Upstate New York 2018,
A nighttime hunt for troublesomecoyotes takes a shocking turn
(00:39):
when two men encounter a creaturenot of this world.
With its unearthly gaze fixed upon them, a
pulse pounding fight for survival ensuesagainst an unimaginable horror
ripped from their darkest nightmares.
Welcome to the InBetween. I'm Carol Ann
and you had better get comfortablefor this epic dogman encounter.
(01:01):
the Brandon lives
in a very rural area of Shenangoin upstate New York.
His house is on a roadthat is about seven or eight miles long
and is surrounded by woods and fields.
There are only aboutfive houses on that road
(01:22):
and it takes about 25 minutesjust to walk to the nearest neighbor.
Brandon has 192 acres
out there - 50 of them are woods.
The house is about 40 feet off the roadand surrounded
by thick woods,as well as the land across the street.
It's very quiet at night, and Brandon’shouse is so secluded
(01:44):
that it would take quite an effortto get help if you needed it.
His story starts on February 2nd, 2012,
a day that will change his life forever.
He gets up in the morningand kisses his family
goodbye and goes to work around 5 a.m.
as usual.
His wife, we’ll call her Amy, stays homewith their newborn and their dog, Maya.
(02:06):
At work, Brandon gets a call from Amy.
She says, “Hey, do you know thatall of the cows are huddled up
in one corner closest to the house, awayfrom the wood line?
And they've been there all day.
They won't eat,they won't move. They won't do
Brandon's
really busy at work and says, “Youknow, don't worry about it.
I'll check it out when I get home.”
(02:27):
And he just kind of figuresthat there are some coyotes out there
that are messing with them because coyotesare a regular nuisance in the area.
So he just assumes at the time that that'swhat it is.
Right before he's ready to leavework for the day.
He gets another phone call from Amy.
She says, “I can't get Maya to go outside.
I literally have to drag her outsideby the collar
(02:49):
to pee.” Brandon says, “I'mleaving for home now.
I'll deal with it when I get Nowhe's thinking, this is pretty weird.
the cows are all bundled up in the corner, and now the dog won't go outside?
What the hell's going on here?
And he's well aware of the factthat animals often sense
things that people don't.
So something is going on.
(03:09):
It's dusk as he's pulling up to the houseand Brandon sees the cows - twelve
full grown cowsscrunched up in like a 20 by 20 foot
area in the closest cornerof their fenced in plot.
And he's thinking to himself,“What is this?”
He's never seen them do this before.
They're almost on top of each other.
(03:29):
They're climbing upand trying to get closer and closer,
huddled up into the corner.
And the fence is electrified, but they don't care.
And they've touched it so many times nowthat they've actually tripped the breaker.
They're obviously spooked.
Something is going on.
And he's thinking, “Wow.
That's got to be one really big packof coyotes for them to be this freaked.
(03:53):
I guess I'm going to have to deal with
He gets out of the truck, grabs his workstuff and starts walking up the drive
toward the house,When he hears the deepest raspy, gurgling
scream like howl, immediately
sending chills down his spine as the hair
on the back of his neck stands upand he thinks, “What the hell was
(04:18):
He has hunted and fished in those woods
since he was a kid,and he has never heard anything like that.
But again, going by his experience,he thinks, “I guess,
one of those coyotes just baggedBut what was that scream?
Mountain lion, maybe.
The New York Departmentof Environmental Conservation
or DEC, says that there are no mountainlions in this area.
(04:41):
But Brandon knows there are.
He knows that there have been
some sightings around the area,so he figures, well, maybe that's it.
But something still is different.
He's heard their screams on YouTube videosand that's not it.
So Brandon gets insideand Amy barrages him about
all the things that happened since he leftthat she didn't tell him about.
(05:05):
In the early morning, she says thatshe heard scratching at the window,
a real deep scratching noiseon the side of the house
and not like a branch in the windtype of scratch.
Brandon says, “What do you mean?
I don't understand.” Amy says, “Comelook at this.” She walks him outside
onto the big deck that wraps aroundmost of the house and Brandon sees
(05:27):
big scratches on the side of the house.
There are four deeply cut lines into
the siding.
“What the hell happened?” And he's tryingto think what could have done
There are no branchesor anything like that
that would have rubbed upagainst the house.
So he asked Amy, “Didyou bang into the house with anything?
