پژوهشگران حوزه اقتصاد اسلامی معتقدند که جوامع اسلامی می‌توانستند وضعیت بهتری را تجربه کنند اگر به جای استفاده از علمی که در غرب پرورش یافته و بالیده به رعایت اصول اسلام و استفاده از آن‌ها روی می‌آوردند. اما نکته‌ای که حائز اهمیت است این است که تعریف و تصور دقیقی از اقتصاد اسلامی وجود ندارد و بخشی از این امر به خاطر این این است که تفاسیر مختلفی از آموزه‌های اسلام وجود دارد. چه تعاریفی از اقتصاد اسلامی وجود دارد و آیا می‌شود به شاخص‌ها و تعاریف منسجمی از آن دست پیدا کرد؟ چگونه می‌شود دستاوردهای اقتصاد اسلامی را موردبررسی قرار داد؟
