Isaac (00:31):
Hello everyone, and welcome
to the Newlyweebs Handbook, the show
where we guide newcomers throughthe world of anime, manga, and
all things Japanese pop culture.
I'm the former Newlyweeb Isaac, and
Hunter (00:39):
And I'm Hunter,
the geriatric genre genie.
Isaac (00:41):
So Hunter, have you ever
wanted to watch something, but
just not known what to watch?
Hunter (00:45):
All the time, man.
It's so hard for me to find a showthat I'm in the mood for when I'm just
scrolling through Crunchyroll or Netflix.
If only there was an easy way to sortthrough the thousands of shows and
find one I'm in the mood to watch.
Isaac (00:54):
Well, good news.
Today we're going to give anoverview of the demographics
and genres in anime and manga.
Hunter (00:59):

Go for launch.
Hunter (01:23):
Good luck and
godspeed, Newlyweebs.
Mission Genre Genesisis launching in T minus.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
Isaac (02:05):
So before we dive headfirst
into the different genres you may
encounter, we need to discuss thedifferent demographics of anime
and manga.
Hunter (02:11):
There are five main demographics.
To begin with, we have Kodomomuke, whichtranslates to Intended for Children.
These series are made for both boys andgirls who are younger than 12 years old.
They tend to have some sort of educationalmessage or theme, but there are some
that are made for pure entertainment.
Most of the time, adults in theseseries play little to no role in the
story, allowing the plot to focusmainly on the young protagonist.
Some series in this demographicthat you may already be familiar
(02:33):
with are Pokemon, Digimon, Beyblade,Cardcaptor Sakura, and Hamtaro.
Next we have Shounen, which roughlytranslates to Boy or Young Boy.
These series are made for younger boyswho are between 12 and 18 years old.
They usually follow a maleprotagonist who is around the
same age as the intended viewer.
They tend to focus on intenseaction and battle scenes with
themes of friendship and Comradery.
(02:53):
Some series in this demographic includeDragon Ball, Naruto, Bleach, and One
Piece.
Isaac (02:58):
Now, closely related to
shounen, we have shoujo, which roughly
translates to girl or young girl.
Shoujo is made for younger girls whoare between the ages of 12 and 18.
Shoujo is the female equivalent ofshounen, and thus focuses on things
that are traditionally consideredmore feminine, like romance and drama.
These series typically follow a femaleprotagonist around the same age as
the intended viewers, but it isn'tunusual to see a male protagonist.
(03:22):
Some series in this demographicinclude Fruits Basket, Ouran High
School Host Club, and Sailor Moon.
Hunter (03:27):
So, what if you've
aged out of those demographics?
Well, we won't judge you ifyou continue to watch anything
that fits in those categories.
I mean, I know I still do.
But you may want something thatinvolves some more mature themes.
Isaac (03:37):
Well, good news.
There are two more major demographicstailored especially for you.
The first of these is Seinen, whichroughly translates to youth or young man.
Seinen is made for men who are 18or older and deals with more mature
themes than Shonen normally handles.
Seinen generally follows a maleprotagonist who is 18 or older, and
can involve things like sex, drugs, psychological issues, or violence that is
(04:00):
much more brutal than shounen violence.
Not all Seinen includes thesethemes, however, as there
are Seinen comedy series.
Some series in this demographicinclude Akira, Berserk,
Vinland Saga, and Oshi no Ko.
Hunter (04:12):
On the other hand, we have
Josei, which roughly translates to woman.
Josei is made for women who are 18or older, and deals with more mature
themes than Shoujo normally handles.
Josei generally follows a femaleProtagonist who is 18 or older,
or a gay male protagonist.
These series can involve things likesex cheating and sexual assault.
They also show more realisticdepictions of relationships when
compared to their Shoujo counterparts.
Some series in this demographicinclude Yuri on Ice, Usagi Drop.
(04:35):
And Nana.
Now that you have an understandingof the demographics of Anime and
Manga, we can move on to the manydifferent genres you may encounter.
A lot of the examples that we'regoing to provide can fit into various
genres, but we've organized thembased on what we perceive as their
defining characteristics, regardlessof any other genres they may fit into.
Isaac (04:51):
The first genre we'll
be covering today is action.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre are filled with lots of fight
scenes and action, hence the name.
If you watch or read something in thisgenre, you're likely to encounter high
stakes battles and intense momentsthat involve characters overcoming
the odds of some desperate situation.
Some action series include Demon Slayer,Attack on Titan, Jujutsu Kaisen, Akame
(05:13):
ga Kill, Chainsaw Man, and Kill la Kill.