(05:49):
Did you move something onto the deck, like some lawn chairs or something?”
Amy says, “No, I heard the scraping soundand came out a little while later
to see this.” Brandon says, “Okay, well,
then I have no idea what this is.” asthey're walking back in the same howling
scream he heard before happens again
(06:12):
and it shakes him to his core.
Amy's eyes get huge, Brandon
says, “Didyou hear that?” And Amy says, “Yeah.”
And he says, “What the hell was that?”And she says, “I have no idea.
You would know better than I would.”“I have absolutely no clue.
I have never heard that noiseAnd they can see
(06:33):
all the cattle bunched up in the corner, pushing and pushing,
climbing on top of each other, trying to get out of their fenced in area
as that scream pierces the evening air.
he and Amyget back inside, and Brandon loads up
his shotgun, picks up the phone and calls his neighbor.
“Hey, Gene.
Come on down.
(06:54):
Let'sgo for a ride out back in the buggy.”
The buggy is like a four wheeler, razortype thing.
“Come down.
We got a coyote problem out herethat I need some help with.”
So Gene comes over and Brandonexplains to him what has been going on.
He says, “Haveyou heard that scream at Gene says, “No.”
And sounding like an idiot, Brandon triesto explain that it sounds like a woman
(07:18):
who has been smoking 30 cigaretsan hour for the last 65 years
- deep and raspy, like a woman screaming, but not.
just looks at Brandonlike he's lost his mind.
So they load up and Brandon tells Amy,
“We're going out backto get rid of some of those
Now, what Brandon normally does onthese coyote hunts is use a wireless call,
(07:42):
which is a speaker boxwith a wireless remote that can reproduce
different animal calls - like a dyingrabbit or a squirrel or something.
And the coyotes can hear that
and it brings them closer, thinking there's easy prey around.
And he has a spotlightthat he puts a red lens cover
on because, apparently, they can't see the color red.
(08:04):
So they throw all that stuffinto the back of the buggy and head out.
And as they're heading down the roadthat leads to the road to the back,
Brandon explains to Genewhat's going on with the cows
and the dogand that he's not really sure what to do.
It's dark out nowand they ride about 2 minutes
before they turn down the dirtroad into the backwoods.
(08:24):
And as they do,they see multiple groups of deer
breaking out of the woods, running right at them.
There are white tails bobbing in the airlike a parade of flags
in groups of threeor four, about 25 feet apart,
as the spooked herd flies past
(08:45):
within ten feet on eitherside of the buggy on their way
toward the road, and the safetyof the woods on the other side.
Brandon knows something is wrongand thinks to himself,
“Wow, We really have some work to
The dirtroad is about five or six feet wide,
and then on each side of the roadthere's about two feet of brush.
(09:07):
And then right on the other side of that, are the woods on both sides.
So they get going down the roadand Brandon tells Gene, “If
you see anything before we get down thereon the way, shoot what you
So they're flying down the dirt trailat about 45 miles an hour.
And once they're about two milesor so into the woods - and keep in mind
(09:27):
that the woods are thickand it's dark outside - Brandon hears
something smashing through the woodsnext to them.
Whatever it is, it sounds like a rhinocrashing through everything in his path.
And as he's just buzzing along,he thinks, “Wait.
We don't have any bears or moosein this area.”
(09:48):
So he says to Gene, “Whatthe hell is that?” He starts to slow down
and then stops with the buggy just idling,
when the worst feeling of his life,
like somebody is watching him, washes over him.
Something is watching him rightnow, as the goosebumps
pop out and the hairstands up on the back of his neck.
(10:10):
Gene's shaky voice quietlyutters, “It's dead quiet.
Something's not right.
We need to leave right
Outside of the idling buggy,
there's no sound - no animals, no nothing.
And Brandon tries to keep his cooleven though he feels it too.
And it's intense.
(10:31):
And he says, “Don't get all freaked out.
We got guns.
Just relax.” At the same time, telling himself that there is nothing
in the woods that he hasn't already seenat some point in the past 30 years.
No way.
So they sit for maybe another 20 secondswhen Brandon shuts the buggy off,
(10:52):
so there's no more idle, as the wave ofcomplete silence rushes into their ears.
And he hears this heavy, heavy breathing.
The wood line is about 6to 8 feet on each side of them
with complete darkness, just the lights on in front of the buggy.
