(00:00):
Welcome to Super Simple Security Principles.

(00:03):
I'm Nick Jackson, and I wanna love computers.
They don't love me back.
I'm learning how to stay safe online
from my good buddy and master guardian, Makani Mason.
Woo!
He wrote his first computer program at the age of six,

(00:26):
sealing his fate as a computer geek, that's it.
He knows his stuff, folks.
Now he spends his time teaching people like me and you
how to stay ahead of the digital threats we face
and those bad guys.
He keeps it simple, and we love it.

(00:48):
Learn along with me each week.
I'll ask the questions,
and make sure he keeps it super relevant
and super simple for us.
If I can do it, you can do it too.
This is episode 73.
Trustpilot saves me from a scam.
All right, before we dive in,

(01:09):
huge shout out to our friends at Trustpilot.
We appreciate what you're doing.
Thank you so much.
We're not even gonna introduce any stories.
Remember, they're helping us stay safe
while we're shopping online.
That's what we're talking about.
So that's where we're geared around is shopping online.

(01:33):
Master Guardian, where do we start, man?
I just wanna dive in.
Are you telling me there's a tool
that might help keep me safe?
Yeah, well, let me introduce it this way.
Cause I do have a story, so.
Okay.
Because so a few weeks ago,

(01:53):
I actually really good timing was very grateful for it
because I stumbled on a shopping scam online.
And really?
Yeah, and one that was extremely interesting
and tempting to me personally, right?
Wow, they almost got you.
Oh, I wouldn't say that.
Not even close.

(02:14):
Okay, dang it.
But what they were selling is very interesting to me.
Okay.
That's what I mean by that.
Okay, okay.
It had your interest peaked
because of what they were selling.
Okay.
Yeah, exactly.
Okay.
So, but part of the way I quickly identified it

(02:34):
was connected with Trustpilot.
And so I just thought we'd kind of walk through the story
and how I identified it as a scam.
It'd be kind of a good, you know, sales pitch,
so to speak, an introduction to Trustpilot.
Sounds great.
Let's have it.

(02:54):
So, but before we get in this story,
just a couple introductory things.
So the Trustpilot is a website that does reviews.
I've used regularly for, I don't know how many years.
They've been around since 2007.
I didn't find them that early.
I can't remember how long,
but I use regularly and have had lots of good experiences with.

(03:18):
And the way they're oriented,
like some reviews are like products or whatever.
These are tied to specific websites, right?
So they're a perfect fit for what we're trying to do here
is analyze a brand new shopping website
because you can look up by the website there.
Right.
Okay.

(03:38):
Okay.
Okay.
And they have reviews by website.
They're just a third-party neutral reviews provider.
Okay.
Okay.
So, but, so here's the other,
like here's kind of the caveat, right?
Reviews are tricky.
And some bad reviews,
like if you go to a website and, you know,

(04:00):
there's some bad reviews, even on Trustpilot,
it doesn't necessarily mean that, you know,
you should run for the hills.
It's dangerous, right?
Right.
It's more nuanced than that.
And neither do, you know,
a ton of good reviews guarantee it's, you know,
it's perfectly safe.
Right.
Right.
Reviews in general just are more nuanced on that anywhere,

(04:21):
but including Trustpilot.
And, you know,
we're going to be coming back to reviews a lot in this,
you know, shopping series.
Okay.
And try to navigate through a bunch of different examples.
Perfect.
But Trustpilot is where we're going to start because it's kind of,
I don't know.

(04:42):
I'd probably,
I'd say it's my most trusted.
It's definitely my most trusted general purpose source of reviews.
Wow.
Does that make sense?
Yeah,
that makes sense.
That's a good claim.
Yeah.
It's got,
you know,
the broadest scope.
Like I have for specific things,
there's other websites you can go to for,

(05:03):
you know,
TVs or different things.
Right.
But for websites and just it's breadth of coverage,
it works really well.
So.
Perfect.
Perfect.
Okay.
So here's the story.
I was watching a YouTube video on my phone in my house.

(05:23):
I was doing some exercising and there was a video that I was referencing
about,
you know,
how to do an exercise.
Right.
Yeah.
And so an ad came up in the YouTube video and it was for,
you know,
a fitness product.
And I'm like,
Oh man,
that sounds awesome.
Right.
Yeah.
And it's called the body pod.
And I took a snapshot.

