh, similarly enthusiastic.
She also has a really good wig.
Yeah.
Reporting people to the cops.
Yeah.
She looks like really good.
But it's Charlie X cx, likeshe kind of always does.

(01:20:12):
We love her.
Yeah.
Um, but this year I also had a numbertwo, so I really quite like it.
Um, it's not like a rap song.
No.
And I think like thetrend is that we favor
they're more pop.
Yes.
Yeah.
We do.
Because
I, I think that like the guys have, andlike some of their virality is due to

(01:20:34):
this, like with their biggest songs,is they are pretty good hook writers.
And I think the hook here is.
Like very classically catchy, like has a big sing along energy.
Mm. Um, but I also personallyrelate to the Yeah.
Talk
about your personal relationship.
The thing
is, the song could be like really badbecause you're like, well, you know,

(01:20:57):
calling the police on my neighbors, like,
yeah, we, and it's like a white guy.
Yeah.
Calling the cops the optics of that.
But it's okay.
'cause they clear that upreally quickly, don't they?
Um, and it's like you knew that, they were like, well, this is going
to be received negatively given likethe, the climate of police relations,

(01:21:18):
you know, in the United States.
Mm-hmm.
Uh, so they literallyinclude, is it Colin Jost?
Is that
guy?
Yeah.
Colin Jost.
It's, um, can just tell
us who he is.
Colin Jost is the, is a cast memberof SNL, but he primarily slash
like really only does weekendupdate, which is the new segment.
And he is also married to ScarletJohansen, which I only referenced

(01:21:39):
because, um, they frequently makejokes on the show about how it's like
insane that like Scar Joe is obviouslyvery slay, very hot, uh, and they just
make deprecating jokes at Collin'sexpense that he is married to Scar Joe.
And she's like more talented than him,
he's pretty good looking, you know.
Yeah.
He's like, he's hotter than Ryan Reynolds,
Colin.

(01:21:59):
Yeah.
And he's
probably a lot cooler
in this house.
We hate Ryan Reynolds.
Ryan Reynolds was in a lonelyarm video one that we both really
disliked and, um, it's, we didn't eventhrew it on the ground watching it.
Yeah.
We didn't even finish watching.
Threw it on the ground.
Yeah.
And then you're like,Ryan Reynolds is in it.
And I'm like, well.
Too bad.
It would've been even lower on mylist if we got to the end of it.

(01:22:19):
Uh, but the line, so, uh, Andy's like,I know you're not supposed to do this
anymore, talking about calling the cops.
And he says, but does it help you toknow that who I snitched on was white?
And then the rest of his verses includinghis chorus, uh, the funniest line he,
when he's doing his big sing on momentis, uh, I'm reporting you to the cops.

(01:22:41):
I'm calling the pigs.
And then he is like, on a fur low white.
Oh yeah.
And it's just Colin being arrested.
Um,
yeah.
They also continually then refer to thecops as piggies throughout the song.
Yeah.
Especially
her verse is incredibly pick piggy fame
in the city.
Yeah.
Pig focused.
Yeah.
Banger.
Um, and it sort of ends with everyonedoing a bridge into the chorus.

(01:23:04):
And it's like they're on the street oftheir very like suburban American set with
a full dance number with Charlie and Andy.
Mm-hmm.
Uh, leading that.
Um, and that's obviously pretty cool towatch and given you, imagine they only
had the week to do this, where Charliewas also like rehearsing for SSNL proper

(01:23:24):
and, um, her musical performances.
Mm-hmm.
Like it's, uh, a veryprofessional looking production.
It looks really good.
Yeah.
Um, I love this song.
We've, we sang it a lot.
We watched it like the weekit came out on SNL together.
Yeah.
And we've been singing it aroundthe house, I think since then.
Here I go.