(11:13):
And Brandon says, “Dude, do you hearthat?” and grabs the spotlight,
pulls the red lens cover off and points itin the direction of the breathing.
But before he turns it on, he turns toJean and says, Point your gun over here.
As he turns on the spotlightand scans the tree line,
keep in mind, the spotlight is a millioncandle power spotlight.
(11:34):
So really bright, eight or ten inchesin diameter with a trigger to light it up.
The spotlight gets to the general areawhere he heard the breathing.
Now, what Brandon's about to tell youis what has ruined
his reputationfor being an honest and true man.
And while many may lamentthe loss of said reputation,
(11:56):
he wouldn't change a thingbecause he knows what he saw.
As the spotlight gets to the general areawhere he heard all that heavy breathing.
He looks inand sees some kind of hairy animal.
He could see a hairy armwrapped around a tree
and he's thinking to himself, “Whoa, what the hell is
(12:16):
He can see part of its headand on the back
looks like ears, pointy earsthat look like daggers
about 8 to 10 incheslong on the top of its head.
He sees this...whatever it is, turnand step away a little bit from the tree.
And he sees its face.
He sees a snout like a werewolf.
(12:37):
That's all he could think of.
It's. This is a werewolf.
But his brain isn't working properlybecause he's also thinking
this isn't real.
There's no wayI am seeing what I think I'm seeing.
To Brandon, it looks exactly likethe werewolf from the movie Van Helsing.
Like 98% the same.
(12:57):
Everything is dead silentexcept for the werewolve’s
breathing and Brandon’sheartbeat in his ears.
He is shaken to his core.
He is never seen anything like thisin his life.
This isn't supposed to be real.
This isn't a real thing.
Brandon has no idea how much time goes
by, ashe just keeps staring at this thing.
(13:20):
It turns a little more and he sees itseyes - a goldish, amber color.
The snout looks like a very canine
dog snout, but it's got a massive head
with short hair, and he can almost see the skin underneath.
He can see its arm a little bit,but mostly just its hand.
And he's trying to unscramblein his brain.
(13:44):
He's seeing all of these thingskind of at once,
and they're not making any sense.
It steps away from the treeand makes some kind of cracking noise -
like if you had 15 or 20 peoplecracking their knuckles
all at the same timeand breaking bones into a microphone.
It stands up on its two back legs, which are backwards like dog haunches.
(14:06):
This thing is 8 to 9 feet tall.
This thing is so bigthat at the 15 to 18 feet
that he and Jean are from it,he can see it clear as day.
There's no question he has it right
in his spotlight, which is fully chargedand brighter than ever.
But he just keeps staring.
(14:28):
It's chestlooks like some Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mr.
Universe, body builder, chest.
This thing is jacked.
Its arms, from the shoulder to the elbow, look pretty normal.
But from the elbow to the wristis extra long,
almost twice as long as the top part.
And it's handsfive fingers with nails on them.
(14:51):
Sharp ones- like Freddy Krueger, black knives
on the tips of its fingers,a couple of inches long.
And stillnone of this is processing with Brandon.
He doesn't understandwhat it is that he's looking at.
He can see it's ripped -the massive chest,
huge arms, abs, like some 20 year old at a gym.
(15:13):
Its waist is smaller and its legsare pretty skinny, but also jacked.
And it's breathing heavily, which he assumes is from barreling
through the woods, pacing them at 40 miles
an hour, smashing through big branches.
Brandon thinks this has to be a nightmare.
(15:34):
He tries to close his eyes and shakes
his head to wake up, and is still there.
It's real.
And he's thinking to himself,“What's my next move?”
He has no idea what to do.
He's stuck.
his brain is trying to processwhat he's seeing for
what feels like forever, Genelets out a full volume scream.
(16:00):
And whatever crap hadn't been scaredout of Brandon before, sure is now.
He's never been so scaredin his entire life.
With the staring contest now over, Genefires three shots in a row at this thing.
Now he's firing a Remington 870 five shot
pump with high brass slugsfrom 15 to 18 feet away.
(16:23):
Jean firesthe first shot, and Brandon's eardrums
feel like they're going to explode, because Jean is right
next to himin a somewhat enclosed vehicle.
But he still hasthe spotlight on the creature,
and he sees that first bullethit its chest.
It rips the whole right sidepectoral muscle almost entirely off.
