(00:16):
Strange mysteries, unexplained phenomena.
And the shadows in between.
This is The InBetween Official Podcastwith your host,
Carol Ann!
“You know what the difference is
between you and me?

(00:37):
I make this look good.” Men In Black.
One of my favorite movies of all time.
But many people forgetthat the inspiration behind the laughs
is a long history of horrifying encountersgoing back hundreds
and maybe even thousands of years, and then all over the world.

(00:57):
Welcome to The InBetween, where we tellstories of the strange and mysterious.
And today we're going to lookat just a brief sampling
of the crazy Men in Black phenomena.
On the evening of September
4th, 1665,the villagers of Great Massingham

(01:22):
in England were going about their businesswhen they noticed lights
dancing in the sky.
Dozens of peoplegathered to look at the lights,
swooping around and darting here and thereover the countryside for over an hour.
Now, some people have theorizedthat what the villagers actually saw
was just a series of shooting stars,or even light

(01:44):
from the Great Fire of London, which was raging 100 miles south,
reflecting off ice crystalswithin serious cloud formations.
The following
day, however, three strangersappeared in the village.
Their very pale skin, which, considering
England is known for its constantrain and short summers.

(02:05):
Maybe that's not that odd,but the also dressed in black clothing
from head to toe.
The three strangers make for the lonecoach in and start asking questions
about what the villagershad seen in the sky the night before.
500 years ago, Massinghambarely had 200 people living there,
so it was pretty secludedand not particularly welcoming

(02:29):
to strangers, marching in and aggressivelyquestioning their citizens.
Before long, a local man, Kyle Brookshire.
He's had enough.
He slams downhis drink, walked over to the strangers
and let them know they are not welcome.
The strangers, showingno emotion, turned to leave and Berkshire

(02:51):
follows them outsideand is in the middle of blustering
about what will happen to themif they return.
What do you do to the ground, struck
down by some invisible force that he says
felt like the inside of his headwas filling up with water.
Is everybody rushes outsideto see what's going on.

(03:12):
One of the three strangers speaks.
Speak no more.
What you witnessed in the skyyesterday evening.
And with that they walked out of towntoward the woods.
The villagers quickly mobilized everyavailable man and went into the woods.
After the three strangersthought it was pointless.
The three men had vanished.

(03:40):
In the 1960s.
Somebody actually manages to capture rare
photographic evidence of a man in black.
Timothy Green Beckley was a New Yorkbased writer and ufologist
who wrote well over a hundred books onUFOs.
Men in black, and other unexplained phenomena.

(04:01):
In 1968, Beckley's friend
and fellow ufologist JimMosley calls to say that he and his wife
have been getting these strange phonecalls, sudden dizzy spells,
and are being followed around townby people dressed entirely in black.
Well, soon after that phone call,Mosley calls again,

(04:22):
completely freaked out, telling Beckleythat someone has broken into his house
and rifled through all of his UFOpaperwork.
Buckley hatches a plan.
Mosley walks around town until he senses
he's being tailed, then returns home.
But at the lastsecond ducked into his car to hide.
Beckley is already hiding in the car,and the two don't

(04:45):
have to wait longbefore they see the Man in Black.
Walk down the sidewalk and duck intoa doorway across from the Mosley's house.
Both men know this is it.
Mosley starts the car and Beckley grabshis camera and at 20 miles an hour,
leans out the backseat window and snapsa picture of the man dressed in black.

(05:06):
By the time they find a placeto pull over again and sprint back
toward the doorway where the man in Blackhad been standing, the man have gone.
TimothyBeckley died in 2021 at the age of 73
and went to his grave, believing that he had captured
one of the veryfew images of a man in black.

(05:34):
A Japanese UFO blogger.
We're going to call him Kenji releasessome really clear photos of a UFO
sighting on his website, and is amazingly, almost immediately bombarded
by the economist commentsdemanding that he take the photos down.
The posters seem to come under differentscreen names and different IP addresses.

(05:55):
Every time.
Kenji refuses to take down the pictures, and he knows that the threats of lawsuits
are just blocked.
But he begins to receive even more,
to the point where he hasto close the comment section down.
But he thinks that at leastthat'll be the end of it.
But things just get worse, and one night,

(06:15):
Kenji decides to take a walkdown to the local bar for a quick drink.
Now, this bar usually catersto businessmen
and college students, but on this particular evening,
a rather odd group comes inand sit at the table next to Kenji.
Now they're taller than your averageJapanese man with long, lanky limbs,

(06:36):
and they're wearing black suits, which just kind of hang off
their thin frame between the bad suitsand their crooked ties.
They're just kind of sloppyand kind of messy.
And when they sit downand you can see that they are all
super paleand don't look entirely Japanese,
it's sort of a mix, maybe between Japanese and Middle Eastern.

(06:59):
All of them have smooth skin
that is almost translucent to the pointwhere it makes them look kind of sick.
The group sits down, ordersdrinks, and Kenji can hear that
they speak Japanesewith some kind of accent
amongst themselves, but mostly they just sit there
looking really ragged and rundownand exhausted.