(01:23:46):
Okay.
Bang.
On the big moment.
What is your number one?
My, do we wanna do your numberone or my number one first?
'cause it was my number two.
Okay.
We'll do my number one.
'cause you know it, mynumber one is Mother Lover.
Yeah.
Which is featuring Justin Timberlake.
Again, IM
mother lover.
You are a mother lover.
We should fuck each other's mothers.
Yes.
The concept is the return of our nineties.

(01:24:09):
R Kelly style boys, Andy Sand.
We really stop saying r Kelly.
And they come up with a plan to comforteach other's respective mothers because
who are Yeah, they're widowed, played by,um, Susan Sarandon and Patricia Clarkson.
So two hot older womenand certified milks.

(01:24:31):
Yeah.
Yeah.
The song as the, the title suggests, involves both the boys wooing the other's
mother, and showing her a good time.
And it is broadly obviously's.
Very funny, but also quite a sex positive.
Yeah.
Progressive viewpoint.
Like your spring break anthem.
Mm. But I like it naturally as wellbecause it is another very Justin

(01:24:56):
Timberlake 2000 sounding track.
Yeah,
it's a banger.
It's so good.
JT brings the heat.
The production.
It like, he does these like
crazy.
He goes like, it would be myhonor to be on your stepfather.
He does like full jt, whichmakes it so much funnier.
Yeah.
He also has his like, singing style.

(01:25:17):
He, and you know, tech, liketechnically more about singing than I
do, but he has the ability to, yeah.
Like he has a lot of range, but hedoesn't lose his enunciation, so
Yeah.
He does good.
Uh, falsetto.
Yeah.
Yeah.
As like a, a comedic or like, even likea musical theater performer, that's
like really important because likethe words matter more so than if you

(01:25:40):
are just purely a musician where like, there are some musicians, you don't
even know what they're saying, butit's about like cultivating a vibe, you
know, like the voice is an instrument.
Yeah.
You hear what, you know what I'm saying?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Cool.
No, you're great.
Okay.
I just didn't want to, youknow, speak out of my depth on.
You know, performancemunicipality, I mean,

(01:26:01):
yeah, Justin Timberlake has a,um, you know, not, not addressing
certain behaviors of jt, whichwould steer clear from talking
about, but speaking strictly on his,
he's
not canceled.
Is he?
He's,
I'm giving shy Ronnie.
Oh,
me, when I have to talk about jt.

(01:26:24):
It's
the first JTV is literallylike 20 years ago almost.
It's so crazy.
And he kind of still looks the same.
So, yeah.
Um, the magic of Hollywood.
So Mother lover.
Yeah.
And when, which one?
That was like my number.
I think I, yeah.
I had it higher than, oh, no, I didn't.
I had a little lower than Dick in the box.
I had it at number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

(01:26:45):
My number six.
Um, I really like my love.
I think the music video for thisalso is extremely funny because
they, the way they film it, they getthe, uh, the two, the two ladies.
To wear like sunglasses and do like 90star like a music video posing around
what seems to be like a public park.
Mm.
And it's really weirdand I really like it.

(01:27:05):
Um, and especially the, the bridgewhere it goes, it would be my
honor to be your new stepfather.
It would be my honor tobe on your stepfather.
Kind of funny.
Yeah.
This also Emmy nominated
Mm.
And was a big viral hit.
Mm-hmm.
Um, released the daybefore, mother's Day 2009.

(01:27:27):
Mm.
Um, yeah.
'cause every Mother's Day needs a mother's night.
That is,
that's the lyrics.
That is the lyrics.
That is what it's like.
Um, sorry.
I
hope I'm doing a good job doing these,um, slightly cringe worthy impressions,
but it's, it's our way around copyright,so, so I can give you a little taste.
They'll still be,
we'll still be copyright struck.
Um, yeah.
I sound so much like JT that I'll beflagged in the YouTube, uh, system.

