Cheyanne (00:00):
A lot of the conversations I have with small

(00:01):
business owners tend to get backaround the algorithm, because it
is something like the wind. It'salways changing direction, and
if you don't keep up with it,unfortunately, it really can
work against you. So as of thisepisode, April 2025 this is
what's working, and this is whatyou want to implement right
away, if especially yourengagement is dropping, and how

(00:23):
to make sure that you build itup.

Unknown (00:30):
Welcome to Social Media for small businesses. Are you
ready to turn social media intoa powerful marketing funnel that
drives growth, connectsauthentically with your audience
and boost sales. I'm CheyenneClayman, social media strategist
and agency owner here to helpyou transform your social media
into a tool for measurableresults. Each episode, you'll

(00:53):
get actionable strategies, reallife examples and proven
techniques to grow your brandand make an impact. So grab a
notebook and pen. It's time tomake social media work for you.
Have you noticed recently thatyour likes, comments and reach

(01:16):
have just taken a totalnosedive? No, the algorithm
doesn't hate you, but maybe whatused to work just isn't hitting
the same anymore. If you'refeeling frustrated, you're not
alone. This is exactly why Icreated this episode, because
social media platforms areconstantly changing, and if
you're not adapting with it,your engagement will suffer. But

(01:40):
don't worry. Today, I'm going tobreak down the top reasons your
engagement might be dropping, and perhaps most important, how
to fix it starting today. Sobuckle up if you're like me,
grab your favorite matcha orkombucha if you're a little more
fancy, and get ready to takenotes, because this is going to
transform your social media thisday. So if you're new to this

(02:02):
podcast, it's officially episode21 and I cannot believe that
it's here. I've been doing thispodcast once a week since it
started, so we're almost in ahalf a year together. But my
journey with social media andpodcasting did not start just
six months ago. I've been livingout, building my own brands for
over 10 years. Ever since Ilived and worked in Los Angeles,

(02:24):
I've really been passionateabout helping other small
business owners like cut throughall the crap to be honest, and
help just get really simplified, honest and realistic solutions
that are going to help amplifytheir business online and move
their social media forward. So alot of the conversations I have
with small business owners tendto somehow get back around the

(02:46):
algorithm, because it issomething like the wind. It's
always changing direction, andif you don't keep up with it,
unfortunately, it really canwork against you. So as of this
episode, April 2025 this iswhat's working, and this is what
you want to implement rightaway, if especially your
engagement is dropping, and howto make sure that you build it

(03:07):
up. Because higher engagementmeans more people, feeling seen,
feeling heard on your social andultimately, that's going to lead
to what you really want, whichis more business and more sales.
So just know first and foremost, that the algorithm, it
prioritizes conversations, notjust content. In the past, you
could push out a bunch ofcontent just over and over and

(03:28):
over, and it would tell thealgorithm, hey, you're a popular
account because you're producingmore. But one of the biggest
reasons engagement drops now, specifically on platforms like,
say, Instagram, Facebook andLinkedIn is because they now
change how they rank theirposts. They no longer rank it
based on consistency. It's moreranked on quality. So it's not

(03:50):
just about what you post, it'show much interaction your post
gets in right away. That is why,if you've listened to any other
episodes of this podcast, youknow, almost every single time,
I always emphasize how importantit is not to just post in Ghost.
So what that means in socialmedia, land and world is that
you don't want to just postsomething and then not give it

(04:11):
any attention. You should be thefirst comment underneath every
one of your posts. A reallyclever way to do that is to
create a second call to action. And why is it your second one?
Because you should have had onecall to action, a CTA, as you
may hear it in your actualcaption. So boost your algorithm
chances even more and put a callto action in the comments below

(04:35):
to get people talking. So oneway you can fix, or a couple
ways I would say that you couldfix this is not just by being
the first comment, but make surethat you post when your audience
is online. So you may bewondering, well, Cheyenne, how
the heck do I know that? Well, almost all of these apps
nowadays have insights to seeyour peak times. One thing I

(04:57):
love about a tool that we usewith our clients that.
Work with us monthly is we havethis tool that actually tells
that us across the board, whento post, because it tracks all
of the active times of everysingle one of their accounts and
tells us when to post so that wecan work smarter and not harder,
so that we can make sure that weare posting when that audience