(16:48):
Brandon can see the ripped skin.
He sees the blood.
This thing is real.
It's an animal.
It bleeds.
And it screams.
Gene fires two more shots.
But this thing is fast. Real fast.
It jumps - no exaggeration - 15feet up into the tree
(17:10):
and almost thirty feet across the dirtroad into the other side of the woods.
The shock and the overwhelming fear
have lulled Brandon into a systemshut down trance.
But between the shotgunand the bionic jump,
his head comes back togetherand he quickly starts up the buggy.
He cranks the wheelall the way to the left.
(17:32):
Back tires are spinning, throwing dirtbehind him in a cartoonish
three point turn.
He gets it turned around and he's headeddown the road, gas pedal on the floor.
He screams at Gene, “Whatthe f--- was that?” And Gene screams
back, “My gun’s jammed!
My gun’s jammed!” And Brandon'slooking over the shotgun,
(17:52):
looking forward, looking at the shotgun, looking
screaming at him, “Hurry up!
Get it loaded.”
He doesn't know where this thing is,and he doesn't know when it's coming back.
Brandon triesto reach down for his pistol,
but the road is full of pot holes
and the gunis bouncing around on the floor somewhere.
They are two miles into the woodsin the pitch dark
(18:15):
with no one and nothing around them.
They're a long way from home, and Gene'sgun is jammed, and he can't reach his own.
He doesn't know what to do.
He does the only thing that he can doand keeps his foot on the gas.
He's doing about 50 and sees Genelooking through the driver's
side window and turns his head leftto see what he's looking at.
(18:38):
Next to him, about two feet from him,he sees the creature.
It's runningright next to them on two legs.
Its arms are hanging out in front, like it's going to tackle something,
almost like it's about to fall faceforward.
He can hear its feethit the ground - boom,
boom, boom -just taking these giant strides.
(19:01):
Now, this buggy is about fiveand a half feet tall.
This thing is hunched over, almostleaning forward like it's about to fall.
But it isn't.
It's so close that Brandon can see
all the little tiny creasesof the muscles on its body.
He can see its hair is blackish gray,
and thin enough to be able to see its skinunderneath.
(19:24):
He sees its abs contracting and releasingas it breathes.
He can see the muscles in its legsget tight
because they're rightin front of his face.
At this point,Brandon can't even make a sound.
He can't scream or even get any words out.
He can't believe that this thing's running
next to them at a full sprint.
(19:47):
This thing is running right next to them, leaning down, looking in the window.
He sees its eyes, those amber colored eyes.
And he is more terrifiedthan he has ever dreamt he could be.
Brandon's trying to get the buggy to gofaster.
Gene's just staring at this thing.
And even in the dark,Brandon can see that all
(20:10):
the color has drained out of his face.
Brandon keeps looking forward, then over at Gene, and he's
hoping that Gene will snap out of itand load this thing up.
He's got one arm on the steering wheel, one hand down on the floor
trying to find his gun.
He cranks the wheel to the right to tryto move further away from this thing.
(20:33):
But this thing puts out a massive arm, into the light shining in front of the two
lights of the buggywhich means Brandon gets a really good
look at all five fingers
and those black, long, sharp nails.
It puts its hand on the driver's sidelight
and Brandon feelsthe buggy start to slow down.
(20:57):
He thinks, “No way!”This thing has the intelligence
to put its hand in front of the vehicle.
He doesn't knowif it was trying to slow them down
or maybe just trying to messwith their lights because all they have
for lights right now are the two frontlights of the buggy pointing forward.
And that giant handhas now just blotted out half of that.
(21:21):
So he sees this hand in front of himholding them back.
He feels the buggy slowing down.
And he looks back over at it,and he can see it looking in.
And he sees its teeth.
Unlike a dog'sthat are kind of rounded at the end,
these are sharp, seriously sharp.
(21:41):
The teeth are chomping down over and over.
And every time that they do,Brandon can hear them.
And he's looking over at it, lookingforward, looking over, looking forward.
It's got its hand on the front.
This buggy is slowing down, even though he's got his foot
all the way to the floor.
(22:02):
can hear the weightand the strain on the motor,
but he's still slowing down, and getting really scared.
Now, as the creature's looking at Brandonand Gene inside of the buggy
with itslowing down, Brandon thinks, “This is it.
We're done.” Just then it smiles.
