Welcome to the Bravery BehindThe Brand podcast, the podcast
that dives deep into the heartof the stories behind the
brands we encounter on socialmedia every day. On the
surface they make it look soeasy but I guarantee there is
blood, sweat and tears behindall the reels, posts and
beautifully presentedproducts. I'm your host Amanda
Jane, a personal branding andmedia skills coach originally
(00:25):
from the north of Ireland andnow calling beautiful
Cheshire, England my home. Iwork with business owners,
building their confidence andcrafting compelling brand
stories so they feelcomfortable stepping into the
spotlight and becoming thego-to guest that everyone
wants, speaking with authorityand selling with authenticity.
I experience first-hand thecourage that's required to
move beyond our comfort zoneand these are the
inspirational stories I wantto share. I'll also be doing
(00:48):
some solo episodes and sharinguseful tips that will
hopefully help you to getmotivated with your own
personal branding. Becauseit's more than just a
beautiful website and glossyphotos for Instagram, You do
actually have to talk topeople. So let's get started.
(01:09):
Hello, everyone, and welcometo the Bravery Behind The
Brand podcast. And today Ihave with me my lovely friend,
Angela Santiago. Hello,Angela. How's it going?
Wonderful. Thank you forjoining me. Thank you for
having me. I'm so lookingforward to this podcast today.
Me too. And I'm thrilled thatyou've finally joined me on my
(01:31):
podcast. So before we getstuck in, I'm going to ask you
my famous three questionsbefore we get stuck into your
business. So do you have amotivational song? And I will
be adding it to the Spotifyplaylist that we have that
accompanies this podcast. Oh,wow. Okay. So, you know, I
(01:52):
have so many of them. Isometimes don't know where to
go to answer that question. But two things, two of them
actually come to my mind. Isthat okay? Of course. So the
first one is Dancing in theMoonlight. That is a really
peppy, snappy song. And thatjust lifts my spirit,
especially when I have a daythat is a little bit like,
(02:13):
yeah, you know, a little bitiffy. And that just kind of
really gets The beat going andit just makes me happy. And
the other one is called I WillSurvive by Gloria Gaynor. And
now I'm kind of telling alittle bit on my age because
both songs were, I guess, written way back in the 70s
(02:33):
sometimes. To me, this is areally, really empowering song
for women of all ages, really,if you think about it. And
it's almost like it gives uspermission to believe That we
can, we are so much strongerthan sometimes we often
believe that we are, but italso helps to set boundaries.
(02:58):
It gives us this permission toset boundaries. That song, I
mean, I remember every timewhen they came on, I was
singing that song on top of mylungs. No, I can't imagine
there's not a woman on theplanet who hasn't actually
stood to attention and sangthat song and meant every
single word. I knew everyword. Yes, I did. That is a
(03:21):
great choice. I don't thinkthey're currently on the
playlist, but they'redefinitely going on. No
brilliant choices. I lovethose, Angela. And do you have
a motivational quote? Well, Iactually do. And I don't know
if anybody has ever come upwith it, but I came up with
it. Probably 16, 17 years ago.And that was, I keep moving
(03:42):
forward with ease. That wassomething that I shared way
back when with a group ofpeople that I used to meet on
a regular basis and I taughtthem energy work and
aromatherapy. And that wasjust something that has always
kind of stood out to me. Andit kind of reminds us to where
(04:05):
I wanna be. Not where I'm atat this moment, just to making
progress and that progressdoesn't have to be hard. It
can be easy and effortless. Ilike that. I mean, yeah, I
like that. That is very, veryempowering. And it just, yeah,
it makes you not feel stuck.Yes, it's you know sometimes
(04:30):
when we feel we're gettinginto this feeling and into
this like you know what we'restarting to kind of feel like
we're getting tangled up inwhatever situation that we're
in then just saying this italmost starts to shift your
mind into a more positive wayinstead of going down the
spiral at least that I had theexperience while doing this
(04:55):
and I recite my own quotes.Yes, I do. And you gave me one
that I still have as well. Sothank you. Yeah, I like that.
