(00:16):
Strange mysteries, unexplained phenomena.
And the shadows in between.
This is The InBetween Official Podcastwith your host,
Carol Ann!
That voice in the darkness Help.

(00:36):
sounds human.
But something's not right.
The cadence is off.
The emotion is absent.
Your instincts scream Danger!
Welcome to The InBetween.
I'm Carol Ann, and today we're exploringfour terrifying accounts from people
who came face to face with skinwalkers.

(00:58):
don't.
This soap opera of craziness
comes from Reddit posterHeWhoBuriesTheLight.
So we're going to call him Dylan.
It's 2021 and Dylan and his familylive in a city in southern Colorado.
Dylan is a bit of a horrorand paranormal lover,

(01:19):
and is a sucker for anythinglike skinwalkers or werewolves.
He reads anything he canon the subject, fiction or nonfiction.
But no amount of reading can prepare him
for his encounter with the real thing.
It’s a warm night like any other.
Dylan gets home from his new jobcleaning a call center and relaxes

(01:40):
with some Destiny 2, with friendsin one ear, while he's listening
to a Navajo shaman talk about skinwalkersand their history in the other.
After a few hours, he calls itquits on the game and heads to bed.
About three hours after his headhit the pillow.
He's woken up by a pair of glowing
red eyes just watching him.

(02:04):
He can't move.
He's not sure if this paralysisis some external force,
or if it's some self-preservationmechanism from his own subconscious,
but his body is locked in place
as if it's screaming at him, “Don't moveor you're dead.”
His thoughts immediately go to his family.

(02:24):
His mom, his little brother.
His dad is sick.
If this thing goes after his dad,he doesn't stand a chance.
Dylan can feel his heartpounding in his chest.
Then he hears the growl.
The eyes start moving closer to his bed, still growling and snarling.
And it's pitch black in his roomso all he can see is the eyes.

(02:47):
Those blood red angry eyes that tell him,
“The world as you know it has ended.
What happens now is my choice.”
After what feels like forever,it backs off.
Dylan can move again, but he doesn't.
The thing is still there, staring at him

(03:08):
and growling like it'swaiting for Dylan to make a move,
to give it an excuseto do what it really wants to do.
Dylan never takes his eyesoff of its eyes,
not even to shut themand wish for it to go away.
And he's thinking, this has to be a nightmare.
Any second now, I'm

(03:29):
going to wake up with my bedroom light onand my little brother shaking me awake.
But no such luck.
It isn't a nightmare.
Dylan and the eyes stay lockedin their existential staring contest
for hoursuntil dawn starts to lighten the sky.
As the sunlight startsto overtake the darkness,
the eyes disappear without a trace.

(03:52):
Not taking any chances, he grabshis handgun and does a sweep of the house.
He goes into his parentsfrom and freaks out his mom,
who's wondering why her son is in her roomwith a gun.
His dad must have heard somethinggoing on during the night.
Because his first question is not, “Whyare you in here with a gun,” but,
“What was Dylan doing that sounded like awarped chainsaw?” But his brother saw it.

(04:17):
Now, I'm not sure whether this thingvisited his brother
for a whilebefore coming into Dylan's room,
or if his brother came into Dylan's roomand saw the creature standing there.
But he gives a descriptionthat Dylan remembers to a T.
It looked like some skinny, tall personwith a wolf's head.
The teeth looked like a bunch of knivesand the hands

(04:41):
like a human's with Freddy Krueger claws.
I don't know what the hell that was,but I don't ever want to see it again.
Dad has a fit,
convincedthat Dylan was watching some horror movie
that gave the whole family nightmares, and won't listen to Dylan
trying to tell him that he didn'twatch any movies last night.

(05:04):
A little while later, his mom says, “Let's go for a drive.”
She parked the car at the citypark and asked him,
“What was that thinglast night?” Dylan tells her,
I have no idea, but whatever it was,it wasn't friendly.
After that night. Life goes on.
Now, keep in mindthat at this point in Dylan's life,

(05:25):
there's not a whole lot going on.
His time is spent eitherworking at his call center cleaning job,
or playing video games.
But Dylan notices an undeniablepattern of bad luck emerging.
His relationship with his dad,Which was tenuous at best before.
becomes even more strained
with frequent arguments sometimesto the point of getting physical.

(05:48):
His video gaming skills go to crap, and his boss is on his butt,
accusing him of doing a lousy jobat cleaning the office,
even though the call center employeesconfirm that
Dylan cleansso well, they can eat off the floors.
But the pressure gets so badthat Dylan finally quits.
Not knowing what else to do.

(06:09):
He goesto a shaman on the outskirts of town
and tells him the full storyof what happened.
The shaman says you drew it to youwith your interest in these creatures.
They took an interest in you.
Not because you're throwing outnegative energy, but
you must have some native bloodin your family tree.
And it's still out there watching you.

(06:31):
I don't know if it was an evil spiritor a skinwalker.
But I'll tell you what.
I'll get a priest friend of mineand bless your house ASAP for free.
That'll keep it away as long as you don'tfeed it or attract it anymore.
Two days later, his dad's healthtakes a huge turn for the worse,
and the family has no choicebut to admit him into hospice care.

