It's a mash-up week where we visit the second half of Exodus and the last section of Matthew and begin to uncover the similarities between the Exodus, the Tabernacle, the Golden Calf, and stories in the Matthew like the Sheep and the Goat, the Parable of the Talents, and the Resurrection of Jesus. We talk about the hard places where the law seems to contradict and we need clarity, the rebellions of the Israelites and what it means, and the grace of God in the midst of it all. We are still in the wilderness of Numbers. We close out two books of the Bible this week with Numbers and Mark, but there's a lot of good ground to cover.  We talk about the way we can meditate on Scripture, the call on our lives to be present, succession plans, and how to live and leave a legacy as a people faithful to God. We mix things up this week and meet up with Jesus in the introduction to Luke. We tether this strongly to the Old Testament, especially our Deuteronomy readings from this week. We consider the law and what it means, especially in light of Jesus, how to avoid idolatry (even from places we don't often consider), and look at violence in the Old Testament and how we can understand what God is doing in places that trouble us today.

These laws seem like harsh laws to us, but we talk about how we can interpret those laws and better understand and meditate on them for our own context. Welcome to the Promised Land! It's not at all what was expected, and we chat about Rahab and what she means for us. We also discuss the idea of the other and who our neighbor is. We wrestle with how the Old Testament authors use images of violence. Finally, We consider Jesus' words and the interesting organizational questions Luke poses for us to consider.

Today is a quick venture through 1 Kings. We catch up with the end of King David and we see the rise and fall of Solomon along with some future kings that cause some issues. In the midst of these kings, we see Elijah who begins to show us shadows of the Anointed One who is coming through miracles of abundance and resurrection. We have made it through 2 Kings and most of the history of Israel and Judah. We see the repeated sins of Jeroboam as well as the end of Elijah and stories about Elisha. These stories of the prophets help us see forward into the stories of Jesus in John. We spend some good time talking about the relevance of the church. We are beginning 1 Chronicles, so we reframe how we are looking at the history of Israel and the importance of this book. We look at the power of nostalgia and the way it can shape our past. Then, we begin Acts. We talk about the early church and the impact on our own church setting. We get into a lot of good discussion on how we live out our faith in light of the text.