I move forward with these. Anddo you read? I'm being nosy
now. I love to read. Oh mygosh, I'm a bookworm. I read
all the time. Are you readinganything at the moment that's
(05:16):
worth sharing? At this moment, not, but I have a favorite,
favorite book. And I thinkthis is the all time favorite.
Although I like to readpsychology books, I like to
read books on aromatherapy,self-help books, a lot of
things. This particular bookis written by Jeanette Walls.
(05:37):
No, it's Jeanette, yes,Jeanette Walls. And the book,
it is a memoir and the book iscalled The Glass House. No,
again, wrong. The GlassCastle. I apologize. Jeanette
Walls, The Glass Castle. Thisis an attention grabbing book,
(05:57):
to say the least. It basicallygives you insight on the
resilience that we actuallyhave on the inside and how to
overcome hardship. It is anamazing book and it's
basically I'm going to justshare a teeny weeny tiny
snippet. It's Jeanette shetalks about when she was small
(06:21):
and had two older siblings andhow she grew up in this
tumultuous crazy It was atotally house of dysfunction
and she survived all of this. And at the very end, there is
a twist to the story. It isvery unexpected. So I'm going
to leave you all in suspensewith that. But it basically
(06:45):
gives us a perspective of whatis important to us and how we
want to live our lives andthat we don't have to be in
despair. But we can be invictory, we don't have to be
in misery but live in joy orinstead of being in defeat we
can just live in harmony andhave this inner peace. So this
(07:07):
is what this book is allabout. It is mind-blowingly
fabulous. I love the sound ofit and it's going on my list
and I love it when peopleremind you that you know life
is hard and it doesn't alwaysgo the way we want it but We
always have to remember wehave a choice on how we deal
with it. You can choose towallow and get sucked into the
(07:29):
negativity or you can chooseto learn from it and move on
and I love that reminderbecause it's very easy to get
stuck and drawn intonegativity but I like the
sound of that book and that isgoing on on my list. Now do
you read physical books or doyou read a kindle or do you
listen to audiobooks or is ita mixture? I love me a real
(07:50):
book where I can underline, highlight, make notes on it.
This is just what I do and Ilove it. And even if I don't
go back to this book rightaway, but maybe even in a year
or two years later, if Ireread it or I just open it,
there are like little snippetsthat are highlighted or little
(08:11):
notes and they give me somereminders of why I Made that
little mark on there and thoseare just really lovely
reminders of the book and thehighlights, more or less, you
know. I have three. I havephysical books and then I have
Kindle books and then I haveaudio books and it's a good
job that I don't have allphysical books because I
(08:33):
probably need a library of myown. I have a library. And my
younger daughter is stillhere. Right, let's move on to
you, to Angela and yourbusiness. So tell us a bit
about what you do. Well, Istarted out almost two decades
(08:53):
ago as a certified naturalhealth professional where I
learned about the anatomy andthe physical body and herbs
and the supplements andiridology and holistic
healings and all of thesekinds of things. But then, a
little bit later, I found outor I discovered energy healing
(09:17):
and it was so amazing becauseI immediately knew that this
was my calling, this is what Iwas supposed to do and
especially because while I wasexperiencing my own healing
journey and I went throughthis. So my business focuses
most of the time on women Theylike to release emotional
(09:42):
blocks and they like to healfrom their past, their past
wounds, past traumas oranxiety or overwhelm or
perhaps a current crisis ormaybe a current crisis is
triggering something old fromway back when they thought
(10:03):
they probably have alreadytaken care of this But maybe
not at all or maybe only justa little bit of it. And then I
want for them to get into aplace of where they find this
inner peace and self-worth andconfidence. Several years
later after that, after Idiscovered that, I actually
(10:25):
started to learn aromatherapy, which is my second
love. That's just what I loveto do and I call it emotional
aroma therapy And the reasonbeing is because everything
that I do, it centers aroundbalancing and aligning
(10:46):
misplaced emotions and energy. So well, what is a misplaced
emotion? These are basicallyemotions that are stuck
somewhere in our body that ourbody almost holds hostage.