(07:22):
Kenji cannot keep himselffrom looking over Mr.
Song, and their movementsare really bizarre, jerky like insects.
The group ordered their drinks, but they don't drink them.
They just sit in total silence.
One of them standsup, dips a finger into his drink,

(07:45):
pulls it out and stares at it.
Another takes a sip, but wrinkles his face
at the tasteand doesn't take another drink.
One of them fumbleswith what looks like a smartphone,
but it looks like he doesn't know how towork it, so he just drops it on the table.
By now, Kenji notices that
the people in the barare weirded out by their behavior as well.

(08:08):
Kenji is feeling more and more uneasyand is just about to leave
when the one sitting closest to himturns to him and says, hey, today!
On considering that it's summer,it was actually a pretty hot day.
Kenji just nods and goes along with them, but again,
with that strange unidentifiable accent,

(08:28):
the stranger asks him, what do you do?
Kenji says, I'm a blogger.
And the stranger asks, what kind of blog?
And for better or worse, can you tell themand explain phenomena and UFOs?
The stranger repliesprobably not a lot of money in that.
Kenji ignores themand asks what they do in.

(08:49):
The man says we're just here on business.
During the whole exchange, the other two
look on with blank expressionson their faces.
Not drinking.
Not doing much of anything except staring
and occasionally fidgetingwith their unused chopsticks.
In their weird, insect like way.

(09:10):
Kenji again makes a move to leave,
but feels an inexplicable sense of dread
from this group of odd strangers.
He's not really sure why.
They don't look threatening or anything.
It's just a feeling that is continually
creeping up on himas Kenji finally gets up to leave.

(09:32):
The man says, you're leaving?
Come on, stay for a while.
I'll buy you a drink.
Do you don't want to go homeand write more of that UFO stuff?
The whole table lets out this
unnatural, disturbing chuckle.
Like laughing was something that they'donly read about in a book, Kenji says.

(09:52):
They really did not want him to leave, and they repeated that
they'll all chat for a whilenow, buy him some drinks
in the main guy again, jokes.
You can only goingto write about UFOs at home anyway,
so you might all stay with thatand unwind.
They all laugh.
That stilted laugh.
Like they really don't understand Stan.

(10:17):
What a laugh is.
It also sounded to Kenji like a threat.
Kenji decidesI am done, gets up and leaves the bar
hoping never see the businessman again.

(10:40):
September 11th,
1976 Doctor Herbert Hopkins
a doctor and a UFO researcher in Old
Orchard Beach, Maine, is home alone
with only a man, identifies himself
as a representativeof a new Jersey UFO organization
that doesn't exist, and asks to come overand talk about a case.

(11:03):
Herbert invites him over.
Keep in mind this is 1976, sothere are no cell phones, only landlines.
The minute Herbert hangs up the phone, the man is already on
his doorstep, shocked at how quicklythe guy got there.
Doctor Hopkins opens the doorand is struck
by the appearance of the visitorin front of him.

(11:26):
This person wearing a black suit,
is incredibly pale, with light red lips,
wrinkle free skin, and doesn'tlook like a real human being at all.
More like a mannequin.
No eyebrows, no eyelids, and no hair on his head or anywhere else.

(11:48):
The visitor comes inside, sits down andstarts talking as Herbert is listening.
He can't help but noticethat not only does
the visitor's bodynot move while he talks,
but his lips and his speech
are not synched like a ventriloquist dummy
with no intonation,no emotion or inflection.

(12:13):
The visitor perfectly still and tellsDoctor Hopkins that he needs
to stop his UFO research immediately,or else bad things will happen.
He takes his suede gloveand wipes it over his bright red lips,
and Herbertcan see the red smear on the glove.
And with the lipstick gone.

(12:34):
The visitor has no lips, just a straight, thin line of a mouth.
Herbert's opinion as a doctor is that
this is not a human being at all,but it also isn't a hologram.
It's not a projection,and it's not his imagination.
It's real.
But what is it?
A robot?

(12:55):
An extraterrestrial disguised as human.
He has no idea. But it gets weirder.
The visitor says to Herbert, you have two coins in your pocket.
Which was true. Take one out, please.
So Herbert pulls out a penny, and he holds it in the palm of his hand.
The visitor says, watchthe coin as Herbert is watching.

(13:18):
The penny goes from a copper colorto silver, and then it becomes bluish.
It starts getting fuzzy and out of focus.
It blurs and blurs, and then a simple vanishes.
This is when Doctor Hopkins realizes thatwhatever it is he's dealing with,
it has powers way out of his league,

(13:40):
and that just maybe,he should do as he's told.
The visitor tells Herbertto destroy all of his research
on all of his UFO cases, and then
slowing down like he's kind of runninglow on batteries or something.
He says, my energy is running low.

(14:00):
I must go now. Goodbye.
He slowlyand robotically goes out the front door,
down the stairs to the street, down the street,
to the nearest street corner, where he disappears in a streak of light.
When I started
working on this episode,I was really shocked

(14:21):
