On a December morning in 1831, a modest ship prepared to leave the harbor of Plymouth, England. It was the HMS Beagle, bound on a surveying mission that would take it across the globe. Among its passengers was a 22-year-old naturalist, shy and somewhat uncertain about his future. His name was Charles Darwin. He could not have known it then, but the observations he would make during this voyage would alter humanity’s understanding of life itself.
