Life Lessons from a Credit Card Call: Persistence, Clarity, and the Will to Fight for What You Want

In this spontaneous and insightful episode of The KAYA Podcast, Kambria Davis shares a personal story recorded from her car, inspired by a frustrating call to her credit card company. Kambria dives into the metaphorical lessons drawn from her experience of navigating automated systems and relentless redirections, paralleling it with life's challenges and the importance of persistence. As she wrestles with the automated responses and finally gets to a human representative, Kambria reflects on how this mirrors our journey through life's obstacles and the need to stay clear on our goals despite distractions and setbacks. Under the influence of a Pisces full moon and the onset of eclipse season, Kambria emphasizes the significance of knowing what we want and having the courage to pursue it, even when the path seems convoluted.

(00:05):
Hey y'all!
Welcome back to the Kaia Podcast.
I am recording this one from my carbecause, you know, life sometimes, okay?
But I was very inspired by my call tothe credit card company this morning
to do a little podcast episode.

(00:27):
It's been a while.
And I figured, you know, if I justrecord in my car when I'm driving,
it's not going to be super profeshed.
The sound quality when you're driving orlistening probably not be the best, but
the content is going to be fire, okay?
So, this morning I had to callthe bank, the credit card company.

(00:49):
Because I've been gettingemails and a text that was like,
you have to make a payment.
And I've already paid,uh, my monthly payment.
But so anyway, right.
I'm getting hounded by them.
Very confused.
So I make a phone call in.
So this episode, this little chat, thislittle processing, my experience, it's

(01:13):
not about the fact that I had to callin and yes, got all that sorted out.
Apparently they were adding a 1.
99 fee to still have paper statements.
that I did not know about.
So 1.
99, 1.
99 was short and then theywere considering it late.
So there's that.
But when I called it, okay, I havenever, we all know that calling into

(01:38):
these places, the run around to try toget a person on the phone is ridiculous.
However, This company had this masteredand I had a call back twice because
once I finally got to somebody thefirst time, as I feel is like pretty
par for the course, I'm chatting withher and mid sentence she just stops

(02:02):
talking or I lose the contact, we losethe connection, then I wait and I wait.
Four minutes I wait and she nevercomes back and then the call at
eight minutes eventually hangsand I'm just like whatever.
So I had to go through this highlypainful process two times, but

(02:27):
while I was going through it, thislike metaphor for life just hit me.
Um, and also I'm recording thisunder a Pisces full moon and the
beginning of eclipse season, apartial lunar eclipse tonight.
So, Par for the course, but I mean, their recording is already there.
So it's just interesting, right?
Themes of letting go, themesof just life and our cycles

(02:51):
and our cycles and our cycles.
And also this thing of like, lookingat this, when I call in, it's like,
you know, here's the options, here'syour balance, blah, blah, blah.
And then they say, whatwould you like to do?
You can say things like, blah.
And I say, talk to a person.
And then she comes back on and says, Okay.
I see that you wouldlike to talk to a person.

(03:11):
I'm wondering if you want to talkto a person about your balance.
That I say, no.
And they say, okay, well I'm wondering ifyou want to talk to a person about this.
And I say no.
And they say, okay, we have anonline system if you'd like.
And I say talk to a person when they saywell, or they don't say, well, they say,

(03:33):
okay, I see you want to talk to a person.
The, and then they say, You But our onlinesystem can help you at a much faster pace.
And I just was like, it was so weird tofeel totally Manipulated by a recording
to call into a credit card companybecause she was validating that I wanted

(03:58):
to talk to a person and then she wasredirecting me and I just kept thinking
about thinking about life, right?
And it's like one how easily We,you know, we know what we want.
We see the life.
We see the goals.
We have the desires and then peopleor outside influences or our past

(04:22):
traumas or just life, the busynessof life, the demands of life, and we
totally get squirreled away, right?
Because this woman on the phone that'sa pre recording was finally like,
Well, you can wait for a person, butit's going to take some time, right?
Like this, I've never triedso hard to talk to a human and

(04:45):
been so gaslit and steered away.
And, but the way that itwas, I don't know, it was so
different than most of them.
It wasn't like, Oh, I don'tunderstand what you're saying.
Like, it was like, she knewexactly what I was saying.
And that company was going to do itsdamnedest to not have me talk to a person.