(05:45):
I'm just going to read this.
This is,
you know,
like two sentence elevator pitch says,
understanding your health and fitness at this level has been impossible
until now.
The body pod uses eight frequency sensors to deliver precise weight,
full body composition,
and heart health to advance your weight and health management journey.
The advanced sensors embedded in the handle,
are able to scan your torso arms and legs,

(06:08):
and even heart at an accuracy of 98%.
Wow.
So,
right.
It's like a scale you stand on,
right?
Like normal.
You just weigh yourself,
except they've got the kind of this cord that comes up and you've got a
strap that you hold,
you know,
that's supposed to help with the body composition and,
and all this.
Right.

(06:28):
So that,
and that was kind of the pitch in,
in the,
in the ad.
I'm like,
that sounds awesome.
So I clicked the ad,
you know,
take a look.
And,
you know,
the price wasn't cheap,
but it wasn't insane.
229 bucks.
Okay.
So I decided to investigate a little bit further.
Now,

(06:49):
what we're going to do now,
I tested this out a bit beforehand,
but we've never done this on the,
on the podcast for before.
So as I'm going to screen share,
I'm actually going to walk through the website just a little bit.
Now I know a lot of,
obviously we have a lot of audio listeners,
so I'll describe a little bit what we're seeing,
but you can always,
you know,
go check out the video on YouTube there as well.

(07:11):
Yeah.
Okay.
So first I'm going to open up this page to the first page that I was scrolling through.
By the way,
this is my first time seeing it.
Yeah.
Okay.
So you can see we're on the,
the name is Hume health,
Hume health.com.
And there's a picture of the,

(07:31):
you know,
the scales with the handle,
like I talked about.
Yeah.
On the top,
it shows 48,252 reviews,
4.8 out of 5.0.
Okay.
Yeah.
Everything's looking good so far.
So I scroll down,
you know,
I'm,
I'm looking through scrolling down here.
Okay.
And so then this is what catches my eye.
See these green,

(07:53):
there's these green boxes with stars in them that are kind of a distinctive star.
Those are very clearly the trust pilot stars.
And you can see underneath it.
It says rated 4.5 out of five based on 3,346 reviews showing our favorite views from trust pilot.
I'm like,

(08:13):
dude,
if they got the four,
if they got that kind of rating on trust pilot,
man,
we're golden.
So,
right.
You know,
the reviews there look like a link right here in the middle.
There's a link in theory.
So I go and I click,
I try to click on it.
Oh,
no clicky.
Right.
That's a bad sign.

(08:33):
Okay.
Thumbs off.
Yeah.
So we're going to go to trust pilot and we're going to search for Hume health here.
And we come to Hume health and lo and behold.
Oh,
they got terrible reviews.

(08:55):
Yeah.
They've got 35 reviews and 2.6 stars.
Holy cow.
Yeah.
Yeah.
So,
and actually it's funny now because one of the things that I noted at the time,
and this has changed.
If you see up at the top here,
just above the Hume health,
it says claimed profile.

(09:19):
So what that,
well,
what that means is the business responsible for this website came to trust pilot and
said,
yep,
we own this website,
you know,
and so that way they can respond to negative reviews and things like that.
Okay.
Right.
But at the time I did it,
it was an unclaimed profile still.
So this has changed since just a few weeks ago.

(09:42):
So that was a huge red flag to me.
Right.
Because I mean,
they have listed on their website that,
you know,
there's the five thousand.
I mean,
obviously the,
the review claim was the more important thing,
but I just thought it was interesting that they didn't even have it claimed.
Right.
So anyway,
and you know,
I mean,
I'm like with that fewer reviews,

(10:02):
that bad reviews,
with it lying compared to what they had on their website.
I mean,
you almost don't really need to look any further,
right?
To be like,
let's,
let's walk away from this.
But I want to show you a couple of things anyway,
just because they're useful and interesting for trust pilot in general.
Okay.
Even though we already have enough damning evidence here,

(10:25):
frankly,
you know,
right.
So two things I want to show over on the right here,
there's a,
how this company uses trust pilot.
So if we click on that,
now this doesn't have a terrible amount of interesting here,
it's mostly empty because they haven't really done a lot.
But for example,

(10:46):
like the review sources here,
they actually have one verified review.
That's interesting.
because that's changed too.
But you could see the star distribution and then up here with the company details,
they haven't,
you know,

(11:06):
they haven't had any customers.
Yeah.
Oh yeah.
Anyway,
this is a good place.
Like I said,
this is not very interesting to look at.
So we'll have to come back on this in a future one.
But because I haven't replied to any negative views anyway,
like I said,
it's empty,
but this page,
I just wanted to point out this page basically is,