We're hanging on to some oldstuff sometimes so tight or
(11:06):
even limited beliefs and forinstance like perfectionism,
guilt, anxiety orfear of anticipation, fear of
waiting for more bad things tohappen and so all of these
triggers they can affect thebody and the mind and the
(11:28):
spirit and that is why I offergentle I use the word gentle
because years ago when Istarted with this people
always thought when they workwith me they're going to fall
apart and they're just goingto be crying. It's not like
this. It's a very gentlemethodical process to shift
(11:52):
from what was or what is towhat can be to the
possibilities that we can haveAnd during those sessions, we
uncovered the root causes ofwhat is causing all of this to
really kind of hone in to showthe people that they can move
(12:14):
on from all of this stuff. Wedon't have to be stuck in this
fight and flight. And a lot ofpeople, they are stuck in this
sometimes for decades, andthey don't even understand
that they've been living inthis realm of Overcharged
energies and to them theythink it's normal but it's
(12:35):
normal because maybe they grewup in a really maybe abusive
home or who knows you knowdysfunctional home. To them
it's normal but it's reallynot and then that is the kind
of things that we're kind ofhoning into and although we
don't see energy, energy isjust such a gentle Yet
(12:58):
profound and amazing healingmodality. And I just can't put
any more emphasis on that thanI just did. So I hope I didn't
say too much or too little. No, you explained it so well
and having experienced one ofyour sessions, I can say that
you explained it sobeautifully. And one of the
(13:18):
things that I've only come tolearn in recent years was the
body and the subconscious doescling to these things and it
was a guest on this podcastlast year and one of my old
friends told me about the bookThe Body Keeps The Score and I
remember thinking what doesthat mean The Body Keeps The
Score and it was on my mindfor ages and I still haven't
(13:40):
read the book but it keepscoming up this theme of things
Being held and not let go andenergy and I just I find the
whole concept so sofascinating that it's it just
seems to be around my world alot and I don't believe in
coincidences so it's obviouslysomething that I need to look
(14:00):
at further but you justmentioned it about it being
held in the body and energy iseverything it's everywhere and
there's always you know I'vetalked at length before about
the things that We don't knowenough of and we're curious
and we want to learn moreabout the subconscious and the
work that you do I think isjust so unbelievably rich and
(14:21):
can do so much good and evenjust to get someone to address
possibly that there are issueswith the subconscious and that
they have control oversomething that they didn't
have control of in the past. You now can control that
energy and control what theydo with it in the present to
make a better future forthemselves. I just loved the
(14:44):
whole idea of it and that'swhy I was really interested in
your business and why I wantedyou on the podcast so my
listeners could hear fromthemselves from you what
exactly that all meant. Canyou please repeat that? That's
why I wanted you on thepodcast to hear from you, from
the horse's mouth, so tospeak. I do appreciate it and
(15:07):
I love being here. I don'tknow if you can tell, but this
is really my passion. It justnever gets old and empowering
women to me is just sobeautiful because I have been
through trauma myself morethan what I would like to
admit. And you know what, asyou can see, this is how you
(15:28):
can function. You know, evenwhen you've had a lot of
trauma happening in your life, you can be happy, you can live
an amazing life and you canhave a heart full of joy and
all of this kind of stuff. Donot have to be defined about,
you know, all of the thingsthat happened. Yes, that's
exactly what I was thinking. You don't have to be defined
(15:50):
by anything and I love that tothink that you don't have to
let whatever that was defineyou. No, that is brilliant. So
what was the biggest challengein building your business that
you started 20 years ago andhow did you overcome it?
Because I can't imagine it waseasy because the landscape
would have been very different20 years ago when we were
(16:12):
talking about what we'retalking about now. More people
are receptive now, but maybethey weren't 20 years ago.