(05:18):
is on and ready to engage.Another way you can fix this is
to respond to commentsimmediately. So this tells the
algorithm that your post isworth showing to more people.
Whenever I hop on and do anaudit of an account, it really
pains my heart when I seecomments left unnoticed, because
it's really like having aconversation with someone and

(05:40):
just leaving them hanging, youknow? Or when I talk with my
five year old, it's the worstwhen I'm having a conversation
with him and he's just staringblankly at me or ignoring me.
And to be honest, it can befrustrating, right? Any parents
out there listening? I'm sureyou can say, Amen, well, that's
exactly what your potentialcustomers are thinking and
feeling when you leave theircomment unaddressed, especially

(06:02):
for days or weeks on your post,so make sure you have someone
responding to these people sothat again, they're getting
their questions, they're gettingtheir comments seen and heard.
And also, another great tip, andto make sure that you
organically do this anyways, isbefore you post new content,
spend 10 minutes engaging withothers. Go on your most recent

(06:23):
posts, and even if no one'scommented, go look at the likes.
You can go click on likes andsee who's commented, and then go
and write on their pages, because that's gonna send a
notification to them and sayyour business wrote on their
comments, on their post or ontheir comment, and then they're
gonna come back and check andsee what have you been up to, so
they get a chance to see yournew content. And this is just

(06:46):
such a great way to warm up thealgorithm to your content. And
then I have a tip that basicallyis an overall way to fix it,
just long term. So we alreadytalked about when you post to
make sure you spend timeengaging with people right away
or say around that. But whatabout on the days that you're
not posting? Because socialmedia can work for you, even if

(07:09):
you don't post daily or not. SoI hope that you just took a big
there and realized that, youknow, for our clients, we
actually have a top package thatwe produce for people, and it's
four to five times a week, andthat would be our top package.
And so as you notice, we don'teven post every day a week for
our clients, but we do make surethat all posts and comments are

(07:34):
responded to within 24 hours. And a huge mistake I see people
doing when it comes to postingregularly on social is that they
post but they're not engaging. So again, always just coming
back to that, thinking aboutjust human nature, like when, in
person, you're with people, it'skind of, I always like to go
back to on this podcast, justthe principle of dating, right,

(07:58):
especially in modern day, dating, if you're not texting
someone back, if you're notengaging with them in
conversation, thatrelationship's just gonna fall
dead. So you have to look at itthe same way when it comes to
your audience or your potentialcustomers, if you're not
interacting with your audience, why should they interact with
you, and ultimately, why shouldthey purchase from you? Right?

(08:18):
So some simple things you reallycan do is just blocking out 15
minutes a day to engage withyour followers and your ideal
clients. I mean, I'm just gonnakeep it real, guys. This can be
when you're on the toilet orwhen you are sitting around the
TV at night. Please don't dothis when you're trying to have
a conversation with your husbandor wife or your kids, you know.
But block out 15 minutes. It caneven be five minutes three times

(08:42):
a day, where you areintentionally engaging with your
followers. One thing that I dothat works really well for me is
I set timers. I put a timer onmy phone to go off so that I
remember, Oh yeah, it's time togo interact with my audience.
It's just like you would do ifyou had a brick and mortar shop.
Right when people walk in yourshop, you would interact with

(09:03):
them. You would talk with them.So the same thing, you have to
look at social media, even ifyou don't sell things online say
you do have a brick and mortarstore, you have to remember that
online is any of your socialmedia is like your store. So
make sure you engage with peoplethat come into your store. You
also want to make sure that youjoin relevant conversations, say

(09:24):
in groups or comment sections. This is another little trick
that we teach at claim andsocial media, and also a way
that we do lead generation is wego find our clients, and also
our own potential clients andcustomers where they hang out on
the internet. And so a lot oftimes this looks like Facebook
groups or comment sections ofpotential partners or other

(09:46):
brands that are like ours. Goingto find them is another way to
nurture those relationships andcall people back to you.
Ultimately, at the end of theday, you just want to remember
as much as it is tempting toallow.
About AI to do so much of thisfor you, you got to remember
that people want humanconnection. I think where in the

(10:09):
past, like a couple years ago, people didn't like very
fabricated posts, like poststhat just looked too perfect.
They had too much say Photoshopand things because it felt fake.
I feel that AI bots respondingand typing for you has become
that new version. So to say it'snot that they can't be efficient
and helpful. I mean, even withour multiple brands that my