(01:27:50):
All right.
This episode
we'll never see the light of day.
Mother Lover.
Mm-hmm.
One.
You're number one.
I predicted that itwas gonna be threesome.
What is your number one?
It's Threeway.
Oh, sorry.
Threeway.
But yeah.
Well, it's three Way I did get it.
Yeah.
You, you, you, you okay.
Threeway?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Is the third.
Hang on, I think to this point, final.
Mm-hmm.

(01:28:10):
Justin Timberlake collaboration.
Yes.
With The Lonely Island.
Yes.
But it's not just them.
They get another celebrityguest to join them.
And that is Lady Gaga.
Yeah.
And it's so good.
Um, this one is also kindof a nostalgia pick for me.
'cause I really, really liked itwhen I was in, uh, high school and
my group of friends were all, weall really liked this song, and we

(01:28:30):
would, uh, you know, do it together.
We could do it as like a, asa bit with multiple of us.
Almost
like you were the lonely island.
It's
almost like we were the lonely island.
Yeah.
But, um, I just think the entiresong from start to finish is
really funny, but also a good song.
And that I think is really our.
Criteria now, you know, for whatmakes a good Lonely Island song.

(01:28:52):
I had it at
14, so Wow.
You do, I also quite like it.
I think that's
actually the biggest gap.
Okay.
One 14.
Yeah, actually, probably.
Yeah.
So what, what made you put it?
I just feel Gaga is shoehorned in,
whoa.
Like,
I think that she does a better actingperformance here than in House of Gucci.
The bar is very low.

(01:29:14):
Um, yeah, I just think that motherlover given it, predates it and
there is like, it's, I, I justdon't think that's three way.
Which official Title Three Way Bracket?
The Golden Rule.
The Golden Rule, um, bracket is as Ijust, I'm, I have to give more points

(01:29:34):
to Mother Lover 'cause it did itearlier and I think it did it better.
I, for me, I'm like, I think this isthe culmination of their collaboration.
I think it's the best one.
Uh, obviously it's my number one.
Can you explain what the Golden Rule is?
For the, yeah, the golden
rule is essentially like, well the lyricis it's not gay if it's in a three way.
Yeah.
So it's about how you can, if youare having sex with a woman in a

(01:29:59):
three way and another man is there, then that's not gay, which true.
Well, I mean, I think not reallyhaving, there's nothing gay about
having sex with a woman, so.
Yeah.
Fair enough.
But also like the, uh, the kind of the,the joke of the video sort of in the
middle, it is revealed that as they, they go in, they are both meeting up

(01:30:22):
with a woman, uh, to enjoy relations andthen they realize they're both at the
door and they're like, hold up player.
What are you diggity doing here?
I should diggity ask you thesame lady Gaga invites them
in, says, I hope that's okay.
I wanna enjoy my time with you both.
But then there is, uh, a bitof a, I guess a bit where.
After they're singing the chorus, lady Gaga has just left and it is

(01:30:45):
just JT and, uh, Andy Sandberg inthe bed and Gaga walks in on them
while she's eating a bowl of cereal.
And she's like, you guys are still here.
Um, so obviously, yeah.
I also think there's a really good linehere, which is, um, this rule dates
back the Golden Rule to ancient Greece.
Talk about Caar.
And I think that is a really banging
line.
It is funny.

(01:31:05):
It is funny.
It's true.
What do you mean
the Romans be, well, they,
the, the joke I think is that they'retalking about, oh, it's ancient Greece.
Sorry.
Yeah, but Caar is not Greek.
No, I just, I, yeah.
Oh yeah.
So it works, works in multiple ways
talking about seas.
Okay.
Alright.
Sorry.
Just didn't know my, didn't knowmy ancient Roman ancient Greece.

(01:31:27):
I am from ancient Greece.
So that's it for top 10.
Woo-hoo.
We didn't talk about some of the big ones.
I'm on a boat.
Yeah, well I talk, talked about negatively.
Do you like I'm on a boat.
It's fine.
Okay.
Like, yeah, it's, it'sfunny when you're on a boat
Mm.
To do an Instagram story and putthe, the music song, I'm on a boat.