(11:27):
is a useful page in general.
Okay.
Especially with one that actually has some,
like a,
a little more legitimate company.
Yeah.
So,
but the other thing I wanted to show here and let's see.
Okay.
So this is another thing that's changed.
When I looked at this before,

(11:47):
we're at this section.
So I scrolled down on the,
the main Hume health page and there's a section that says people also looked at
and what it showed here.
And actually what we'll do is we'll go back to the search.
Cause I'm pretty sure it showed up here.
So if we search in Hume health here,
there was also,
you notice right here,
a my Hume health.com.

(12:10):
And so if we think,
yeah.
So if,
and if you go to my Hume health.com,
now it will just redirect you to Hume health.com.
So this one's an older previous one.
And you can see that it's been around long enough.
Now look at this.
They've got this big red warning thing.

(12:30):
because if you hover over,
it says this company is breaching our terms of use by displaying trust pilot
content in a way that could be misleading.
Oh,
geez.
Yeah.
Which I would obviously we saw,
right.
They were claiming to have a 4.5 out of five.
And you know,
so anyway,

(12:51):
this is,
this is confirmation that just another,
just more confirmation.
Right.
So,
yeah.
Let's see.
Now,
was there anything else I wanted to show you on there?
Yeah.

(13:13):
Yeah.
So I didn't really look too closely.
Like,
I mean,
I did kind of browse some of these reviews,
but it was mostly pretty damning anyway.
And you know,
the reviews kind of fit with it being pretty scammy.
Okay.
And so,
you know,
here's kind of my,

(13:33):
my conclusion.
So I think I'm done sharing this.
But,
you know,
obviously I don't want to shop here.
Right.
Right.
But I mean,

(13:54):
just get back to my notes here.
Yeah.
I wouldn't want to shop there.
Anything that has like 2.6 doesn't sound very appealing.
Well,
yeah.
I mean,
and you know,
and they could be,
you know,
yeah.
I mean,
with that number of reviews,
right.
Even if that,
like,
even if we're honest and true and they just didn't show anything on their own

(14:15):
web website about trust pilot,
let alone lie about it.
Right.
Then that would certainly be hard to,
to swallow.
Right.
Cause that's,
that's a good case to think about.
Right.
Like what if they weren't lying about it?
What if they just didn't say anything about it because they had bad reviews
there.
Right.
Right.
And I don't know,

(14:35):
for me,
at least I definitely err on the side of safety.
I mean,
you know,
there are,
there is a tendency for people to,
you know,
they have a problem.
At least the general assertion is that more people will do bad reviews than
good.
Right.
True.
Although I personally don't follow that trend.
I,
I've never,

(14:56):
I mean,
I don't know.
I may have left a bad review sometime,
but I usually don't take time to leave bad reviews because I got to think
really hard about exactly what I want to say.
Yeah.
You know,
I don't make sense.
I don't refer to,
you know,
people to them or anything.
And I wore a mock we're talking about,
but I don't generally leave the bad reviews where I was,
I've left quite a few good reviews in different places.

(15:18):
Yeah.
So,
you know,
but I don't know statistically how that is,
but in any case,
you know,
that's something to consider,
but when it's overwhelming,
yeah,
it's,
I certainly,
I certainly kind of treat it unless there's proof that,
you know,
there's something that makes me think that they're good,
despite the bad reviews,
then I'm going to trust that the bad reviews are telling me that it's not

(15:44):
safe.
If that makes sense.
That makes sense.
Yep.
So,
um,
uh,
so I guess,
it basically the,
the kind of,
I mean,
it hasn't been too long,
but the,
this explain,
this is one example anyway,
why trust pilot is item number two on my safe website checklist,

(16:07):
because even though this case was like super quick and easy,
it's,
I've found it useful to be off to be useful very often.
If that makes sense.
Yeah.
That makes total sense.
And the other thing I'll say though,
is my list is evolving.