Its lips curl up on the sides, and it smiles.
(22:26):
And Brandon feels his world fall away.
In that one moment, everything he's ever known to be good
and true is takenand smashed to the ground.
this thing's aura.
Its whole demeanor is the most evil thingBrandon's ever felt in his life.
(22:48):
It projects this feelingof being emotionally distraught
and completely terrified worse
than if it were the end of the world,or he'd lost his entire family.
He doesn't understand how it's able
to make him feel that way,but it was beyond merely fright.
It's beyond merely terror.
(23:09):
It completely drains his soul.
His whole life startsflashing through his head because he knows
this is the end.
He feels a sadness, a feeling like he'sjust getting started, that he hasn't
really done anything with his life yetand he's never going to get the chance.
He's just looking forward, trying to driveand looking at this creature.
(23:32):
He's thinking about his baby girland he's thinking about his wife
and what's going to happen to them.
So he's racking his braincompletely distraught,
trying to figure out what to do when -And he sees Gene
has the shotgun in front of his face, pointing out the driver's side window.
pulls the barrel up to fire again, when Brandon sees this thing disappear.
(23:57):
Gene still fires, but he misses it.
Brandon's eardrums are explodingfrom the shotgun’s close range.
But the thing is gone.
Brandon thinks, smart is this
It saw that the gun was pulled up.
It knows what it did to it.
It knows what the consequences are fromthe end of that barrel.
(24:20):
It knows.
And when that shotgun gets held up,this thing lets
go of the front of the vehicle.
Brandon feelsthe strain released off the motor.
They speed back up and this thing's gone.
Brandon has no ideahow much time has gone by.
It feels like 2 hours.
And as they're going down the road,he thinks to himself, “That thing
(24:42):
just smirked at me.
It was taunting me.
It was trying to stop the buggy.
It had a man's hand with claws.”
His mind is out of control, trying to sort through everything.
And he's certainly gladthat it's not next to him anymore.
(25:03):
But he's still terrifiedbecause he has no clue where the thing is.
That question is answeredabout one second later
when he hears itcrashing through the woods next to them.
And this thing is just boom, boom, boom,
blasting through branches,through everything.
(25:24):
And all he can dois keep his foot to the floor.
But it stays back in the woods.
It doesn't come back out yet.
He tells Gene, “If that thing comes backout, hit it again,
hit it again, hit it again.”Gene's got his gun out the window
at the ready and Brandon staring straightahead, arms locked on the steering wheel,
(25:44):
foot to the flooruntil they finally hit the road.
But Brandon doesn't slow down.
He hits the road, cranks the wheelall the way to the right,
the back tires sliding off the graveland onto the road.
Tires are squealing.
And then he sees it.It tried to flank them.
It tried to jump out right thereat the edge of the woods and cut them off.
(26:07):
Or at least that's what Brandon thinksit was trying to do.
The buggy slides onto the roadand they lose a little speed.
But Brandon'sstill got his foot to the floor.
He can feel Gene leaning into himfrom turning
at 40 miles an hourand skidding onto the road.
The beast jumps easilyanother 20-25 feet out of the woods, onto
(26:27):
the side of the road and into the ditchbehind them as the buggy straightens out.
Gene sees it, too, and swingsthe shotgun around to the back.
The creature sees the gunpointing back in his direction,
lets out a huge roar -the same scream Brandon heard before -
goes down on all fours, and Brandonand Gene watch its dark silhouette
(26:49):
launch back over into the woods - again,at least 20 to 25 feet.
The two men get back to the house andBrandon pulls the buggy into the driveway.
He stops and both men sit in the vehicle
for a few seconds in complete silence.
Brandon grabsthe garage door opener, pulls the buggy
(27:10):
into the garageand hits the button to close the door.
He's staring behind him out the doorand reaches
down to grab his pistol, which is a .357 Magnum.
It's a five shot revolver,
and it would have doneabsolutely nothing to this creature.
This thing got shot from 18 feet awaywith a high brass
slug from a 12 gaugewhich ripped it chest open.
(27:34):
And this thing didn't even care.
It just got pissed off.
But he's got his pistol in his shakinghand, pointing out the back,
and he sees Jean's got his shotgun outthe other side, pointing toward the back.
And they watch the garagedoor slowly close,
waiting to see this thing's feetjust show up and rip the door off.