(01:31:50):
'cause like you are, and that'skind of the funniest thing about it.
Don't think that's funny.
But
I think, think to differ.
I think it's come back round whereit was like not funny for a while.
And now I think it's like funny again.
Ironically, if I went on a boat, ifI like went on the, the Sydney ferry
and I put a story up and put I'm ona boat, especially if it was like

(01:32:12):
a normal picture of me standing.
Mm. And then I put thesong, I'm on a boat.
That would be funny.
Give it a go.
Probably not.
Yeah.
Uh, you know what?
I will, okay.
I'm just not on boats very often, but ifI was to go on a boat, I would do that.
It'd be kind of cringe.
It.
It's too, it's a level of irony that I'moperating on, which is extremely high iq,

(01:32:32):
lonely island legacy.
Mm. What are your thoughts?
Well.
For me, they've alreadycreated such a legacy.
Obviously my number one song forthem is not one of their more recent
ones, but their recent songs havecrapped up to the top, I think.
I mean, they've
only had two recent songs.
I know there's the, there'salso three, the SN L at 51

(01:32:54):
1, it's not on the Wikipedia
page, but it's called like Anxiety, which is anyone who's ever worked
at SNNL has anxiety and I dothink that one's really funny.
It is having a moment at themoment because of the, it's way
worse than working in a coal mine.
That's where that meme is from.
Anyone didn't know?
Oh, I didn't
know it was a meme.
You didn't know it was a meme.
No.
My millennial boyfriend,

(01:33:16):
you didn't know about the, can youtake a pussy picture of your pussy?
You turn it around 5,000.
You didn't know about thatmeme until like a week ago.
That was so scary theway you just did that.
No, but I think what does, what doesthat say about your TikTok feed?
Hmm.
Hmm.
I mean the, it is really funny though.
Target of the meme is those type ofmen, so much like the lonely island, I'm

(01:33:36):
on the side of it's way worse than ofmocking, you know, toxic masculinity.
Sure,
sure, sure, sure.
There were, I actually sawpeople for the three way.
There were like actual paidjournalists who went writing about it.
Were like, I'm not sure aboutthe perspective of this song.
Are the Lonely Islandssaying that being gay is bad?

(01:33:58):
Um,
and it's like, no, but that's why Ithink their comedy holds up so well
because it's, they're not saying thatin the song because they're like,
they're not playing serious characters.
They're being like these like silly, like pickup artists, like 90 Style.
Like what?
What's the word for someone who's like,
well, I mean, the jokeis on men who are like.

(01:34:22):
Yeah.
Yeah.
Like, like basically the Romeos.
Yeah.
Yeah.
But basically
the joke is on people who are likeuncomfortable with their sexuality,
not on actual gay, gay people.
Yeah,
yeah.
No, exactly.
But yeah, so I guess to answerthe question, I think they really,
honestly are probably the, thelandmark creators in musical comedy.

(01:34:48):
They're kind of like thebenchmark in terms of what
success looks like in that space.
Yeah.
Um, and tie it back in about howmainstream media and YouTube kind
of have that connection becausetheir YouTube views are crazy.
Some of the highest we've talked abouton this podcast, actually, I think, yeah.

(01:35:11):
They've got like 150, 180 million onsome of their most popular tracks.
So, you know, and it's, it's alsowhere kind of YouTube is what.
Helped legitimize them in the eyes of,I think SNL in terms of, okay, like
this played well on the show, but wecan see that it's had legs online,
which means that there is a wideaudience of people who enjoy them.