(05:06):
And being a Leo, of course, thewill of the Leo is like, Nope, my
eyes are set on talking to a person.
I will figure this out.
But then I had to gothrough that process twice.
And I literally thought about howoften we have to go through these hard
processes, or we have to literallyknow so clearly what we want.

(05:27):
And the challenge becomes diggingin and sticking to the life we
want, the partnerships we want, the kind of work that we want.
Lifestyle and money and jobs andtime that we want because there is
so much to throw at us for a minute.
And at some point, right, there wasa thought for us like, okay, well, I

(05:49):
could just, I was like, well, shouldI just pay the balance through here?
But I was like, no, I'm not goingto pay a late fee over something
that I wasn't told about over 1.
99, which I didn't even know that that'swhat it was until they got on the phone.
And then I had a call back a second time.
And it was four things of saying,no, I want to talk to a person.

(06:11):
Do you want to pay off your balance?
No.
Do you want to use our online system?
No.
Do you have a questionregarding your something?
I'm like, no.
They're like, okay, I know youwant to talk to a person, but
oftentimes there's a long wait.
And let me just tell you thelong wait was like 30 seconds.
As soon as I worked my ass off to getto that point on the phone call, then.

(06:37):
It rang and somebody immediately picked upand I asked the second person I was like,
hey Do you guys have a way to call me backin case the call gets interrupted again?
And she said no, this is onlyan inbound call center and then
it made perfect sense, right?
This company does not want to be payingpeople to get on the phone and answer

(06:57):
the phone and answer any questionsSo they're doing their damnedest.
And yeah, I just thought about Youknow, how, how does that feel in life?
You know, right now Pisces full moon, Ifeel like I am just like being slammed
against the waves, crash against waves.
And we all go through it full moonor not believe in astrology or not.

(07:18):
I think we all go through timeswhere we feel like we're just
slammed up against a wave, right?
Crashing, crashing.
And then we come up for air andwe're like, okay, I'm finally going
to get to talk to a person, right?
Or I'm finally going to get that job.
Or I'm finally goingto break this pattern.
And then boom, right?
Are you sure?
Are you sure?

(07:38):
Can I help you with this?
Why don't you try this route?
Why don't you try this route?
So I just think that there's somethingreally important about getting very clear
because when we know what we want, when weknow the life we want, the space and time
and the way we want to spend our energy,I'm not saying that we don't falter.

(08:00):
I falter myself all the time.
But I think what becomes really easyis when we got thrown into the crashing
waves, or when we get thrown into aphone call that's a automated, generated
response, it's easy to get swayed, right?
It's easy to give up.
It's easy to just take, fine,I'll just pay the online fee

(08:21):
and sort of deal with this.
But ultimately, once I finally got to thelady and our call did not get interrupted,
she reversed my fees, she explained the 1.
99, and in the end, You know, shefixed the problem with me in less
than a minute, but it took me probablyfive minutes to even get there.
So I don't know why I was just like,I gotta do a podcast about this.

(08:46):
This is so, and also bravo to thatcompany because I've been in sales a
long time and I know how to like haveconversations, negotiate different things.
And they even almost had me beinglike, yeah, I guess I'll just pay it.
You know, there's a long way.
The truth of the matter is they werenot, they were not being truthful.

(09:06):
They were not truthful.
There was no long wait.
It would have taken me longer to hangup the phone, pull out my laptop,
log in online than it would haveto be able to sit on the phone.
And I think that that's another thing.
We think that once, you know, wethink that things might be harder
than they're going to be, or we think,oh, this is the easy way out, right?

(09:27):
This feels easier.
This feels simpler.
And maybe it will be.
Maybe sometimes something is easier, but is it what you really really want?
Is it what you really desire?
Everything in life, in myopinion, is a choice, right?
There's the stuff that happens tous, but I think when we're really

(09:50):
clear, we get to make choices.
We have a lot more control of our livesand our destinies than we realize.
And if we want to make a choice, we can.
If we, you know, want to havea different life, if we want to
have a different job, we can.
We just have to make it through like thefour recordings that are trying to sway

(10:14):
us and push us in a different direction.
So that's my littletidbit for today, y'all.
Um,
don't get swayed or do, but at leastknow that you're getting swayed, you
know, have the clarity, know what youwant, know what you need, and have the
audacity to go after it and get it.