Closely related to action is adventure.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre are more often than not longer
running series due to the fact thatadventures are usually something that
happens over a long period of time.
Adventure series involve characterswho gain and lose a lot both at the
beginning and end of their journey.
Adventures can be both internal andexternal conflicts, as characters
(05:36):
can go through physical challengeslike training and battles, or
internal challenges like questioningthemselves or dealing with death.
Character development in adventures isjust as important as the journey itself.
Some adventure series include FullmetalAlchemist Brotherhood, Hunter Hunter,
also known as Hunter x Hunter, Dr.
Stone, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, along with most Studio Ghibli
(05:59):
movies like Spirited Away, PrincessMononoke, and Howl's Moving Castle.
If space is more your speed, thensci fi might be the genre for you.
Anime and manga that fit intothis genre focus on the future
and the relationship betweenfuturistic technologies and humans.
Some common technologies seenin sci fi include AI, spacecraft
that are able to travel multiplelight years, and teleportation.
(06:22):
Sci fi is generally dystopian, but thereare some that break away from this trend.
Some sci fi series includeCowboy Bebop, Steins Gate, Space
Battleship Yamato, Ghost in theShell, Astro Boy, and Space Dandy.
Now, for one of my favorite genres, Mecha.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre focus on robots that are typically
gigantic and piloted by humans, thoughthere are some notable exceptions.
(06:47):
Sometimes Mecha focuses more on therobot side of things and shows the
cool things that the robots are doing.
Other times, however, Mecha willfocus more on the human side of
things and show how these robotsare affecting people's lives.
Some Mecha series include NeonGenesis Evangelion, Mobile Suit
Gundam, Gurren Lagann, DarlingIn the Franxx, Transformers, Code
(07:07):
Geass, Macross, and Full Metal Panic.
Hunter (07:10):
If you want to be scared or
feel chills down your spine, then
Supernatural and Horror is for you.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre are designed to creep you out,
scare you, or just make you feel likethere's some other power in the world.
These series include things likeghosts, demons, or anything Fits into
the uncanny valley to make you feeluncomfortable, really uncomfortable.
Some series.
Focus on the horror aspect to tryto up the creep factor and scare the
(07:32):
pants off of you while other seriesfocus more on the supernatural and use
it to create a more compelling story.
Some supernatural and horror seriesinclude Dark Gathering, Devilman
Crybaby, Another, and Anything byJunji Ito like Uzamaki, Tome, and Gyo.
Isaac (07:46):
Would you like to have
an existential crisis while
watching or reading something?
Hunter (07:49):
I know I would!
Isaac (07:50):
Well, psychological
thrillers have you covered.
These series make you questionyour own thoughts and beliefs
as well as the world around you.
Because of this, these series sometimesrequire more focused viewing or reading
to completely understand what's going on.
Some psychological thrillersinclude Serial Experiments Lain,
Ergo Proxy, and Psycho Pass.
(08:10):
Now, if you want to put on yourthinking caps and figure out a thing,
then you should check out Mysteries.
These series focus on suspenseand intellectual thinking.
Some series will focus on onebig mystery that's solved over
the course of the entire story.
While others will involve muchsmaller mysteries that are solved
over the course of a few episodes.
(08:31):
The audience and mysteries alsoplay a unique role as sometimes
the audience knows exactly what'sgoing on while the characters don't.
Other times the audience is taskedwith solving the mystery while the
characters are also figuring it out.
Some mystery series include Erased, Oshino Ko, Death Note, and Made in Abyss.
So now I want you to imagine a fantasticalworld full of dragons, elves, and
(08:54):
magic.
Hunter (08:54):
Something like Lord of the
Rings or Harry Potter, but animated.
Isaac (08:58):
If this sounds appealing to you,
then you should give fantasy series a try.
Anime and manga that fit intothis genre involve fantastical
experiences and events.
They also include many fantasyraces that you may be familiar with,
including orcs, elves, and dwarves,as well as fantasy creatures like
dragons, griffins, and trolls.
Magic is more often than not prevalentin these worlds, though the rules and
(09:21):
cost of magic vary from series to series.
Some fantasy series includeFairytale, Seven Deadly Sins,
Ancient Magus Bride, Magi, Mashle:
Magic and Muscles, and Black Clover. (09:27):
undefined
Hunter (09:33):
Have you ever wondered
what happens when you die?
Well, our next genre, Isekai, seeks to answer that question.
Anime and manga that fit intothis genre involve one or more
characters traveling to anotherworld through some mysterious means.