(01:35:33):
Those people who willmaybe watch the show.
Let's do more sketcheswith the lonely island.
Like let's have them more leeway and liketrust them to do what's funny and then
equally now bring 'em back to YouTube.
I mean, one of the cool things Ithink that we can attribute to like
YouTube and digital platforms mm-hmm.
You know, it's rare that we sing thepraises of it, but we can have a moment

(01:35:55):
now where the analytics that SNL and othercreators obviously get when they publish
a YouTube video that includes us, um,is way more detailed than at the time.
Um, TV stations have.
When they receive Mm. The Nielsenratings, which is the company that does

(01:36:15):
ratings in the us um, where basicallylike to be a Nielsen contributor,
from my understanding, you signup and they like send you a box or
you like fill out a diary mm-hmm.
Of like the TV shows you are watching.
And so in the two thousands whenlike there was big online community
communities for shows like communityMm. And people will be like,

(01:36:36):
well, like I watch this online.
So my view isn't reflected byNielsen voters who are like
traditionally much older people.
Mm. Um, and so the TV networks wouldreally have a problem because like.
Their advertising desirabledemographic is like 18 to 39.

(01:36:57):
Mm-hmm.
But all of their Nielsenpeople are old, basically.
Mm-hmm.
And so they are green lightingand canceling shows based on this
data, which might not necessarilyreflect the preferences of their
desired advertising demographic.
Well plays right back to, uh, AndySandberg later on in his career having

(01:37:18):
Brooklyn nine Nine, which was likea massive, had such a massive fan
community and fan following, gettingcanceled and that online campaign
to bring Brooklyn nine nine back.
So I do think it speaksto the importance of
Yeah.
Your community and building that communityout of just necessarily like one space.
'cause they could have easily just beenlike, we're not uploading any of this
to the internet because it's on, like,it's owned by SNL, it's our property.

(01:37:40):
We're not gonna upload it.
But they chose to and that is what Yeah.
And I think honestly, this iswhat would lead to the current.
SNL strategy where theyupload everything to YouTube.
Yeah.
And like a lot of shows do that now.
Yeah.
Um, when they clip it up.
Because if it's like, if your content istopical, like it doesn't really have a
shelf life outside of the topical era.

(01:38:03):
And that's actually where the LonelyIsland is a pretty savvy investment
for SNL because like a song is so muchmore re consumable than a comedy sketch
where you already know the jokes.
Mm.
And how do you make moneyon YouTube by view time.
Mm. So, yeah.
You know,
so true.
You're learning so much.

(01:38:24):
I know.
Yeah.
I know.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Um, um, ask me about legacy,
legacy question mark.
Yeah.
For the Lonely Island
Legacy question mark.
Lonely Island, question mark.
Yeah.
I really like how the LonelyIsland create original songs.
Mm. Because so I think like all the parodyfor the most part we've heard so far.

(01:38:46):
There has been some original musicality.
Yeah.
But it's all very bad.
And then some of the parody songs areactual parodies of existing songs.
And so like the weird owl style, and Idon't mind that, but it's much harder.
But I think the reward is muchgreater when you do like an

(01:39:06):
original song, essentially.
Mm-hmm.
Um, and don't just basically riffon an existing song's popularity.
Mm-hmm.
And I think that like we saw with thoseYouTube views, like the rewards are way
greater because like if you're gonnalisten to, um, you know, I just had sex.
Mm-hmm.
You are listening to, I Just Had Sex.

(01:39:28):
Unlike Say I wanna listen to TikTokby Kesha, I'm not listening to.
The Midnight Beast parody song.
Do you remember that one?
Speak for yourself.
Yeah.
Well some of us knew that I had that on
my iPod.
Um, but like it's the samewith like the weird Owl stuff.
It's like, well, you know, I'mprobably never gonna listen to weird
owl's version over the original.

(01:39:49):
Oh,
okay.
But when there is nothing specificthat's parodying, when it's like an
original song, I'm still not gonna listento parody music, uh, in my free time.
But I would be moreinclined to listen to here.
I isn it on Spotify
and people are upset about it.
I was just seeing that as I wasresearching for this episode.
The one with Charlie xx, people, like, why isn't this on Spotify?
Because that's like, obviouslyit's got Charlie X cx.