(16:28):
You know,
trust pilot didn't used to be on the list and it may not be in the future,
or it might be lower on the list because one of the things that happens
and I'm,
you know,
is it's,
I mean,
trust pilot has grown a lot.
If you look,
they published their numbers of how many reviews they've gotten.
It's growing in popularity,
getting more written,
more recognition.
And the fact that it's on my podcast,

(16:48):
you know,
and evidence of that.
And just,
anyway,
it's,
it's going to become more and more of a target for the bad guys to try to
exploit that system.
So,
you know,
I mean,
they,
they have numbers on there of how many bad reviews they have to remove all
the time because people are trying to game the system,

(17:09):
you know?
Yeah.
And so it remains to be seen if trust pilot is,
you know,
up to the challenge.
Can they keep their data from getting ruined?
Right.
Right.
You know?
So,
so,
yeah.
So if you've reached the end of your bed,
I have a question for you.

(17:29):
Yeah,
please.
Do you mind if we ad lib a little bit more?
No,
cause it was short out,
you know,
the walking through honestly took me a lot less time.
Like I was thinking showing all that stuff and maybe it's because I got
too distracted with visual and I didn't describe it as well as I could
have for our audio.
So I apologize.
That's the case.
But yeah,
I'm curious.

(17:50):
We're completely ad living.
So anybody that ever sees this,
this is completely fly of the night.
I fell victim to what I think was a scam.
I still have not,
been delivered my product.
Yeah.
The monitor page for it.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The monitor one.

(18:10):
Yeah.
We,
and you want to go to trust pilot and see what it says.
We did this together.
We found trust pilot before.
Right.
Yeah.
They're on the show.
Yeah.
I can't remember what it is though.
Now.
I don't know what it is now either.
I know.
I don't remember.
I don't remember.
I don't remember.
It's now redirected to something new.

(18:33):
Yeah.
Yeah.
I,
I can't remember what slide enjoy.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.

(18:57):
yeah i don't know can you find them
maybe one sec yeah
uh yep there it is yes yeah yeah so i can present this real quick

(19:18):
okay present that i'm gonna plug my computer in so it doesn't die on us real quick
yeah yeah yeah so this is definitely a good example of one that uh if you had known about
that's pretty damning yeah

(19:41):
yeah yeah i fell victim to that that that was me yeah that was the oh yeah it's oh it's totally
right there got totally other just weird crap now not even the same thing not even the same thing
yeah right because it was the world's first accessory tripling accessory tripling your laptop screen

(20:08):
yep yep you know that would have been it you know
yeah and i think actually they had some multiple versions of it as well
here that what other ones yeah i think this might have been one of them as well yeah it's belgium

(20:29):
as well i think this is another one because they had when we were researching before i remember they
and this apparently is a trend with scams so this is something to be aware of with shopping
is just like they had the hume health.com and my hume health.com you know obviously they were a
little more creative they had joy and slide and then you know the portable monitor
but yeah it's interesting they've got to come up in these different forms recycle it

(20:55):
yeah so yeah so use trust pilot yeah it's it's getting good one um yeah actually i'm you ready
for a call to action then or you got i am i'm ready for our call to action let's do it yeah so basically

(21:16):
i just want people to you know practice using it go to trustpilot.com look up a website or here's another
thing that i haven't done a lot of but the few times when i you know because i only recently
discovered it relatively anyway um but you can go browse by category like say you need you know car
insurance or clothing and you want to see you can go browse by category and see top rated sites

(21:38):
you know in category by category and i found i found some good things just doing that
so um yeah just go practice a little bit on trust pilot so that you know when it comes up like when
you need it when you might need it in in the future you'll brain and remember hey yeah i can go check
trustpilot.com because it's that's an easy call to action too yeah would have saved me quite a bit of

(22:05):
money yeah yep so awesome should we tease them about uh next week's episode absolutely so following
what we're doing of course we're gonna go to item number three on the checklist and

(22:27):
can you get an answer that's the question we're leaving them with i thought that was well that's
the question we'll be yeah like you'll be asking that question to uh yeah anyway well and you get an
answer yeah and actually you know and that'll probably be the last one we'll do for a while on

(22:51):
the checklist we'll we're going to move into some other pieces of um the shopping security stack
because those three get you quite a ways in my experience um there may be some others that we
get but that's kind of i'm thinking probably the 80 20 kind of thing like just answering those three
things it's a long way um so excellent i love it i love it that was a good episode man yeah you were

(23:21):
smart enough to trust trust pilot i was dumb enough to not go to trust pilot well you didn't know about
it yet right that's true so all right man that was a good episode
are you ready to take action and wondering where to start get my bulletproof my identity starter kit

(23:44):
for free the seven most vital layers of protection everyone needs i'll send you one step at a time
and help you if you get stuck just go to bulletproofmyid.com and enter your name and email and i will
