Strange mysteries, unexplained phenomena.
And the shadows in between.
This is The InBetween Official Podcastwith your host,
Carol Ann!
You know that feelingâwhen time freezes, your chest tightens, and just for a split
(00:37):
second, your brain refuses to processwhat you're seeing?
That moment when you realizethat the world that you thought
you knew...isn't quite what you believed?
Our InBetweeners have lived these moments
and what they've encountered will shattereverything you think is possible.
Welcome to The InBetween.
(00:57):
I'm Carol Ann, and todaywe're diving into the unexplained
encountersof our own InBetweener community.
These aren't stories passed down
through generationsor discovered in dusty archives.
These are fresh wounds in reality, happening to ordinary people
just like you, in places you visit
every day.
(01:22):
This InBetweenerwould like to remain anonymous,
so we are going to call her Dee,and her sister, J.
The year is 2009, about 9 or 10 at night,
and Dee, whoâs 22 and J, whoâs 32,
are driving to the Walmartin the next town on a late-night run.
They live out in the countryof Bridgeville Delaware, surrounded
(01:43):
by fields.
Itâs nice, but Bridgevilledoesn't have any stores open that late.
Deeâs driving her carup to the stop sign at the end of her
small neighborhood road.
Across the street is a corn field,as far as the eye can see.
She looks to the left before she startsto pull away from the stop
sign to go right, when she hearsa big smack on one of her windows.
(02:07):
She throws the car in park and both girlsstart looking around at the windows
thinkingthey must have hit an owl or a bat.
Sounds funny, but stuff like thathappens in the country.
Neither of them see anything until theynotice movement near the windshield
wipers.
Something with long limbs starts
(02:28):
unfurling on her windshield.
Dee and J are frozen in fear.
On the windshield, they see something about 12 to 14 inches
long, muted sickly green in colorwith long legs and arms.
The body looks emaciated, super skinny,
(02:48):
and is segmented with the first segmentlooking like a chest moving up and down
like itâs breathing and the second segmentlooks like a stomach area.
The body is connected to a segmented neckwith an oval head,
almost like that of your standardgray alien, It has two large eyes
(03:10):
that are black like a spider's eyeand a mouth.
No nose.
No ears.
Behind it are thin wingsthat are made of four sections,
two pointing up and two pointing down.
Dee and J are both just sitting therein the dark, staring at something
that appears slightly humanoid but mostly
(03:32):
bug-like with alien looking features.
Then it starts screaming.
It sounds like the creature from âThe
Thing.â Both of them start screamingas whatever this thing is on
her windshield is turning its head, looking back
(03:53):
and forth between Dee and J.
This thing is intelligent.
Its eye contact is terrifying, with the stare that goes right
into Dee's head and makes Deefeel like it's trying to dissect her soul.
But at the same timeshe can't seem to look away.
(04:13):
Her fight or flight kicks in andshe starts trying to get her seatbelt off.
Her house is just off to the left.
She can see it.
So her plan is to make a run for it,
leaving her parked but still running car
right in the middle of the roadand her sister along with it.
But anything is better than staying rightwhere she's at right now.
(04:37):
Dee starts fighting with her seat belt,
which she can't quite seem to masterbecause she can't take her eyesâor
any other part of her brainfor that matterâoff of this creature.
J seesthat Dee's trying to make a break for it
and grabs her arm, screaming, âdon't open the door!â
(04:57):
They take their eyes off the creatureto look at each other for the first time
since this thing hit the car,and suddenly the screaming stops.
Their heads snap back to the windshieldand the creature's gone.
They take a few deep, shaky breaths
as Dee puts the car and driveand the two continue on their way
(05:18):
to Walmart in complete silence, like they're in shock.
They get about five minutes down the road,
and Dee says, âdidwe just see what I think we did?â
Jay says, if you just saw a ferry hitthe front of your car, then yes.
Since that fateful night, Deehas tried to rationalize what they saw.
(05:43):
She has looked into stick insects,
Praying mantis, luna moths,giant dobsonflies.
But nothing comes close to what they sawthat night.
Both girls are convincedthey encountered a fairy.
Not a Peter Pan, pretty, pink fairybut the old English ones
(06:03):
that steal your babyand try to steal your soul.