(01:40:10):
Yeah.
It
might be a label thing.
Maybe it's Lonely Islanderhave an actual label.
Mm. Maybe.
Maybe.
Yeah, maybe.
Or Charlie's label.
Yeah, maybe, maybe Dunno.
But no, I it's on YouTube.
So true.
And if you have YouTubemusic, you can listen to it.
So just get yourself sorted.
Um, but I wanted to posit my theorythat, well, it's not really a theory.
I think we can pretty much saythis is pretty much the case.

(01:40:32):
'cause we can tell that SNL as a widerlike TV show has been influenced.
But Jack Sparrow and the Legendof Zelda Rap by Mosh came out
in like the same time period.
Mm. I'm not exactly, I'm justpulling it up quickly on my phone.
They're around the same time.
I don't know which came first.
Crazy if the Legend of Zeldarap was first, but equally like,

(01:40:55):
obviously the Lonely Islandhave made lots of music videos.
But I do think SNL slash Lonely Islandare a major, major influence on Smosh.
I'm, I wouldn't be surprised ifthey've acknowledged that somewhere.
I think
they're
an influence on.
Really most all of the comedy creators.
Well, I think that's what it isthough, in terms of, and you know,
not to be like these three whitemen are true representation on tv.

(01:41:18):
But in terms of like, if you are luckyenough to make it mainstream, then yeah,
you will obviously have a wider audienceand be able to influence children.
The talent of tomorrow, we say
luck, but I do sincerely just thinkthat the three of these guys are
funnier and smarter than the YouTubecreators that we have covered so far.

(01:41:41):
The content, like maybe it's a casethat they just didn't release as much,
but it's 'cause they didn't have to.
Yeah, because they hadmore stables career.
But isn't it like a, these lonelyisland videos are way better
as a collective than the comedycreators that we've watched so far.
Some of the lesser enjoyed ones for us.
I'm like, I don't know.

(01:42:01):
Yeah, look, I'll, I'll give you that.
The four is
way higher.
Sure, yeah, I'll give that to you broadly, but I do think it is a case of like
they just were earlier, like they areolder than Smosh by like quite a bit.
So when they were already doing thisSmosh, like still in middle school.
And I do think it is also a case of likeopportunity, like begets experience,

(01:42:23):
which gets you more opportunity.
Like if you are able to be on SNL in2005 and start making very like low
production videos and those starts todo like obviously yes they're talented
and I don't wanna discount that at all,but if you get your foot in the door
in that early way, which they did, ofcourse you're gonna get more opportunity
through being paid budget, whatever elseto practice your and hone your craft.

(01:42:51):
A hundred percent.
Yeah.
Do we think, uh, this mosh moviewill be better than Pop Star?
No agree.
What about
agents of secret stuff?
No.
Fair enough.
But was the budget for Pop Star like Yes.
Probably 10 times theamount for both of those.
So while it won't make the YouTube movielist in our hearts, it will be number one.

(01:43:13):
Yeah.
Cool.
Well that's episodeeight, the Lonely Island.
If you are a Philip DeFranco fan andyou're still listening at this point up
your beautiful bastards, uh, we do a bitat the end where I ask Lucy and she asked
me what we are subscribing to this week.
Mm-hmm.
So Lucy, what are you subscribing to?

(01:43:34):
I didn't have one prepared, soI'll just talk about the movie that
I fell asleep to last night that
works for me,
which was, uh, Sydney White, which is a Amanda Bees movie
from like the mid two thousands.
Um, it's a snow White interpretationwith, um, the recent release of
the Disney remake of Snow White.
I was like, what's anothersnow White, Sydney White?