(27:57):
As the space betweenthe bottom of the door and the concrete
get smaller and smaller and smaller.
And he's thinking, Ookay.
I don't see it yet.
I don't see it And they sit thereuntil finally it closes all the way.
Now, Brandon thinks, “My family!
I got to get inside.”So he shuts the buggy off,
opens the door and looks around.
(28:19):
He doesn't see it.
He doesn't hear it.
So he runs insidelike a lunatic and says, “Hey,
we're back” as casually as he can muster.
He didn't want to say anything.
What's he going to say?
That they were just attackedby a werewolf?
Amy's going totell him, “Quit drinking, you
He isn't able
to even explain anythingand really doesn't want to,
(28:42):
because that would put the fearin his family.
His two precious girls. Nope!
Can't do that.
Brandon goes back out into the garage with
He looks at Gene and says, “Dude, what the f--- was that
And Gene says, “Brandon, I don't know.
That's not supposed to be real.”Brandon says, “That was a werewolf.”
(29:05):
Jean says, “I'venever seen anything like that in my life.”
So how does this thing even exist?
Brandon has never seen this thing before, and he's been in the woods
since he'sbeen old enough to squeeze a trigger.
Brandon feels his heartbeat slowing downand some kind of sanity
coming back as he's trying to think aboutwhat this thing could have been.
(29:27):
And the only thing that keeps popping intohis head
is the stereotypical werewolffrom the movies.
So now he's in fear that this thing'sgoing to come into his house,
because it's got his scentand it's pissed.
Gene blew the whole rightpectoral muscle clean off.
It's bleeding. It's mad.
(29:48):
He has no idea what's going to happennext.
The two men only talkfor about 15 minutes,
just going overwhat they had seen in detail
so that they could both kind ofput a cap on the whole experience.
And it's a very difficult conversation, because it's not supposed to be real.
And they areboth just are completely stunned
(30:11):
that this creature
was physically standing in front of them, and had done what it had done.
And the level of intelligence of the thing
is beyond any creaturethat Brandon has ever seen.
He tells Gene, “Pleasedon't say anything about this to my wife.”
And Gene says, “Iwon't if you don't.” Gene tells
(30:32):
Brandon he needs to get back to his houseright now.
Brandon says,“Okay, let's meet up tomorrow.
Call me when you get home,so I know you made it.
So Jean leaves and calls Brandon
a few minutes later to let him knowhe made it home just fine.
Brandon goes upstairs and Amy says, “So
what the hell was Hesays, “It’s a coyote issue out there.
(30:52):
Some, some type of dogHe doesn’t want to lie to her,
but he doesn't want herto feel the same fear that he's feeling.
He doesn't want her to lose hertrust and love of the woods
the way he just did.
So he says to her, “It'san issue with some dogs.”
And she says, “What do you mean?
(31:12):
What kind of dogs?
Coyotes?”And he says, “Yeah, something like
He doesn't sleep that nightand he doesn't say much to his wife.
He also doesn't go to work the next day,
or offer to help cook dinner,or any of the usual odd
tinkering he usually does around the houseevery day.
Amy asks, “What's going on with you?
You're not sleeping. You're not paying attention to things.
(31:34):
You're not doing the thingsthat you normally do.
And you haven't gone to work
Now, Brandon is the kind of guythat spends most of the summer
cutting and stacking firewood, and he's excited to be able to see that
he's the one that did that work,to be able to keep his family warm.
He likes to be that kind of man.
He likes to be able to do the work, see the difference
(31:57):
he's made - fixing the house, learning anything, electrical windows,
siding, painting, even any kind of remodeling stuff.
He likes to know that he did that.
He fixed this for his family.
He kept his family warm.
He fed his family with the squirrelor the rabbit or the deer,
(32:17):
with the fish that he caught.
It was his ritual to get up every morningand throw wood in the woodstove.
And now he wasn't doing any of that.
Amy says, “Something's going on with you.
You need to tell me the truth.
What did you see in those woodsthe other night?” Brandon says, “Okay.
(32:38):
You're not going to believe this.”He sits down
and he tells her what happenedand it scares her.
He leaves out some of the gorier details, but he explains to her
what he saw and says, don't know what I'm supposed to do.” “But
I don't want you going outsideuntil I can figure something Amy says,
(32:59):
need to call the police.” Brandon says,“The police are going to do anything.