Well, let me say this. I grewup in Germany so for whatever
reason we seemed like we wereway ahead of a lot of the
holistic healing and addingdifferent remedies and kinds
(16:33):
of things. So I think this issort of kind of already in my
DNA because I grew up likethis. Now here in the States
it was different and Iremember years ago I wanted to
Half a holistic business about35 years ago and I was a
little bit too timid to startbecause I wasn't sure if
(16:53):
people thought I was just likevery odd, very different. But
nowadays people have reallycome around and they have
opened up to so many holisticmodalities including energy
healing. But I have to saywhen I started the biggest
hurdle that I had and that Iencountered was trusting
(17:15):
myself. Wow. That was, thatwas huge because I had to
learn myself to trust myintuition, to really listen to
my heart and to tune in to, isthis, am I going the right
direction or I'm just makingthis up? And you know, when
(17:38):
you are growing up and you arenever validated as a child and
you are not encouraged, Thereare some doubts that can show
up. So at the end of the day,I said to myself, you know
what Angela, encourageyourself. I had sessions
myself, many, many, manyenergy healing sessions, but
(18:01):
then you come to a point withlike, you got to help
yourself. You got to, youknow, pick yourself up and
just say, you know what, youknow how to do this. You can
do this. It's not justeverybody else around you, but
you can do this too. So trustyourself. And it seemed like
the more I worked with people, the more I realized How deeply
(18:27):
I was able to connect withpeople. And the reason why I
found out is because, and itwas almost effortlessly to add
to, is because clients told meso many times, oh my goodness,
you can exactly put into wordsand explain What we think or
(18:50):
what I think and what is on myheart, I am just blown away
that you can do this. And so Iwant to encourage everybody
that is listening to thepodcast, trust your intuition
and go with that. That is oneof your gifts and you may have
this really awesome gift. Youjust have to tap into it.
(19:13):
That's so interesting becauseanother thing that I read
recently, a very simple line, and it said, your body has the
answer. And that stuck in myhead as well. And you just
said that, you know, your bodyhas the answer. But yeah,
trust your intuition. It'sthere to keep us safe, to warn
us, to guide us. It's likethat internal guidance system.
(19:36):
And it's never going to let usdown, is it? Our intuition,
it's there and we need to tapinto a little bit more. I have
to take that advice myself. But it's so, again, it's just
so fascinating and I'm just sohappy for you that you find
that that's what it was thatguided you on your business.
So if you could give yourselfone piece of advice when you
(19:57):
were starting out, what wouldit be? Well, I think the
biggest thing Ever, ever, andI want your audience and the
people that are listening tous really pay attention. I
want you to take this home ifyou don't take anything else
home with you. Do not ever, ever, ever compare yourself
with someone else. It's notgoing to work. You're just
(20:21):
going to add yourself up inthis little ball of emotional,
you're just going to beemotionally crippled because
you want to be just like...Now, you want to be like
somebody? No. However, we canlook up to other people and we
can admire them to a point andwe can just, you know, use
them as role models and all ofthis. But wanting to be just
(20:43):
like that person, no, we allhave gifts. We all have
certain things that we wereblessed with from the day we
were born. And I like to seethat Everybody is using their
gifts because people so oftenget stuck again in the the bad
(21:04):
things that happen to them andthe old things and then what
they are happening they're sostuck on what has happened
instead of what's going onright now that they are
missing their gifts they'remissing to share this mandate
or this beautiful again thisgift that they have And when
(21:28):
they get older, I don't wantanybody to regret life because
they were stuck on their past. So, you know, don't compare
yourself to others. Do you anddo it with gusto. That is such
good advice. And in the age ofsocial media and as the mother
(21:49):
of two young daughters, I wasalways careful to get that
message across because it'snot real. You only see what
they want you to see and Ithink it's all too easy to
compare yourself with what yousee on social media. So I've
always had that eye, but it'sa dangerous path when you
fall, when you start goingdown that road and it leads to
(22:12):
nothing. So that comparison isjust, if you can embrace that
message, I think you'll live amuch, much happier life
because it is just a completewaste of time. So speaking of
social media, how comfortableare you with your audience and
how comfortable are youshowing up with social media?
Now, I can't imagine youdancing on social media, but I
(22:34):
have seen you doing your livesand they were brilliant. And
how comfortable were you doingthat? Totally comfortable. I
just, I do not mind being oncamera or speaking to people.
