At the dawn of the 20th century, the dream of human flight seemed like pure fantasy. For centuries, inventors had strapped wings to their arms, jumped from towers, and sketched marvelous contraptions inspired by birds—only to fail spectacularly. But in 1903, on the sandy dunes of Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, two bicycle makers named Wilbur and Orville Wright changed history forever. With a machine they called the Flyer, they achieved the first controlled, sustained, powered flight.