They're going to look at me like I'ma nut job and tell me to lay off the weed.
But a little more time goes by,and he thinks, “You know what?
I am going to call the police.” He'sjust going to let them know
that there's something in the woods, some kind of rabid dog.
(33:20):
Yeah. He'll go with that.
So he calls them up
and tells them the rabid dog thingto at least get them to come out.
So Cayuga County sheriff shows up.
It's a small town, so Brandonactually knows the sheriff personally.
The sheriff pulls in the drivewaywith a couple of officers.
They exchange
small town pleasantries for a few minutesuntil the sheriff finally says,
(33:43):
“What exactly do you have going on aroundhere?” And Brandon says,
I talk to you privately for a minute, please?” Sheriff says,
The sheriff tells the DEC guys ,who
Brandon's never met or seen before, “Canyou guys just hang over there
for a minute?” And Brandon pullsthe sheriff aside and says,
“Listen, I had an incidentwith Geno the other night.
(34:05):
What I'm about to tell you, you've got to promise me
that you'll actually look into itand you believe
Now, keep in mind, Brandon has builthis entire reputation on being able
to be heard and understood and believed -and not being a boozer.
What he is about to explain to the sheriffis way out of character for him.
(34:28):
But he does it anyway.
So he starts taking the sheriffthrough the whole encounter.
And he can tell that the sheriff believeseverything.
They are on the same plane field.
And everything is fine upuntil the point when he starts
explaining what this creature looked like.
And he sees the blood drainout of the sheriff's face,
(34:51):
just like Gene'sdid the night when it happened.
The sheriff stops taking notes
and goes from comfortable to uncomfortable- real quick.
He closes his little bookand looks at Brandon.
“Are you sure that's what yousaw?” And Brandon says, “I'm
100% positive.”And the sheriff says, “All right, sit
(35:12):
The sheriff goes back to his carand makes a call.
When he comes back, he says, think we can have this dealt with.
I'm going to come back tomorrowand we'll do something
a little bit further on this.” Brandonsays, “What do you mean, ‘Deal with this’?
What are you going to do?”And the sheriff says, “I'm not sure.”
And Brandon gets the distinct impressionthat he knows what's going on,
(35:33):
that this is not his first timedealing with this scenario.
Brandon could see by the look on his facethat he was terrified, too.
Maybe he was reliving a situationthat he got into.
Who knows?
But he could tell that this was not thesheriff's first go round with this thing.
The next day
the sheriff pops back over with some otherguy in a big black van/truck thing.
(35:57):
Brandon comes out to greet themand the sheriff introduces the other guy.
Brandon doesn't even rememberthe guy's name because his attention is on
the guy's uniform,looks distinctly military.
Brandon's pretty familiar
with most military uniforms, but he's never seen this one.
There are no words writtenanywhere on it, only badges with symbols.
(36:19):
None of them are familiar to Brandon.
He shakes Brandon's hand and says, “You'reBrandon?” Brandon says, “Yeah.”
He says, “Tell me what happened.”So Brandon gives him the quick version
of everything
that's been going on - the cows, the screams, the encounter in the woods.
The man motions over to the van.
Brandon looks over and five more men,in the same type of outfit,
(36:40):
get out of the black
as they
get out, Brandon can see thatthey all have pistols
and they have some type of smallermachine gun hanging around their neck.
These guys are
professionals...government professionals.
So they come outand they start walking over.
The sheriff goes backover and talks to them.
the sheriff comes back over to Brandon,Brandon says, “What's going on here?
(37:04):
What is this?”The sheriff says, “They'll handle it.
They know what to do.” Brandon isthinking, “Who are these people?
What exactly are they going to?
Are they going to go on the huntfor this thing right now?
They're all strapped up
like they're going into World War three,so...maybe.” They all come over to Brandon
and the sheriff has him describe the areawhere he and Gene were in the woods.
(37:27):
As they all startheading out in that direction,
Brandon sees that one of them haswhat looks like a satellite
dish with a smaller satellitedish in the middle.
The wider one is about a footand a half wide.
And the one insidethat one is only about four or five
inches wideand it has a handgrip and a trigger.
So he's looking at this thingand thinking, “What the hell is that,
(37:49):
kind of loudspeaker or something?
What are they going to do?