The most common way happens to bethrough death and reincarnation,
but some isekai use another methodlike portals between worlds.
In English we call this concept a portalfantasy, and some well known examples
(09:55):
are Narnia and Alice in Wonderland.
Isekai more often than not fitinto the fantasy genre, but
not all fantasy are isekai.
Some series include Re-Zero, MushokuTensei, Sword Art Online, Inuyasha, and
That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.
Are you in the mood for a laugh?
Then check out comedy!
Anime and manga that fit into this genrewant to make you laugh, and will do so
using a variety of different methods.
(10:16):
Some series could focus on being asatire of a specific concept or idea,
while others could focus on more unusualbut hilarious events and visual gags.
Some comedy series include Bocchithe Rock!, Pop Team Epic, One Punch
Man, Spy Family, also known as SpyX Family, Azumanga Daioh, Nichijou
(My Ordinary Life), and Gintama.
(10:36):
Do you like sportsball, or wantto learn more about sportsball?
Never fear, sportsball is here!
Isaac (10:42):
Yay!
Hunter (10:43):
Anime and manga that fit
into the sports genre focus on
sports teams trying their best.
This could be something likea whole team trying to win a
championship, or an individual tryingto be the best in their country.
These series, of course, have alarge focus on teamwork and the
friendships that go along with it.
Some sports series include Eyeshield 21,Bluelock, Haikyuu, Kokoro's Basketball,
Hajime no Ippo, and Ace of Diamond.
(11:05):
And now for the bestthing since sliced bread.
Slice of Life!
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre feature stories that show the
characters ordinary lives, everydayexperiences, and the challenges they face.
Occasionally, these series includefantastical elements that show how
ordinary people deal with these elements.
Some Slice of Life series includeKomi Can't Communicate, K On!, My
Dressup Darling, Insomniacs AfterSchool, Fruits Basket, and Ms.
(11:27):
Kobayashi's Dragon Maid.
Isaac (11:30):
Are
you all about sparkles, cooltransitions, and all things kawaii?
Then check out Mahou Shoujo!
Mahou Shoujo translates to MagicalGirl, and that's typically what
you'll hear people call this genre.
Anime and manga that fit intothis genre will follow a girl who
has some sort of magical powers.
These girls will sometimes takeon an alter ego or secret identity
(11:51):
when using their powers, similar tosuperheroes like Batman and Superman.
Mahou Shoujo Includes a lot ofelements of Shoujo, hence the name,
while also including more actionthan a traditional Shoujo series.
Some Mahou Shoujo series includeSailor Moon, Little Witch
Academia, Tokyo Mew Mew, and Madoka
Magica.
Hunter (12:11):
Can't we get some love in here?
Well, thanks to the genreof romance, yes, yes we can.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre focus on the relationship
between two characters.
Usually these series focus on how twocharacters eventually fall in love
with each other, but some series havea relationship that already exists and
focuses on the trials and tribulationsthat the couple goes through.
Some romance series areToradora, Horimiya, Romantic
(12:33):
Killer, Love Chunibyo and OtherDelusions, and My Happy Marriage.
Similar to romance is romcom.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre deal with all the same things
that romance anime do, while alsoletting comedy play a big role.
Some series lean more on theromance side, some lean more on
the comedy side, and some strikea perfect balance between the two.
Some rom coms include Uzaki-chan Wantsto Hang Out, Tomo-chan is a Girl,
(12:55):
Kaguya-sama Love is War, and My LoveStory with Yamada-kun at level 999.
Isaac (12:59):
These next
two genres are ones we introducedin the previous chapter.
The first of these is yaoi.
Anime and manga that fit intothis genre focus on romantic
relationships between two men.
These relationships can be showndirectly or just hinted at.
Some Yaoi series include Banana Fish,Skate the Infinity, and Yuri on Ice.
The opposite of this is, of course, Yuri.
(13:20):
Anime and manga that fit intothis genre focus on romantic
relationships between two women.
Like Yaoi, these relationships can beeither shown directly or hinted at.
Some Yuri series include SoundEuphonium, Strawberry Panic, and Yuru
Yuri.
Hunter (13:35):
Now before we move on to
these next two genres, I just want
to let you know that these genres doinclude sexual themes, so if this is
something that you don't like, thenthese genres probably aren't for you.
And if you would like to skip this sectionentirely, please feel free to skip to
the timestamp provided in the show notes.
So the first of these two genres is a wordyou may already be familiar with, Harem..
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre will focus on one man having
(13:56):
a relationship with many women.