I mean, I have been doing thisFor a couple of decades I had
my own workshop and it's stilldue to a point. It has slowed
(22:55):
down since COVID so I do morestuff online but I have been
invited to different podcasts.I have been invited to
Facebook lives where peoplehad their VIP groups and
sometimes people have hundredsand hundreds of attendees. And
(23:16):
what I have noticed is that Ifind it really easy and
effortless to connect withthese people because first of
all, they can see me and I cansee them. And I prefer to do
this than maybe writingemails, although that is okay.
(23:37):
But being on social media, people can get a feel of who
Angela really is. You know, they can hear my words, they
can hear the tone of my voice, they can connect with my
energy, my gestures, so theycan just really take in who I
really am. And to me, thatis almost priceless. And I
(24:03):
notice this every time when wedo have a life, again, people
are like, I want to get a holdof you or how can we find you
and this and that and so it isbecause they can see me and
it's almost like to them itresonates with the topic
perhaps that I share and youknow but you also have to be
(24:27):
comfortable with the personthat you are working with so
it has it's multifaceted youknow but no I'm good. And I
just started doing lives onInstagram and yes I love it.
And you talked about energyand I think you know that that
is so brilliant because we'vegot the technology now to
connect with our audienceimmediately and they're there
(24:49):
and you know you're it's ait's a whole energetic thing
they can see your energy theycan feel your energy and it's
just an amazing thing to beable to do. I'm happier if I'm
talking to someone or I'minteracting and I know I'm
doing something I stillstruggle, you know, if I'm
doing it by myself, if I'mrecording myself, I love this,
(25:10):
you know, when I'm talking andhaving a conversation because
I'm totally in the moment. That's when I'm doing my best
work. But sitting down, recording myself, talking
about something, that takes alot of work for me. But I just
love being with people andtalking with people. That's
probably where I'm at my mostcomfortable. But yeah, you're
an absolute natural duringyour lives. And, you know,
(25:30):
you're just one of thesepersonalities that you just
get drawn in. Angela, I'mhypnotized. You're so sweet.
Oh, yeah, you are natural, butto have this technology at our
fingertips and, you know, it'syour personal brand, you're
there. It's authentic. It's,you know, this is me right now
(25:54):
in this moment live this, youknow, what you get is what you
see. I just love it. And lovethe fact that it you know, we
don't have makeup artistsbehind us or people do our
hair or all natural, great, absolutely natural. And I just
think that, you know, to beliving in this era with that
ability is utterly fantasticbecause there's nothing false
(26:17):
about it. There's no scripthere. This is just two people
having a chat and to be ableto do that and show up and
have that authenticity all thetime because you can't fake
this stuff. You can't keepthis. You can't sustain this
level of fakeness. And that'swhat I love that we have this
ability as business owners toshow up as ourselves every
single day. And it's justthis. So to be comfortable in
(26:42):
that environment, I think is atrue gift to be able to get up
and do it. So well done on youfor doing your lives. You
absolutely rocked it. Welldone. And you know what, also
with this AI stuff and all ofthese things right now, you
know, anybody nowadays, theycan write a script and they
can write this, but it'sdifferent when you When you
(27:03):
connect with people, whetherit is in a group or whether
it's one-on-one, people arestarving to have connections
with each other. That is whatI'm finding. And
conversations, you stripeverything back, strip
marketing, branding, everything, take it all away.
(27:24):
And I know this from mycareer. All people want to do
is have a conversation.Whatever it is, and if you
think about when you phone, you've got a complaint about
your phone line, yourinternet, all you want to do
is have a conversation. Andit's the same with us. People
love to connect, they love tochat. And I always say, no
(27:46):
matter what it is, no matterwhat the problem is, the
minute you look into thewhites of someone's eyes, The
situation changes and I'm likethe ultimate diplomat. But
that is the absolute basics ofhuman communication, isn't it?
