در حالی که انقلاب کینزی در حال بازنویسی سرفصل‌های درسی رشته اقتصاد بود، فریدمن عَلَم دفاع از اقتصاد لیبرال را برداشت. موضوع مناقشه همچنان همان موضوع مناقشه‌ی هایک و کینز بود. سوال اصلی این بود: دولت تا چه حد باید در اقتصاد دخالت کند؟ اما این بار شرایط تغییر کرده بود. پاسخ به این سوال دیگر چندان آسان نبود. نه ساموئلسون و نه فریدمن هیچ‌گاه تصور نمی‌کردند که دیالوگ آنها بیش از ۵۰ سال به‌طول انجامد.