(10:31):
husband and I own, we do use AIhere and there, but overall, we
like to look at it as more ofthe exception to the rule,
right? So not the norm. The normis that we want to keep social
media social, right, keep itreal, keep it and give it that
human touch. So make sure thatwhen you are engaging with
people online, that you don'tleave it all to AI, and that

(10:54):
when you are actuallyinteracting, act like a real
person, not a billboard. Makesure that another way that you
can fix why engagement isdropping and how to turn it on
its head and turn it around, isthat you want to make sure that
your content is continuallyfresh and new. Your engagement
could be dropping if you've kindof fallen into a repetitive

(11:17):
nature or kind of stale like sayyou're not a Canva novice, and
you start using the sametemplates, and every week, you
kind of have the same type ofpost. If your posts look and
sound the same every week, honestly, people are just going
to tune you out. And that's theunfortunate name of the game.
Engagement drops when peopleexpect your content and they

(11:37):
don't fuel a reason to interact. So couple ways you can fix that
is experiment. Experiment with afew new post formats. So say
you're always doing carousels, right? That's that picture after
picture after picture kind oftelling a story in several
pictures. Try reels. I mean, video is king. Videos are the
ones that are converting themost. Now I understand that

(11:59):
reels are sometimes hard to keepup with because they are video
content. And it could be easierjust to stick with Canva or
stick with creating your ownstatic posts, but I cannot
encourage you enough to evenjust throw in one different
thing. It can be also somethinglike polls or behind the scenes
content using storytelling isreally, really powerful, like
sharing your personalexperience, even sharing with

(12:21):
people your customer wins, orHonestly, even their struggles
or your struggles, like peoplewant to relate to you. Where
have you come from? How doesyour services, your offers, your
products? How would it help themget out of that same struggle?
And besides switching up thepost formats, you also want to
make sure that you have a mix ofcontent. So there are three E's

(12:43):
that I live by when it comes tomy own social media content, but
also ones that we put intopractice for our clients, and
that is educational, entertaining and engaging. Okay,
so even if you made yourself anew content plan or a promise
that you're going to do threeposts a week, make one of them

(13:04):
educational. Share somethingspecific from your industry.
Help give people value. Two.Make something entertaining,
something that's going to makethem laugh. Add some humor, and
then engaging, right? Engagingis more. Making it about your
audience. Ask them for opinionsor their experiences. Now,
something else that,unfortunately, I see as we're

(13:25):
about to wrap up this episodethat typically is starting to
tank engagement is that peopleare relying too much on sales
posts. I get it, you're abusiness, right? You are not a
business. I remember a businesscoach or mentor telling me this
one time, very bluntly, saying,Are you making money? If you're
not, you're not a business. It'sjust a passion project. So I get

(13:48):
it, it hit me square between theeyes. So to say is maybe it just
did you, or when you feel thatpressure, like I've got to make
money, I've got to make money. And I understand that. But if
every one of your posts is buythis, sign up for that people
are just gonna feel sold to andthey're gonna start ignoring
your content again. Social mediashould feel like a two way

(14:08):
conversation, not a one sidedsales pitch, right? It's like
you don't wanna sound or comeoff as that dirty car salesman.
So one way that you can fix itis alongside your making sure
your content is educational, entertaining and engaging.
Follow the 8020 rule, 80% value,20% promotion. And in case you

(14:31):
have this fear, I'm going to nipit in the butt right away. Don't
ever feel like you're givingaway too much. 80% value feels
like a lot, but remember, peopleare going to come to you because
they trust you and becauseyou've given so much value,
rather than the opposite. Youdon't want 80% promotion and 20%

(14:53):
value. So another way that youcan kind of twist this in your
favor is even in the 20.
Promotion posts. Make sure thatthey are still engaging. Don't
just make it about the sale.Tell a story, share a
transformation, or use a casestudy to give value to what you
are promoting. Remember, insteadof hard selling, build

(15:16):
relationships. Anyone that worksin sales and are really good in
sales, they will tell you thattoo and remind you that people
buy from those that they trust. If your engagement has been
dropping and you don't know why, well, how about letting my team
and I take a look. We have a $97social media audit that will
analyze your social mediaaccounts and show you exactly

(15:40):
what's working and what's not,and how to boost your engagement

when your audience is active, engage consistently mix up your
content and focus onrelationships over sales. As you

challenge and actionable tip.And here it is, spend 10 extra
