Herdorf im Frühjahr 1945: Nach der Einnahme der Rheinbrücke bei Remagen am 9. März verschob sich der alliierte Fokus nach Osten, was Gebiete wie Herdorf südlich des Siegtals zunehmend exponierte.
In Herdorf verdichteten sich die Zeichen: Am 26. März wurde die Räumung der Zivilbevölkerung angeordnet. Viele suchten Zuflucht in Bergwerksstollen, wo entsetzliche Bedingungen herrschten. Die amerikanischen Angriffe der 8. US-Infanterie-Division begannen am 28./29. März. Nach anfänglich geringem Widerstand stießen die US-Truppen am Ortsrand auf Gegenwehr durch Panzerabwehrkanonen. Es folgte ein brutaler Häuserkampf, der bis Mitternacht dauerte. Der Preis für die Einnahme Herdorfs war hoch: Neun Zivilisten kamen ums Leben, mindestens acht deutsche Soldaten fielen, und auch auf amerikanischer Seite gab es Verluste. Nach der Eroberung stand die Gemeinde vor der schwierigen Aufgabe des Wiederaufbaus. Plünderungen und die Wiederherstellung der Ordnung waren immense Herausforderungen. Die Ereignisse in Herdorf sind ein Mikrokosmos des Kriegsendes, der zeigt, wie globale Konflikte dramatische und persönliche Auswirkungen auf lokaler Ebene hatten.