(01:43:55):
Which is, yeah, I saw that on the,the player when I opened your laptop.
And I, it's pretty rare.
I literally was like, Ihave no idea what this is.
I have never heard of this movie ever.
It's, and I,
you know what bring back like, modernfairytale retail links 'cause they are
such cozy, comfy, like movies to watch, but it is a, it's like Snow White, but in

(01:44:19):
a, uh, college rush sorority like setting.
Okay.
So Amanda Bys is rushingfor this sorority.
Um, and then she ends up livingwith, uh, seven guys in their
creepy little frat house.
Oh, okay.
So they're not actual dwarves?

(01:44:40):
No, they're just seven.
So it actually more
progressive than the Disneyrecent adaption c they changed it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Based off criticism.
Yes.
Crazy.
Um, but Rachel Z is notthere, which is sad.
'cause I do like Rachel Zewell, but Amanda Bines is there.
Which is um, good.
She's very good in someof her early, early stuff.
And I will probably finish watchingit this afternoon because it's very

(01:45:02):
rainy and it's a very cozy chill movie.
Cozy maxing.
Yeah.
Cozy maxing.
Cool.
What about you?
What are you subscribing to this week?
This is
a literal subscription, guys.
'cause I have subscribedto a boutique gym chain.
Mm.
So not gonna say exactlywhich one, but which location?

(01:45:22):
Yeah, they have several.
If you live in Sydney, you can probablyfigure out what one it is or don't.
You don't need to do that.
Yeah, you don't need to figure out where.
But if you want,
if you wanna challenge,it's not where we live.
They have multiple locations.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Um, and
really we're kind of between, anyway,we're not gonna give you coordinates.
But
look, I, so I was going toPlus fitness, which is like a

(01:45:45):
nationwide sort of cheap gym.
Cha like chain.
I think like it's not quiteAnytime Fitness in that they
don't lock you into a contract.
But it is a case where they're like,we have so many locations and you
can use your past at any of them.
And I'm like, but why wouldI ever use my past besides at
the one that I live closest to?

(01:46:06):
You're not just using the segmentto a, your grievances, they're, but
I was, I was in like the, uh, likethe $20 a month, sorry, $20 a week.
Yeah.
Gym tier.
Mm-hmm.
Which in Australia is about thelowest you can get outside of sort of
contracting for longer or having anemployer subsidize your gym membership.
So when this new location of thisboutique chain opened, I signed

(01:46:32):
up for a one year contract, whichI've not done at a gym before, but
it was to secure cheaper pricing.
So I got a pretty good deal andhaving to no longer like, fight
for equipment with broccoli hairteenagers who never use a towel.

(01:46:53):
Sit on the equipmentthey're not using, don't put
the same, never racks the weights on theirweights so that when you are sitting at
the leg press and they are doing theirlike squats next to you and then they
start laughing and drop the weight andthen it like rolls off the side and rolls
towards you and nearly hits you in thehead while you're doing your leg press.
Something like that.
Yes.
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
Mm-hmm.
So yeah, many also like the, theroof wasn't repaired in the gym

(01:47:14):
for ages basically over summer.
I was like, my main attraction tothe pl, the plus fitness that I go to
is that the air con is really good.
It works.
Yeah.
Yeah.
And it's pretty low bar just to,you know, like my office has air con
and I don't have to pay to go there.
So they pay you
to go there actually.
Exactly, yeah.
And so like new locationhas opened, new gym.

(01:47:35):
It's pumping.
I have a class membershipfor the first time.
Mm. So I went to SPIN yesterday, whichum, was like, if you think the audio
quality on our mics is bad, imagine likeBritish working holiday visa gates scream
instructions at you and the gain is likea hundred percent and it's like clipping.

(01:47:58):
Um, and I was like, it's too early inour relationship for me to wear my ear
protection in the spin cycle class or to
advise them on
Yeah, I'm, I'm sure I went up.
I was like, you could just tweak it.
You could just, just putit a bit to the left.
We don't need to be that loud.
Mm-hmm.
Um, but you know, it does fireyou up, so do burn those calories.
Um, but yeah, so that's mysubscription for the week.

(01:48:21):