(06:55):
Three days after that, dad calls and says,I don't have much time left.
So the whole family goes to see himone last time.
They all say their goodbyes, but then he makes Mom and Dylan's brother
leave and has Dylanstay to have one last conversation.
Once they're alone, Dad say, “Isaw it in my window last night.

(07:18):
I'm sorry.
I'm so sorryfor everything I've done to you.
And the hell I put you and your brotherand your mother through.
I'm so sorry.
I thought it was a horror movieyou had blaring that night.
I know you hate me,and you have every right to.
But know this.
It's still outthere. It's waiting for you.

(07:40):
Take care of your mother and your brother.
Keep that thing far away from them.
I know you'll do the right thing.”
Those are the last wordshis dad speaks before he dies
just a few minutes later, with Dylan at his side.
Dylan says aloud, “I'll do my best.
And that thing will never get near them.

(08:03):
As long as I still draw breath.”
And again, life moves on.
Dylan and his mom and brother movefrom that house into an apartment
in the same city, and Dylan gets a bordercollie named Emmy.
But the change in locationis not nearly enough.
Whenever he talks about or eventhinks about that night, he feels watched.

(08:27):
Even Emmie sometimes growls at a closetor the front door at night.
It's out there, just biding its time.
That night is a moment in time that Dylan
will never forgetfor as long as he is on this earth.
But at least now he has a senseof what he might be up against.

(08:47):
And he's waiting for it as well.
And he has this advice for anyonewilling to listen.
Never forget there are forces
in this worldthat we will never understand.
And never say its name anywhere aloud,
because that is like inviting a vampireinto your home.

(09:08):
You don't want to paint a targeton your back, because then they will come.
I The original source of this
story is anonymous,so we'll refer to him as Scott.
Scott has believed in skinwalkersfor most of his life,

(09:30):
and he's confident that he has seenone on two separate occasions.
This is one of them.
He grew up spending a lot of timein southwest Colorado by the Four Corners
and the small town of Cortez, where there are Indian reservations.
And over time, he became awareof the story known by the locals
about this place called Skinwalker Lane, which is this old dirt road

(09:54):
just outside the reservationthat leads to an abandoned cabin.
The cabin is decades old
and is said to have been builton Indian burial grounds.
As the story goes,a white family lived there
and mysteriously all disappeared.
Being dumb teenagers,
Scott and his cousinsdon't believe the story.

(10:16):
They think it's just a hoax.
So being the tough guys that they thinkthey are, they decide to go check it out.
So one night, they all pile into an old Jeep SUV
and drive all the way outto Skinwalker Lane at about 11:00 at night
when it's pitch black.
They turn onto the road,
which is lined on both sideswith willow trees, but in the distance

(10:39):
they can see the moonlight highlightingSleeping Mountain in the distance.
The boys’ excited, talkative vibe in the jeep
falls to whisper quietas they slowly ease down the road.
Scott doesn't know if this is a figmentof their collective imaginations,
but a strange feelingseems to invade their space.

(11:01):
They see deer in groups of 2 or 3,keep poking their heads out
from around the willows, just staring at them.
Needless to say, it seems pretty weird
since deer are usually a lot more jumpy.
But they keep going.
Once they get about a mileand a half down the road,
they finally get to a clearingwhich opens up to a big field.

(11:25):
On the other side of the fieldis the old cabin.
At this point they are creeped out,
but since none of them is ready to give uptheir man card yet, they keep driving
down the road across the fielduntil they're about 150ft from the cabin.
The cabin is really dark, with rotting wood and weird carvings

(11:46):
all over it that look like tribal symbolsof some kind.
Since nobody wants to actuallyget out of the car
to get any closer, they decide, okay, we're here.
Let's just watch it for a whileand see if anything happens.
The anticipation is palpable.
When out of nowhere comes this shrill,

(12:08):
skin peeling howl that goes on forever.
By the time it ends, it changesand sounds more like a man screaming.
They see something run behind the cabin.
Something on two feet disappearsbehind it on the left side.
The boys' eyesall train on the right side,
to hopefully get a better ideaof what it is when it comes back out.

(12:32):
But out from behind the cabin's rightside comes this huge coyote.
More like the size of a wolf.
The coyote clears the cabin, stops
and just stares at the jeep, eyes
glowing a deep blood red.
The boys freak out and chaos
erupts inside the jeep with screamsof, “Let's go, let's go!

(12:55):
Let's get out of here,” as they fumbleto get it started, get turned around
and get moving away from that cabinas fast as they can.
After that night,Scott says he will never doubt
the existence of Skinwalkers again.
They exist.