Harems are prevalent in isekai, but not all isekai have Harems,
and not all Harems are isekai.
Some series use a harem as a wayfor the viewer to insert themselves
into the protagonist's positionas a form of wish fulfillment.
Other harem series, however, usethe harem as a way to get viewers
arguing about who the protagonistis going to end up with in the end.
Some harem series include TheQuintessential Quintuplets,
(14:16):
How Not to Summon a Demon Lord, and Girlfriend, Girlfriend.
Echi, our next genre is one we'vetalked about in the previous chapter.
Anime and manga that fit into thisgenre are full of sexual undertones.
These series are full offanservice moments and lots
of implied sexual contact.
Echi will never show full nudity, butthey will get as close as they can.
Some ecchi series include High SchoolDxD, Rent A Girlfriend, Prison School,
(14:39):
Eromanga Sensei, and To Love Ru.
Now to wrap things up today.
We want to talk about somethingthat technically isn't a genre.
We're calling thissection, Do You Wanna Cry?
Because this
is a bunch of sad series.
Isaac (14:52):
Very good, but very sad
series.
Hunter (14:55):
Absolutely!
Series in this category commonlyinclude death, strong emotional
attachments to characters, andwill pull on your heartstrings.
Some series we can recommend inthis category include Angel Beats,
Your Lie in April, Clannad, VioletEvergarden, I Wanna Eat Your Pancreas,
Isaac (15:11):
Well, that concludes our
wonderful generalized genre guide.
Thank you all so much for tuning in toChapter 3 of the Newlyweebs Handbook.
This list, like our last one, isby no means comprehensive, but we
hope it will give you an idea ofwhat anime and manga you may enjoy.
Hunter (15:24):
Be
sure to tune in next timefor Chapter 4, Sub vs.
Dub.
Isaac (15:28):

Isaac
Well, well, well.
Looks like you're still here.
I knew a cool cat like you wouldstick around to the very end, and I
know exactly what you're looking for.
But you ain't getting it!
Our recording was so perfectthat we didn't have any outtakes.
(15:59):
Nah, just kidding.
Get ready for the OUTTAKES!
Isaac (16:03):
Now,
as before, these clips are largelyunedited and will contain quite a
bit of vulgar language, like a lotmore compared to the last time.
So if that's not your thing, probably should skip this section.
Also, fair warning, a lot of theseclips are going to be very loud because
we don't try to limit our volume whenwe're just recording random stuff.
(16:25):
Now, our first clip todayis a great example of lots
of vulgar language in these.
This is basically, we were trying todo a quick test run to make sure our
mics were, you know, set up correctly, and it ended up being, well, funny.
We kind of could not read ourscripts, so, yeah, it just
(16:48):
ended up being very hilarious.
Hunter (16:51):
Ha ha ha, ha ha!
Isaac (16:53):
Recording, and...
Hello everyone, and welcome tothe Newlyweebs Handbook, the show

Now, this next clip is basicallyfrom one of our random tangents.
Hunter just happened to be recordingat that time for some reason.
And you can tell we weren't ready torecord because the fan in my room was left
on, which, I mean, it's on right now, butthat's just because this is the outtakes.
(18:31):
It doesn't matter, but I wastrying to say something funny.
Couldn't think of something funny to say.
All I came up with was Nigel.
And that led to us talking aboutthe name of the Nile River.
So yeah, here it is.
I was trying to think ofsomething funny to say and all
that came to mind was Nigel.
(18:51):
I knew that
wasn't funny.
Hunter (18:52):
Nigel Red?
Nigel Blue?
Makes really good science videos.
Isaac (18:58):
Actually that's Nile.
Hunter (19:00):
His name's Nigel.
Isaac (19:01):
I know his name
is Nigel, but it's Nile.
Hunter (19:03):
I know
it is.
Isaac (19:06):
I prefer the white Nile.
Hunter (19:09):
I prefer the river.
Isaac (19:11):
That is the river.
Actually.
There's the white Nile and thenforget the name of the other one,
but there's another Nile also.
Hunter (19:19):
Okay.
That's off top.
Don't, don't you fucking look it up.
Stop it.
Stop!
Fuck you.
Isaac (19:29):
Yep, there we go.
If you stuck around this long, Iguess you got to learn something
if you didn't know that already.
The other Nile I was looking for iscalled the Blue Nile, by the way.
There is the White Nile and the Blue Nile.
And yes, I am actuallytaking a geography class.
Now, this, these next few clips arejust general fails and outtakes, so
