Getting Gynecological with Evelyn

Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner and Certified Nurse-Midwife Evelyn joins the cast to discuss David Cronenberg’s unhinged gynecological thriller Dead Ringers (1988). We discuss her unusual career path, the dangers of sociopaths in medicine, and the mysteries of the female bathing suit area. 

 

 

Dead Ringers (1988), directed by David Cronenberg, follows identical twin gynecologists Beverly and Elliot Mantle (both portrayed by Jeremy Irons). The twins share everything—including their medical practice and romantic partners. Confident Elliot seduces women, then passes them off to the introverted Beverly. Their lives spiral when Beverly becomes emotionally involved with a patient, Claire, and begins abusing drugs. As their identities blur and mental health deteriorates, the twins descend into a disturbing psychological and emotional breakdown. The film explores themes of identity, codependency, and madness, culminating in a haunting and tragic finale that blurs the line between self and other.