(13:16):
I This
story comesfrom a guy we are going to call Travis.
When Travis was only 21, he went outon a camping trip with a few buddies.
Every year, this group of friends makes this trip
in honor of a friend of theirswho they have called Jeremy,
who passed awayjust a couple of years earlier.
They used to make the trip every yearbefore Jeremy passed away,

(13:38):
but now that Jeremy's gone, it'smore like a remembrance trip.
They still have a good time, butyou can bet that Jeremy's name is honored
in more than a few toasts to his memoryin front of their late night fire.
This particular year, Traviswakes up early one morning,
well before his buddies quietlygets up, climbs out of the tent,

(14:00):
and decides to take a nice, quiet morningwalk around the area,
just soaking in the beautythat surrounds him.
He walks for about five minutes, listening to the birds
chirping and the breeze through the trees.
Other than his buddies back at camp,
Travis is miles awayfrom even the closest human beings.

(14:21):
But the serenity suddenly shifts
and the air around himstarts to feel heavy.
The sound of the birds around himgoes quiet.
Everything goes quiet.
A strange sense of dread overcomes
Travis, and he feels this urge to turn around.
He does. And he wishes he didn't.

(14:42):
Standing in front of him, maybe 20ft away, is Jeremy.
Or at least it's Jeremy's face.
But it's Jeremy's face on this weirdcrooked body.
Jeremyjust stands there, waving at Travis.
The gears in Travis's head start spinning
as his heart starts pounding in his chest.

(15:05):
He knows this is not Jeremy.
Jeremy is dead.
But there he is,standing right in front of him.
He feels a wave of joywash over him at seeing his friend again.
But another part of his brainwon't let him move.
Travis takes a closer look.
Jeremy's jaw is slack, and his eyes are kind of glazed over,

(15:28):
like there'sa thin layer of film over them.
His expression never changes.
His arms and legs are all ripped upand bloody.
Travis takes off running, sprints
back to the tent, and wakeseveryone up as fast as he can.
They know the stories of skinwalkers, and once they hear what Travis saw,

(15:48):
they waste no time in packing upand getting out of Dodge.
Now, some people might think thatthis was just
Jeremy's spirit coming to hang outwith his old camping buddies
one last time, but Travis says no way.
He says whatever that thing was,it was evil.
He believes whatever it is, it'sbeen there a long time

(16:12):
and that it had seenthe boys on this trip in prior years.
That's how it knew to take Jeremy's face.
The boys just head home, cutting their trip
short before iteven really got a chance to get started.
But the way Travis looks at it,he misses Jeremy.
But he has no desire to see himany sooner than he has to.

(16:40):
I This little episode of creepiness,
which happened just three monthsago, comes from Reddit user JiveOfTurkey.
So we're going to call him Jake.
Jake has hunted and hiked in the woodssince he was nine years old.
He's very familiar with the wildlifeand the sounds of the forest.
He wasn't a believer in really anything

(17:02):
out of the ordinaryuntil this particular night.
However,he may just be changing his tune a bit
because even he has no explanationfor what happened that night.
Jake was going for a little eveningdeer hunt.
He hiked about a mile and a halfthrough the forest and swamp till he gets
to his destination of an area of woodswith a little field clearing.

(17:25):
He finds a good hunting treeand climbs on up.
It's a totally uneventful afternoonand evening until sundown,
when, from the woods in front of himcomes a scream
like the scream that rabbits makewhen they're in trouble or being attacked.
The shrieking goes onfor over a half an hour,

(17:46):
and he's thinking, how is this rabbit not dead yet?
Naturally, listening to that torturoussound for so long
has him on edge, but he figures the hawk, or whatever
got it, is just taking its goodold sweet time with dinner.
Then he hears the sound of a twig snap.

(18:07):
Everything stops.
The rabbit stops.
Jake scans the treeline, trying to see
what could be in thereto make everything go so quiet.
He can see something standing there, kind of deer shaped,
moving through the woods about 100ft away.
He brings up his bow, but the undergrowth
is too thick for himto see clearly enough to shoot at it.

(18:30):
It walks behind a tree and disappears.
By now the sun has fully set.
He's got about 15 minutes of post sundownlight left
when from the tree linehe hears in a flat, emotionless,
childlike voice coming from that same areawhere the deer had disappeared.

(18:50):
Help.
Help.
Help.
But something's not right.
The words are completely monotone, not like somebody
really calling out for help.
Sounds more like someone'sreading a dictionary. Marie.
Help.
Help.
Help.

(19:11):
Jake hears this call for helpprobably 15 times.
And then the woods go silent.
Not even a breeze in the trees.
The crack of a tree branch snapping cuts
the silence, and chaoserupts in the woods.
Squirrels, birds and deer suddenly shootout of the tree line at full throttle,

(19:34):
sounding like an absolutestampede through the forest.
Then silence falls again.
This is when Jake decides it's time to go.
Unfortunately for him, he lost his lightthat he clips on his hat on the hike in.
But whatever.
He just books it as fast as he can.

(19:55):
A mile and a half through the woods
with only moonlightto light the way back to his truck.
That's okay with Jake.
He'd rather go running through the darkwoods like all the other animals just did,
then riskbecoming the next screaming rabbit.
You know, hearing stories
like these kind of make me gladI live in the Midwest,