Having a conversation andpeople love to chat in
England, Ireland, Scotland,Wales, we chat over a cup of
(28:06):
tea and biscuits. That's justwhat we do. I love it. Well,
you know, I grew up insouthern Germany and yes,
that's what we do, especiallySaturdays and Sundays in the
afternoon. We have coffee ortea and cake or Something
sweet that is home baked. I'mjust saying you know we don't
go and yeah and I still kindof I'm keeping this up and I
(28:28):
still I still do some bakingand I do all of my cooking
from scratch most of the timeso yes. That's how you show
love isn't it by baking thesethings and feeding the people
that you love because you'vemade you know it's food but
it's all communication it'sall right back to basics
taking away all the tacky Allof this, and I just love that.
People, I just would hate tolose that art, you know, lose
(28:50):
it in AI, but all I know isthat people love To talk and
chat and we just have to keepthat up, keep that natural
conversation flowing and youknow, long may it continue. I
just love a good natter. Asyou can tell, that's why I
have a podcast. I got my tearight here. I have my coffee.
(29:11):
So what's next for your brandthen, Angela? Have you got
anything in the pipeline orare you going to carry on with
the magic that you have? Well,I do want to carry on with
what I do and you know, Talkabout my sessions that I do
with my clients and which Iabsolutely love and it helps
them and I have a lot ofbeautiful testimonials and
(29:33):
such gracious and amazingclients. I just love them.
However, I am in the middle ofplanning group healing
sessions and I thought thiswould be wonderful to add to
my portfolio because sometimespeople, you know, they want to
have maybe a session inbetween the one-on-one
sessions. Maybe they had arough week. or even people
(29:56):
that are brand new to energyhealing that would give them
the opportunity kind of to seehow I work and how to go about
energy healing and how torelease this in a very again
gentle way and so you know andthen also I thought about this
(30:18):
Maybe having different topicsor different scenes every
single time when there is ahealing session. So I can
basically use this for thewhole entire group. For
instance, if somebodystruggles with perfectionism
that is going to be the themeand then we're going to work
on perfectionism or feelingguilty. A lot of people that I
(30:41):
work with They tell me aboutthe Catholic guilt. Oh, it's
very real. People tell meabout this all the time. I'm
not Catholic, so I don't know.But if I would get a quarter
every single time somebody hastold me this, and I have done
thousands and thousands ofsessions, right? I would be
(31:04):
rich right now. And I waslike, okay, we need to have a
session. In fact, myInstagram, I actually talked
about guilt. There are somelittle videos, some reels on
there that people can checkout. So yes, I figured that
maybe doing working onboundaries or fear of
anticipation and those kind ofthings. But then I also want
(31:25):
to expand the self-help,how shall I say, offers that I
have in my shop on my website. So right now I have About 15
different sets of beautiful, Icall them declarations. A lot
of people say affirmations. Soit really doesn't matter. But
(31:48):
they are very specific. They're geared around a
specific topic. And so I wantto add more to it. I also want
to add more. I'm in the middleof writing a book on chakras
and the aroma therapy thatgoes with it, that matches.
All of our chakras can bealigned in the essential oils
(32:11):
that they can diffuse and I'mgiving people all of their
recipes and all of this kindof stuff. All of this is going
to be in the book. It's almostfinished. And then I also have
aI started writing one journal
on self-worth and I want towrite more of that and then do
(32:34):
some more workshops. So in anutshell, I want to just add
more of one thing and adding acouple of new things. Oh, that
just sounds incredible. I loveit. And where can we find more
about you online? What's yourwebsite? So my website is
angelasantiago.com. And sopeople can go on there, they
(32:58):
can check out what I have tooffer, if they would like to
work with me, but I have alittle gift. Anybody that is
interested, they can go on mywebsite on the first page and
scroll all the way to the veryend and I have, I call it a
SOS self-help script. So whenyou have a day where you don't
(33:21):
feel so good and you feel likeyou're going like down the
spiral, you can access that, you can print it, you can put
it in your purse, you can haveit next to your computer and
it really helps you to comeout of that Whatever state
that you're in. Really, reallyquick. We can have a link
