This chapter revisits the tragic case of Winifred Locke, an 80-year-old woman who was brutally murdered in October 1983. Winifred, a widow living with Parkinson's Disease, resided in sheltered accommodation in North Petherton. On the day of the crime, her daughter-in-law, Eva, visited her as usual, unaware it would be their final meeting. The next morning, a staff member at the Baymead Meadow assisted living facility discovered Winifred's body after failing to reach her through the intercom. Winifred had been asphyxiated and sexually assaulted, shocking the close-knit community.
A large-scale investigation led by Detective Superintendent Lew Clark saw more than 1,700 local men interviewed, but the killer was never found. The crime remains unsolved, leaving the community haunted and her family without closure. The motive behind this heinous act against an elderly woman remains a mystery, raising questions about whether it was a crime of opportunity or something more sinister. Despite the passage of time, the pain of Winifred's loss endures, and the quest for justice continues, with the hope that someone might still hold the key to solving this decades-old mystery.