And who knows?
Maybe that chancemeeting with the front of Deeâs car
not only changed Dee and Jâs life, but saved someone elseâs.
Between the last
story, and this next storyfrom our faithful InBetween friends,
(06:24):
Deb and Rich, youârenever going to want to go
shopping again.
Just this past summer of 2024, Deb
and Richard are in Walmartnear their home in Washington state.
And theyârejust patiently waiting in line,
waiting for the elderly couplein front of them to move up far enough
(06:46):
so that they can put their stuffon the check out conveyor belt.
When the elderly man starts backing upslowly.
Deb takes a look to figure outwhat's going on here.
Why is this guy backing up?
And she sees him not just backing up,but trying to pull his cart back
with both hands, using all of his strength.
(07:08):
But he can't.
He looks like he'strying to back away from his wife.
Confused as to what exactly is going onhere, Deb looks at the wife
and sees her pulling the cart forwardand glaring at her husband.
Then she looks at Deb.
Deb sees that the woman's eyes are 100%solid black.
(07:31):
Freaked out, Deb immediately looks down, then looks at Richard, telling him,
âDon't look at that lady's eyes.âwithout even knowing what the problem is.
Richard startsscouting for a new checkout line.
He goes a few feet away, finds anotherline, and motions to Deb to join him.
As Deb is hurrying to join Richardâgetas far away from that woman
(07:55):
as she canâRichard can't helpbut steal a glance at the woman's eyes.
Once they're all checked outand back to their truck,
Richard says, âIlooked at that old lady's eyes.
I saw about a third of one of her eyesfrom the side.
It was solid black.â Keep in mind
Deb didn't tell him what she saw.
(08:17):
So Richard is just confirming for herthat she's not crazy.
Deb says looking back on this encounter, she feels really bad for the old man.
Richard wishes he had thought to stopand say a prayer for the woman,
But both of them saythey were just way too freaked out
to even think about anythingexcept getting out of thereâ
(08:41):
and that includesthe thought of taking a picture.
Deb says it's just like all those people
who never rememberto take a picture of Bigfoot.
At that moment, it was absolutely thefurthest thing from her mind.
I bet all those people who makethe meme videos
(09:01):
about Walmart shoppersnever saw anything like that.
I'm sure glad I haven't.
But our next encounter shows usthat things that look scary
aren't necessarily always bad.
The InBetweener for this next story
also would like to remain anonymous,so we're going to call him Shawn.
(09:21):
Most of his early life,Shawn lived in a house on Shelbyville
Road in Indianapolis, Indianathat still stands there today.
He still remembers the gigantic yardthey had to play in,
and that it was right down the roadfrom a gated community with a pond
where all of the ducks and geesewould come over to their yard
(09:42):
every single day at the very same time, like clockwork.
However, the house was not quiteas idyllic on the inside
as it was in the outside.
He rememberslots of unexplainable things happening,
but most memorably was the old time
radio that played throughout the house, except was so faint that no one
(10:06):
could quite really tell what was playingor pinpoint where it was coming from.
And the disembodied voices.
sounded like a motherand son having a conversation,
but no one could ever quitemake out what they were saying.
Everyone could hear them, and Shawn'smom did her best
to normalize the situationfor her already freaked out kids.
(10:32):
But then things geta little more real for Shawn.
In this particular house, at night,it gets super hot in his room
and Shawn sleeps with a nightlight, which casts an orange glow
all throughout the room, so he can prettymuch see everything, at least a little.
His room gets so hotthat it makes it hard for him to sleep.
(10:54):
so many nights.
He just lies there for a while, tryingto forget the heat so he can fall asleep.
And each nightthat he has a hard time falling asleep.
He feels more and more like
he's not alone and not in a good way.
On this particular night,Shawn is just lying there,
(11:16):
tossing and turning, again
having a really hard timefalling asleep because it's so hot.
And heâs just about to doze off, when he hears heavy breathing
coming from the otherside of the room behind him.
He just lies therefor what feels like an eternity,
(11:36):
just listening to this deep,
raspy breathing sound.
He shuts his eyestight and starts to pray.
Just hoping that might make it go away.
But instead, the breathing sound startsgetting closer.