Whistle for it to The guypulls the trigger
and Brandon's dog, Mya - a
super healthy, well trained one year old, 90 lb.
pit bull - immediately curls up
into a quivering ball,shaking like she's having a seizure.
(38:10):
She's whimpering and crying and screaming.
She can't even get up.
Brandon calls out, “Hey, wait, Whoa, whoa.
What's going on here?
What exactly is that thing doing to my
The guy quickly puts the device away.
And as soon as he does, Maya stands up,stops crying, and doing the seizure thing.
(38:30):
And thoughstill obviously scared and nervous, goes
right over to Brandon and sits rightnext to him.
The only thing Brandon can think ofis that the device has to emit
some kind of sound wave or energy wavethat only dogs can hear.
Brandonsure as hell didn't feel or hear anything.
So Brandon starts yelling, “All right.
(38:50):
What the hell was that? What is that thing?
What exactly are you guys doing?”the main guy says,
“We'll be back in a minute, and then we'll chat.” And with that,
they get back into their truck thingand drive off down the dirt road
toward the woods.
Brandon looks over at the sheriff, shaking his head and wide
eyed like, the hell is going on here, man?
(39:13):
Did you see what this thing didto my dog?” The sheriff,
without saying anythingabout the creature, who these guys are,
or what they're doing, basically just tells Brandon that
he's in good handsand they'll take care of it - and leaves.
Brandon sees the military
looking guys come back about twoand a half to three hours later
when they knock on his door.
(39:33):
He opens it and he asks them, “Sowhat's going on?
What did we figure out,Brandon sees the other
five guys are overnear their van with a couple of bags.
He asks the main guystanding in front of him, “What outfit
you guys with?” The guy at his doorignores his question and says,
“We've got to ask you
a couple questions.” Brandon says, “Okay.”So they run through some things.
(39:55):
Nothing really noteworthy until he asks,
you take any picturesthat day?” Brandon says, “No.
It was like 8:30 or 9:30 at night.
It was dark.”The man asked, you sure?” Brandon
says, “Yes,I am.” And the man says, “Okay.
Got any trail cams?” And Brandon says,“Yeah, probably got about 30 of them out
(40:16):
So the guy starts to ask himif he had any images or physical proof
of this creature.
Now, Brian is not an idiot.
pretty obvious that they're trying to seeif there's any type of proof of anything
because they wanted itin their possession.
But Brandon tells him the truth.
“No.”
So the men start packing up to leave, and the main guy says, “We'll be in touch.
(40:38):
As for right now, you should be all set.”Brandon says, “What does that mean?
All set.
I want to know what it is that's going on.
And I need to know right now.
I'm a little concerned aboutmy well-being, my family's well-being.
And the main guy just says, “We
need to look a little further into thisand we'll be back in touch with you.
(41:01):
But for now, you're all right.
Just sit tight.” Brandon says, “Okay.”He has no idea what that means.
So as they get ready to leave,
Brandon tries to look at the licenseplate on the truck, but he can't see it.
It has some tint thing on it.All he can see
is that it's a New York plate, but he can't make it out.
(41:21):
He wants to know who these guys are
and what it is that is going on.
So a couple of days go by and Brandon seesthat the dog is going back outside again
and that the cows are backup next to the edge of the woods.
So he musters up the courage to go out.
And use the term courage loosely, because before he goes out there,
(41:43):
he loads himself up like Rambo.
It's broad daylight,so he feels a little bit safer.
But how safe can you really feelwhen you find out
that there are more creatures than youoriginally thought were on this planet?
So he goes out therejust to the edge of the wood line
to check on a couple of the trailcams, Pops a couple of them open.
(42:06):
And wouldn't she know it?
The SD cards are gone.
Every one that he checks onthe edge of those woods are missing.
He still has to check the other 20something,
but he's pretty surethat they're gone too.
Coincidence? No way.
There is no way those guys ask himif he has any trail cams and how many.
(42:27):
Then all of the sudden, all the SD cards are gone.
What are the odds?
Obviously, they're checking themto see if they captured anything.
But Brandon would like to know.
He wants to knowexactly what this thing is capable of.
And whoever created this thing, what were they thinking?
This thing is just a damage machine.
(42:51):
It is ready all the time to just go
from 0 to 100 in full attack mode.
He doesn't know a lot about it,but he knows for sure that he's
definitely not going to be going back intothose
woods any time soon.