Shawn startspraying and wishing even harder,
(11:58):
but the breathing keeps getting closerand louder.
He has his own special comfortblankets on the bed with him,
so he grabsthem, wraps himself up in them, hoping
this comfort barrier will keepwhatever nightmare this is away.
But it doesn't work.
As he liesthere, sweating underneath these blankets,
(12:21):
he hears the breathinggetting closer and closer.
And just as it seemsthis thing must be right over his bed,
everything goes silentâjust for a moment.
Shawn opens his eyes, thinking he has to be dreaming,
but the breathing starts up again, right behind him.
(12:43):
He musters the courage to take a peek, rolls over, and sees a woman
standing over him with long stringyblonde hair that covers most of her face.
She doesnâtlook like a ghostly apparition.
She looks like something solid, like a real person standing in his room.
The nightlight in the room
is casting shadows on her face,so he canât really see her features.
(13:06):
But he can see her, just standing there, staring at him,
still making those raspy breathing sounds.
Shawn rolls back over, burrows back under the blankets, slams
his eyes shut, and starts praying again, hoping this time, itâll work.
He has no idea how long heâs lying there, pleading for divine intervention,
(13:31):
when he noticesthe breathing has gone away,
or at least for another moment.
And starts right back up again.
But this time it's further away.
Like all the way across the room, over by his door.
Awww, man!
It's in front of the door!
He steals himselfand takes another peek. Yup.
(13:51):
It's right in front of his door.
There's no escape.
What he does next, Shawn can only guess
is the sum of a level of fear
so high, added to a complete loss of hope,
which ended up equalingjust a little bit of bravery.
He grabs his comfort blanketsand holds them in front of him
(14:13):
like a shield of protection, jumpsout of bed, runs past the creepy woman
through the door, and straight into his mom's room.
His mom is jolted awake by Shawn screamingabout some ghost woman,
and Shawn does not sleep in his room againfor at least two weeks.
Looking back on the incidentthrough the lens of time, Shawn believes
(14:36):
the woman he saw was the motherthey could hear talking to her son.
Maybe she just wanted to be close
to a little boy like hers, one more time.
No thank you.
It never ceases to amaze me that peoplecan grow up to be perfectly functioning
(14:57):
adults, after having experienced thingslike that as a kid.
But ethereal being encountersare not the only things out there
that can leave a mark on a kid's psyche.
This story comes to us from Monk Zilla.
So we're just going to call him Mike.
When Mike is 12 or 13 years old, so around
2002, 2003, he lives with his grandfather,
(15:19):
who unfortunately spends his daysin a wheelchair.
Mike being the creative young boy
that he is, startsusing this to his advantage.
dawns on himthat if he misses the school bus,
he gets to stay home because there'sno one there to drive him to school.
So he starts coming upwith all kinds of excuses as to why he's
(15:42):
missing the bus, from homeless peoplemessing with him, to mean older bullies.
All of them complete fiction.
One particular day, after creating yetanother excuse to stay home,
Mike decides to go visit a frienda few blocks away
that he just happens to knowis also not at school that day.
(16:04):
So Mike jumps on his bike, that's way too
small and slow for him,and heads out to his friend's house.
As he pulls onto the streetwhere his friend lives,
a huge shadow engulfs him.
He looks up and sees the largest birdhe has ever seen flying
right over his head.
(16:26):
Mike thinks, âThis is impossible.
This bird has to be at leasttwo school busses
long!âIt flies to a tree across the street,
hugging the side of it,but it's so big it can't fit in the tree.
Visions of unsuspecting mice
being picked up right off the groundby opportunistic hawks
(16:47):
flood Mike's head, quicklyfollowed by the thought
that with this thing,he might just be the mouse.
The bike he's on is way too small and slowto be of any help in this situation.
So he ditches the bike and runsall the way home, waiting the whole time
to feel the giant talonsdigging into his back.
(17:10):
He gets brave enough to look overhis shoulder a couple of times,
but he doesn't see it again.
He comes crashingthrough the front door of his house
and immediately spillsthe entire terrifying scene to grandpa.
Grandpa,considering all of the storytelling
that Mike has been doing lately,of course doesn't believe him at first,
(17:31):
but eventually softens his stancewhen he sees
just how shaken up mike is.
Grandpa says it probably wasn'treally as big as you think it was,
but Mike knows what he sawand doesn't ever want to go outside again.
The very next morning, Mike refusesto go outside to catch the bus,
(17:53):
and grandpa is sure this is just
another one of those excusesnot to go to school.
So he does what any adult would do
in that situation and shoosMike out the door.
Not even a minute after Mikegets to the bus stop.
He sees the bird again,
and it is indeed as enormousas he thought it was.
(18:17):
Now he really doesn't feel likestanding out there as bait
with this thing flying around,so he immediately turns right
around and runs back home, catching the wrath of grandpa.
As soon as he walks in the door.
But he doesn't care.
He knows what he saw and he doesn't
care about the good laugheveryone has at his expense.
(18:40):
They don't know what he saw.
It isn't until the internet becomesmore popular, and stories from people
just like Mike, sharing their experiencesof seeing something just like Mike saw,
start to get published, that Mike can finally say, I told you so.
(19:00):
And Ithought the gigantic peliated woodpecker
pecking at my house was bad enough!
I hoped to never see what Mike saw.
But lest you start to thinkthat all encounters with the paranormal
are terror inducing affairs,
I leave you with this story.
This story comes from yet
(19:21):
another faithful InBetweenerwho also wants to remain anonymous.
So we're just going to call him Chad.
Chad, who's from Caboolture, Queenslandin Australia, has worked as an R.N.
in an aged care facility in DeceptionBay for a while,
and has had somepretty interesting experiences.
But the most interesting by far, happened one night about two years ago
(19:46):
while he was on night duty,Not long after he started working there.
Chad has an older gentleman in his roundsfor the night who is in the palliative
care stage,so he doesn't have much time left.
The man's room is in a secure unit
within the hospital reservedfor the dementia residents.
And part of that securityis having sensors on the doorways.
(20:08):
So if somebody gets out of bed and wandersout of their room, the hospital staff
is immediately notified and can goget them back into bed safely.
So Chad checks on himregularly as the hours pass
and notices that his breathing patternhas changed to a particular pattern,
which serves as a heads up to caregiversthat death is near.
(20:33):
So Chad leaves the man's roomand heads to the nurses station
so he can call the man's familyto let them know
that they might want to come nowto say their last goodbyes.
As he's looking for the paperworkfor the undertaker,
he hears the sensor on the man's doorwaygo off.
Well, that's odd.
The man has a personal caregiverwho was in the room earlier,
(20:55):
but then she left to go seeanother patient.
And Chadcan see the door of the man's room
and hasn't seen the caregivercome back yet.
So Chad gets up to go check on him.
With a little hint of intuitiontelling him the man has passed on.
So he also grabs a stethoscope on his way.
When he gets to the door,he sees another staff member
(21:17):
coming through the secure door of the unitwith the man's daughter.
Chad turns off the door sensorand all three entered the room together.
Turns out Chad's intuition was right.
The man had indeed passed on.
And as Chad's going through the standardend of life checks
just to make sure, the doorsensor goes off again,
(21:40):
even thoughChad had already turned it off.
Must be a glitch.
He leaves the room so the man's daughtercan have some time to grieve privately
while he goes back to the nurse's stationto call the undertaker
and fill out the paperwork.
As he's sitting at the desk, the bed buzzer,
the thing that patients can press to callthe nurse, goes off three timesâeach
(22:03):
time sending Chad to the roomto check on the daughter.
The daughter tells himâI havenât touched it.â
She says it goes offevery time she gets up to leave.
When she finally does leave, the personal caregiver goes in the room
and opens the window in her beliefthat doing so lets the spirit out.
And all's quiet in the roomfor the rest of the night.
(22:26):
Since that night, Chadhas put together a theory
that would accountfor all of that strangeness.
He thinks that when the man passed away,he came out into the hall
to tell Chad he had died, trippingthe sensor the first time.
After a while,he decides to come back into the room,
tripping the sensor the second timeto let them know he was back.
(22:50):
Not wanting his daughter to leave,he kept triggering the bed buzzer
as a way to keep her aroundfor just a little longer.
Maybe that open windowis exactly what he needed
to be able to finally go home.
(23:11):
